Elliott Weintein Blasts the Press June 12/08
Transcribed from videotape
June 12, 2008 Press Conference
Elliott Weinstein
Elliott Weinstein
We've come out before all of you media representatives, notwithstanding our desire and our intention to not comment on in court proceedings and that's because it has been reported to us that some of you are reporting that our client, Neil Entwistle, was laughing or smiling during the playing of a video showing his dead wife and his dead child.
We are offended by that kind of reporting. I want to tell you what we did. We are seriously and very, very concerned by how Neil would react upon seeing the images of Rachel and Lillian. We were so concerned about that that we divided our responsibility in the courtroom and my primary responsibility was to watch the video, to view the evidence as it was being played and Stephanie's primary responsibility was to watch Neil and make sure that he would be OK in seeing this horror that he did not commit. And anybody who interpreted his reactions as anything other than that of a man who is seriously grieving and disturbed by what he saw, by what he's been accused of doing and absolutely did not do.
Stephanie Page
You all have a responsibility, you've been there. I was sitting next to him, Elliott was sitting next to him, some of you were able to see him.
There is no way that Neil would be laughing, he's grieving, he's lost his wife, he's lost his baby. You've heard what a loving father he was, what a loving husband he is. You have a responsibility, you know he wasn't laughing. It's not worth a cheap headline or a cheap sound bite in one of your cable shows. It is so offensive!!

Well, I saw the tape.
At first it really looks like he's laughing.
Then crying I suppose.......
Why make a big freaking deal about this?
The jury saw what they saw.
Maybe they're (the lawyers) afraid the jury them self are misinterpreting what they saw.
It was reported on on CTV, BUT the jury is not watching CTV.....
So my question is: why be so upset?

This was not a press conference for the benefit of the Jury; in fact
the jury is not to be watching, reading or listening to any media reports
or talking about the case among themselves or with others.
Sure, it's probably near impossible for them to insulate themselves
against everything, but nevertheless, I believe Weinstein and Page
wanted to send a message to the cheap, ratings driven media who are
more than eager to spin anything and everything to get the most
reaction.

I agree with you, the jury is not to be watching.
But why would Weinstein and Page be concerned about the "cheap ratings driven media"?
"They" the media has nothing to do with this trial.
I have not seen headlines for say: "extra extra" or "entertainment tonight".
No interest there.
You really hear nothing about this trial in the media.
No interest.
That's why I am surprised these lawyers speak up, in the mids of a trial.
All kinds of commentary from CTV....................why harp on this one issue?
Strange if you ask me.
