Australian tourist in a coma after Greece nightclub bashing
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) says a 20-year-old man from New South Wales remains in a Greek hospital after a reported altercation with bouncers at a Greek nightspot.
Greek police say the man is in a coma in an Athens hospital after being bashed by bouncers at a popular nightclub on the holiday island of Mykonos.
Police said the man, whose identity has not been released, was among six Australians who ran up against the four doormen at the Super Paradise club, a well-known beachfront hotspot.
He was reportedly hit on the head with a baton, while two of his companions sustained minor injuries.
The man was sent to a health centre on Mykonos, then to hospital, before he was transferred to the Henry Dunant hospital in the Greek capital where he was said to be in a serious coma.
DFAT says another man, a 20-year-old cousin of the first man, also from New South Wales, was also treated but has since been released.
A DFAT spokesman says consular officials from the Australian Embassy in Athens are assisting both men.
Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith has praised Greek authorities for helping the two cousins.
Mr Smith says Australia regards the attack as very serious.
"We're satisfied that appropriate medical assistance is being rendered," he said.
"We're also very satisfied that the relevant police authorities are pursuing and investigating the matter. It is a frankly a disturbing event, a serious assault and our thoughts and sympathies are with the two men and their families."
Greek police said they arrested two of the bouncers, and were looking for the others, after they were told about the incident on Tuesday (local time) by the Australian embassy.
The two bouncers who have been arrested claim the Australians were suspected of having stolen bags and wallets in the nightclub, a police official said.
Both bouncers are set to appear before prosecutors.

New South Wales man Doujon Zammit and his cousin, both 20, were attacked earlier this week.

Family of bashed tourist likely to turn off life support
The father of the Australian tourist who is in a critical condition after being attacked at a Greek resort says the family will probably give permission for his life support to be turned off today.
Doujon Zammit and his cousin, both 20 and from New South Wales, were set upon by bouncers outside a nightclub on the popular resort island of Mykonos.
A senior Greek police officer says the 20-year-old Australian is fighting for his life in the intensive care ward of Errikos Dinan Hospital in Athens.
Mr Zammit's father told reporters that doctors indicated his son was brain dead.
He said his son's life support could be turned off today (Friday) and his body taken home.
Mr Zammit is believed to have suffered severe cranial injuries and has undergone emergency surgery.
Police say he was among six Australians who ran up against four doormen at the Super Paradise club, a well-known beachfront hotspot.
He was reportedly hit on the head with a baton, while two of his companions sustained minor injuries.
Greek police said they arrested two of the bouncers and were looking for the others, after they were told about the incident on Tuesday (local time) by the Australian embassy.
A police official said the two bouncers who have been arrested claim the Australians were suspected of having stolen bags and wallets in the nightclub.
The bouncers who have been arrested are set to appear before prosecutors.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) says Mr Zammit's cousin has been released from hospital.
A DFAT spokesman says consular officials from the Australian Embassy in Athens are assisting both men.
Earlier, Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith praised Greek authorities for helping the men and described the assault on the young Australian, who was touring Europe, as a very serious and disturbing incident.
Mr Zammit's friends have set up a Facebook group in his honour called "Only the good die young".

This is just terrible. I will never understand the brutality of mankind.
I don't care if this young man was creating a problem of some kind. Why this type of violence?

Mum's final goodbye for slain son
Oliver Zammit the father of Doujon
The mother of a young Sydney man left in a coma after a clash with bouncers in Greece managed a final, remote goodbye for her son as doctors switched off his life support.
Doujon Zammit's mother, on the phone from the family’s Sydney home, listened as a priest read prayers for her 20-year-old son by his bed in an Athens hospital.
"Mrs Zammit said goodbye over the phone and they switched off the life support," a friend of the family told ninemsn.
"He's gone."
Doctors said Zammit had been "clinically dead" since Thursday, two days after he suffered serious head injuries in the assault outside a nightclub on the island of Mykonos.
His father switched off the life support machine on Friday afternoon, state television NET said.
Zammit's mother had reportedly been unable to make the journey to Athens after falling ill at Sydney Airport.
Maria Kairi, general director of the Henry Dunant hospital, said Zammit's family had decided to donate his organs. Zammit's heart will go to an Australian national currently hospitalised in Athens' Onassis Cardiac Surgery Centre.
"They have also accepted to donate the rest of his organs to save Greek people," Kairi said.
Zammit was among six Australians involved in a confrontation early on Tuesday morning with four staff at the Tropicana club on Paradise beach, a well-known summer hotspot.
The Australians were suspected of having stolen bags and wallets in the nightclub, an accusation later dismissed by police.
Zammit was reportedly hit on the head with a baton, while two of his companions sustained minor injuries.
He was sent to a health centre on Mykonos, then to hospital, before he was transferred to hospital in the Greek capital.
Police charged one of the bouncers and a parking lot attendant with attempted murder.
The two suspects face additional charges after having allegedly pretended to be police officers to stop the Australians and search them for the missing items.
Two more bouncers were charged with causing bodily harm.
"I would like you to know that this is going to tie myself and my family... to Greece," Zammit's father Oliver told journalists as he fought back tears.
He added his thanks for the support he had received while in Greece.
The incident has sparked anger in Greece where Tourism Minister Aris Spiliotopoulos is due to travel to Mykonos for a meeting with local authorities.
Hundreds of messages of sympathy have been sent to a newly-created Facebook page.
