Brianna Denison - missing in Nevada

Search on for Woman Missing Who Disappeared From Nevada Home
Monday, January 21, 2008

RENO, Nev. — A 19-year-old college student mysteriously vanished from a Reno, Nev., home early Sunday morning, and cops fear she may have been kidnapped.

Brianna Denison, a student at Santa Barbara City College, was staying with friends near the University of Nevada, Reno around 4 a.m. Sunday.

"We're treating this as an abduction case right now," Lt. Robert McDonald of the Reno Police Department told FOX News. "A small amount of blood on her pillow is of interest to us."

Cops are looking for a GMC Suburban and a white male, about 45-years-old, who might be of Latin descent.

"He's certainly a person of interest. We're treating him as a person of interest, not a suspect," McDonald said.

Denison is described as white, 5-feet tall, 98 pounds, with long dark brown hair and blue eyes.

Investigators say she may have been wearing light blue or pink sweat pants.

RENO, Nev. — A 19-year-old college student mysteriously vanished from a Reno, Nev., home early Sunday morning, and cops fear she may have been kidnapped.

Brianna Denison, a student at Santa Barbara City College who is from Reno, was staying with friends near the University of Nevada, Reno. She was last seen at about 4 a.m. Sunday, when she returned home from a party and went to sleep on the couch wearing sweat pants and a T-shirt.

"We're treating this as an abduction case right now," Lt. Robert McDonald of the Reno Police Department told FOX News. "A small amount of blood on her pillow is of interest to us."

Cops are looking for a tan-colored, later-model GMC or Chevy Suburban and a white male, about 45 years old, who might be of Latin descent.

"He's certainly a person of interest. We're treating him as a person of interest, not a suspect," McDonald said.

The man driving the vehicle had picked up a friend of Denison's earlier that evening from the party both were attending when the friend was trying to hail a cab and dropped her off without incident at Mackay Court, the residence where she lived and Denison was staying, McDonald told FOXNews.com.

"We don't know who he is," McDonald said. "We know he was outside the residence, but he could have come back. ... Maybe he saw something or knows something that might be of interest."

Denison, who is from Reno, is described as white, 5-feet tall, 98 pounds, with long dark brown hair and blue eyes.

Investigators say she may have been wearing light blue or pink sweat pants, a T-shirt and no socks or shoes when she disappeared. Her purse and cell phone were found in the house, but a brown stuffed bear that belonged to Denison is also missing, police said.

Reno Teen, Brianna Denison, Believed to Be Kidnapped

Reno teen, Brianna Denison, believed to be kidnapped: On January 20, the Reno Gazette-Journal posted an announcement by Reno police, asking for information on the whereabouts of 19-year-old Brianna Denison. Police are reporting the circumstances of her disappearance as being "suspicious" but have not clarified their meaning. They say that Brianna was last seen at 4 a.m. early Sunday morning at 1395 Mackay Court, which is close to the University of Nevada. Her description is of being white, 5'0", 98 lbs., long dark brown hair, and brown eyes.

She was probably wearing a white tank top with light blue or pink sweatpants. On January 21, police also posted an update, asking for information on the whereabouts of a man wanted for questioning. He is described as being a 45 year-old white man, driving a beige or light brown Chevrolet or GMC Suburban. While not considered a suspect, police believe he may have some vital information. Police also said that they have discovered the disappearance of a two-foot tall brown stuffed bear with white on its belly and multi-colored balloons, which is likely in Denison's possession.

News of yet another female college student disappearance can't help but bring to mind other recent kidnappings. The most famous one of late is that of Natalee Holloway. Almost three years ago, on May 30, 2005, Holloway disappeared while vacationing in Aruba with classmates on a senior trip. Suspects included some young men with whom she was hanging out. No trace of her has ever been found, and Aruba just ended its probe for any further information.

Another recent, and somewhat controversial, disappearance of a young woman was the kidnapping of Latasha Norman. She was abducted, and later murdered by her boyfriend Stanley Cole. She was missing for over a week before her boyfriend led authorities to her body. ABC News correspondent David Schoetz wrote that it was considered controversial because it didn't receive as much media attention as other famous kidnappings, such as Natalee Holloway or Stacy Peterson, probably because she was black, according to the Jackson, Mississippi Chief of Police.

