Actually they do find . . . a few bodies around here from time to time - not that uncommon.

I figure if they knew it WASN'T her they would say that. They aren't saying either way tho, so it probably is her Sad

What bothers me the most is that "hot prowls" or people just breaking into your home **while you are there** is relatively common in Reno. It has been going on for YEARS.

Is this kind of thing fairly common in other places?

Well yeh we get that too.....don't know what it's called there but here it is called "home invasion." Scary description, always. Sad

But wasn't the door unlucked at the house she was at? We NEVER leave doors unlocked. Shocked (Of course that doesn't necessarily stop criminals who want to get in.)

All very sad.

Police canvass area where body found

Reno police officers are canvassing businesses near where a woman's body was found this afternoon in a South Reno field.

Jason Rosvall, who works at nearby Precision Tae Kwon-Do, said police officers are looking for witnesses and surveillance tapes.
“He just asked us some questions, then we asked him if it had anything to do with Brianna,” Rosvall said. “He put his head down and said, ‘Yeah, we think it does.’”
He said Prototype Drive appears to be blocked off and the entire field near his business is taped off.
“There’s probably a dozen cop cars or more,” Rosvall said. “From what I heard, the body wasn’t far off the road.”
Reno police have said the unidentified body was found about 12:15 p.m .

Body ID pending until weekend autopsy
FRANK MULLEN

Posted: 2/15/2008

Reno Police said they will not be able to identify the body of a female found in a southeast Reno field Friday until after an autopsy has been performed. They said there would be no further updates on the case until Saturday at the earliest.

“We don’t know if this death is of natural causes, due to an accident or due to foul play,” Reno Police spokesman Steve Frady said at a 5 p.m. press conference near the Sandhill Road and Double R Boulevard field where the body was found.

Police have removed the body but are keeping the area cordoned off and will patrol it tonight to ensure no one enters the 3-acre field where the body was discovered. Officers have finished a foot-by-foot search of the land and are expected to continue that effort tomorrow morning.
Evidence dogs were brought to the field around 5:15 p.m.

Female Body Found in Reno; Police Won't Speculate on Whether It Is Missing College Student
Friday, February 15, 2008

RENO, Nev. — Police cordoned off a field where the body of a woman was found Friday but declined to speculate whether the body was that of missing 19-year-old college student Brianna Denison.

The body was found about noon in the brush-covered field on the city's south side near a light industrial area, Reno police spokesman Steve Frady said.

About 45 law enforcement and crime lab personnel, including an FBI agent, were at the scene, which covers about two acres, he said.

Frady said the time and cause of death would be determined by an autopsy. Authorities have "no ID, not even a tentative ID," he said.

"I'm not going to speculate because we don't know who the person is," Frady said.

"We're processing this as a crime scene. We do that with death investigations," he told The Associated Press. "They are gathering information and evidence and photographing the area."

"We don't know how long the body has been out there. It's definitely a female. We don't know the age," he said.

Denison was abducted Jan. 20 by a serial rapist linked by DNA to a string of attacks near the University of Nevada, Reno campus.

Denison, a student at Santa Barbara (Calif.) City College who was visiting her hometown over winter break, was last seen sleeping on a couch at a friend's off-campus rental house.

Police have said DNA evidence links Denison's kidnapping to two other attacks on women near the university late last year, and that an earlier on-campus attack also could be related.

The body found Friday in southeast Reno is that of kidnapped college student Brianna Denison, the Reno Police Department announced today.

The department held a press conference at the downtown Reno police station to announce the results.

Denison, 19, was abducted nearly a month ago from a friend’s house near the University of Nevada, Reno.

A worker from a nearby industrial complex spotted the body just after noon in a brush-covered field in southeast Reno. The field is directly across from one office and mixed-use industrial mall and behind another. The remains were found about 100 feet from the curb of Sandhill Road. The site is about eight miles south of the house where Denison was last seen.

Office workers in the area said the field had been covered in snow earlier in the week and that the snow melted over the past few days.

The Reno Police Department continues to investigate the crime scene today.

Evidence suggests that Denison was kidnapped from a home by a man linked to two, possibly three other assaults in the area.

