I guess I am not understanding if Marlies really was a victim of false identity or if she was targetted.

I posted this under the news articles plus the Dutch version.
So the attempted gangster story abduction must not be true.

In 2002 Pieters took a Czech woman hostage on the island, who he raped for days. Also he raped before, as a 16 year old , in a violent way, a couple that caught him at a burglary. The mother of the suspect is picked up yesterday to be heard about her son.

Going back to his history, if he was convicted for these offenses he certainly did not serve much time and was not rehabilitated.

It's astonishing to me the light/lenient sentencing for crimes such as these! Shocked

That 2002 crime was kidnapping and rape, at the very least. What are the sentencing guidelines in Dutch law for convictions of such crimes?

I totally agree! Although I like our justice system overall, the only thing I don't like are the penalties...they are too low, imo.

Father Marlies : No grudge against Bonaire
KRALENDIJK - Jan Willem van der Kouw, father of the murdered Marlies, thanked during the commemoration of his daughter, the police of Bonaire to find the body of his daughter.

The brother, father, mother and sister of Marlies during the memorial service (vrnl) PHOTO ANP

'That was the largest gift in these circumstances,''said Van der Kouw Thursday at the end of the afternoon (local time).

,, We cherish no grudge against Bonaire'', he said. Also mother Lily, Marlies' Nienke sister and two friends held a speech during the service.

In the youth center Bonaire Young collected hundreds of islanders themselves to the service for the 24-year-old from Leusden apothekersassistente to attend.

The service, presided over by a clergyman, was very emotional. For many interested was no room, so they had to attend outside the service. Apart from family, friends and island residents, various dignitaries were also present.

The parents of Marlies are already weeks in Bonaire, but have so far not yet been shown in public. The family Van der Kouw has all this time not even talk with the press.

After the meeting in Bonaire Young has held a silent march to the place where Marlies in the night from Saturday 20 to Sunday, September 21 disappeared at the Water and Electricity Company in the district of Hato Bonaire.

Vader: Geen wrok tegen Bonaire

iquitos, 3rd strike and he murdered someone. Keeping a woman captive for 9 days and raping her for days plus burglarizing and raping even again.
Of course you cannot lock people up in advance but when there is a history....then different story. The investigation is not over yet anyway.

As always, the general poplulation suffers. They are the innocent ones. A few bad apples spoil the barrel and you have to trust the law to put these rapers away somewhere they cannot harm anyone.

I should have said also that the victim and the victims family suffers the most, of course.

It's just frightening and sad Hannie. If this guy had remained in prison, Marlies would still be alive today. Sad

sarge: we only know the superficial version of the past events. we don't know the legal one. i will defer judgement until we do. i don't like the press painting superficial pictures inviting the public to jump to conclusions. hindsight is always 20/20. but you cant lock everybody up use they might do something if you let them out. everybody might do something.

I agree. That is why I said that the investigation is not over yet.
It really has been hard to draw any conclusions except that the suspect does have a prior history of violent behavior. That we should be pretty sure of
from the actual press releases from Bonaire.

this one is obviously a bad apple but there are always two sides to every story. in the former case he may have had an intimate thing with the woman before he "kidnapped" and held her. i don't know about the case when he was 16.