So funny, the author makes us aware of the various media MOs for missing women. Then she diverts attention away from missing Brianna by bringing up the "missing white women syndrome" within the media.

Her friend woke up to check on her. What was wrong that the friend needed to check on her? Her friend said the 45 year old guy was harmless and the door was unlocked...This whole thing sounds hinky to me.

I didnt think much about the friend waking up to check on her. I remember at around the same age I stayed with my best friend and she woke up at night to eat or use the bathroom and she would wake me up bc she would walk in to check on me. But the door being unlocked? Someone needs to teach these girls about safety. I know I have been guilty of leaving the door unlocked when Im sleepy and forget, but at that age I was so scared of the dark I locked up at night. Young and naive girls is what it appears to me.

I guess Fox News has given Mark Fuhrman a job where he goes out and bugs the family and friends for interviews. He did it in the Drew Peterson case and now he is doing it here. I read on Fox that the police weren't too crazy about him going into the house.

Oh, I looked for a thread for this. Posted one in the Pub, oops. Sorry admins.

There's more information here: http://www.rgj.com/blogs/crime/

The police and the family are still asking for tips, even small ones. From the sounds of it, they have nothing to go on. The boyfriend and someone that gave the roommate a ride home that night have been cleared.

Denison abduction linked to previous case
STAFF REPORT

Modified: 1/27/2008
$2,000 reward offered in UNR rape caseUNR student kidnapped, assaulted
SPECIAL REPORT | Brianna Denison

Reno police have linked the abduction last week of Brianna Denison to a December kidnap and rape of a University of Nevada, Reno student.
Police announced Sunday that DNA analysis by the Washoe County crime lab established the link.

Denison, 19, and a Reno High graduate, hasn’t been seen since 4 a.m. Jan. 20, when she was sleeping on a couch near an unlocked door.
The victim in the Dec. 17 case also was the victim of an attempted burglary Jan. 19 at her residence in the 1400 block of N. Virginia St., about five blocks from where Denison was taken.

Police are trying to establish a link from the Nov. 13 sexual assault on the female UNR student to the attempted burglary at her home in the same neighborhood.

Police described the suspect and his vehicle: A white male, 28 to 40 years old, long face with a square chin, taller than 5 feet 6 inches but not much, very strong but not with a significantly muscular build. He had a belly that was described as not excessively large and firm but not flabby, an “innie” belly button, shaved pubic region, a light covering of hair on his arms.

The man had no jewelry or wristwatch, facial hair about a quarter to a half an inch long below his chin and was soft and not prickly as stubble normally is. It was unknown if he had a mustache. He had brown hair of undetermined style, normal speech with no accent or regional dialect, no smoker’s breath, no alcohol, no bad breath, no cologne or after-shave.

The vehicle was an extended cab pick-up truck or SUV, with dome light above the windshield and tall enough that it requires a step up to gain entry. The floor-mounted console was described as “fairly skinny” that opens in front. The radio had a blue and red LED read-out on the radio. The vehicle had cloth seats, automatic transmission. There was a baby shoe on the front seat floor board and 8 ˝” x 11” white pieces of paper with typing on the floor board of the front seat.

The suspect wore a red short-sleeve shirt described as being made of material similar to a jersey-type shirt with a medium blue neckline, short printed (possibly embroidered) word on the upper left breast area. He wore another shirt underneath with wrist-length sleeves and unknown color pants, not jeans. The pants reminded the victim of basketball pants as the material was smooth but they made no noise when he moved and they had an elastic waist band and no zipper.

People who know the suspect may not believe that he is capable of committing this type of crime and he may not necessary have a violent criminal history.

Nothing new, but searches are going on for her.

Community rallies in Denison search

No new leads developed Tuesday in the disappearance of Brianna Denison after 175 volunteers searched areas near Washoe Valley and U.S. 395.

The search efforts were coordinated by two national missing children's groups. More volunteers are needed today and until Denison, 19, is found, organizers said.

Snow and strong winds shortened the effort Tuesday afternoon after nine groups searched from 9 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. The last crews are dispatched at 2:30 p.m. to return before dark.

Volunteers were trained on what to look for and what to do if they find a clue. Officials with the KlaasKids Foundation of California and the Laura Recovery Center for Missing Children, based in Texas, trained them. The organizations typically stay in the area for about five days to search unless the person they're looking for is found.

