Anyone have suggestions on improving this board? Here's three:

1. Move heated exchange to bottom of front page.

2. Move natalee holloway section to missing persons or cold cases. This might agressively encourage other discussion (and it's an accurate description of where the case stands).

3. Move boat drink room to top of front page. Don't merge it with other threads. Keep it as a special sticky section in the pub. It's a great thread and moving out of natalee holloway might encourage people to see it in a better context. Move birthday and other non-NH stickies to pub as well.

I'm trying to think of ways posters can be discouraged from cannibalizing each other. Bold changes might encourage positive discussion. A radical thought: temporarily deactivate someone who is posting more than half their posts in heated exchange (yardstick could be past week, past twenty posts or whatever).

More than once I've liked a poster when we talk somewhere other than in the heated exchange or natalee holloway section. New members would see there's more to discuss than personality differences from an old case. Of course, posters are most responsible for discussion. So, I'd encourage every poster to join in the fun threads here!

What are other thoughts or suggestions?

This is 100% true.

I remember MJTenn and I used to laugh about how we'd fight on other forums but would LOVE to yak it up on the "What's for Dinner" forum, sharing recipes, food likes and dislikes, etc.

I wish that forum would pick up. It used to be so much fun.

I think VC has stated on some occasions, and in fact very recently, that she would not do that. It would be interesting to find out how she feels now and if she might ever change her mind.

I think it would be a HUGE step and a HUGE leap of faith, when you think about it.....to see if RU could survive if the NH case discussion were just another part of the entire board, rather than its primary focus.

It would either be the end of RU or a great new beginning...where RU could and very well would mark its place in the world of very inclusive message boards, where so much more is discussed than just one case.

It's something to seriously think about and weigh all ramifications.

I think it just might could work. I know when I want to discuss other cases and many "general" topics I often go to other boards which are more active. Say for instance the missing hiker case in GA. Both CTV and one of the new offshoots of that board (HFTM) have more involved discussions. It's only natural, I think, to want to be on a board where there is a more lively discussion. Could it happen here at RU? The more I consider it, the more I think that would only come about if NH was put on the back burner.

Not speaking for VC here , but the problem of merging NH into cold cases or Missing persons is that the posts of the other cases / persons would just disappear into the mass of NH posts. One possibility is to move the forum down to the Archive section, wehich you and VC might want to discuss, but frankly folding NH into the other forum would be doing a diservice to the other missing people.

Just my 2 cents worth, not speaking as an admin here

We do have a solution to the jumbling if merged...we can add the sub forum modificaiton so that all old cases go there.

I do think NH is now an "old case" and yes there are still things like the suit re dr phil to be discussed but otherwise..

This is even more important now that NH has been moved down further on the front page. Was thinking about that tonight.

Think about it, VC.

I agree with you for starters.

Those needing to argue something out can take it back from where (forum) it started. Lately there's been over the top problems and arguments displayed at lengths that had beginnings elsewhere.

RU is a great forum other than what NH case has become, imo.

Great suggestions, Pax!

And the best suggestion is already in the name of your thread:
Keeping the board fun in 2008

During the past five years I have been at several message boards. IMO, RU offers a lot: lots of topics to discuss, different opinions are welcome, a place to socialize like the BRD, a place to vent and to go into "Heated Exchanges". In addition, large avatars are allowed as well as smilies and pictures. I appreciate it very much as it's not for granted on lots of other boards.

I can not think of more improvements or changes from the board's side. To make it FUN, depends a lot of the posters. The approach. The attitude. To just appreciate to be able to post here. And to give back by being someone who is fun being around. JMHO.

I would really like to see the Pub be utilized as a "chat" area when one is desired. Right now, occasional spontaneous discussions will spring up in HE, but it's not a positive environment for light-hearted interaction. Additionally, because HE's function isn't light-hearted in nature, some posters disagree with it being used for that purpose; which leads to more discord - in HE. Very Happy

Some people have no desire to "shoot the breeze" on a message board - they feel it is for more serious discussion; RU is large enough to accomodate both without anyone bothering anyone else.

Edited for spelling (big time.) Embarassed

HE is a vile, nasty place that seems to attract venomous posters. I think it reflects negatively on Refugees as a whole and contains harmful energy. I'm not telling anyone how to run the board, but I think it should be done away with and concentration focused on a more positive energy board. I know, no one forces anyone to read it, but it is like a traffic accident. You don't want to look, but you do anyway.

I log on and don't see the HE listed and the flames that went beside it.

That was where I first became aware of Fashionista's resignation so I posted good wishes to her there. I take it all threads pertaining to her resignation were removed tho. Question

well, whoops...then maybe I am "banned" from seeing/viewing the HE now, as under the Pub, I only see Live Chat and Holiday Traditions.

Then Crimes & Missing People start after that.

gosh, and I no fighty with anybody. It doesn't appear either way, when I'm logged in or not.

Thanks tho for telling me...

Rosie, I agree with you that the venomous posters love to post in HE, but if HE wasn't there, they would be disrupting every thread in every forum which appeared to be their motive last week.

Venomous posters bring their harmful energy with them and likewise reflect negatively on RU or any other message board. They just have to be weeded out when their negativity is evident. JMO

I absolutely agree, YIFFY. And I also admit that I get sucked into reading and can't resist commenting when I disagree with something significant. And so it continues. Sad That's why I'd like to see a HAPPY Exchange created so I could read/comment there instead. Very Happy
