SEARCH FEATURES - A Clarification

On several other threads, there seems to be widespread confusion resulting from the use of the phrase "returning Search to its original state". Let me try to clear things up a bit...

"Original State" = A search like we had at Forumer - a full fledged search with all fields, including Keyword, functional.

From the time we set up shop on this domain, we have had a "partial" search only - Author worked, the rest didn't. As it has been explained to me by FSNAdmin, the keyword search was disabled in order to boost performance. The idea was to at some point add an on-site Google Box to take the place of the disabled Keyword search. A great idea, but...

Saturday FSNAdmin and I collaboratively set up and activated the Google box. It didn't take very long to find out that by doing so we broke the Author search in the process and that Author search and Google Box were not going to readily co-exist. So...

On the Saturday overnight, FSNAdmin activated the previously disabled portions (i.e. Keyword) of the "standard" search system. Because posts are added to the search index *at the time they are posted*, none of our posts from Day 1 until now were indexed for keyword searches. That problem was remedied by running a brutally CPU-intesive "re-indexing" utility - hence the need for some downtime.

Re-indexing shutdowns will probably never be needed again, since from here on the posts will be indexed as they are posted.

There will be a perceptable slowdown at peak posting times because the "realtime" indexing will now be eating up CPU cycles every time somebody posts a post. It probably will not be much of a slowdown, but I'm just sayin' you may see a little lag at peak times of day.

To restate the main point of this post: Search now works just like it did in the old days at Forumer - Author, Keyword, and all the various filtering buttons and boxes. It is likely to affect site performance slightly at peak times.

Thank you FSNAdmin and RatPatrol. Quite a project for a Saturday night.

I haven't tested the keyword search function yet, but I know it's a welcome addition for many of us who used and loved it on other forums.

I take it this is the reason why , since Sat., that it takes me 2 to 3 mins. to get a page upto read? I finally gave up Sat. lol Of course I am on dial up.

As I do not know what a "search" thing is for or never used it, I will say thnks for what the other posters wanted so much.

Have a safe one and enjoy !.

Actually, no.

Any performance impact would not have shown up until the site came back online at about 06:15 Central. I've been reading and posting continuously since then and haven't actually noticed any change at all in page loading.

Something else must be wrong somewhere... possibly with your service provider's equipment.

Search feature is here: http://www.refugeesunleashed.net/search.php and it can come in mighty handy at times. Check it out!

Wow that's awful.

I'm on cable, but I can have probs with people who use TinyPic for hosting their avatars. The pic will EXPLODE in a HUGE size on the page and/or load painfully slowly until it gets to the proper size - and I always think about the dial up users when that happens to me. It must be a nightmare for them.

I wonder if something can be done for dial up users?

All that I click on. Plus whenever I go to a new page of the thread. Some take longer than others. It is mostly just a blank page and then suddenly it pops u. lol

Yes it is painfully slow on dial up with the tiny pics and etc. As you said, sometimes the pic will explode before it goes to normal size. can be quite a shock sometimes. lol

Take care and be safe.

Tinypic is easily dealt with. I've had it blocked for several months now and my Refugees pages don't hang nearly as frequently as they used to. Seems that Tinypic goes down quite often and when it's down any page with an avatar or picture that's stored on Tinypic will hang for a minute or so.

I know exactly how to block it with Mozilla 1.7 and FireFox. I can probably figure it out for Internet Exploder if I need to. Maybe I will write something up some day, but for now, PM me for instructions if you need to.

Basic idea is to go into your browser's image management settings and add tinypic.com to the "block" or "disallow" list.

The downside of this tactic is that occasionally there's a case related picture posted that's hosted at Tinypic, and it gets blocked too.

It's erratic for me. lol

Lisas aviator (TinyPic) got hung up but I refreshed again and now it's ok. It's the TinyPic URLs that can mess me up. It's weird! And like I said, I'm on cable.

11:25 Central - I've been on the site since it came back up and I still have not experienced any slowdowns or hanging.

It's working great for me RatP

I've done some keyword searches, and they were FAST.

All else is unchanged for me. No hanging, no slowdowns, no problems Laughing

A lot of the slowdowns could be routing problems between certain ISPs and this server. I'm going to talk with joy and vc about the remote avatars, as I've gotten page hangs from those as well. Might see if there's an easy way to work around those if we can.

NO! Don't remove it! It can be resized or something. It's just something I noticed about TinyPic Url and I thought That could be CC's prob because that site can be slow or down a lot.

Lets see what fsnadmin comes up with..

My 2 cents worth...

I have yet to see Photobucket hand the pages. Seems to work fine.

Peeves:

1) Tinypic - causes pages to hang very frequently. Yes, it's tinypic's issue, not my PC or browser. I've spent time looking into it and the clincher is that if I block tinypic.com the hanging clears right up.

2) The phpBB mod that allows oversized avatars to slip in and then resizes them to standard when the page renders. Whether hosted locally or on a tinypic|photobucket service, avatars could be scaled to standard size so that when pages render we don't get the HUGE avatar for a moment, followed by a quick "reshuffling" of the page as the avatar resizes. It's not that hard to size an avatar properly and if somebody really can't figure it out there are quite a few of us here that can assist.

Perhaps a good solution is to have all avatars hosted locally on site and turn off the off-site avatars thing completely? Just thinking out loud there...
