American Idol

I know a few of us watched Idol last year and posted on that topic. For any who might not know tonight is the AI season premiere. It's on now on the east coast.

VC I know this doesn't belong here but I wanted to put it here to remind everyone.

I enjoy watching AI, but I usually don't really start watching until they get down to the top 20.

Hi Spuds.

I bumped last season's thread but no one posted in the first hour so I ended up logging off and watching. Already have the cable auto tuned to swap over at tonight. I'll look for you there tonight.

GM you miss so much by waiting until they pick the final 20. It was hilarious last night. One girl claiming to be the biggest AI fan tried out. She was horrible and couldn't believe the judges thought so because she had 6 years of training. And one auditioned to Prince's Kiss and couldn't remember the words. Kept singing the same wrong words to herself trying to get the right words.

I can't believe people really think they sound good.

I can't believe that some of these people who show up, actually believe they can sing, let alone win!!!! Confused

What's up with Paula Abdul? Shocked

She's not with it.
She's yawning, closing her eyes, can't sit still for a sec, constantly sipping from her cup. Weird..................

I'm wondering if Jewel is going to replace her, I don't remember in previous years that there was a 4th juror.

There have been numerous celebrity judges on AI. What was cracking me up more than anything last night was Seacrest's remarks. Laughing Laughing Laughing

Yes they've had guest judges on before. Mark McGrath, Alice Cooper and others have been on the show. I hope if they are replacing Paula that they find someone else. Jewel seemed kind of mousy last night.

Did anyone see the wierd Forrest Gumpeque dude that sang "Unchained Melody"? I laughed so hard when he told Ryan "That's all I have to say about that" His whole audition was uncomfortable. Clearly his coworkers think he 's a joke and arelying to him...poor guy makes and ass of himself on national tv.

Seems to me there was alot more staging so far.... I still loved it. I esp loved the white haired lady with red lipstick that brought her mother. She sang Dont Cha by the PussyCat Dolls. Although it too seemed staged it was hilarious!! I wonder why her mother didnt remind her to wear a bra? Ahahaha!! I love the laughter the show brings into my house hold!! Good times. Fox Exec Defends 'Idol' Against Mean Criticisms

PASADENA, Calif. (January 21, 2007) -- The Fox television network chief on Saturday dismissed talk of unusual cruelty by the judges on "American Idol" this year, saying he's heard from people who think the show has been toned down.

"I think it's part of what makes `American Idol' `American Idol,"' Peter Liguori, Fox entertainment president, told television writers.

The talent show returned with a storm this past week, with episodes on Tuesday and Wednesday attracting around 37 million viewers. The episodes featured auditions by the good, the bad and the awful from Minneapolis and Seattle.

Simon Cowell, whose reputation for blunt, nasty put-downs was established at the series' beginning, was in peak form, telling one contestant that his singing was horrendous and he looked like a "bush baby."

Another judge, Randy Jackson, told one contestant his audition was awful and perhaps ruined his business.

"You shouldn't be a vocal teacher," Jackson said. "I wouldn't take vocal lessons from you, I wouldn't tell anybody to take vocal lessons from you."

On ABC's "The View" this past week, Rosie O'Donnell lashed out at the way contestants were treated by "three millionaires, one probably intoxicated."

"If you keep serving people crap and telling them it's a meal, they're eventually going to think it is a meal," O'Donnell said.

Fox's Liguori said the judges know what makes "Idol" and that this is just the continuation of a successful formula.

"Let's face it, the show has been on the air six years, the judges have been critical for six years," he said.

The judges' harsh assessments also were defended by Geffen Records chairman Ron Fair, who is about to take on a Cowell-like role on an upcoming talent show for the CW network, "Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll."

"In order to have a reputation and continue in a healthy manner in this business, you have to tell people `no' all day long," he said. "I'm telling people 'I'm not going to sign you, that song is not a hit' ... And there's no gracious or wonderful way to tell somebody, whose hopes and dreams are on the line: `no."'

