Edwards' Hotel Hell
Guard Confirms Late-Night Hotel Encounter Between Ex-Sen. John Edwards, Tabloid Reporters
Friday, July 25, 2008
A Beverly Hills hotel security guard told FOXNews.com he intervened this week between a man he identified as former Sen. John Edwards and tabloid reporters who chased down the former presidential hopeful after what they're calling a rendezvous with his mistress and love child.
The Beverly Hilton Hotel guard said he encountered a shaken and ashen-faced Edwards — whom he did not immediately recognize — in a hotel men's room early Tuesday morning in a literal tug-of-war with reporters on the other side of the door.
"What are they saying about me?" the guard said Edwards asked.
"His face just went totally white," the guard said, when Edwards was told the reporters were shouting out questions about Edwards and Rielle Hunter, a woman the National Enquirer says is the mother of his child.
The guard said he escorted Edwards, who was not a registered guest at the hotel, out of the building after 2 a.m. Edwards did not say anything while he was escorted out, said the guard, adding that at times the reporters on the scene were "rough on him," sticking a camera in his face and shouting questions.
The guard did not recognize Edwards at the time of the incident, but said he concluded it was the 2008 presidential hopeful after hearing reports about the incident and finding an Enquirer reporter's notebook at the scene.
The guard said during the chase the reporters had dropped the notebook, which he picked up. "This book has everything in it on him," he said, referring to Edwards. The guard later confirmed Edwards' identity after being shown a photograph.
A former campaign staffer, speaking on condition of anonymity, told FOXNews.com he wishes he were "more surprised" to hear reports Edwards was visiting Hunter. "I'm definitely upset by it. I wish I was more surprised, though."
Edwards this week has repeatedly refused to comment on the Enquirer report. Asked about it on Thursday at an event in New Orleans, he said: "I have no idea what you're asking about. I've responded, consistently, to these tabloid allegations by saying I don't respond to these lies and you know that ... and I stand by that."
Edwards spokesmen did not respond to repeated calls by FOXNews.com to respond to this story.
Beverly Hills Police Sgt. Michael Publicker, meanwhile, confirmed Friday that an incident report was filed with the department by two of the tabloid's reporters. Publicker said that contrary to a published report, a "criminal complaint" was not filed and there are no charges pending.
"It will be looked into," Publicker said, refusing to say whether Edwards would be contacted as part of a formal investigation. "We're not going to comment on the investigation," he said.
Police department spokesman Tony Lee said Publicker told him that Edwards was not named on the incident report.
Enquirer Editor-in-Chief David Perel told FOXNews.com his reporters caught Edwards visiting Hunter and her baby at the hotel earlier Monday evening. Perel said Hunter and Edwards have been occasionally getting together so Edwards can see the baby. Hunter came to Beverly Hills with a male friend, Bob McGovern, said Perel. Hunter and her companion reportedly booked two rooms under McGovern's name, and McGovern picked up Edwards to bring him back to the hotel.
Perel said Enquirer staff had been given information about the planned Edwards-Hunter meeting, and the tabloid sent reporters to the hotel in anticipation of Edwards' arrival. According to the Enquirer, Edwards was first spotted being dropped off at the hotel at 9:45 p.m. PT, about 25 minutes after reporters watched McGovern leave the building in his BMW.
Edwards went to Hunter's room and the two left the hotel together and returned 45 minutes later, Perel said. Edwards reportedly entered her room and stayed there until after 2:30 a.m. PT.
FOXNews.com could not independently confirm the Enquirer's allegations. Perel also declined to identify where the Enquirer received the information about Edwards' alleged visits.
Perel told FOXNews.com that after leaving Hunter's room, Edwards took an elevator to the basement, where he was confronted by two Enquirer reporters. He ran into the bathroom, where he remained until the security guard arrived.
The Enquirer says it has videotape showing Hunter entering the room where she met Edwards, and shows Edwards leaving the same room. However, the Enquirer has thus far declined repeated requests by FOXNews.com to release any photographs or videotape evidence of the incident.
Lynda Simonetti, director of public relations at the Beverly Hilton, refused to comment on the guard's version of the incident, citing the hotel's privacy policy.
"We value the privacy of all the guests," Simonetti told FOXNews.com, adding, "The non-disclosure policy applies to the requests of the names, whether it's past, current or anticipated guests... That's our policy."
Simonetti said she had "no knowledge" of the incident report filed by the two Enquirer reporters, and "I don't have any knowledge of any other circumstances."
As recently as last month, individuals vetting vice presidential candidates for Barack Obama had listed Edwards as a potential running mate. Edwards was viewed as a candidate who could help Obama appeal to white, working-class voters who had favored Hillary Clinton in the primaries.
Edwards, who was John Kerry's running mate in 2004, endorsed Obama in May, saying the presumptive presidential nominee held the same views he did about uniting a divided America.
Before and during the Democratic primaries, Edwards urged all candidates to boycott planned debates on FOX News, even though he had made prior appearances on the channel. One of those debates was to be sponsored by the Congressional Black Caucus.
Last October, the Enquirer reported that several sources said a former campaign worker on Edwards' campaign had been having an affair with the former North Carolina senator. In an e-mail allegedly written by Hunter to a friend, she wrote that she is "in love with John," but it's "difficult because he is married and has kids."
Edwards' wife Elizabeth, whom many have credited as being one of the driving forces behind Edwards' campaign, announced in March that her breast cancer had re-emerged after going into remission following a 2004 diagnosis.
Hunter has said that the father of her child is former Edwards campaign official Andrew Young. The 41-year-old married father of three has also said he is the father.

