Gibson returns to House

By TAMARA McKENZIE, Guardian Political Editor

Managing to evade the local and international press and absent from the Lower Chamber for more than a month following the death of US Celebrity Anna Nicole Smith, and since the publication of suggestive photos of him and the former Playboy Playmate, Golden Gates MP and former Minister of Immigration and Labour Shane Gibson returned to his seat in the House of Assembly on Wednesday. And upon adjournment, he informed The Guardian that he is still "friends" with Ms Smith's companion and lawyer Howard K Stern, saw nothing wrong with leaving repeated voicemail messages on Ms Smith's voicemail, and he still has an overwhelming support from his constituents, and even those affiliated with the Opposition Free National Movement (FNM).

"I'm fine and there is nothing like knowing that you are innocent," said Mr Gibson who was also accused of abusing his ministerial post when he admitted to fast-tracking a permanent residency visa for the US celebrity. He became the first Minister in Prime Minister Perry Christie's Cabinet to leave office under the pressure of a scandal that had rocked the party, divided the country and attracted an international media feeding frenzy not seen in almost two decades. "My family is fine and as a matter of fact, I've gotten excellent support from my family and I'm gonna be all right," Mr Gibson told The Guardian

"I think what I did in terms of resigning, I set a new precedent in The Bahamas where you have Members of Parliament who have gotten mixed up in all sorts of things in the past and never resign," Mr Gibson explained. "You have Members of Parliament who had outside kids while they were married," he continued. "Cameras can take pictures all the time, and so hopefully in the future when cameras take other pictures of other persons and it is not understood, we will see how they react at that time."

Mr Gibson in a televised interview last month revealed that the photos he took with Ms Smith were "innocent" and were actually taken by Ms Smith's companion, Howard K Stern. He added that he "did not remember" receiving any gifts from Ms Smith and "knew nothing" of the claims that circulated in the media of him receiving a Rolex watch from the celebrity who still remains popular after her death.

And when he resigned on Feb 18, Mr Gibson flatly denied that he had had a sexual relationship with Ms Smith and told the public that he was resigning because his wife, his parents and his entire family had suffered enough.

But just when the media thought the dust had settled for Mr Gibson, the TMZ.com website posted several phone messages left on the cell phone of Anna Nicole Smith some two weeks ago, which were reportedly made last December by the former Immigration and Labour Minister. Some calls were made around midnight from New Providence. Mr Gibson told The Guardian yesterday that if he cannot reach someone who he considers to be his friend, the "natural" thing to do is to call again and again if there is something "important" to discuss. " So I don't see the big deal," Mr Gibson said about the repeated calls. "If you have a three hour time difference and you are trying to catch somebody around 8 o'clock, what time would you call?" Mr Gibson asked in response to a question about calling Ms Smith around midnight.

Mr Gibson also admitted that he still kept in contract with the late Ms Smith's companion and lawyer Howard K Stern because he [Mr Stern] is considered to be a "friend." He declined, however, to inform The Guardian of whether or not his mother was still serving as nanny to six-month-old Dannielynn Hope Smith while her paternity case continues to play out in a Bahamian court.

Mr Gibson said that since his resignation, he has been assisting the PLP with its campaign and he has also stepped up efforts in his constituency with the introduction of various new programs. He added that since his resignation, he continues to receive the support of constituents and has "more support now than ever before."

"We have grown even closer over the past couple of weeks and I would say that I have more support now from people who I know to be FNM's," Mr Gibson said. "They [FNMs] came up to me and said 'I don't like what is happening. They see that there was a concerted effort to stray and put a twist to a story that absolutely was not true, and so I am now getting support from persons on the other side, simply because of what happened."

Judge Seidlin's E-Mails Under Scrutiny

Judge Larry Seidlin, who decided where Anna Nicole's body would be buried, is now having his own body of evidence reviewed.

TMZ has learned Chief Judge Dale Ross of the Broward Courts has received a public records request for all e-mails sent to and from Judge Seidlin's office computer during the Anna Nicole Smith hearing.

