Search crews on the ground and in the air spent Thursday trying to locate a 21-year-old mother of two who never showed up at her home after leaving work Wednesday night.

Amber Clark Pennell, 21, of 6658 Stone Mountain Road in the Buffalo Cove community, left Hannah's BBQ in Lenoir at approximately 10 p.m. Wednesday, calling her husband to tell him she was leaving work and would be stopping at Holiday Superette on U.S. 321 to get gas and then would be home. Pennell never reached her home, and her husband, Mitchell Pennell, reported her missing at the Caldwell County Sheriff's Office around 2 a.m. Thursday.

Late Thursday afternoon, authorities began another search using all-terrain vehicles and foot patrols in the Buffalo Cove area. Emergency Management Director Tommy Courtner expected that search to take at least two to three hours and added that law enforcement reported no leads in Pennell's disappearance as of Thursday evening.

Caldwell County Sheriff Alan Jones said locating missing people is a priority for his department.

"Every (missing persons case) is a dire situation," Jones said. "We will concentrate on finding those missing persons."

Jones said there are no confirmed conclusions about what might have happened to Amber Pennell, adding that investigators and patrol officers searching for her are not ruling out any possibility, but are making every effort possible to locate her. He said finding her husband's 1994 white Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, which she was driving, is vital at this stage of the search.

"We need to see if we can locate her vehicle first," Jones said. "That will give us a good start. That's a vital part of the search. We need to find it. That may give us some clue of what happened to her or where she is."

Officers with the Sheriff's Office and rescue personnel from Caldwell County Emergency Management, along with family members of Amber Pennell, have been walking the roads and combing the wooded areas of the Buffalo Cove area near Pennell's home in search of her. Investigators also have spoken to members of her family, but they have not been able to provide any information as to her whereabouts.

Because of the wide search area involved, the Sheriff's Office requested aerial support from the N.C. Highway Patrol Aerial Unit. The helicopter arrived in Caldwell County from Asheville around 10:30 a.m. Thursday and began flyovers of areas also being patrolled by deputies.

"There are a lot of wooded areas and trails out there," Jones said. "They can cover a larger area a lot quicker from the air. When we called, they were on their way."

Jones said search efforts were concentrated between U.S. 321 and Todd's Country Store with officers and search teams driving and walking the roads, checking any areas where Amber Pennell or the truck might be.

Sheriff's Office Lt. Kevin Bean flew in the helicopter with NCHP pilots J.D. Israel and R.D. Gasaway to keep communication between air and ground search teams.

"We're going to be looking for the vehicle, possibly wrecked, in the Buffalo Cove area, and we'll expand our search from her original route," Bean said.

Jones and Bean both indicated, however, that heavy foliage in that northeastern section of the county may prevent the air search team from locating Amber Pennell or her husband's vehicle, which is described as white in color with blue stripes on the sides similar to the Nike swoosh. On the driver's side window is a stick figure of a girl kicking a soccer ball in white with the name "Gracelyn." On the passenger side window is a stick figure of a boy hitting a baseball in white with the name "Cameron." On the left side of the tailgate is a sticker that reads "Gracelyn and Cameron's Dad." It has a North Carolina license plate of GBAYCAM.

"The tree canopy may make it difficult to spot," Bean said.

Detectives with the Sheriff's Office spent time Thursday morning checking with convenience stores and businesses along U.S. 321 on into the Patterson community to determine if anyone had seen Amber Pennell since she left Hannah's Wednesday night. Several people at some of those businesses recognized her but did not recall seeing her, and others did not recognize her from the photo presented by investigators.

"Everybody who knew her said she was a nice girl, very family-oriented," Sheriff's Office Det. Andrea Longo said. "No one had anything bad to say about her at all."

Detectives secured a video surveillance tape from the Fastop convenience store located beside Hannah's and were viewing it to determine if a woman on the tape was Amber Pennell.

Det. Shelly Hartley spoke with employees at Hannah's BBQ who told her that Amber Pennell seemed to be fine when she left work. Family members also told Hartley that Amber Pennell never would leave her children, Gracelyn, 4, and Cameron, 1, which adds even more mystery to the case.

Hartley also had been contacting people with phone numbers stored in Amber Pennell's cell phone, given to her by Mitchell Pennell. Amber Pennell left her cell phone in her car when she took her husband's truck to work. Hartley said none of the people she had contacted had any information to offer about Amber Pennell or where she might be.

Mitchell Pennell, who last saw his wife Wednesday morning before he left for work in Alexander County, told investigators that it was not common for her to stay out past 11 p.m.

"We know we have a missing person, and we need to find her," Jones said. "We need everybody's help in keeping an eye open so we can find her. I'm hoping we drive down the road and pass or meet her somewhere."

Anybody with information about Amber Pennell or who may have seen the truck she was driving should contact the Caldwell County Sheriff's Office at 828-758-2324.

The marquee outside Hannah's Bar-B-Q clearly shows the concern co-workers of Amber Pennell have for her well-being. It simply reads, "Father let there be light for Amber."

