Blog hesitation
Posted by Joe Dwinell at 8:42 am
The parents of both the victim and the accused in the double-murder case of Neil Entwistle are gripped with sadness as this case now rolls out the grim realities. A mother and child were brutally killed. A .22 caliber bullet pumped into each at close range.
Yesterday, this blog hesitated in showing the bed where Rachel Entwistle, 27, and her baby girl, Lillian Rose, 9 months old, were found slain. They were covered up in heaps of bedding only to be discovered when police officers detected the “odor” of death, as Laurel J. Sweet and I report today. The court seemed as if it were a funeral parlor as these truths were uttered. But this is a murder case. The details are upsetting and, within reason, it’s important to show the devastation wrought. So, below is the photo of the bed where Rachel and Lilly died huddled together.
The two were found in a four-poster, queen-sized bed in the middle of the master bedroom at 6 Cubs Path in Hopkinton. Both mother and child are forever together underneath. This image is posted and printed all over the world. This blog hesitated yesterday to be the first to show it. It’s what happens, occasionally, when you cover a case and pause to think of the victims. But, there’s a place for the cold, cruel facts.
More of those facts are up right away today. We’ll report them.

Juror late for big day
Posted by Joe Dwinell at 9:42 am
A juror in the Neil Entwistle murder case is late, lost, missing. This case has now hit the brakes on what could be one of the roughest days of the trial (now in it’s 5th day of testimony).
Images of murder victims Rachel, 27, and Lillian Rose, 9 months, are ready to be shown to the jury. The judge and lawyers in the case — and the accused — just reviewed those photos during a sidebar with the judge. Neil Entwistle’s mother is again in the corridor.
Rachel’s mother, Priscilla Matterazzo, is again gripping her husband’s hand in the first row of Courtroom 430. This juror being late is, sadly, just extending the pain by delaying the case. (There’s only one way to reach this Woburn court off a maddening, traffic-crawling Route 128 — leave early.)
Update:
* The judge has told the lawyers to report back to court at 10:45 a.m. (Woburn time.)
* The prosecutors and defense team — with Neil — met at a sidebar conference with the judge to go over the procedure for a late juror.
* Only 12 jurors are needed to survive this case. So, one of the 4 alternates could be put into action early.
* As for Neil Entwistle being allowed at all sidebar sessions with the judge, it’s allowed under law. He didn’t appear too happy as both sides went over the photos of his dead wife and baby. And, he didn’t smile or even look over as his dad and brother after that session, as he usually does. Grim, would sum up his face in a word.

6 Cubs Path DVD
Posted by Joe Dwinell at 11:36 am
A DVD of all photographic and video evidence at the murder scene at 6 Cubs Path in Hopkinton begins with violins playing softly …
But that’s all jurors could detect as a recess was called to fix video monitors in the court. The judge has again warned the jury panel — all 16 now seated — to put aside any emotions and brace to see facts.

Violins and violence
Posted by Joe Dwinell at 1:46 pm
From 11:40 a.m. to noon, the double-murder trial of Neil Entwistle was turned over to a tape of the slain bodies of his wife and child and the dream house in Hopkinton that never was. Here’s how it played out in court today …
11:40 a.m. — The tape rolls with not a sound in the court.
11:41 a.m. — The faint sound of violins playing can be heard lightly filling the courtroom. (We don’t know the song, but the station was 102.5 FM classical music.)
11:43 a.m. — Neil Entwistle closes his eyes. Smiles. Lowers his head.
11:46 a.m. — While his mother weeps breaking the silence of the courtroom, Neil Entwistle can’t look at the screen. He buries his head in his hands, red-faced.
11:48 a.m. — Neil Entwistle grits his teeth. He grimaces in a half-smile, half-despair. Clifford Entwistle hugs his sobbing wife. He, too, cries.
11:50 a.m. — Neil Entwistle smiles. Is it an image of the nursery?
11:51 a.m. — Neil Entwistle drops his head. Holds his face. Looks back at the screen and quickly looks away. He’s on the edge of losing control.
Noon — The tape is over. Neil Entwistle goes back to his seat and wipes away tears with a white Kleenex.
Neil Entwistle breaks down today as a video showing his slain wife and child is shown in court. He is next to
defense co-counsel Stephanie Page. (AP/pool)

I'm sorely disappointed not to have been able to watch much of this trial.
I did pick up some of the testimony today, in bits and pieces and I have
a question which I hope one of you is able to answer.
One of the witnesses today and I've forgotten exactly who it was, spoke
of a baby jar at the Materrazo home that contained bullets for the gun
used to kill Rachel and Lillian. That jar had latent fingerprints belonging
to Rachel's brother/step brother.
That's what I believe I heard. Can anyone either confirm or correct
this please?