"After this much time has passed, people forget that this is a real girl," said Dawn Davis, senior case manager for the Laura Recovery Center. "She is a 19-year-old, beautiful girl who was loved, was funny and is real. We are going to continue looking for her until she comes home. We never give up."

Brad Dennis, KlaasKids director of search operations, agreed.

"This isn't our search, it's the community's," he said. "This is all about Bri. Each individual added to this effort helps. Every little bit helps."

Davis said the community should not be discouraged that Denison remained missing after nine days because abducted children and young people eventually come home after extended periods. Elizabeth Smart, abducted in 2002 from her Utah home at age 14, was found nine months later after a tip from a citizen.

"Children have to know if you are kidnapped or lost, never give up hope no matter what happens," Davis said. "We will never give up looking for you."

The Brianna Search Center is in the Circus Circus convention center. Blue ribbons inscribed "Got Bri" were distributed so people could keep her spirit near their hearts. Photos of Denison were also showcased in the center.

"It's amazing to see how the community has come together to help out," said Danielle DeTomaso, a friend of Denison helping register volunteers. "It lifts our spirits that people have Bri on their minds. People who didn't even know her are here because they want to help."

Many people at the search center wore T-shirts bearing Denison's photo and "We Love You Brianna" that were distributed during vigils last week. DeTomaso said people should wear the shirts until Brianna comes home.

Reno retirees Dan Garfinkle and Tom Davies said they volunteered Tuesday because they felt obligated to help.

"We just think if it were our children missing, that we would hope people would help us look for them," Davies said. "It's a parent's nightmare. What is worse than having your child missing with no idea where they are. It's hard to express."

Garfinkle said the University of Nevada, Reno campus, a few blocks from where Denison disappeared, reminds him of the beginning of a young person's life.

"What this guy has done is caused memories that these kids won't forget," he said. "If we sat home today, we would not have made a difference."

Debra Williamson, 55, of Reno, volunteered to search for Denison because she has had trouble sleeping and worries about a niece about Denison's age.

"I think we will find her alive," she said. "I pray she's alive."

Denison was last seen about 4:30 a.m. Jan. 20 at a friend's home at 1395 MacKay Court. Police have linked her abductor through DNA to the man who kidnapped and raped a University of Nevada, Reno student on Dec. 16.

Authorities believe the suspect lives in Reno and is familiar with the area surrounding UNR.

Denison, a Reno High graduate, was in town for winter break from her college in Santa Barbara.

For Immediate Release

Case No.
08-2844

Update: Missing Person Case - Brianna Denison
- Additional Evidence Information Discovered -

During the continuing investigation of Brianna Denison’s
disappearance by the Reno Police Department and the FBI, additional
information has been discovered. The Washoe County Crime Lab has
established a DNA evidentiary link between Brianna’s case, the
Kidnap/Sexual Assault case from December (as already reported), and now
the November 2007 case in which the suspect attempted to sexually
assault the victim. As already noted, all of these cases occurred
within close proximity of each other in the neighborhood immediately
west of the University of Nevada Reno.

As a matter of a time-line review, the cases in question were as
follows:

● November 13, 2007, 5:55 p.m. - The female victim was battered
and sexually groped in the 400 Block of College Drive, Reno
● December 16, 2007, 2:00 a.m. - The female victim was battered,
kidnapped from the 1400 Block of North Virginia St. Reno, sexually
assaulted, and then brought home by the suspect.
● January 19, 2008, 5:00 a.m. - An unknown suspect
unsuccessfully attempted to break into the residence of the victim of
the December attack.
● January 20, 2008, 4:30 a.m. - Brianna Denison goes missing
from 1395 Mackay Court, Reno.

Anyone with information regarding the suspect should note that if
he is normally at a particular place, e.g., his home, during these dates
and times and was unaccounted for, that might be an important clue and
should be brought to our attention.

Evidence collected at the scene of the November attack included
unopened packages of condoms. The condom package photos are included
herein as another piece of information that might alert a person with
knowledge of a suspect who uses this brand to call the Reno Police
Department tip line @ 745-3521.

All descriptions of the suspect and vehicle have already been
distributed and as much information as possible is being sent in order
to solve the cases. The public is encouraged to consider that these
descriptions could vary slightly as compared to the actual suspect or
suspect vehicle. For that reason, please do not automatically rule out
non-exact matches because any clues, no matter how seemingly
insignificant, could help us solve these cases. The DNA evidence that
we are in possession of will provide us with the positive link(s) for
prosecution.