Although we're not sure, typically these requests come from media organizations. Florida has a "sunshine law" that favors the disclosure of public information. One reason the computer might prove interesting is if the colorful judge was communicating with the media to strike an on-air deal after the hearing was complete, though we do not know that to be the case.

As far as we know, the Chief Judge has not ruled on the request.

Why don't they leave this man alone. I wasn't crazy about how he carried on the hearing in a circus manner, but he seemed to get the job done right or wrong.

Everybody's talked to the media in the case. So what if he did. He still accomplished the goal.

Anna Nicole Autopsy Results Expected

From Associated Press
March 25, 2007 4:15 PM EDT
MIAMI - The murky circumstances surrounding Anna Nicole Smith's death could become clearer Monday, when authorities are expected to release the results of the former pinup's autopsy.

The anticipated disclosure of what killed Smith comes more than six weeks after she was found unresponsive at her hotel suite in Hollywood, Fla.

The autopsy results had been expected weeks ago but have been repeatedly delayed, in part because the Broward County medical examiner, Dr. Joshua Perper, said he received additional evidence from the Seminole Police Department. The department is investigating the starlet's death because the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino where she was staying is located on tribal land.

Authorities would not disclose what the additional evidence was.

Perper's initial autopsy report was released a day after Smith's death, but he said an extensive battery of tests was being performed to search for all manner of causes.

Perper's initial tests found no evidence, either in Smith's stomach or her bloodstream, that she had taken large amounts of prescription medication. The medical examiner said prescription drugs, but no illegal drugs, were found in Smith's hotel room. He would not identify the drugs.

The initial examination did find signs of inflammation in Smith's heart. Perper said it was "something which looks a little bit unusual" but that it may be nothing.

Because Smith's death was so sudden and because her 20-year-old son Daniel died under suspicious circumstances five months earlier, there has been speculation of possible criminal activity. The Seminoles will not comment on their investigation, although they initially said there was no indication Smith was the victim of a crime.

Smith arrived at the Hard Rock on Feb. 5 and planned to leave four days later aboard a new yacht her companion Howard K. Stern was arranging to buy. She was said to be suffering from a stomach flu before she was found dead Feb. 8.

Smith was a former Playboy Playmate of the Year, Guess jeans model and bride of 89-year-old oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II.

Stern and two other men have claimed they are the father of her baby, Dannielynn.

Gibson to Pursue Lawsuits

By Macushla N. Pinder

Former Immigration and Labour Minister Shane Gibson said recently he plans to push ahead with several lawsuits against both local and international media houses after the general election.

Former Minister Shane Gibson

Declining to reveal details of any of the "four to five cases", Minister Gibson said only that the parties would be dealt the "fullest extent of the law."

"I don’t want to give any heads-up as to how we would actually go about this, but there was a lot of libellous information disclosed," he said in an interview with the Bahama Journal.

"…There’s nothing wrong with reporting the truth, but I think there is something definitely wrong with trying to twist the truth. But at the end of the day, the truth will prevail."

Several weeks ago, the former Cabinet Minister retained the services of top notch multi-millionaire US attorney, Willie Gary, to help clear his name in the ongoing controversy involving late American celebrity Anna Nicole Smith.

The Florida based attorney reportedly earned his reputation by representing little-known clients against major corporations.

The Bahama Journal has learnt that Mr. Gary is preparing a lawsuit for Mr. Gibson, who is expected to sue an international media house for what he claims are scandalous and libellous comments.

According to a well-placed source, plans are also underway to sue Callenders & Co attorneys Michael Scott and Tracey Ferguson as well as The Tribune.

Mr. Gibson resigned as Cabinet Minister in the Christie administration last month amid stinging allegations stemming from his involvement with Ms. Smith.

The resignation came nearly a week after the Tribune newspaper published photographs showing the minister and Ms. Smith in warm embraces.

It also followed allegations that the minister had received a Rolex watch from Ms Smith as a thank-you present for the approval of her permanent residency application last year.

But Mr. Gibson has on numerous occasions unequivocally denied that he accepted any gift or favour from any one as reward for the granting or an inducement to grant any permit to Ms. Smith or anyone else.

