Death Threats against Jeff's Lawyer
| tulsad wrote: | June 24, 2008
A Texas lawyer representing the teenage daughter of jailed polygamist leader Warren Jeffs claims she has received death threats.
Natalie Malonis told the Deseret Morning News the threats began last week when she asked a court to keep a leader in the Fundamentalist Church of the Latter-Day Saints away from her client.
She was to have an armed guard for a hearing Tuesday on whether her client must testify before a grand jury.
“I’ve been getting death threats and I am being provided a security detail,” she said. “That was not even at my request. Law enforcement recognized the need for it.”

They are trying to intimidate this attorney. Hope they bring charges against those folks.
If they are so innocent and act like they do no wrong. Then why would they send death threats?

Yes she is. But I wonder how they view it from a philosophical POV? I fully believe that their belief in how women should behave has nothing to do with a religious purpose - it's an easy way to keep them in line and in their places - but Natalie is making the men look bad (weak.) Must be infuriorating to the men. Lots of propaganda material for them, I would imagine.

FLDS update: Texas grand jury wraps up hearing for day
into criminal allegations against sect members
By Brooke Adams
The Salt Lake Tribune
Article Last Updated: 06/25/2008 05:01:31 PM MDT
ELDORADO, Texas
Teresa Jeffs, the last of seven FLDS witnesses summoned to testify before a Texas grand jury today, left the courthouse this afternoon after spending about 40 minutes in the building.
Alan Futrell, a criminal attorney representing (Teresa) Jeffs, the 16-year-old daughter of polygamous sect leader Warren S. Jeffs, said the jury would meet again July 22. It was unknown what other witnesses may have been called to testify today.
The FLDS women started arriving at the Schleicher County Courthouse shortly after 8 a.m. local time today as the grand jury convened to gather evidence of possible crimes committed by the polygamous sect members.
The women clustered in a corner of a parking lot as attorneys made their way into the courthouse and dozens of troopers strolled the surrounding grassy fields. The complex has been cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape to keep out media and others not involved in the proceedings.
With the women were their attorneys, including Criselda Paz of Legal Aid of Northwest Texas, Julie Balovich of Texas Riogrande Legal Aid and Brad Haralson, a San Angelo lawyer. Later, two attorneys representing women whose ages were earlier disputed with Texas authorities - Laura Shockley and Andrea Sloan - also arrived.
The 12 members of the jury heard from the FLDS members
today as part of a probe by the state into alleged sexual abuse involving young girls married to older men.
While grand jury proceedings are supposed to be secret, some details have spilled out in court documents and testimony involving Teresa Jeffs. She was accompanied by her mother, Annette Jeffs, and the two were seen speaking with an attorney before entering the building.
Natalie Malonis, attorney for Teresa Jeffs, was accompanied by a security officer as she arrived at the courthouse just after 9 a.m. She said she has received death threats since her dispute with Jeffs became public.
A district judge refused Tuesday to hear a motion to disqualify Malonis as the girl's lawyer based on the attorney's competing roles as witness and representative.
The state proceeding comes nearly three months after Texas Child Protective Services and law enforcement raided the Yearning for Zion Ranch to investigate a call for help. The initial call was later found to be a hoax.
[snip]
But the women's testimony is expected to be key - if they give it. FLDS spokesman Willie Jessop said the women called as witnesses are being asked to choose between their children and their husbands, their freedom and their faith.
Today's grand jury hearing ended without any indictments.

(The entire article is posted on the articles-only thread.)
The entire matter is just going to sit until the grand jury reconvenes on July 22? Considering all of the information they have to review, this could go on for months.
Why would Teresa Jeffs need a criminal attorney?

For some reason they want the girl back in the fold under their charge and NH off the case. It doesn't appear to be about religion. It appears to be about control with these folks
And when you can't gain control over someone. You send death threats. What's up with that

Willie has it right - they have to choose between their children and their abusers. The men should not put their women and children in that horrific position. They require them to marry and have children as teenagers, then threaten and intimidate them to lie or withhold testimony from prosecutors and risk jail or losing their children while they run away and hide. That's disgusting.

Tonk, I hope people can work on this case without receiving death threats. And that anyone who make threats is dealt with to the fullest extent of the law.

The question is why make death threats? If innocent why not let it play out in the courts. People who make death threats are usually scared of something

Or, sometimes, they're just loudmouthed bullies who don't want anyone else--including a court--telling them what to do or what not to do.

I believe that, been reading a few comments at some sites. One of them said the ranch was not a compound or fortress. It was more like a gated community

Another comment. The women of the ranch, compound, fortress, gated community were never allowed to come to the city. What's up with that?

FLDS girl's attorney refuses to testify before grand jury in Texas
By Ben Winslow
Deseret News
Published: June 26, 2008
The court-appointed lawyer for a 16-year-old member of the Fundamentalist LDS Church refused to testify before a grand jury investigating crimes within the polygamous sect.
"I asserted my attorney-client privilege," Natalie Malonis told the Deseret News on Thursday.
It led to a problem in Wednesday's proceedings. San Angelo Judge Barbara Walther had to be called for a brief hearing, Malonis said. The judge ultimately ruled that there was not sufficient grounds to compel her to testify.
Malonis has been involved in a legal spat with her child client, Teresa Jeffs. The daughter of FLDS leader Warren Jeffs is demanding a new lawyer, saying in e-mails made public that Malonis is not acting in her best interests.
"Right now, in my eyes, to me you feel like an enemy to me," Jeffs wrote to Malonis. "I hear that you are subpoened (sic) and what do you think I would think of that? I feel like I am trying to be my own attorney right now trying to win against you because you are doing so many things that are not in my best interest."
Malonis obtained a restraining order against FLDS member and spokesman Willie Jessop, accusing him of trying to coerce Jeffs into avoiding a grand jury subpoena and interfering in her relationship with her client. Malonis has said in court papers that Texas child welfare workers and law enforcement told her that her client was "spiritually united" to a man at 15. In interviews and e-mails, Jeffs has adamantly denied being a sex abuse victim.
When an Austin appellate court and the Texas Supreme Court ordered the hundreds of FLDS children taken in the April raid on the YFZ Ranch to be returned to their parents, Jeffs was exempted. Malonis said at the time it was because her client was an identified sex abuse victim. She was returned to her mother with special conditions, including no contact with her father and a man named Raymond Jessop, whose relationship to Jeffs has not been disclosed.
Malonis said it was her obligation to refuse to testify.
"The client has to be able to communicate with an attorney and know that those communications are kept confidential," she said.
She did worry that by making her e-mails public, Jeffs may be waving attorney-client privilege.
"That's what I'm afraid of," she said. "If that keeps happening, at some point the judge will compel me to testify."
The normally secretive grand jury proceedings have become very public because of the legal tug-of-war between Malonis and Jeffs. Malonis has been criticized for her actions and has even been escorted to and from court by police because of death threats she said she has received.
A number of FLDS women and girls were seen going into the Schleicher County Courthouse on Wednesday to give testimony before the grand jury. Law enforcement officers also testified. The grand jury is expected to meet again next month.

I could be wrong but I don't believe you can get a security detail by just saying you've been threatened. Do you believe you can?
I think you have to show a clear and present danger. Of course some folks have such a dislike of certain people they will go out of their way to diss them. Have you ever known anyone like that? The FLDS is a good example. Do you know of any others?

Hmmm...really don't know, but I would imagine in a high profile case such as this that it could be possible...
Can't say that I do...
