Suspected multiple murderer terrorizing central US

Police searching for suspected spree killer
By Carolyn Tuft and Christine Byers

Tuesday, Jul. 01 2008

A suspected spree killer could be in the St. Louis area,
and authorities are seeking the public's help to find him.

Police announced a $25,000 reward this morning for the arrest of Nicholas
Sheley, 28. A tips hotline is 866-219-8333.

Already, Sheley is charged with murder for allegedly killing a 93-year-old man
whose body was found Thursday in the trunk of Sheley's car in Sterling, Ill.

Police sources say they also are looking at him for other murders -- including
the slayings of an Arkansas couple whose bodies were discovered about 10:30
a.m. Monday behind a gas station in Festus in Jefferson County just south of
St. Louis.

About 4 p.m. Monday, police in Rock Falls, near Sterling, Ill., found the
bodies of four people -- two men, a woman and a child -- in an apartment
building.

Sheley was last seen Monday evening in Collinsville. On Tuesday morning, police
in tactical gear eventually searched a Collinsville apartment building for him
but "were unable to locate the guy," Collinsville police Sgt. Rich Wittenauer
said.
Wittenauer said the search was at the request of the St. Louis Area Major Case
Squad investigating the Festus case. Investigators are looking for a white
pickup truck spotted near the scene of the Festus murders.

On Monday, the bodies of two men, a woman and a child were discovered after a
well-being check in Rock Falls, Ill. Police wouldn't say who made the request
for the check, but they believe one of the victims is also connected to
93-year-old Russell Reed, a Sterling man whose body was found stuffed in a
trunk last week.

Also Monday, the body of an older man was found near a trash bin behind a
grocery store in Galesburg, a community about 60 miles southwest of Rock
Falls. Police Sgt. James Martinson said investigators were working to
determine if the body is that of a 65-year-old Galesburg man who was reported
missing Monday. The man's car was stolen and later found in Missouri, Martinson
said. An autopsy was planned for today.

Police say they see similarities in those murders and the murders of an
Arkansas couple whose bodies were found behind a trash bin in Festus on Monday.

Jill Estes and her husband Tom Estes of Sherwood, Ark., were in town to attend
a graduation. They were staying at the Comfort Inn Friday along Veteran's
Boulevard just west of Interstate 55. They were found behind a Phillip's 66 gas
station at 1245 American Legion Drive, more than a mile from the hotel.

Police in Sherwood Arkansas said Tuesday that Missouri police contacted them on
Monday to check on the residence of Tom and Jill Estes.

Members of the Major Case Squad are investigating. They hope surveillance
footage from cameras at the gas station and near the hotel render some clues.
Police also are looking for a white pickup that may have been connected.

"These were good people," said Festus Police Chief Tim Lewis Monday. "They had
no criminal history, and it looks like it was a random act."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Festus police at 636-937-3646.
As police patrol the bi-state region looking for him, several reports are
circling about where he was last seen. In one instance, officers were told that
Sheley was reported near Busch Stadium last night and may have threatened to
kill again. Another police report said he was last spotted walking in the
Cherokee area of south St. Louis on Monday. An alert put out by investigators
said he is wanted as a suspect in multiple homicides. He is said to be armed
with a 9mm handgun.

Sheley is described as a white man standing 5-feet11-inches tall and weighing
165 pounds, with blonde hair and green eyes. Anyone who has information on his
whereabouts is urged to contact Crimestoppers at 1-866-371-TIPS
(1-866-371-8477). He is considered armed and dangerous.

Sheley's uncle, Joe Sheley, 47, of Sterling, told The Associated Press that
Nicholas Sheley had recently struggled with drugs and that his rap sheet
include arrests for home invasion.

"He's been in trouble many times over the years, but something like this,
yeah, it's out of character," Joe Sheley told the AP. "He's got a temper like
anybody else. Just doesn't want to be messed with. Won't back down. But to go
looking for a fight, looking for trouble, no."

Sheley spent nearly three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections
for aggravated robbery between 2000 and 2003 and another 17 months on parole,
which ended in April 2005, IDOC spokesman Derek Schnapp told the AP.

The most recent warrant facing Nicholas Sheley was issued last week for a June
14 home invasion at a 90-year-old woman's home.

Sterling police said Sheley forced his way into the home, took an
undisclosed amount of money and forced the woman to write out some checks. He
became "somewhat physical" with the woman but she was not seriously injured,
police said.

Police: Ex-convict suspected of killing 8 captured

By JIM SUHR – 1 hour ago

GRANITE CITY, Ill. (AP) — Police and FBI agents captured an ex-convict suspected of killing eight people in two states as he smoked a cigarette outside of a southwestern Illinois bar Tuesday night, a bar employee said.

