Parents of Madeleine McCann Investigated for Neglect

Thursday, May 29, 2008

The parents of Madeleine McCann are being investigated for possibly neglecting their daughter on the night she disappeared from their Portuguese vacation apartment, it has been revealed.

The first published court ruling on the Madeleine case confirms that the police inquiry covers homicide, abandonment, concealment of a corpse and abduction.

The reference to “abandonment” suggests that Portuguese detectives are investigating if there is evidence that Kate and Gerry McCann were negligent in leaving their daughter alone on the night she was reported missing. The charge carries a maximum 10-year jail sentence.

The McCanns, both doctors, have strenuously denied negligence and said they were just 50 yards away when their daughter was taken.

The court ruling also reveals that the public prosecutor wants access to the content of text, audio and video messages from 10 cell phones believed to belong to Kate and Gerry McCann and seven of their British friends.

Investigators are particularly interested in the content of 18 text messages allegedly sent from an unidentified number to Gerry McCann between May 2 and 4, 2007. They also want details of all calls made between members of the group between 8 p.m. on May 3 and noon the following day

Madeleine was reported missing at 10 p.m. on May 3 from her bedroom at the Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz. Her parents and their friends had been dining at a restaurant while Madeleine and her twin 18-month-old siblings were asleep.

Thanks gwen.

I hope the McCann's and their buddies cooperate.

Leaving three liitle kids alone while the parents get their groove on seems negligent to me.

It does to me too. I can't believe they actually had anything to do with her disappearance, but imo they neglected all 3 of their babies Sad

I agree with everyone, leaving three small kids alone seems negligent to me as well.

IIRC, the resort offered a place where the kids could have been dropped off. And if the parents did not want to do this, they could have hired a baby sitter for the few hours they wanted to go to dine and wine.

I'm not sure. I think they did not want to bring their small children to the place where they would be watched as they would go to dinner at 8 or 9 p.m., stayed a few hours and they could wake up when they would pick them up. The twins supposedly slept like rocks, did not wake up when police picked them up. But Maddy must have been difficult to get to bed. The mother gave Maddy supposedly some sleeping aid. And it was speculated that was the reason Maddy had died on an OD.

I don't know why they did not get a babysitter who could have stayed in the apartment with their small children.

thanks!......was it not said somewhere, that they did leave their children to be watched during the day?

the portugese authorities are almost adamant in placing the blame on the parents... Confused

Maddy didn't like being left alone. She apparently had been crying the night before (which neighbors heard) because there was no one there. The morning that she disappeared, Maddy allegedly gave Kate a grilling about where they were when she was crying the night before.

Kate and Jerry have vehemently denied giving any of their kids any sleeping aids.

It is beyond idiotic. People with large homes use baby monitors to listen for problems with children this age - when they're right in the house. Confused

I believe you're right, Olympic. I don't recall the specifics, but I think it was one of the big Question moments about why they left the children unattended at night.

Yes, they had the children at a place where they have been watched during the day. For a couple of hours, I believe. I don't know if daily or only occasionally.

It seems the Portugese police believes the parents have something to do with the disappearance of Maddy. I believe the parents are still suspects and that the Poartugese authorities asked for an extention of the suspect status.

I read that, too, that the woman who lives at the apartment above heard Maddy crying. I believe Maddy did not disappear in the morning but in the evening while her parents were at dinner.

The parents denied giving sleeping aids. But I believe, certain items were found in the apartment which pointed to it. Furthermore, the twins slept throughout the incident while police searched the apartment and they were picked up by the police and brought to a different location. It looked that the twins slept like rocks.

IMO its frustrating that so many different "news reports" came out which contradict the whole story. Hard to know what is true and what is not.