Brianna you won't be forgotten!!!

I'm just sick. Don't know what to say.
I hope this guy is captured before he harms any one else.

From what I've read, he must have kept her for sometime before killing her & disposing of her.
I hope that isn't the case. It seems as tho' he is getting alittle more brazen with each of his victims.

This is going to be alot of hard police work to catch this guy.

The people who know this person have to have some sort of idea that his behavior is increasingly getting more erratic. (IF someone hasn't already)

It has turned into a "manhunt" says the paper. Here's a statement from her parents. This is all so sad Sad

Denison family releases a statement

RENO (AP) — Following is a statement the family of Brianna Denison released Saturday after police confirmed she had been strangled by a serial rapist:

“On March 29, 1988 Bridgette and Jeffrey Denison were given the incredible gift of their daughter Brianna. On January 20, 2008 she became the daughter of our entire community.

“On behalf of Brianna’s mother Bridgette, her brother Brighton, the entire Denison and Zunino family, we want to thank the Reno Police Department for all of their support, the community of Reno, the devoted volunteers, searchers, the media and everyone involved in the search for Bri.

“This is a difficult time. We ask first that every woman be diligent about their own safety and that each and every one of you protect the women and children in your community.

“We ask once again that if there is anyone out there with information, we beg you to come forward. Now is the time.

“And finally, we want to say that we are grateful for many things. Grateful for all of your actions, thoughts and prayers. Grateful for the gift of Brianna in all of our lives. Grateful for the joy that she brought us and for the cherished memories of her that are a source of comfort. Memories that give us strength to see beyond our sorrow, sustaining us in spite of our grief.

“Please don’t forget Brianna.”

Serial Rapist on Loose Spreads Fear Around Reno University Campus
Monday, February 18, 2008

RENO, Nev. — The hunt for a serial rapist spread fear around a college campus after police linked a 19-year-old woman's death to at least two other attacks in the area.

The woman's body was found in a field on Friday, nearly a month after she vanished from a home at the edge of the University of Nevada, Reno. Police said Brianna Denison had been abducted and strangled in what they called a sexually motivated crime.

Freshman Darryllyn Thomas, who lives in a dormitory two blocks away from the house, said the string of attacks has alarmed students.

"A lot of students think he's going to do it again," Thomas said Sunday at the student union building. "Everybody is pretty scared. Students are carrying Tasers, pepper spray and bear spray. I'm very paranoid."

University President Milton Glick issued a statement urging students to take precautions. The attacks have led to expanded campus patrols and escorts, seminars on personal safety and the distribution of whistles to female students.

"University police advise that you remain aware of your surroundings and avoid situations that put you at risk, such as walking alone at night or leaving doors and windows unlocked," Glick said.

Denison was a student at Santa Barbara City College in California. She was visiting her hometown over winter break and was last seen sleeping on a couch at a friend's rental house just off the Reno campus. Her body was found about 8 miles away.

DNA evidence links Denison's kidnapping to two other attacks on women near the university late last year, police said. An earlier campus attack also could be related. In that incident, the attacker brazenly raped a woman at gunpoint in a garage where campus police park their cruisers.

Reno Deputy Police Chief Jim Johns has described the suspect as a serial rapist and expressed fear that "he may re-offend."

Senior Alix Frank, who lives 2 1/2 blocks from the house where Denison vanished, said she's carrying pepper spray.

"I'm getting nervous because of the progression of the crimes," she said. "It hasn't destroyed my life with paranoia, but I'm definitely taking more precautions. I just hope they can make an arrest as soon as possible."

Denison family members said they would not relent until the suspect is brought to justice.

"We are not giving up," her aunt, Lauren Denison, told the Reno Gazette-Journal.

"This shouldn't have happened ... I know all of us, and the community, want to get our hands on him, but that's not realistic," she said.

A memorial featuring flowers, teddy bears and a photo of Denison drew periodic visitors Sunday to the brush-covered field where her body was found on the city's south side.