Poor Elizabeth Edwards. I have so much respect and admiration for the woman. I was such a supporter of John Edwards for the nomination and now for VP, but for me, today, he is history. And imagine his allowing or trying to effect the paternity issue on a MARRIED WITH CHILDREN staffer. That is lower than low IMO.

This story was out there even while he was running for the nomination. Unfortunately, the MSM failed to run with it. I know it would have hurt his wife but it's wound up hurting her anyway. It was unfair to the people to let them consider a man for POTUS who is so dishonest and deceitful - and self-serving to boot. One would think he'd have seen how lucky he was that the story didn't explode and taken the opportunity to clean up his act.
It would be difficult enough to forgive the cheating but having to accept that your husband has had a child with someone else while married to you must indeed be devastating.

Also shows he didn't practice safe sex and so wasn't concerned about passing anything on to Elizabeth either.

I think it just shows we're all sinful and failible (failable? not sure of spelling). (NOT to get off on a N2K type of discussion, LOL.) We just EXPECT more of leaders....but leaders are people too. I dunno. I'm sorta crushed, myself. I did like him SO much. Adultery is hard to take. But look at JFK and Bill Clinton. I think a politician (even POTUS) can have tremendous faults in their personal life but still do a great job as an elected official. I'm conflicted....still shocked.

This is disappointing, if true. FAUX had a segment on it last night, with a NE spokesperson, who to my mind was really bitchy about the whole thing. No one is fallible when it comes to matters of the heart of libido, including our upstanding political personalities. Edwards always has given the appearance of being anything but what it looks like may be his downfalling. What a mess.

