Rice University seeks help to find missing student

A Rice University junior missing since Saturday never showed up to class Wednesday to turn in his final projects for the fall semester, police said.
Rice Police Chief Bill Taylor said the school is asking the public for help to find 20-year-old Matthew J. Wilson because it was unlike him to disappear without telling anyone where he was going.
"He doesn't have a history of problems," Taylor said of the computer science major from Oklahoma. "He's a very conservative young man."
Wilson's roommate contacted Rice University police on Tuesday. The roommate, who had last seen Wilson on Saturday around noon, became worried when he did not return to the apartment three days later. Wilson had left his cell phone in the apartment they shared on Dryden, about a block from Rice.
Last week was the final class week for students. Rice students' final exams were taken or turned in this week.
Rice spokesman B.J. Almond said it's not unusual for students to leave their apartments for the library or other areas to work on final projects or exams.
"Students tend to hibernate before exams," Almond said.
Wilson had four take-home final exams that had to be turned in by Wednesday.
Police became more concerned after the studious Wilson missed his 5 p.m. deadline Wednesday to turn in the exams.
The university sent out an e-mail to all students about Wilson's case and one student wrote back, informing officials that Wilson failed to show at her home Saturday to give her a ride to one of Houston's two airports. She didn't think anything about it at the time, but contacted officials on Thursday to report it.
Wilson, a graduate of Haworth High School in Haworth, Oklahoma, was last seen by his roommate at their off-campus apartment on Dryden. Wilson left his cellphone in the apartment, but his backpack and 2004 four-door Dodge Neon with Oklahoma license plate 863 MCZ are both gone.
Police searched Wilson's Rice email account but found nothing to indicate he was leaving or had plans to meet someone. They are now trying to locate his last whereabouts through credit card or ATM activity.
Wilson is a 5-foot-7 white male, weighs 135 pounds, has red hair, a full beard and green eyes, and he wears glasses.
What strikes me as strange is why would the roommate not be concerned about Matthew when he didn't return after a day or two. Why wait four days to call the police? I wonder if Matthew made a habit of going off by himself and not telling his roommate where he was going or when he was going to be back.

Did he plan on vanishing?
http://www.click2houston.com/news/15060043/detail.html
HOUSTON -- A Rice University student who has been missing for a month made purchases that suggest his disappearance may have been planned, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.
Matthew Wilson, 20, was last seen at his off-campus apartment on Dec. 15.
Rice University police said Wilson bought a car cover, car window shade, charcoal and matches a few days before he went missing. He also withdrew $500 from an automatic teller machine, officials said.
Police said gasoline was purchased with his debit card shortly before midnight on Dec. 14. The card has not been used since.
Wilson's backpack was missing from his apartment, but his cellular phone was left behind, investigators said.
Detectives said the purchases suggest he may have wanted to protect his car, a silver Dodge Neon with Oklahoma license plate 863 MCZ, from the elements.
Wilson, a junior majoring in computer science, was not known to drink or party. He was reported missing after he did not turn in his final work for his courses.
Wilson is white, 5 feet 7 inches tall, 135 pounds and has red hair, a full beard, green eyes and wears glasses.
A reward of up to $25,000 has been offered for information about Wilson's disappearance. Rice University and Wilson's family have each offered $10,000 for information that leads to his return. Crime Stoppers has offered $5,000 for information that leads to felony charges if any crime was committed.
Wilson's family and friends have started a Web site that they hope will help find him.
Anyone with information about Wilson is asked to call Rice police at 713-348-6000.

There seem to be a number of missing persons cases where the person is not reported missing in a timely manner. Kids I know who are Matthew's age, both students and non-, would be reporting him missing much sooner.
The list of items he purchased rather alarming - did he purchase the car cover to protect his car? Or to hide it? The article said he didn't show up for his exams; some students become extremely stressed and even despondent during exam time. The $500 could purchase quite a bit of gas, but if he was just going on a retreat to relax, I would think he would have told someone. Hope he's just holed up somewhere decompressing.

A Rice University student missing since December was found and arrested on Wednesday in California, MyFOXHouston.com reported.
Matthew Wilson, 21, was detained by police on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley in connection with a theft involving a stolen laptop computer when investigators learned who he was, MyFOXHouston.com reported on Thursday.
A straight-A computer science major at Rice, Wilson last was seen in his off-campus apartment in Houston on Dec. 15. He later withdrew $500 from his bank account and his car disappeared.
In recent weeks, authorities said there were more and more sightings of Wilson in the Berkeley area, MyFOXHouston.com said. Police found his car on June 10.
Wilson's mother, Cathy, who recently traveled to Berkeley to search for her son, told MyFOXHouston.com she was worried about him and relieved he has been found.
Berkeley police did not have information on where Wilson was living or what he was doing during the eight months he was missing.