Blue ribbons hung in Denison's memory around the neighborhood where she was abducted, as well as outside the governor's mansion in Carson City. Her family has urged the community to place blue ribbons — her favorite color — around their homes until her burial. Funeral arrangements were pending.

"We will be honoring that request at the mansion and encourage all Nevadans to do the same," said Gov. Jim Gibbons, whose 20-year-old son, Jimmy, was a classmate of Denison at Reno High School.

Denison profiler:Man is budding serial killer

Story link: http://news.rgj.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080220/NEWS01/80220046/0/NEWS18&theme=DENISON

The man who abducted and strangled Brianna Denison and sexually attacked three other college students in Reno is a budding serial killer, according to a New Jersey behavioral profiler whose firm is preparing a report for Reno police.

“The concern I have is that a lot of serial killers were serial rapists before they killed,” said John Kelly, a psychotherapist and forensic social worker. “This guy is definitely a budding serial killer and I don’t think he’s going to stop.”

Kelly is a member of the private profiling company System to Apprehend Lethal Killers (STALK). His team of detectives and forensics experts are developing a profile of Denison’s killer.

Reno police, who met Wednesday with the FBI’s behavioral science unit to produce a profile of the serial sexual predator, would not comment on the Kelly profile but said the profiles would be shared with the public.

Experts said profiling is a process of taking educated guesses based on certain behaviors and are an investigative tool rather than an exact portrait of the suspect.

Kelly said the killer is a narcissistic, egomaniac with a God complex whose sexual stimulation and power have increased now that he has taken a life. He is likely shorter than average and enjoying the significant media attention and feels he has struck fear in the entire community.

“Not only did he have power sexually over someone, but now over life and death,” Kelly said. “Once he’s crossed that line, it’s hard to go back. Now he has upped the ante.

“He’s a big man. He’s famous and has put fear into the city.”

The suspect struck at least once a month since Oct. 22, which could mean his desire to rape has turned addictive. He likely has military or martial arts training and may be involved in athletics because of the clothing he wore, his strength and confidence in attacking these women. The man described as having a firm, beer belly is only known to have used a weapon in one attack, and overcame the rest.

Typically, sexual killers are addicted to the fantasies they have about asserting power and control over specific victims, Kelly said. Some target certain types of women who remind them of those who rejected them, or were somehow mean to them. Or, they could resemble their ex-girlfriends, or wives.

Because the victims in these cases were petite and had long hair, Kelly said it’s likely they were being watched before attacked.

Kelly said a stressful occurrence, such as the loss of the job or a divorce, can prompt such predators to go over the edge.

“The way they deal with stress is to stay in the fantasy all the time, like a wish,” Kelly said. “It’s very soothing for them and takes them out of reality.”

Kelly said such predators started off their criminal careers by peeking into windows.
The area were Denison’s body was found could tell investigators he is familiar with the area.

“This is where they are most vulnerable, when they have a dead body,” Kelly said. “They have to go somewhere they believe is totally safe and is familiar with. They also had to have the ability to make sure no one was coming in either direction.”

Larry Preston Williams, a former New Orleans police detective and now a forensic security consultant, said the killer likely will continue to commit more rapes without the desire to kill but may commit murder if he has lost control or feels there is no other alternative.

“Women need to understand that once he has gone to that level, he will be quicker to kill, but may not every time,” Williams said. “If he has the perception he has to take a life, he’s not going to think twice.”

Authorities say DNA has linked Denison’s killer to a sexually motivated attacks against college-age women on or near the University of Nevada, Reno campus on Oct. 22, Nov. 13 and Dec. 16.

He said someone short could feel like they are “a king sitting on their throne” and looking down on other people if driving a tall vehicle.

“Him going after shorter women tells me he wants to make sure he has complete control, so I don’t think he would be that tall,” Kelly said. “Or, he doesn’t feel like he could control a taller victim.”

Denison weighed less than 100 pounds.

Police said DNA indicates the suspect then tried to break into the December victim’s apartment on Jan. 19, the night before Denison was kidnapped.

“So it seems that Mr. Almighty himself is going to show back up and teach her a lesson,” Kelly said.

Kelly said the suspect likely went into a rage because she disobeyed his order not to report the rape to police. He said the suspect showing up at her house was “insane” because he knew people would be looking for him there.