For reference, the descriptions are as follows:
● Suspect vehicle: Extended cab pick-up truck or SUV, dome light
above the windshield, tall enough that it requires a step up to gain
entry, floor-mounted console that was described as “fairly skinny”
that opens in front, blue and red LED read-out on the radio, cloth
seats, automatic transmission. There was a baby shoe on the front seat
floor board. There were 8 ˝” x 11” white pieces of paper with
typing on the floor board of the front seat.

● Suspect: White male, approximately 28 - 40 years, long face
with a square chin, taller than 5’6” but not excessively so, very
strong but not with a significantly muscular build, a belly that was
described as not excessively large and firm but not flabby, an
“innie” belly button, shaved pubic region, a light covering of
hair on his arms, no jewelry or a watch, facial hair about a quarter to
a half an inch long below his chin and was soft and not prickly as
stubble normally is, unknown if he had a mustache, brown head hair of
undetermined style, normal speech with no accent or regional dialect, no
smoker’s breath, no alcohol, no bad breath, no cologne or
after-shave.

● Suspect clothing at the time of the Kidnap/Sexual assault: red
(not maroon) short sleeve shirt described as being made of material
similar in feel to a Fubu jersey-type shirt (silk/rayon/polyester type)

with a medium blue-colored neckline, short printed (possibly
embroidered) word on the upper left breast area, another shirt
underneath with wrist-length sleeves, unknown color pants - regular
length - not jeans. The pants reminded the victim of basketball pants
as the material was smooth but they made no noise when he moved and they
had an elastic waist band and no zipper.

Also for reference, the description and photo of the condom
package(s) in question are as follows:

● Brand: Trojan, Expiration: 05/2012, Lot # TT7135WZ908
● These may have been put into circulation about October or
November of 2007.
● A jpeg version of the photo is attached

Reno Police Tie Suspect in Nevada Woman's Kidnapping to Two Earlier Attacks
Thursday, January 31, 2008

RENO, Nev. — Already linked to the sexual assault of a woman in Reno last month, police said Thursday they now have DNA evidence that also ties the suspected abduction of Brianna Denison to an attack in the same neighborhood in November.

Reno Police Commander Ron Holladay said in a statement:

"The Washoe County Crime Lab has established a DNA evidentiary link between Brianna's case, the kidnap-sexual assault case from December and now the November 2007 case in which the suspect attempted to sexually assault the victim."

Holladay said all three cases occurred within close proximity of each other in the neighborhood immediately west of the University of Nevada, Reno.

The 19-year-old Denison was last seen at a friend's home in the early morning hours of Jan. 20.

Police aren't releasing any details on the DNA matchups, but Holladay said the evidence collected at the scene of the November attack included unopened packages of condoms.

County: Help us in hunt for DNA

Washoe County authorities are appealing to the private sector for $150,000 to allow a backlog of roughly 3,000 DNA samples from convicted offenders to be processed and compared with the DNA of the unknown suspect who abducted Brianna Denison and, weeks earlier, assaulted at least two other college students.

Sheriff Mike Haley said at a Monday news conference that a new law that took effect in October requires DNA be taken and processed from all convicted felons and those convicted of gross misdemeanor sex crimes. But the state provided no money for the extra work, he said.

It's possible, he said, that one of those samples could lead investigators to whoever abducted Denison on Jan. 20 and also who killed a retired couple in the exclusive Montreux area in March 2006.

"This community has come together in so many ways, like they were looking for their own daughter," Haley said. "The Brianna case has emerged as everyone's daughter. We need to find a way to solve this case.

"Sometimes, when a government can't solve a problem, a community can."

Beyond the Denison and Montreux cases, though, there is a potential that a number of unsolved cases in the county ranging from murders to robberies and sexual assaults could be solved, Haley said, if the backlog was eliminated.

He said if $150,000 can be raised, the Las Vegas Metro Police Department Crime Lab and the Bode Technology Group in Virginia have promised a one-month turnaround to process the samples. Tax-deductible donations can be made to the crime lab or sheriff's office.

Crime lab supervisor Renee Romero said DNA casework generated from active investigations do not have a backlog, and evidence from cases such as the Denison abduction get top priority, with scientists working around the clock.

