Estelle Getty Dies at 84

Stage and TV Star Estelle Getty Dies at 84
by Broadway.com Staff

Estelle Getty, best known for her seven seasons as Sophia Petrillo in The Golden Girls, died on July 22 at her home in Los Angeles, three days before her 85th birthday. She had been battling Lewy Body Dementia for more than 10 years as well as Alzheimer's disease, according to her official website.

Born Estelle Scher in New York on July 25, 1923, Getty began her career in Yiddish theater. Her most important stage role was as Mrs. Beckoff, Harvey Fierstein's mother, in both the off-Broadway and Broadway productions of Torch Song Trilogy, a role that brought her a Drama Desk Award nomination. Her website quotes a passage from her autobiography, If I Knew Then What I Know Now...So What? (Contemporary Books, 1988): "I've played mothers to heroes and mothers to zeroes. I've played Irish mothers, Jewish mothers, Italian mothers, Southern mothers, mothers in plays by Neil Simon and Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams. I've played mother to everyone but Attila the Hun."

A partial list of stage credits includes The Divorce of Judy and Jane, Bijou Theatre, 1971; Widows and Children First, La MaMa, 1979; and regional productions of All My Sons, Arsenic and Old Lace, Blithe Spirit, A Box of Tears, Death of a Salesman, The Demolition of Hannah Fay, Fits and Starts, The Glass Menagerie, Hidden Corners, I Don't Know Why I'm Screaming, Light up the Sky, Lovers and Other Strangers, Never Too Old, Pocketful of Stars, 6 Rms Rv Vu, Table Settings, Under the Bridge There's a Lonely Place with Gregory Peck and Me and Waiting for Lefty.

Getty created the role of feisty, plain-spoken Sophia in The Golden Girls in 1985 and frequently stole the show from co-stars Bea Arthur (who played her daughter, Dorothy), Betty White and Rue McClanahan. She received six Emmy Award nominations and won the prize in 1988. Her film roles included playing mother to Cher (Mask, 1985), Barry Manilow (Copacabana, 1985), and Sylvester Stallone (Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot).

Under five feet tall, Getty was said to identify with life's underdogs, having experienced discrimination against her height and age. "Being tiny has been difficult for me in a business that regarded physicality as the most important part of your life," Getty was quoted as saying on her website. "And I always had to fight against the fact that I could do things even though I was small. And eventually I proved to them I could play mother to six footers."

She was married to Arthur Gettleman (from whose name she adapted her stage name) from 1946 until his death in 2004 and was the mother of sons Carl and Barry.

Lifetime planning tribute to Estelle Getty

NEW YORK, July 23 (UPI) -- Lifetime Television says it plans to pay tribute to late U.S. actress Estelle Getty by showing a marathon of episodes from her TV series, "The Golden Girls."

Getty died Tuesday at her home in Los Angeles at the age of 84.

Lifetime said it will air on Friday afternoon 10 "Golden Girls" episodes showcasing Getty's character of Sophia "in all her blustering, sarcastic splendor," beginning with the show's pilot.

The last episode to air at 4:30 p.m. (ET/PT) will be the No. 1 favorite "Sophia episode," as decided by her fans who can vote at myLifetime.com.

"The Golden Girls" premiered in reruns on Lifetime in 1997 and airs weekdays from 9-10 a.m., 4-5 p.m. and 1-2 a.m., all EDT/PDT.

We're still devastated by the passing of "Golden Girl" Estelle Getty. Luckily, the sassy Sicilian Sophia Petrillo lives on thanks to reruns on Lifetime.

What a nice picture, olympic.

------

When they did the Lifetime marathon the other day, the last one they showed was the episode "Old Friends" (picked by the viewers)

"Old Friends"

Sophia meets an old black man on the boardwalk and becomes quick friends with him. However, his strange behavior signals that he has a medical condition, Alzheimer's disease. Meanwhile, Blanche accidentally gives away Rose's teddy bear at a garage sale.
