Favorite Holiday Meals. (or worst lol)
When we would all e together as a family, we had a special xmas eve dinner that was grilled shrimp as a first course and Lasagna for the main meal. We knew we would be eating turkey and stuffing ourselves the next day so we enjoyed a non meat dish in the evening.

I remember the tree stories, those are the most funny to me.
We had a cat that used to climb the tree. When he wanted out, he would just leap through the braches, and usually took the tree with him.
One aunt used to secure her tree to the wall and staircase with black thread. Her cat still climbed up, but didn't take the tree down. It was never straight, no matter how many lines she used to secure it.
One uncle in the family got a brilliant idea. He just covered the tree in plastic, tied it up with rope and hung sideways from the basement ceiling. No more putting the tree up and taking it down each year. His wife was horrified. He just left the lights & everything on.
I like the old light strings, with the big bulbs. Those are my favorite.
ETA: I got distracted here. One of my favorite things about the tree was the candy on the tree. I remember little candy cherries, chocolates, and candy canes. Our tree had gingerbread houses and people.
The tree & the candy were my favorites.

Nice memories.
My best Christmas dinner was when all my kids still lived at home and cooked the entire meal by themselves. It was very thoughtful and they actually did a good job.
The worst one was when I made a turkey and forgot to take the plastic bag of innards out before I roasted it. That was nasty!

When I was younger and before children (20's I think), I remember one year of celebrating from Thanksgiving through Christmas. It seemed that with work, mom, grandmother, aunts on the other side and church I ate turkey, ham and all of the fixings for over a month. Christmas day I was tired of the rich food and came home and chopped up some potatoes, onions and green peppers and fried them in my mother's old black, iron skillet. I took some blackeyed peas out of the freezer and made some cornbread. I believe that was absolutely the best food I ever had.

My traditional holiday dinner is boring because it is ALWAYS the same.....ham, lima beans, scalloped potatoes, corn and dinner rolls. For some reason, I never get sick of it. We don't make a huge "to-do" over it as much as Thanksgiving. For some odd reason I HAVE to have turkey on Thanksgiving (don't like ham for that holiday), and by the time Christmas rolls around, I MUST have ham that day...I'm sick of turkey by then. Weird, huh?

Homeade tamales and red wine. Every year we make them, it used to be a huge tradition with my family when my grandmother was alive. We would make HUNDREDS and all the relatives would come from all over, and we would all make them together while drinking red wine. Now its just me, mom and my daughter but we still have fun.

Our Thanksgiving and Christmas menu is the same.
Turkey and Dressing (sometimes just two turkey breasts)
Giblet gravy
Sweetpotatoe casserole
Fresh Cranberry congealed salad with a cream cheese topping (this is more like a dessert)
Potatoe Rolls
Ham
Fruit salad
Beans --baby limas or string
Pecan and Pumpkin pies
Coconut pound cake
This Thanksgiving my husband cooked a pot of mustard and a pot of turnip greens from his garden. It took a long time to wash them so he said he isn't doing that again for a big crowd.
The dressing recipe is one my Mother used for many years. I became the cook when my Mother couldn't----she supervised. If the dressing didn't meet Mother's taste she would ask me if I had put such and such in. Of course I hadn't because she had forgotten to tell me about that particular ingredient. So it took several years doing this before I was able to get all the correct amount of ingredients and write it down. Now my daughter does a great job helping me. At least she has the written recipe that I didn't have.
