(AP) Will "The Sopranos" bury its Emmy competition Sunday? Will Ryan Seacrest shine as the ceremony's host or hit a sour note? Will controversy help or hurt contenders "Grey's Anatomy" and Alec Baldwin?

And most importantly, will anyone be watching the 59th annual Primetime Emmy Awards (8 p.m. EDT, Fox), given that it's airing against a big-time NFL matchup between the Chargers and Patriots on NBC?

Viewers who snub the awards pageant will miss out on high drama, cautioned Tom O'Neil, author of "The Emmys" and host of theenvelope.com, an entertainment awards Web site.

"You have the breakout hit comedy and drama shows, 'Ugly Betty' and 'Heroes,' competing for top series awards," O'Neil said. "And the stars of those shows are clashing with TV royalty: 'Ugly Betty's' America Ferrera is competing with Felicity Huffman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus."

"Those are exciting diva clashes," he said. Huffman is nominated for "Desperate Housewives," while Louis-Dreyfus is trying for consecutive trophies in the comedy actress category for "Old Christine."

Their other rivals are Tina Fey for "30 Rock" and Mary-Louise Parker for "Weeds."

As for Seacrest - who's proven himself a smooth host on "American Idol" if not a comedian - "sometimes just a ringmaster works," O'Neil said.

Seacrest could be dealing with a three-ring circus. The TV academy has dropped coy hints that Justin Timberlake might perform the song from "(Blank) in a Box," the racy "Saturday Night Live" fake music video about a gift-wrapped part of the male anatomy.

If Kathy Griffin is any inspiration, the winners' speeches could be interesting. Griffin's acceptance of a creative arts Emmy trophy last weekend for her reality show, "My Life on the D-List," was to be censored for the show's weekend airing on the E! channel.

But there's even the possibility of substance as well as flash Sunday.

Former Vice President Al Gore, whose global-warming documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" received an Oscar earlier this year, could be an Emmy winner. Current TV, his youth-oriented channel featuring viewer-created videos, is up for best interactive TV programming. (The juried award can have more than one winner or none.)

The Emmys could be meaningful as well for "30 Rock," the critically acclaimed but low-rated sitcom created by Fey. It's up for best comedy series and Baldwin has a shot at best comedy actor.

Winning a top trophy helped "Cheers," "Hill Street Blues" and "All in the Family," which once found themselves in the same tenuous position as Fey's small gem. After the shows were anointed by Emmy, audiences discovered them and they became long-running, influential hits.

Baldwin's chances may depend on how voters feel about him, not just his acting. In April, the divorced dad was caught yelling at his daughter on a leaked voicemail message. He also has declared that he "couldn't care less" if he dropped acting in favor of focusing on parents' rights.

Competing against Baldwin are Tony Shalhoub, "Monk"; Steve Carell, "The Office"; Charlie Sheen, "Two and a Half Men" and Ricky Gervais, "Extras."

Whether behind-the-scenes events count in the Emmy race also could be an issue for "Grey's Anatomy," which is up for best drama series and saw four cast members nominated in the supporting categories (stars Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey were snubbed).

The series was rocked by Isaiah Washington's use of an anti-gay slur involving cast mate T.R. Knight. The turmoil culminated with Washington's firing from the hit medical drama.

All the drama for "The Sopranos" was on-screen, which famously faded to black in the final scene of the final episode of the landmark HBO series. It's going out in a blaze of glory, vying for best drama series and with acting nominations for five of its stars.

History might be working against the modern mob saga: It's rare for a drama to be crowned best series after it's off the air. That quirk might open the way for a surprise winner, maybe "Grey's Anatomy" or the freshman sci-fi sensation "Heroes."

There could, however, be Emmy riches for the "Sopranos" cast, including stars James Gandolfini and Edie Falco and, with supporting nods, Michael Imperioli, Aida Turturro and Lorraine Bracco.

While departing dramas usually lose out, that doesn't hold true for their stars. Alan Alda, for instance, was honored last year for outgoing "The West Wing."

Gandolfini's toughest competitor could be Hugh Laurie of "House," a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild winner who's been waiting for his Emmy. Other nominees are James Spader, "Boston Legal"; Denis Leary, "Rescue Me," and last year's winner, Kiefer Sutherland, "24."

