Amtrak bringing hundreds of storm evacuees to Memphis

Nearly 2,000 evacuees will be heading to Memphis by train today as Hurricane Gustav continues its methodical trek toward the Gulf Coast.
One Amtrak train carrying upward of 1,000 evacuees left New Orleans shortly before noon today, with another scheduled to depart around 4 p.m. this afternoon.
Evacuees will continue to arrive in Memphis by rail through Monday, as the trains arriving late tonight will turn around and head back to New Orleans to pick up two more loads of evacuees to bring to Memphis.
“We are expecting ... up to 6,000 in-state; Memphis is prepared for 3,000,” said Jeremy Heidt, TEMA spokesman.
The first train is expected to arrive around 10 p.m. tonight
The passengers are New Orleans residents who needed assistance in evacuating because they don't have access to a vehicle, can't afford to travel or special medical needs.
"The city processes them, and whoever the city sends to us, we take," Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said.