He added that his continued presence on the frontlines would make it extremely difficult for the government to focus on issues that are of central concern like crime, illegal immigration, education, National Health Insurance, the economy, affordable housing and social welfare.

"I have no regrets about resigning," Mr Gibson told the Bahama Journal.

"I have regrets about how the truth was twisted, but time has a way of dealing with these things."

Mr. Gibson has kept a low profile since tendering his resignation, shifting his focus and energy to his and the governing party’s campaign.

"I feel comfortable in Golden Gates, but of course, you should never take anyone for granted," he said.

"And so every day, I’m putting in three to four hours, hitting the streets, knocking on doors, talking to constituents, meeting with those who have concerns."

When asked if he would accept the position as a cabinet minister if the Progressive Liberal Party were to be re-elected, Mr. Gibson said he wished to take one day at a time.

"I want to try to see if I can win Golden Gates again. I feel comfortable. We did a good job there," he said.

"We were able to initiate our computer lab and marching band. We have a number of programmes going on in the constituency and I just want to concentrate on winning Golden Gates first and make a decision as to where I will go next after this."

The former Cabinet Minister confirmed that he has been approached by an international company for the publication of a book.

"My only concentration right now is trying to help my party continue being the government, trying to assist as many of my colleagues as possible – those who require my assistance and after that time move on," Mr. Gibson said.

ANNA NICOLE SMITH CASE
Autopsy: Mix of nine drugs a fatal accident
Anna Nicole Smith overdosed on a mix of drugs, including the same sleeping drug that killed Marilyn Monroe.
BY NIKKI WALLER
nwaller@MiamiHerald.com

Anna Nicole Smith's autopsy results, released Monday, reveal as much about the star's reckless life as they do about her sudden death of an accidental overdose at age 39.

The autopsy report paints a complex, yet human picture of Smith: a mother battling depression after losing her son; a woman struggling to quell chronic pain from several plastic surgeries; and a star so obsessed with preserving her beauty that she gobbled diet pills, drank SlimFast and injected her buttocks with anti-aging drugs.

Yet Smith was a woman in control, even in the final days of her life, days that she spent in a suite at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino fighting a 105-degree fever, flu symptoms, sweating and a painful infection caused by a ruptured abscess in her buttocks.

Three days before her Feb. 8 death, her temperature soaring, Smith took an ice bath and Tamiflu, but firmly refused to go to the emergency room.

Smith improved the next day, but Broward Medical Examiner Dr. Joshua Perper said Monday that a trip to the ER could have prevented her fatal overdose, caused by at least nine prescription drugs. The combination of drugs slowed down her brain and caused respiratory arrest.

Instead, Perper said, Smith holed up in her hotel room, surrounded by cold and flu medications, soda cans, nicotine gum and room service. There, she took a lethal dose of chloral hydrate, a rarely-prescribed sleeping medication that she often gulped straight from the bottle
.

The same drug contributed to the death of her idol, Marilyn Monroe. Smith told friends she wanted to die like Monroe -- whose visage she had tattooed on her right calf.

Lawyers for Smith's estranged mother, Virgie Arthur, have not yet seen the investigation documents, but say they may consider filing a civil suit against Smith's longtime partner, Howard K. Stern, or her doctors.

At a press conference Monday, attorneys for Stern said the autopsy findings brought him ''no relief or peace,'' but lawyers have no plans to pursue other action.

Arthur and others have cast Stern as a schemer who engineered Smith's death and the death of her son Daniel, but Seminole police said there is no evidence of wrongdoing.

''The case is closed,'' said Lilly Ann Sanchez, one of Stern's Miami attorneys.

Daniel's death is the subject of an inquest set to begin in the Bahamas today; authorities say his cause of death remains unresolved. A forensic pathologist hired by Smith determined that Daniel died from a heart condition caused by an overdose of methadone, Zoloft and Lexapro.

Forensic experts say doctors who prescribed medications for Smith under her own name and under various aliases are unlikely to face criminal charges because there is no evidence to suggest she took medications against her will.'

Smith's relatives could file negligence suits against her doctors only if records show the physicians insufficiently monitored her or knowingly over-prescribed her drugs.

