Jennifer Lee Hampton Disappeared From Knoxville Motel

WATERLOO, Ala. -- A north Alabama town is abuzz over the mysterious disappearance of a recent homecoming queen from the local high school.

Jennifer Lee Hampton of Waterloo hasn't been seen since she vanished from a motel during a work-related trip to Knoxville, Tenn. And friends and relatives are worried about what may have happened to the 21-year-old woman, who was homecoming queen at Waterloo High School.

Principal Ray Harrison says the mood is surreal as people await word in Waterloo, a town of about 200 in northwest Alabama.

Hampton was in Knoxville with three other employees to help set up a new branch of the Mama Blues Southern Cafe, a buffet restaurant based in Alabama where Hampton works. They called police on Saturday after realizing she was gone from their motel.

"Officers briefly looked into the room and thought what they saw was suspicious," Knoxville Police spokesman Darrell DeBusk said. "We believe that she was a victim of foul play.

Police declined to say what evidence in the room made investigators suspicious, but Mama Blues owner Steve Barnhill told ABC News that he understood there was no forced entry into the hotel room and sheets were ripped off one of the beds.

According to Barnhill, Hampton expressed concern to a boyfriend she was talking to on the phone before she went to bed about two men outside her room.

DeBusk declined to confirm or comment on these assertions.

Hampton's cell phone was also left in the room, police said.

Since Saturday, police have searched for Hampton both in the hotel and in the surrounding area.

"Saturday night through Sunday we used a search-and-recovery team to search the immediate area. We also used tracking dogs," DeBusk said. "Yesterday we used more than four dozen of our officers to 'grid search' in a wetland area that was near the hotel."

Police have questioned family, co-workers and friends but said they did not have any suspects yet.

"We have conducted numerous interviews," DeBusk said. "We have re-interviewed several individuals."

Those who knew Hampton described her as hardworking and kind.

"She was real sweet," said a co-worker who worked with Hampton for three years but did not want to be identified. "She didn't smoke, didn't drink, didn't party. ... She was always working."

Barnhill, who is offering a $5,000 reward for information regarding Hampton's whereabouts, said his employees in Alabama were concerned.

"She was real well-liked down in Florence Ala., her home restaurant," Barnhill said. "[Employees] are calling up here once an hour wanting to know more."

According to Barnhill, Hampton was devoted to her family, speaking or texting with her mother and twin sister several times a day. Barnhill drove her mother, stepfather and two sisters to Knoxville to help with the investigation.

"She was real tight with her family. She would never leave her cell phone in her room," he said. "She would never leave with anybody."

Jennifer Lee Hampton, 21, a former homecoming queen from Waterloo, Ala., hasn't been seen since she disappeared from a Knoxville motel last weekend while on a business trip.

Police have been treating the disappearance as a missing persons case and searching wooded areas near the motel where Hampton was last seen Sept. 19.

Body Identified As Missing Homecoming Queen
Jennifer Lee Hampton Disappeared From Knoxville Motel

UPDATED: 10:56 am EDT September 30, 2008

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Police confirmed that a body found in a lake near Knoxville was that of an Alabama woman last seen at a local motel more than a week ago and said the case was being investigated as a homicide.

The body discovered by a fisherman in Melton Hill Lake on Saturday was that of 21-year-old Jennifer Lee Hampton, Knoxville Police spokesman Darrell DeBusk said Monday
.

"The cause of death can not be released at this time due to the ongoing investigation," DeBusk said. "The death of Ms. Hampton is being investigated as a homicide."

Separately, WNOX reported police had arrested two illegal immigrants during the search for Hampton, but wouldn't say if they believe the two men were linked to the case.

Family attorney Eddie Daniel told a news conference earlier that Hampton's relatives believed the body was hers based on the description
.

"I wish we'd had a better outcome, but we just don't think that's going to happen," Daniel said.

Hampton, a former homecoming queen from Waterloo, Ala., disappeared Sept. 19 from a Knoxville motel during a business trip here to train staff for a new restaurant.

Fisherman David Goode told The Knoxville News Sentinel that he found the victim's nude body floating about 10 feet from the bank of the lake, less than 10 miles from the motel.

Hampton's family planned to return to Alabama to arrange services for "Jenny." Her twin sister, Michelle, has been in Knoxville since Saturday. Daniel said Hampton's ambition was to become a nurse, to help others

Teen Charged With Alabama Homecoming Queen's Murder

POSTED: 10:19 am EDT October 1, 2008
UPDATED: 11:05 am EDT October 1, 2008

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Knoxville police charged a teenager in the death of a former Alabama homecoming queen whose body was found in a lake.