Facing questions, Edwards evades reporters
Published: Jul 31, 2008 12:30 AM
It was only three weeks ago that John Edwards was fielding media questions on his chances of filling the Democratic Party's vice presidential slot on Barack Obama's ticket or a potential Cabinet position in an Obama administration.
On Wednesday, however, the former U.S. senator and 2004 vice presidential nominee was eager to duck the press when the questions took a tabloid turn.
About a dozen reporters and photojournalists attended a speech Edwards gave to an AARP Foundation symposium on poverty and aging in Washington. Afterward, he avoided most of the waiting reporters, at least some of whom wanted to question him about recent reports in the National Enquirer that alleged an inappropriate relationship with a former campaign videographer.
Citing unnamed sources, the Enquirer published a story in October claiming that Edwards was having an affair with a woman who filmed a series of campaign videos. The story resurfaced last week in the online version of the Enquirer, which claimed that Edwards had visited the woman and their "love child" July 21 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif.
In October, the woman posted an online statement denying the first story. In December, an Edwards campaign worker claimed to be the father of the woman's then-unborn child.
On Wednesday, Edwards apparently ducked out a side area used by the kitchen staff in the fourth-floor ballroom of Washington's historic Hotel Monaco. Edwards emerged from a lower-level handicap ramp near the rear of the hotel with two men. When approached by a Charlotte Observer reporter, Edwards said, "Can't do it now, I'm sorry" and quickly walked past.
Asked what he was doing at the Beverly Hilton last week, Edwards said "sorry" and got into a waiting car with the other men.
No photographs or video of the alleged California hotel incident have been released by the Enquirer, which described in its online story its reporters' attempts to chase down Edwards. The tabloid reported he hid in a restroom to elude them.
The story has prompted some buzzing in the blogosphere but little public response from Edwards. At a July 23 speech in Houston, Edwards responded to a reporter's question about the Enquirer story by referring to it as "tabloid trash."

Well said. Adultery is hard to take. It affects the whole family and circle of friends, and in some cases, public opinion. He may still be able to continue his politcal career, but I am so NOT in love with him anymore. I think I would feel differently if he'd just admit to it. Enough of the bullchit!

We shouldn't expect nor accept this of everyday people anymore than from our politicians. Time was when a man had respect for himself and his family. Nowadays it's mostly "if it makes you feel good then what the heck."
I've never been enamored with Edwards because I can honestly say I've known many many men like him over the course of my life. I had him pegged the minute I first saw him. And turns out, I wasn't wrong. Men in power are like celebrities or star athletes - there will always be groupies around them. Edwards' money makes him a double attraction.
But even if I was willing to forgive him on the adultery part - the fact that he is not man enough to just stop the chicken-shit hiding and stand up behind this other woman and this other child is unforgiveable.
I read yesterday that there is not even a father listed on this child's birth certificate. That's shameful. As shameful as the fact that he let his friend, Andrew Young (who is also married w/children) take the rap for this child. He does not deserve one second of respect or admiration - he is a creep. There are too many good men in this world to waste one's affections on this guy.

NOVEL TALE OF POL'S 'MISTRESS'
August 6, 2008 --
RIELLE Hunter - the woman reported by the National Enquirer to be John Edwards' mistress and mother of his love child - is no stranger to fans of Jay McInerney. The novelist dated the blonde for a few months in the late 1980s and based his book "Story of My Life" on her.
Hunter was known as Lisa Druck when McInerney met her at Nell's in 1987. "She's a nice girl," the author told Page Six. "She used to be a real party girl.
"When she wasn't out at nightclubs, she was taking acting classes. We dated for only a few months, but in that period, I spent a lot of time with her and her friends, whose behavior intrigued and appalled me to such an extent that I ended up basing a novel on the experience," McInerney recalled.
"It was narrated in the first person from the point of view of an ostensibly jaded, sexually voracious 20-year-old who was inspired by Lisa. I certainly thought of Alison Poole as a sympathetic and ultimately endearing character."
McInerney said he lost track of Hunter after she moved to California. He was unaware she had moved back to Manhattan and was making videos for the Edwards presidential campaign last year, before the supermarket tabloid reported she was the former North Carolina senator's mistress.
Edwards and Hunter flatly denied the Enquirer's report. "It is completely untrue, ridiculous," Edwards said. "I've been in love with the same woman for 30-plus years." His wife, Elizabeth, is battling cancer.
One of Edwards' staffers, Andrew Young, a married father of three, claimed he was the child's dad. But no father at all is listed on the birth certificate for Frances Quinn Hunter, who was born Feb. 27.
The Enquirer reported in exhaustive detail last month how Edwards was spotted visiting Hunter and her baby in a Beverly Hills hotel room. Several newspapers in North Carolina have called on Edwards "to clear the air and set the record straight," as the Greensboro News & Record put it.