“So he leaves that apartment, carrying this rage inside because he couldn’t take it out on her, and then goes by and sees Brianna sleeping on a couch,” he said.

Drops of Denison’s blood was found on her pillow in a friend’s home on MacKay Court. A teddy bear she was using remains missing.

Denison, 19, was a Reno High graduate and student at Santa Barbara City College who was in town for the weekend with a skiing group.

Williams said the suspect takes advantage of the naivety of college students.

“These students don’t think about all of the horrible things that can happen,” he said. “They are living in an area where things are positive and they drop their guard. They are normally not concerned with the dark side of life.”

Denison case: police seek evidence help

http://news.rgj.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080220/NEWS18/80220032/0/NEWS18&theme=DENISON

So far, the woman who owned a pair of Pink Panther thong underwear found Friday with the strangled body of Brianna Denison has not come forward to Reno police, one day after they made a public plea for her to contact them.

“We strongly believe that that whoever owned the underwear is going to have to recognize the panties,” said Lt. Robert McDonald, who heads the Reno police robbery/homicide unit. “Please come talk to us. Your information can greatly help us.”
Police say it’s possible the panties belonged to another victim, who may have not reported the attack, or perhaps she had dated the suspect and later noticed the underwear missing. Another possibility is that the underwear were stolen, maybe during a burglary, and the theft was not reported.
McDonald said there are no missing women reports police are following, or sets of burglaries were women’s underwear were stolen.
Washoe County Crime Laboratory DNA analysts were able to confirm that the two DNA sources on the underwear belong to an unknown woman, and that of the man who has been linked through DNA to Denison’s abduction and killing, and that of at least two other sexual attacks against women. A third attack, which was the October rape of a student by gunpoint in a University of Nevada, Reno parking garage, has not been forensically linked to the suspect, but police say they strongly believe it is connected.
The underwear did not belong to Denison, or the women previously attacked by the same suspect.
McDonald stressed that the woman who owned the underwear will be treated with sensitivity, and her information handled discreetly. They just need any pertinent information on helping them catch the man they call an “animal” and a “monster.”
Investigators say the attacks have the following in common: the women were mostly petite, young, with long hair, who were alone in the same area near the University of Nevada, Reno. The attacks were blocks apart.
“We are confident that we will find him,” McDonald said. “The public has to stay vigilant. It will only be a matter of time.”

As of yet, no one has come forward about the panties. It's been in the news for a couple days. There is speculation that there might be another missing girl or the perp left the panties to taunt police.

Man Jailed on Attempted Kidnapping in Reno: http://www.kolotv.com/

RENO, Nev. (AP) - Reno police say a man has been arrested on
suspicion of trying to kidnap a woman who was walking home alone
late a night.

Garrett Subia, 28, was jailed on attempted kidnapping and harassment charges following the Saturday night incident.

According to police, the 20-year-old victim said she was walking
home when Subia began following her in his vehicle.

Authorities say he then drove on the wrong side of the street, opened the driver's side door and ordered her inside.

But the woman says Subia drove away after a van pulled up behind
him.

The woman got his license plate number and called police.

Hi afmom,

"If this is the guy then we should know in a couple of weeks for sure. ( dna & all testing first )"

Is that how long dna testing takes?

.................................................

Dunno who this guy at this blog is but he says it doesn't sound like same guy from past attacks:

http://www.crimesceneblog.com/

In what looked like it might be a break in the case, a man was arrested in Reno when he tried to force a 20-year-old woman into his van.

Subia Garrett, a 28-year-old male was driving down the road, whistling at the girl as she walked home alone around midnight Saturday night. While she walked down Peppermint Drive, Garrett tried to get her to stop but when she told him she was not interested, he parked on the wrong side of the street, and opened the driver’s side door and ordered her into the car. It was then that a van pulled up behind Garrett and he fled. The driver of the van managed to write down his license number and he was arrested a short time later.

He has voluntarily submitted a DNA sample to be compared to that recovered in the Brianna Denison case, but authorities do not believe he is connected to the murder.