That clear message was placed on the marquee Thursday afternoon, a little more than 12 hours after Pennell, a 21-year-old mother of two, was reported missing by her husband, Mitchell Pennell.

The search to find her, now entering its third day, continues, but the people who know Pennell said it's not like her to just disappear.

"This is not like her at all," said Angie Camp of Hannah's. "Amber is a good person, very friendly. She'd give you the shirt off her back. She cared about people that much. And she loved her kids. She would not leave them."

Those kids are her 4-year-old daughter Gracelyn and 1-year-old son Cameron. They last saw their mother Wednesday before she left for work. No one has seen or heard from Amber Pennell since about 10 p.m. Wednesday when she called her husband to tell him she was leaving work, stopping for gas and then would be on home. She never made it to her home on Stone Mountain Road in the Buffalo Cove community.

"She always called home to let him know she was on her way," Camp said, adding that nothing seemed out of the ordinary with Amber Pennell when she left the restaurant. "She'd even call home two or three times a night to check on her kids."

Detectives and deputies from the Caldwell County Sheriff's Office began their search for Amber Pennell in earnest Thursday morning. Detectives contacted businesses along 321 from Lenoir into Patterson, showing photos of Amber Pennell in an attempt to gain some information about her. They contacted family members and friends. They combed the areas of Buffalo Cove around her home in an attempt to locate her or her the white Toyota Tacoma pickup truck of her husband's that she was driving. They even relied on the North Carolina Highway Patrol Aerial Unit to conduct a search by helicopter, but there have been no signs of her.

Caldwell County Emergency Management and local fire and rescue departments sent ATV teams into Buffalo Cove Thursday evening, searching until after midnight for Amber Pennell. Search and rescue teams returned along with deputies and detectives Friday, all in attempts to piece together what might have happened to the young lady. They searched trails and some of the ravines along the winding roads of Buffalo Cove that might have been hidden from aerial view by the tree canopy. They followed streams and creeks, looking back up steep embankments to make sure they covered all territory in the rugged area.

"The thick underbrush and growth of foliage makes it difficult to see," Caldwell Emergency Services Director Tommy Courtner said. "We are trying to make sure we cover everything we can."

Despite the searches going on and investigation into Amber Pennell's disapperance there were no new developments Friday, no leads of significance.

"We're gathering as much information about her as we can, but so far we haven't been able to come up with any leads," said Jeff Stafford, captain of the Sheriff's Office investigations division. "At this point, anything is possible, but we're hoping she'll turn up soon. We hope she's out there somewhere, will be found and found OK."

There has been confirmation that Amber Pennell did stop at the Holiday To Go on U.S. 321 across the highway from Valmead Fire Department. A clerk working there told investigators that Amber Pennel did stop there for gas the night she disappeared.

Outside of that, investigators don't have a lot to go on, though they continue to search for the missing woman. Stafford indicated that detectives are looking at a number of different scenarios without eliminating any of them at this point.

"We haven't ruled out foul play, an accident or the idea that maybe she just went somewhere on her own," Stafford said. "We're just trying to reach out to as many people as we can in an attempt to find her."

People throughout the county also are doing their part to help find Amber Pennell. Posters with her picture and information about her have been put up at various locations, all in an effort to locate the young mother.

"We're all family here, and it's been really hard to work," Camp said. "It's been real quiet around here. It's very hard. We all have our minds on her."

Camp said employees of Hannah's gathered for prayer Thursday night after closing, and they did the same thing before opening Friday.

"We believe in God and know what He can do," Camp said. "We know that He'll take care of her and that she's OK."

Caldwell mother missing

Authorities in Caldwell County are looking for a 21-year-old mother who hasn't been seen since leaving work Wednesday night.

The missing woman is Amber Clarke Pennell, who is married with two children.

The Caldwell County sheriff's office says Pennell was last seen Wednesday night when she left her job at a Lenoir restaurant and headed home to the Buffalo Cove area of Caldwell County. Her husband reported her missing about 2 a.m. today. Police say she typically takes U.S. 321 home, and they are concentrating their efforts along that road today.

Lenoir police, sheriff's deputies, and the N.C. Highway Patrol are involved in the search, including the use of search planes.

Police say Pennell was driving a white 1994 Toyota pickup truck with N.C. license tag GBAYCAM.

Pennell is described as a white female, 5 feet 1 and 120 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes. She was wearing blue jeans, a blue blouse with a floral design, and white tennis shoes. She has a tattoo on her left foot with the words “Gracelyn and Cameron.”

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call the Caldwell County sheriff's office, at 828-758-2324.

I wonder what could have happened. Doesn't sound like the type to just up and leave her children. Hope she is found safe...

I hope she is too and whats really odd is this is a small town. The area she was working in is well lit. She left at 10pm from her shift there and made her way less then a block away to another very lit gas station to get gas. After that she just vanished. There is no way she could have just vanished between the gas station and her home without being noticed (not the route she took home anyway).

She was found. She crashed her car and was 75 ft down an embankment. She is alive.
