How to post an image by RatPatrol.
| Code: |
Okay guys... this talk is kinda scary - it doesn't have to be difficult! Let me try my hand at an image-posting tutorial here. I'm writing this in a Code box so the system doesn't turn the example URLs and tags into something else. Note that you should NOT use a Code box to post images for real!!
***************
If the picture is on your hard drive, it's going to have to be put somewhere on the web first. Photobucket is an ideal place - it is free and its operation is self explanatory and well documented on the Photobucket site. Please do not use TinyPic - it goes down all the time and when it's down, pages here with TinyPic images have trouble loading.
So Step 1 is to go to photobucket.com, get an account if you don't already have one, log in, and follow the directions to upload the picture from your hard drive to your Photobucket account.
Step 2: Once the picture is uploaded it will appear in your Photobucket "album".
Step 3: Below the thumbnail of your picture (in the Photobucket album) will be 3 textboxes labelled URL, TAG and IMG. Copy the contents of the URL textbox by highlighting the contents and hitting <CTRL> (or right-clicking and selecting Copy if you are really lazy!).
What you copied from the URL textbox should look approximately like this:
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b172/username/picturename.jpg (with /username/ actually being your Photobucket user name, and /picturename.jpg actually being the filename of the pic you are trying to post.)
Step 4: Start composing a post. When you are ready to insert your picture, hit the "Img" button ONCE, or simply type
The resulting line in you post should look like this:

What you have is the URL that points to the image file, and it is "wrapped" within an image-tag pair ([img] [/img]). Works just like HTML code, actually - just slightly different syntax and delimiters.
Now finish your post and hit Preview to see if it all worked out right.

If the picture is on some website, you can skip the Photobucket stuff and directly link to where the image is located.
Step 1a: Mozilla/Firefox users - right-click on the image and select Copy Image Location (NOT Copy Link Location).
Step 1b: Internet Explorer users - get a real browser (j/k) - right-click on the image and select Properties. In the Properties Panel that pops up, highlight the text that *follows* "Address:", right-click and select Copy.
What you just copied should look something like this:
http://somesite.com/picturename.jpg (with /somesite.com/ actually being the URL of the site the picture resides on, and /picturename.jpg actually being the filename of the pic you are trying to post.)
Step 2: Start composing a post.

I hope this puts all the "I can't post pix" issues to rest for good. Not trying to be a smartass here, but I honestly don't know how to simplify the process any further. I am willing to take PMs for further help on this subject, but only if you a) have given it an honest try on your own first, and b) you are female and hot :) ;)
Good Luck,

Thank you, ratpatrol.
It's cool to read that the photobucket account is free.

Great tutorial, RP - thanks. I don't know anything about the photo sites, but there are free webpage accounts at places like Tripod and Geocities, then people could try making a webpage if they wanted to.
