MYSTERY OVER PHILIP'S LATEST GUFF
By Don Mackay And Damien Fletcher

THERE is more than a whiff of suspicion about just WHAT made the Royals crack up during the Queen's 80th birthday bash.

Straight-laced officials refuse to shed any light on what occurred on the Buckingham Palace balcony.

Was it a joke ... or an altogether more embarrassing human moment?

Princess Anne was near collapse and Prince Charles only just about managed to keep a straight face.

But the finger of suspicion pointed at the Duke of Edinburgh.

His chest bedecked in medals, he had the smirk of a soldier who had just completed a successful rearguard action and was battling to stop exploding further ... with laughter.

And the Queen had the weary look of a woman all too familiar with the situation. With the Duke by her side, Her Majesty simply wrinkled her nose and closed her eyes as if she was hoping the whole situation would go away.

But it was Prince Harry - significantly standing right behind Prince Philip - who really gave the game away.

Splendid in his Blues and Royals uniform, he just couldn't control his giggles as a Second World War memorial flight roared overhead.

At one stage Harry ducked and hid his face behind his hands to stem the guffaws.

Yesterday, one Royal aide was refusing to divulge whether the Duke had had beans for breakfast.

He said: "No one knows what it was all about. It's not really the sort of thing one can go up and ask Her Majesty or the Prince, is it ?"

But even if Prince Philip was responsible, where's the problem?

In the Middle Ages, loudly breaking wind was something to be proud of, an act of appreciation to the housewife after a good meal.

In the 19th century, Joseph Pujol - known as Le Petomane, "the great farter" - was famed for impressions of a dressmaker "ripping cloth" and a cannon firing.

Martin Luther, the famous German monk, is quoted as saying: "Why don't you belch and fart, did you not enjoy the meal?"

But the practice has always caused acute embarrassment if indulged in at the wrong time.

The 1001 Arabian Nights Tales - in a story entitled The Historic Fart - tells of a man who flees his country because of the sheer shame of farting at his own wedding.

So the Duke shouldn't worry - at least his trumpet involuntary shows the Royals are human too.