While I would love to believe that Garrett could be the serial rapist the police there are after, the circumstances of this case don’t appear to match the kidnappings of the other young women. I doubt if the man who took Brianna and the others made such a spectacle of themselves in public by screaming obscenities at them.

Whats so sad is someone knows who this guy is and hasnt turned him in. Maybe bc they cant believe its him or whatever. The childs shoe in the car tells me he is either a father, uncle or someones brother but someone out there has to realize the things in the descrpt match. I wonder if he left the area too? If he did he could leave and start the same thing in another college town and it might take police some time to connect the dots.

Brianna Denison’s mother will be appearing Friday on the “Dr. Phil” television show to speak out about her daughter’s murder.

Bridgette Denison will be featured on the show, one of her first television interviews since Denison, 19, was found strangled Feb. 15 in a southeast Reno field.
The show will air at 3 p.m. on KRNV channel 4.

Police continue its manhunt for Denison’s killer who has also been linked by DNA to the sexual attacks of at least two other college women in the area.

The case continues to attract national news attention. Later this month, a Dateline MSNBC program about the investigation that also includes an interview with Denison’s mother, will be aired.

Denison was abducted Jan. 20 as she slept on her friend’s couch in a home at MacKay Court. The Reno High School graduate was on winter break from her college in Santa Barbara when she was kidnapped.

There was a ?misunderstanding about the first pair of underwear they found with Brianna's body the DNA. The police released more information about it today.

More underwear found near Denison body

A second pair of women's underwear was found where Brianna Denison’s body was recovered Feb. 15, the Reno Police Department announced today.

Reno Police Detective Commander Leigha Struffert said laboratory analysis has confirmed the pink women's underwear contain the DNA of the murder suspect, Denison, 19, and the owner of the underwear who was a resident of the Mackay Court home from which Denison was abducted on Jan. 20.

Struffert said the pink underwear was found at the scene intertwined with a pair of distinctive black women's underwear described as having the caricatures of the head of the "Pink Panther" and pink hearts on a black cotton field. The black underwear contains the DNA of an unknown male and an unknown female.

She asked anyone who is missing a similar pair of under to call the 24-hour Denison tip line at 745-3521.

“The suspect in this case is known by someone; someone with whom they have had a long or short term relationship, or even a husband or other relative,” Struffert said. “We need to know under what circumstances the black underwear was lost and when.”

Struffert said confusion over the DNA found on the black underwear was the result of a miscommunication over the findings on both pair of underwear to officers working with the news media. She re-emphasized that the DNA found on the black underwear contain the DNA of an unknown male and unknown female and not the suspect, as was originally reported.

“However, we know that the suspect left both pair at the scene which makes the underwear important evidence in this investigation,” said.

Struffert said information about the pink underwear found at the scene was held back, but was released today to help clarify the findings on both pair of underwear.

“Hold back information is information about a crime that only the perpetrator, victim and the investigators know, but at this point in the investigation there is no reason not to release this information,” she said. However, Struffert emphasized that information about the condition of Denison's body at the time of discovery and other evidence recovered at the scene would not be released or discussed at this time.

On Tuesday, the Reno Police Department announced it had established a webpage to provide a single source of information and updates related to the investigation into the abduction and strangulation murder of Brianna Denison. Struffert said the webpage will be updated as new information about the investigation is released. The webpage can be found by going to the City of Reno's website at www.cityofreno.com and following the Brianna Denison Investigation link under the "In The News" heading.

The webpage currently includes suspect and suspect vehicle information, links to previous Reno Police Department news releases related to the investigation, and information released about evidence found near Denison's body after a telephone tip led Reno police to the location in an undeveloped field in south Reno on Feb. 15.

Photographs of the unidentified women's black thong underwear with the Pink Panther character designs are also included on the webpage.

The webpage also includes the numbers for the Reno Police Department's 24-hour tip line at 745-3521 and the Secret Witness Program at 322-4900.

DNA evidence from the scene of Denison's abduction has been linked to DNA evidence from an abduction and sexual assault that occurred nearby on Dec. 16 and a sexual assault on Nov. 13.