Nicholas T. Sheley, who was the subject of a multistate manhunt after authorities linked him to the deaths of eight people in Illinois and Missouri, was arrested around 7 p.m. outside of Bindy's, a Granite City bar, said bartender Katie Ronk.

Sheley ordered a glass of water and went to the bathroom before another bartender and customer recognized him, Ronk said. They notified police, who arrived minutes later with FBI agents and took Sheley into custody while he smoked a cigarette outside the bar.

FBI spokeswoman Kelly Brennan confirmed Sheley, 28, was caught in Granite City, about 10 miles north of St. Louis. She didn't elaborate on the arrest.

Tim Lewis, the police chief in the St. Louis suburb of Festus, Mo., said publicity from news reports paid off after 6 p.m. when a number of Granite City residents reported seeing Sheley.

"He was desperate and he gave up without a fight," Lewis said.

"He looks rough. He's had a rough two days," he said.

A spokeswoman with the Granite City police department said Sheley was in custody there.

The FBI on Tuesday launched a manhunt for Sheley, who they warned should be considered armed and dangerous. Among those authorities believe Sheley killed were a 93-year-old man, a child and a couple whose blood-soaked dogs were found roaming a motel parking lot.

Sheley has only been charged in the death of one of the eight. He faces charges of first-degree murder, aggravated battery and vehicular hijacking in the death of Ronald Randall, whose body was found Monday behind a grocery store in Galesburg, in northwestern Illinois, police said. An autopsy showed the 65-year-old died from blunt force trauma to the head, likely on Saturday.

Investigators said the other victims all appeared to have died in the same manner and that evidence linked to Sheley was recovered at each scene. The FBI and Illinois State Police declined to elaborate.

Authorities said the killings began with the beating death of 93-year-old Russell Reed, a Sterling man whose body was found stuffed in the trunk of a car Thursday. Sheley also is from Sterling, a town of 15,000 about 100 miles west of Chicago.

On Monday, police discovered the bodies of two men, a woman and a child in an apartment on a street of single-family homes in nearby Rock Falls. Investigators believe they likely died late Saturday or early Sunday.

Sheley was acquainted with the male victims, Brock Branson and Kenneth Ulvey, both in their 20s, said Illinois State Police Region Two Commander Mark Maton. Police did not identify the woman or child.

Sheley spent nearly three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for aggravated robbery between 2000 and 2003 and another 17 months on parole, which ended in April 2005, said IDOC spokesman Derek Schnapp.

Federal prosecutors in northern Illinois charged Sheley on Tuesday with fleeing the state to avoid prosecution for a June 14 felony home invasion in Sterling.

At one point Sheley was in Iowa, and stopped to call his wife Saturday from a rest area between Davenport and Bettendorf, Iowa, an FBI agent said in an affidavit.

William Monroe, an assistant special agent in charge of the FBI's Chicago field office, said he believes Sheley also traveled last week to buy drugs in Chicago, where authorities recovered two handguns taken from Reed — the first man killed.

Associated Press writers Daniel Yovich in Sterling, Sophia Tareen, Ashley M. Heher and Don Babwin in Chicago contributed to this report.

NEW: Murder suspect reportedly arrested on Nameoki Road

Authorities from the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis and the Granite City Police Department swarmed an area near the Granite City K-Mart at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, looking for a murder suspect.

Authorities arrested the suspect, Nicholas T. Sheley, 28, of St. Louis, at about 7 p.m. near Bindy’s restaurant at 3705 Nameoki Road.

”We got the guy without incident,” said an authority from the Granite City Police Department.

Sheley was taken to the Granite City police station.

As of 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sheley remained in custody at the station.

Sheley is a suspect in eight murders in Missouri and Northern Illinois that allegedly took place over the last five days, according to reports. One of the murders was that of 93-year-old Russell Reed, of Sterling, Ill., according to reports.

Two of the other murders allegedly took place in Festus, Mo. Sheley is also the suspect in four murders in Rock Falls, Ill., a killing in Whiteside County, Ill., and murders in Galesburg, Ill., according to reports.

Before Sheley made his way to Granite City on Tuesday evening, he was thought to be hiding in Collinsville Tuesday morning, based on a tip from the Major Case Squad.

The idea of Sheley in Collinsville caused a stir in a local neighborhood that led to an early morning raid by authorities. Collinsville Police Chief Scott Williams admits the raid on a Vandalia Street apartment complex might have seemed over the top — the guns, the closed street and the SWAT team.

Sheley appears before judge; can't make bail

By Terry Hillig
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
Wednesday, Jul. 02 2008

EDWARDSVILLE -- Nicholas T. Sheley today made a brief appearance before a judge
here to answer charges stemming from one of the eight murders authorities
believe he committed in two states in recent days.

Sheley, dressed in green-and-white striped prison garb, spoke little, shedding
no new light on what caused his alleged murderous rampage.