Falco is up against last year's best-actress winner, Mariska Hargitay of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," along with Sally Field, "Brothers & Sisters"; Kyra Sedgwick, "The Closer"; Patricia Arquette, "Medium," and Minnie Driver, "The Riches."

In the pattern of recent years, HBO claimed the most nominations, 86, and came out of last week's creative arts Emmy awards (for technical and other achievements) with a leading 15 honors. With "The Sopranos" and leading nominee "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" in the hunt, HBO looks like it will keep its winning streak alive.

Rehearsal Scoop! Teary Gandolfini and Tardy Kanye West

Categories: emmys 2007, planet gossip
James Gandolfini gets choked up and Kanye West finally shows up! That's the scoop from yesterday’s Emmy rehearsals at The Shrine Auditorium.

I’m told that Gandolfini showed his softer side during a run through of The Sopranos tribute. Not only will the stars of Broadway’s Franki Valli and The Four Seasons musical Jersey Boys sing before about two dozen or cast members of HBO’s mobster hit appear on stage, but clips from the series will run on giant monitors.

“The Sopranos rehearsal was so cool,” an onlooker tells me. “Gandolfini teared up when watching the footage behind them.”

While no one was crying about Kanye West, producers, I’m told, were not too pleased yesterday with the hip-hop star.

Why? Because he was supposed to be at the Shrine for a meeting with them at 6:15 pm, followed by a rehearsal at 7 p.m. of the comedy skit he is taking part in with The Office’s Rainn Wilson and Wayne Brady.

West was almost two hours late, according to an insider. “Wayne and Rainn were there and started rehearsing without him,” the insider says.

Emmy Nominees Prepare for TV's Big Night on Sunday

The bleachers are already set up outside Los Angeles's Shrine Auditorium for Sunday night's 59th annual Emmy Awards – but are the nominees and their presenters ready?

PEOPLE caught up with several of them as they prepare for TV's biggest night.

"I try and do a few things," Desperate Housewives star Felicity Huffman, a nominee as best actress in a comedy series, told PEOPLE inside the Kate Somerville White Room Emmy suite at the designer's West Hollywood boutique.

"I come here to Kate Somerville, I get dressed and take a shower, and that's pretty much the order of the things I do," says Huffman about how she prepares for Emmy night. "I have a great stylist, Linda Medvaine, and she pulls up to my house with a bunch of dresses. I look for something that I feel good in and is comfortable.

Joely Fisher, who is serving as a presenter with her Till Death costar Brad Garrett, says she won't be nervous about her Emmy night duty. "I'm only nervous about flying in airplanes," she tells PEOPLE. "I had my baby in my bed, I can leap off tall buildings. I'm not nervous. I'm nervous that people will maybe not like what I'm wearing, [but] who cares?"

Fisher, also at the Somerville suite, said, "I have my whole look planned out head to toe – bag, jewels, everything. It's almost like a person is standing in my bedroom, ready to be worn."

While she won't divulge what she'll wear, Fisher does say, "The last time I was at the Emmys, I wore Pamela Dennis. It was chocolate brown, had feathers and sequins. It was dramatic and lovely."

Debra Messing, asked if she's got her look ready for Sunday, tells PEOPLE, "I have, and I'm not going to share it!"

Masi Oka, who is up for an Emmy as supporting actor in a dramatic series (Heroes), told PEOPLE at Friday's official reception by the TV Academy for nominees at the Pacific Design Center that receiving the nod has "been a fun and very fast experience. I had to go to work every day, and I didn't really get to absorb it and enjoy all the festivities. It hasn't sunk in yet. I'll catch up this weekend."

Two And a Half Men costar Conchata Ferrell tells PEOPLE that when it comes to being nominated in the same supporting-comedy-series-actress category as castmate Holland Taylor, "We have made an agreement. If one of us wins, we're going to mud wrestle for [the award] on the set on Monday."

Law & Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay, commenting on what will happen if she wins as dramatic series actress again this year, tells PEOPLE, "Well, I have a one-in six-chance. I'll put [the Emmy] right next to the other one!"