"This is not like (the TV show) 'CSI' where DNA is processed in 41 minutes," she said. "It takes days, and when you have volumes of evidence and you have to prioritize cases and go to court and meet with investigators, results just don't happen overnight."

By late Monday afternoon, business leaders, mostly from the gaming industry, had committed $93,000 and checks were still streaming into the sheriff's office. But $150,000 is still needed, Haley said.

The idea to appeal to the business community came from Reno police homicide detectives who were discussing the Denison case with crime lab officials. Calls were made to business leaders, discussions started at Rotary Club meetings and with local politicians.

Haley said underfunded crime labs are a common problem nationally.

District Attorney Richard Gammick said offenders are supposed to pay to have their DNA collected and entered into the database but frequently do not.

"We don't see that money," he said. "We need another funding source. DNA is a phenomenal tool we have. Those DNA samples that are just sitting there aren't doing us any good. They need to be processed."

Local police and Gammick's office has contributed money such as from forfeitures, but it's not enough, he said.

Assemblyman Bernie Anderson, D-Sparks and judiciary committee chairman who sponsored the offender DNA bill, and Assemblywoman Sheila Leslie, D-Reno, said it was so important to pass the bill last year that lawmakers and law enforcement knew they could find a way to pay for it. Anderson noted the governor had declared he would not support any programs that would require tax increases. The bill passed unanimously.

During the 2005 Legislature, Anderson said the bill failed because there was no funding source.

"There are a lot of priorities in the state that don't get funded properly, and this is one of them," Leslie said. "If the private sector can jump in and provide funding, we are all grateful.

"Sometimes, it takes a prominent case to jump-start the process, which is sad; but if we can use this tragic situation to clean up the backlog, then let's do it."

Denison family members at the press conference said they are hopeful that processing the backlog can lead to the suspect.

"It's just more waiting, but we are staying very hopeful and strong," said her cousin, Ashley Zunino. "Everyday we say to each other: 'Today she is coming home.' I hope the first person they test will be the guy."

Denison's uncle, John Zunino, said he is thankful for all the donors and said he learned how DNA works and how a backlog could exist.

"We still hope he finds it in his heart to just drop her off somewhere and let her come home," he said of the suspect. "This would have never entered my mind that Brianna would be abducted and taken without a trace."

Female Body Found in Reno; Police Won't Speculate on Whether It Is Missing College Student
Friday, February 15, 2008

RENO, Nev. — Police cordoned off a field where the body of a woman was found Friday but declined to speculate whether the body was that of missing 19-year-old college student Brianna Denison.

The body was found about noon in the brush-covered field on the city's south side near a light industrial area, Reno police spokesman Steve Frady said.

About 45 law enforcement and crime lab personnel, including an FBI agent, were at the scene, which covers about two acres, he said.

Frady said the time and cause of death would be determined by an autopsy. Authorities have "no ID, not even a tentative ID," he said.

"I'm not going to speculate because we don't know who the person is," Frady said.

"We're processing this as a crime scene. We do that with death investigations," he told The Associated Press. "They are gathering information and evidence and photographing the area."

"We don't know how long the body has been out there. It's definitely a female. We don't know the age," he said.

Denison was abducted Jan. 20 by a serial rapist linked by DNA to a string of attacks near the University of Nevada, Reno campus.

Denison, a student at Santa Barbara (Calif.) City College who was visiting her hometown over winter break, was last seen sleeping on a couch at a friend's off-campus rental house.

Police have said DNA evidence links Denison's kidnapping to two other attacks on women near the university late last year, and that an earlier on-campus attack also could be related.

Last Updated: 4:42 PM 02/15/08 - APolice have cordoned off about two acres as a crime scene in a field where the body of a woman was found this afternoon. But they are declining to speculate whether the body was that of missing 19-year-old college student Brianna Denison.

Heartbreaking.

I think it's gotta be her. No one mentioned any other missing girls in that area. Sad

I knew she had to be dead by now.

Actually they do find . . . a few bodies around here from time to time - not that uncommon.

I figure if they knew it WASN'T her they would say that. They aren't saying either way tho, so it probably is her Sad

What bothers me the most is that "hot prowls" or people just breaking into your home **while you are there** is relatively common in Reno. It has been going on for YEARS.

Is this kind of thing fairly common in other places?