John Edwards love child rumours threaten the Barack Obama presidential campaign
Barack Obama is being ordered to distance himself from John Edwards (Damn! Who's pulling Obama's strings?) amid allegations his one-time rival has fathered a love child.
Mr Edwards had been touted as a possible vice president, but yesterday leading Democrats told the former North Carolina senator to come clean about the rumours of his affair with a campaign aide or stay away from the party convention.
Party organisers are furious that Mr Edwards has refused to deny that he’s the father of Rielle Hunter’s baby daughter Frances and fear he is taking attention away from Mr Obama.
Mr Edwards, 55, dropped his own bid for the presidency in January after coming a distant third behind Mr Obama and Hillary Clinton, but he had been expected to make a rousing speech at the Denver convention later this month.
Rumours that Mr Edwards, whose wife Elizabeth is battling breast cancer, fathered the child were ignored by the mainstream media until yesterday when the National Enquirer printed a grainy photograph allegedly showing Mr Edwards cradling the baby in a Los Angeles hotel room last month.
Mr Edwards dismissed earlier Enquirer stories about his affair with Miss Hunter, a 44-year-old campaign videographer, as “tabloid trash.”
The magazine released the “spy-cam” photo supposedly showing Mr Edwards inside the hotel room on July 21 as proof. When reporters confronted him in the lobby he fled into the men’s toilets and refused to come out until he was rescued by security guards.
Last night it was not clear how the Enquirer had obtained a photo that appeared to have been taken inside the room when the curtains were closed. But Mr Edwards’ supporters are sure to paint him as a victim of dirty tricks.
Until the photograph emerged Mr Edwards, who was John Kerry’s running mate in the 2004 presidential election, had managed to avoid questions about the affair. But by yesterday afternoon newspapers, television stations and websites across America were running the story – infuriating Democratic leaders who want the focus to remain on Mr Obama, the 47-year-old Illinois senator who will square off against Republican John McCain in the November 4 election.
By last night even Mr Edwards’ biggest supporters were demanding he come clean with the public, as well as his wife of 30 years and their three children.
'If it’s not true, he has to issue a stronger denial. It’s very damaging,' said Gary Pearce, who ran Mr Edwards 1998 senate campaign.
'He’s got to stand up and say, ‘This is not my child and I’m going to take legal action against the people who are spreading these lies.’ It’s not enough to say it’s tabloid trash.'
Former Democratic National Committee chairman Don Fowler said Mr Edwards’ political standing was slipping by the day because he refused to address the story.
'If there is not an explanation that’s satisfactory, acceptable and meets high moral standards, the answer is no, he would not be a prime candidate to make a major address at the convention,' Mr Fowler added.

Edwards Admits Sexual Affair; Lied as Presidential Candidate
Edwards Admits Sexual Affair; Lied as Presidential Candidate
In ABC News Interview, Edwards Says He Cheated, but Did Not Father Child
By RHONDA SCHWARTZ and BRIAN ROSS
August 8, 2008 —
John Edwards repeatedly lied during his Presidential campaign about an extramarital affair with a novice filmmaker, the former Senator admitted to ABC News today.
In an interview for broadcast tonight on Nightline, Edwards told ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff he did have an affair with 44-year old Rielle Hunter, but said that he did not love her.
Edwards also denied he was the father of Hunter's baby girl, Frances Quinn, although the one-time Democratic Presidential candidate said he has not taken a paternity test.
Edwards said he knew he was not the father based on timing of the baby's birth on February 27, 2008. He said his affair ended too soon for him to have been the father.
A former campaign aide, Andrew Young, has said he was the father of the child.
According to friends of Hunter, Edwards met her at a New York city bar in 2006. His political action committee later paid her $114,000 to produce campaign website documentaries despite her lack of experience.
Edwards said the affair began during the campaign after she was hired. Hunter traveled with Edwards around the country and to Africa.
Edwards said his wife, Elizabeth, and others in his family became aware of the affair in 2006.
Edwards made a point of telling Woodruff that his wife's cancer was in remission when he began the affair with Hunter. Elizabeth Edwards has since been diagnosed with an incurable form of the disease.
When the National Enquirer first reported the alleged Edwards-Hunter affair last October 11, Edwards, his campaign staff and Hunter vociferously denounced the report.
"The story is false, it's completely untrue, it's ridiculous," Edwards told reporters then.
He repeated his denials just two weeks ago.
Edwards today admitted the National Enquirer was correct when it reported he had visited Hunter at the Beverly Hills Hilton last month.
The former Senator said his wife had not known about the meeting.
Since becoming pregnant, Hunter has lived under assumed names in a series of expensive homes in North Carolina and, more recently, in Santa Barbara, California.
Edwards denied paying any money to Hunter to keep her from going public but said it was possible some of his friends or supporters may have made payments without telling him.
He said he would ask questions about any possible arrangement.