Police spokesman Darrell Debusk said 19-year-old Valentino Vasquez Miranda was charged with first-degree felony murder on Wednesday morning in the killing of 21-year-old Jennifer Lee Hampton.

DeBusk said Miranda has been held in jail since Sept. 27, when he was arrested for forgery.

The murder charge was filed four days after Hampton's body was identified and 12 days after the young woman from Waterloo, Ala., disappeared from a local motel

Motel worker accused in Jennifer Lee Hampton's slaying

Illegal immigrant used key to enter room, kill Alabamian, police say

By Matt Lakin (Contact)
Thursday, October 2, 2008

Police say an illegal immigrant who worked there used his master key card to open that door, then strangled the former homecoming queen from Alabama in her West Knoxville motel room during the early morning of Sept. 20.

Valentino Vasquez Miranda, 19, faces a charge of first-degree murder in Hampton's death. Authorities served him with the warrant Wednesday morning in jail, where he's been held on a forgery charge since Hampton's death more than a week ago.

Miranda remains there with bond set at $1 million. His lawyer, Joseph Fanduzz, said he hadn't talked with Miranda and couldn't discuss the case yet.

The charges came a dozen days after Hampton, 21, disappeared from the Days Inn on Lovell Road and four days after a fisherman found her nude body floating in Melton Hill Lake, fewer than 10 miles from the motel. A preliminary autopsy found she'd been strangled.

Hampton, a native of Waterloo, Ala., planned to enter nursing school and had come to Knoxville to help train new workers for the opening of Mama Blue's Buffet restaurant. Friends and family plan to say their goodbyes at a memorial service today.

Hampton's mother, Cynthia Senn, along with her stepfather, grandmother and sisters, learned of the arrest as they headed home to Alabama for the funeral, said their lawyer, Eddie Daniel.

"We believe the Knoxville Police Department has a strong case against him," Daniel said. "We understand the investigation is continuing and believe we will see the person or persons responsible for her death brought to justice."

Motel records for Miranda's key card, together with his bloody clothes and a tip from his worried wife, led to his arrest, according to court records.

Miranda and his wife, Rosa Rodriguez Hernandez, lived and worked at the motel. KPD Investigator Steve Still arrested Miranda and another man, 38-year-old Rogelio Melchor, on state forgery charges the day of Hampton's disappearance after Still said they showed him fake Social Security cards. Melchor hasn't been charged in the killing.

The wife turned over Miranda's bloody clothes the same day, Still wrote in an arrest warrant. DNA tests showed that blood came from Hampton, according to the warrant, and police said motel records show Miranda used his key card to open her door.

The warrant doesn't explain how Hampton's blood got on Miranda's clothes - whether from a struggle or other injuries - and police wouldn't discuss that aspect of the case Wednesday. Investigators said they're waiting for forensic test results to determine whether Hampton might have been raped.

"It obviously has not been ruled out yet," said KPD Deputy Chief Gary Price, commander of the Criminal Investigation Division. "I really can't say anymore about that."

Police said more charges and arrests could follow, depending on test results.

"It all depends on where the investigation leads," Price said.

The warrant doesn't list a motive for Hampton's killing. For her family, no explanation would be enough.

"Nobody can understand how any human being can commit such a horrendous act against such a beautiful, caring young lady," said Daniel, the family's lawyer.

Police could reveal more details when Miranda appears in court Oct. 10 for a preliminary hearing. Hampton's family says they'll be there.

"The family will attend any and all court hearings," Daniel said.

The motel's manager, Nick Patel, cooperated fully throughout the investigation, police said. Authorities said they don't expect any charges against him for hiring Miranda or Melchor.

"Not if the motel was working in good faith and if the documents looked normal," said Temple Black, regional spokesman for the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

ICE put a hold on Miranda after his arrest, which would have kept him from going free, even with bail money. The agency won't get involved in his case or Melchor's until those cases wrap up at the state level, Black said.

Still, the lead KPD investigator and other officers have worked day and night on the case since the morning Hampton's co-workers reported her missing.

"To say hundreds of hours would not be unreasonable when you consider all the efforts and resources that went into the investigation," said Price, the deputy chief.

A friend last saw Hampton the night of Sept. 19 as she went into her motel room around 9:30 p.m. Her mother talked to her on the phone about two hours later.

She didn't show up for work the next day. Officers searched her room and found it in disarray, with her cell phone, which she always carried, left behind.

Police and rescuers spent the next week searching until a man fishing for bass on his day off spotted a body floating face down in the lake Saturday near the Solway Bridge, just across the Anderson County line. Authorities identified the body as Hampton's two days later.
