Important notice to all users of mirror.co.uk forums
Sadly, due to persistent and serious abuses, we will no longer be hosting discussions regarding Madeleine McCann on this website. We do not take this action lightly, believing this website should be a place for free and frank discussion across the broadest possible range of subjects. But the level of debate on the Maddy forums has gone way beyond what we consider acceptable, with several recent incidents of extremely abusive postings, both against fellow users and the McCanns. We will not tolerate this kind of behaviour from a small handful of malign voices and have taken the unprecedented decision to block all further discussion on the McCanns. We remind all users of our guidelines for mirror.co.uk, which can be found here: http://www.mirror.co.uk/forums Any further abuse of the spirit of this decision will result in users being immediately banned from our website. Mirror.co.uk is a family website. We want to encourage debate, even argument, across our forums. We are confident this decision will be understood and welcomed by the vast majority of our right-minded users.

Front-page apologies for McCanns

Two national newspapers have printed front-page apologies to Madeleine McCann's parents for articles suggesting they were responsible for their daughter's death.

The Daily Express and the Daily Star also agreed to pay a "very substantial" sum to the couple's official Madeleine's Fund. It is understood that the Express Group will pay £550,000 to the fund.

Express Newspapers, which publishes both titles, will make a further public apology in the High Court.

Lawyers for Kate and Gerry McCann complained several weeks ago over more than 100 articles published in the group's four daily and Sunday papers.

The pieces appeared after Portuguese detectives last September named the couple as "arguidos", or official suspects, in their daughter's disappearance.

Their legal team argued that the tone of coverage in the Express Group papers implied they may have been involved, and that this was defamatory.

Both newspapers ran prominent pieces at the top of their front pages, headlined "Kate and Gerry McCann: Sorry".

The statement in the Daily Star was similarly worded.

It is understood that the Sunday Express and the Daily Star Sunday will also publish apologies this weekend.

The McCanns are understood to be "pleased" that an agreement has been reached.