'American Idol' and Special Olympics respond to cruelty allegations

By Christopher Rocchio, 01/22/2007

Commended, not condemned.

That's the message the Special Olympics International organization has for critics who feel that American Idol's producers and judges were unfair to Jonathan Jayne, a Special Olympics participant who's sixth season Idol audition aired on last Wednesday's broadcast of the Fox reality show's Seattle audtions.

"American Idol should be commended for providing Jayne with the same opportunity to succeed as any other contestant," Special Olympics International said in a public statement released on Sunday and published in Monday's The Washington Post. "Whether on the stage of American Idol or on the field of competition for Special Olympics, people with intellectual disabilities don't want pity or special treatment. They want to be judged for who they are and appreciated for what they can achieve."

The statement also noted that during Jayne's audition, for which he sang "God Bless America," Idol judge Paula Abdul "commented admiringly about [his] spirit and advised him to 'always believe in yourself.'"

"While polite isn't a word one would normally associate with [Idol judge Simon] Cowell and company, a viewing of the episode in question shows that the judges were in fact gracious and very encouraging to Jayne during his rendition of 'God Bless America,'" Special Olympics International said in the statement.

Responding to the growing controversy in a different way, the British-born Cowell opted to reference America's Bill of Rights.

What do you think about American Idol's sixth season?

Talk about it on Reality TV World's American Idol message boards.
"To suggest that because somebody has done something like [participate in the Special Olympics] they shouldn't be allowed to enter the competition smacks to me of censorship, to be honest with you," Cowell told television critics at this weekend's Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour, The Post reported.

"I don't think that we should be censors on the type of people. And what we're trying to be, I think, on the show, more than anything else, is representative. A lot of the bad singers you are seeing -- trust me -- there are thousands that didn't make it through. And I think if you asked any of those thousands who didn't make it through, every one of them would say, 'I wish I had the chance.'"

In an article published in Monday's USA Today, Cowell said during un-televised meetings before the audition tapings occur, Idol contestants are offered a chance to leave.

"We tell them that they're going to get a hard time if they're not very good," Cowell told USA Today. "No one leaves the room." He added the most emotionally fragile cases "are simply not shown. Most of the people we show, we feel that they can cope with whatever is going to happen."

Idol executive producer Ken Warwick said there has been a disproportionate ratio of bad auditions to good in the sixth season's first two episodes, but added there's nothing that can really be done about it.

"It's not a conscious decision," Warwick told USA Today. "It's just that the further we go in the series, there are less and less good singers, so the numbers are made up by more bad ones."

Warwick said that he thinks everyone has the right to audition, and added that in some instances when there are singers with certain disabilities who just want to meet the judges, the producers will "turn the cameras off and bring them in. We give them a good experience."

Jayne, a 21-year-old from Renton, WA, described his Idol experience as "absolutely wonderful" during a recent interview with The Seattle Times, and added he did it with the hope of eventually becoming a DJ or talk show host. In addition to an appearance on last Thursday's Access Hollywood, Jayne has also since appeared on Friday night's Jimmy Kimmel Live on ABC and Monday morning's broadcast of NBC's Today. Kenneth Briggs, a 23-year-old whom Jayne met in line while waiting to audition for Idol, also accompanied Jayne on the ABC and NBC appearances.

And the LION lady...she's a hoot!! Laughing

•Trista Giese, 22, of Baxter, Minn., who did a Cowardly Lion rendition of If I Were King of the Forest from The Wizard of Oz, says Idol "did not make me look like anybody I wasn't." Her performance, she says, was part of a bet to persuade her sister to audition, and she never expect to survive to the Hollywood round. She says the response has been 98% positive, with just "a couple of hate mails and a handful of people saying, 'What were you thinking?' " And as of Saturday morning, she says, she had 137 new requests for friend status on her MySpace page.

Ashanti made it to Hollywood before and got shot down. Guess she doesn't give up. This time they didn't even put her through.

I could see her on a soap opera. That's definitely her calling. LOL