Denis Leary, in the running for lead actor in a drama series (Rescue Me), half-jokingly told the Associated Press about the nominees' reception, "The reason everybody's here: You get a swag bag. That's why I'm here ... There's enough stuff in there – there's probably eight or nine things – that my wife gets something, and then we have something that we spread around with the relatives. So everybody's happy at the end."

Leary said he's rooting for Sopranos leading man James Gandolfini to win in their category. "They should give him an Emmy that's even bigger than him, a chocolate Emmy that he can eat," Leary said of the leading man who played New Jersey Mob boss Tony Soprano. "I just think he's the greatest character in the history of television."

Seacrest to Spears: Reconsider Emmys!
Saturday September 15, 2007

Emmy Awards Show host Ryan Seacrest is offering Britney Spears time on Sunday night's broadcast.

The American Idol emcee tells Usmagazine.com that Britney wasn't included in his show rundown as of Friday night. Still, he hopes that despite the label's rep comment Friday saying Spears was not planning to be on the Emmys, Britney will change her mind.

He even offers Britney a deal, telling Us: "I am willing to give up my monologue, song and interpretive dance for her apology."

A Seacrest interpretive dance for a Spears mea culpa? Sounds like a fair trade!

Ha ha! If we went to the Emmy's we'd go early, shove that food in a bag, then go watch the game. The filet mignon would be good on hamburger buns with A1 sauce. We'd even give some to our dogs!

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Twenty-two years after her immortal Oscar speech, the Fox network really did NOT like Sally Field.

Accepting her Emmy on Sunday night for lead actress in a drama series ("Brothers and Sisters"), Field stumbled halfway through, lost her train of thought, screeched at the audience to stop applauding so she could finish talking - and then was bleeped by Fox censors as she stammered through an anti-war rant.

"And, let's face it, if the mothers ruled the war, there would be no (expletive) wars in the first place," Field said, but Fox cut away for much of her comment.

Backstage, Field told reporters that she wanted to recognize mothers who wait for their sons to come home from war. She added, however, that she "didn't have a political agenda."

Told that she had been bleeped, Field responded: "Oh well. I've been there before. Well, good. I don't care. I have no comment other than, oh well. I said what I wanted to say. I wanted to pay homage to the mothers of the world, and let their work be seen and valued."

Pressed for more comment, she responded: "I think probably shouldn't have said the God in front of the ... I would have liked to have said more bleeped-out words."

Field, 60, had her first starring roles on television in the 1960s shows "Gidget" and "The Flying Nun." But she may be most remembered for her much-parodied 1985 speech accepting the best-actress Oscar for "Places in the Heart," which included the famous line: "I can't deny the fact that you like me. Right now, you really like me."

Before the show, about 300 people chanted Field's name as she walked the red carpet. She stopped and posed for pictures as the audience erupted in wild cheers.

Backstage Report: Sally Bleepin' Field

8:10 p.m
.: For a woman who made such a big antiwar statement in her acceptance speech, Brothers & Sisters winner Sally Field is so...small.

8:12 p.m.: "That's too bad," Field says sweetly, upon being informed that the "goddamned" part of her acceptance speech didn't make the Fox telecast.

8:15 p.m.: "Oh, well," Field says, upon being informed her bleeped-out remark is going to be one of the top Emmy stories of the night.

8:16 p.m.: Field's not done not getting upset about either being censored or stepping into a potential political minefield. "Good. I don't care. I have no comment other than, 'Oh, well.' That's my comment," she says, still as sweet as organically grown chocolate mousse. "I said what I wanted to say. I wanted to pay homage to the mothers of the world and let their work be seen and valued."

8:17 p.m.: But come on, Ms. Field, aren't you even a tad rankled by the network censor? "Oh, well. Too bad. That's a shame," the unshakable Field says. "I had no agenda...I wanted to pay homage to mothers, period—and especially mothers who wait for their children to come home from war."

8:18 p.m.: Field cracks! Just a teeny, tiny bit. "I think I probably shouldn't have said the 'god' in front of the 'damned.' " On the other hand, she adds, she's surprised she didn't say more words that sent the censors looking for the mute button.