He only told the judge he could not post the $1 million bail set for the five
criminal charges stemming from the killing of Ronald Randall, 65, of Galesburg
in Knox County.

Knox County authorities were on their way to pick up Sheley, said a Madison
County sheriff's official.

Sheley's court appearance was conducted over closed-circuit television. He was
being held at the Madison County Jail.

Sheley used an ax in at least some of the murders, police sources told the
Post-Dispatch today.

The 28-year-old ex-convict was arrested in Granite City on Tuesday, ending an
intense, at times frantic manhunt that gripped the St. Louis region.

His alleged victims -- which included a 93-year-old man, a toddler and a couple
in Festus -- appeared to have been killed by blunt force trauma to the head,
according to the FBI.

Authorities also believe Sheley had several guns, although they were still
searching for those weapons today, said Illinois State Police sources.

Sheley is from Sterling, Ill., about 100 miles west of Chicago. He has been
charged in two of the eight deaths. More charges were expected.

In addition to the charges from Randall's death, who body was found behind a
grocery store, Sheley faces charges in the death of 93-year-old Russell Reed in
Sterling, who body was found in the truck of Reed's vehicle.

Police believe Sheley also killed four people in Rock Falls, Ill.: Brock
Branson, 25, and Kenneth Ulve, 29, both of Rock Falls; and Kilynna Blake, 20,
and Dayan Blake, 2, both of Cedar City, Utah.

He then allegedly killed Thomas and Jill Estes of Sherwood, Ark., who were
staying at a motel in Festus.

Carolyn Tuft and Todd C. Frankel of the Post-Dispatch contributed to this
report.

Call From Suspected Ill. Killer Set Up His Arrest

Bond Held At $1 Million For Suspect In Two-State Killing Rampage

GALESBURG, Ill. (AP) -- A judge in Illinois has upheld a 1 million-dollar bond for a man suspected of killing eight people in a two-state spree.

Nicholas Sheley (SHEE'-lee) appeared in circuit court today in Galesburg, Illinois, where he's charged in the beating death of 65-year-old Ronald Randall.

Meanwhile prosecutors in Jefferson County, Missouri, say they'll probably decide next week whether to charge Sheley in the killings of an Arkansas couple. The bodies of Tom and Jill Estes were found Monday by a gas station in Festus.

Festus Police Chief Tim Lewis says it appears the couple were attacked as soon as they climbed out of their Corvette after leaving a graduation party.

Police say Sheley didn't take the car but put their bodies in a Chevy Silverado traced to Randall.

CHICAGO (AP) -- As the manhunt for the ex-con suspected of bludgeoning eight people to death during a two-state killing spree wound down, a disheveled Nicholas T. Sheley walked calmly into a Subway sandwich shop, asked to use the phone and called his lawyer -- all but ensuring his capture.

He bummed a light and had a cigarette with a restaurant employee, inquiring about clubs in Granite City, an Illinois town near St. Louis. The employee pointed him to Bindy's bar, where authorities converged and arrested Sheley minutes later.

The Tuesday night phone call from Subway was the last of multiple conversations Sheley had with the attorney, who was under the direction of the FBI, a person close to the investigation told The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

Sheley had called a family member earlier that day and said he wanted to talk to his lawyer, the person said Thursday.

Sheley, 28, is suspected of killing eight people in Illinois and Missouri in the past week, including a 93-year-old man stuffed in a car trunk, a 2-year-old child found in an apartment with three others and an Arkansas couple attending a graduation celebration in Missouri. He is charged in only two of the eight killings, but authorities say evidence links him to each crime scene.

On Thursday, Sheley was transferred from Madison County east of St. Louis to Knox County in western Illinois, where he made his first court appearance there in the slaying of 65-used in the killings.

In Whiteside County, where Sheley is charged with killing 93-year-old Russell Reed, Sheriff Roger Schipper said a weather vane with blood on it and an "out of place" barstool in a pool of blood were found in Reed's home, but it's unclear if they were used as weapons.

Schipper said his office is also looking into reports that Sheley may have come to Reed's home earlier this year looking for scrap metal. Sheley lived nearby.

Sheley also is a suspect but has not been charged in the slayings of four people in the county, including a 2-year-old child, whose bodies were discovered Monday in an apartment in Rock Falls.

In Jefferson County, Mo. -- south of St. Louis -- prosecutors said they probably would decide next week whether to charge Sheley in the killings of the Arkansas couple, whose bodies were also found Monday.

Festus Police Chief Tim Lewis told The Associated Press Thursday that it appears Tom and Jill Estes were attacked as soon as they climbed out of their Corvette after leaving a graduation party.

But police say Sheley didn't take their car, instead loading the bodies into a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado, traced to Randall, whose body was found about 250 miles away.

"You had droplets of blood we literally followed for a mile and a half on foot," he said.

Like Schipper, Lewis said it was unclear what was used to kill the couple.
