The 'Matrix' sequels lost another cast member when Gloria Foster Gloria Foster, who played the Oracle, succumbed to diabetes in September 2001. She had finished her scenes for 'The Matrix Reloaded,' but was replaced for 'The Matrix Revolutions' by Mary Alice, with a vague explanation given for the character's change in appearance.

Massimo Troisi (right) was posthumously nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his performance in 'The Postman (Il Postino),' which debuted at the Venice Film Festival months after his June 1994 death. As critics and moviegoers rave about Heath Ledger's final on-screen performance in 'The Dark Knight,' one wonders if a similar honor may yet be in store.

In Edward G. Robinson's final film, Soylent Green, he plays a depressed and disillusioned man who commits suicide to escape from the apocalyptic future world in which he lives; his death scene features him speaking with co-star Charlton Heston (left )whose character weeps silently as he sees Robinson's photos of a pre-destroyed Earth. The tears were real; Charlton was at that time the only one who knew of Robinson's terminal cancer. Indeed, Robinson died less than a month later, just nine days after the end of filming.

Karen Anne Carpenter was a highly successful American singer and drummer. She and her brother, Richard, formed the popular 1970s duo Carpenters.
Carpenter was an accomplished drummer, placing first in Playboy's reader poll for Best Rock Drummer of 1975, thus pioneering the way for a plethora of female drummers to follow. However, it is her vocal style for which she is best remembered. Known for impeccable phrasing and perfect pitch, Carpenter suffered from anorexia nervosa, a little known disease at the time, and eventually died from complications related to recovering from the illness at the age of 32, in 1983.

The most popular female country singer in recording history, Patsy Cline has achieved icon status since her tragic early death at age thirty in 1963. Cline is invariably invoked as a standard for female vocalists, and she has inspired scores of singers including k. d. lang, Loretta Lynn, Linda Ronstadt, Trisha Yearwood, and Wynonna Judd. Her brief career produced the #1 jukebox hit of all time, “Crazy” (written by Willie Nelson) and her unique, crying style and vocal impeccability have established her reputation as the quintessential torch singer.

Soul Men Director Remembers Mac and Hayes
When one of his final flicks, Soul Men, is released, Bernie Mac will not only be remembered for his comedic acting chops, but also his great singing voice.
Yes, his singing voice.
"He definitely can carry a tune," the movie's director Malcolm D. Lee told me this morning. "He does a great falsetto in the movie, and a baritone and alto as well. He has a range. He plays a range of emotions in the film as well as octaves."
In the November flick, Mac and Samuel L. Jackson star as soul singers who agree to reunite and perform at a tribute for their recently deceased band leader after being estranged for a couple of decades.
"They do their own singing and their own dancing in the film," says Lee. "You get the opportunity to see both of these guys go for it in a real way that's fun and energetic."
Mac and Jackson will be included on the movie's soundtrack. "We prerecorded five songs with Sam and Bernie," Lee says. "One of them is original, and the rest of them are covers." (Lee declined to reveal which covers, because he'd like to keep it a surprise.)
Lee last spoke to Mac on the final day of shooting in April. "When I went to shake his hand and tell him how much I loved him and what a great job he did, he hugged me back and looked me in the eye and said, 'Make a great film, man,' " Lee remembered. "I promised him that I would."
Lee also has special memories of Isaac Hayes The music legend plays himself in Soul Men "He was written into the script as himself," Lee said. "When I came on, they asked, 'Do you want him in the movie?' and I was like, 'Of course.' Not to include him in the movie would have been sacrilege. I had to have Isaac in the film."