More on the CHEATER Edwards
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards on Friday admitted to an extramarital affair while his wife was battling cancer. He denied fathering the woman's daughter. Edwards told ABC News that he lied repeatedly about the affair with 42-year-old Rielle Hunter but said that he didn't love her.
He said he has not taken a paternity test but knows he isn't the father because of the timing of the affair and the birth.
ABC said a former Edwards campaign staffer claims he is the father, not Edwards.
Hunter's daughter, Frances Quinn Hunter, was born on Feb. 27, 2008, and no father's name is given on the birth certificate filed in California.
Three weeks ago, the National Enquirer said its reporters caught Edwards visiting Hunter at a California hotel. In the interview, scheduled to air on ABC News' "Nightline," Edwards said the tabloid was correct when it reported on his meeting with Hunter at the Beverly Hills Hotel last month.
Edwards was a top contender for the Democratic nomination for president, pursuing his party's nod even after announcing that his wife, Elizabeth, had a deadly form of cancer.
He placed second in the Iowa caucuses last January but dropped out of the race a few weeks later. He has been mentioned as a possible vice presidential choice for Barack Obama. The former North Carolina senator was the Democratic nominee for vice president in 2004.
David Bonior, Edwards' campaign manager for his 2008 presidential bid, said Friday he was disappointed and angry after hearing about Edwards' confession.
"Thousands of friends of the senators and his supporters have put their faith and confidence in him and he's let him down," said Bonior, a former congressman from Michigan. "They've been betrayed by his action."
Asked whether the affair would damage Edwards' future aspirations in public service, Bonior replied: "You can't lie in politics and expect to have people's confidence."
In 2006, Edwards' political action committee paid $100,000 in a four-month span to a newly formed firm run by Rielle Hunter, who directed the production of just four Web videos, one a mere 2 1/2 minutes long.
The payments from Edwards' One America Committee to Midline Groove Productions LLC started on July 5, 2006, five days after Hunter incorporated the firm in Delaware.
Midline provided "Website/Internet services," according to reports that Edwards' PAC filed with the Federal Election Commission.
Midline's work product consists of four YouTube videos showing Edwards in informal settings as he prepares to make speeches in Storm Lake, Iowa, and Pittsburgh, as he prepares for an appearance on "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" and travels in Uganda in 2006.
Edwards' PAC following the six-figure payment with two smaller payments totaling $14,461, the last on April 1, 2007.
At the time Hunter was compiling the videos in mid-2006, Edwards was preparing a run for president.
Hunter's name appears on credits in the four videos as director and cameraman.
Episode One of the four videos captures a conversation between Edwards and an unseen woman as the two chat aboard a plane about an upcoming speech in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Cutting between clips of the speech and the conversation with the woman, Edwards touches on his standard political themes, declaring that government must do a better job of addressing the great issues of the day, from poverty and education to jobs and the war in Iraq.
"I want to see our party lead on the great moral issues - yes, me a Democrat using that word - the great moral issues that face our country," Edwards tells the crowd. "If we want to live in a moral, honest just America and if we want to live in a moral and just world, we can't wait for somebody else to do it. We have to do it."