Smith's doctors could also face professional sanctions. One of her doctors, Sandeep Kapoor, is under investigation by the Medical Board of California, though officials won't say whether the probe is related to Smith.

Smith's psychiatrist and personal physician, Khristine Eroshevich, prescribed her chloral hydrate as a sleeping aid about five days after Smith's son died in the Bahamas, said Sanchez.

Doctors rarely prescribe chloral hydrate nowadays because of overdose risks, but Smith's friends and doctors told Perper that modern drugs such as Ambien and Lunesta did not work for her.

Perper's initial autopsy on Feb. 9 isolated no clear cause; bacterial and microbial tests also came back inconclusive. Crime scene investigators who surveyed Smith's hotel room found no illegal drugs, and none were found in her.

Autopsy results show Smith consumed enough chloral hydrate to harm herself. The dose proved fatal in combination with other drugs she took regularly, such as anti-anxiety and weight loss medications.

Perper's report says the reality TV star and diet pill pitchwoman frequently self-medicated and had developed a high tolerance to the drugs she took. But this particular combination of drugs may have overwhelmed Smith's system, said H. Chip Walls, a forensic toxicologist at the University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine.

''Does Elvis Presley ring a bell? This is the exact scenario,'' Walls said. ``He had ten to twelve drugs on board, but when all of them mix together, you ask `how did he not die of all of these drugs?'''

Perper consulted Smith's friends and reviewed information stored on her personal computers to determine the manner of her death -- suicide, homicide, or accident.

After the death of her son Daniel last fall, friends and loved ones said Smith was suicidal, nearly drowning in another accidental overdose.

But her outlook brightened as 2006 came to a close, said Perper.

Smith reportedly wanted to marry Stern on Feb. 28, was planning a trip to Dubai and talked of having another child -- signs that point away from suicide, Perper said.

Documents also show that investigators found no physical evidence that anyone force-fed Smith drugs.

''The evidence for accident is more convincing than all other options [including suicide or homicide],'' wrote Perper in his findings.

Two Anna Nicole Judges Trade Places
Posted Mar 28th 2007 11:12AM by TMZ Staff
Filed under: Celebrity Justice, Anna Nicole Smith

The two Florida judges who decided Anna issues, including DNA testing and burial, have been given the ol' switcheroo.

Judge Larry Seidlin and Judge Larry Korda have both been reassigned. Judge Seidlin, who served as a probate judge, will move to the family law division. Judge Korda, who was in the family law division, will move to the probate court.

Did they get the boot? The Chief Judge of the Broward court sent an e-mail to all the judges, thanking Seidlin and Korda for "volunteering" to make the switch "during these difficult times."

Korda may be well-suited to handle the affairs of the dead. It's a mellow kind of assignment -- perfect for the judge who was busted earlier this month after allegedly smoking a doobie at a public park at two in the afternoon.

Hijacking Shane Gibson
The sleazy press in the United States must have nothing else to do. After having unfairly hounded Shane Gibson, the PLP MP and former Minister from office, because of a friendship with Anna Nicole Smith, the press in the states can’t seem to let the issue go. Now during the past week they got copies of the voice mail of Anna Nicole Smith and it shows that Shane Gibson had called Ms. Smith and left voice mail messages. The messages were simply stuff like “Shane called”, “Please Call Shane”. They put two and two together to make five. They claim that this means that there was a sexual relationship between Shane and Ms. Smith. What a load of nonsense. Ms. Smith came to The Bahamas pregnant. When she met Mr. Gibson, she was pregnant and near to term. Shortly after obtaining permanent residence in The Bahamas she had a child in The Bahamas by caesarian section. When the photos were taken in November 2006 that are being used to say there was something untoward, Ms. Smith was recovering from the caesarian, was in bed, at a baby shower and the photos were taken by her boyfriend with his entire family in the room. What gives here? Let it go sleazy US press and you in The Bahamas ought to know better

Howard K. to Hire Pit Bull Lawyer to Nail Naysayers
Posted Apr 4th 2007 3:47PM by TMZ Staff
Filed under: Celebrity Justice, Anna Nicole Smith

TMZ has learned Howard K. Stern has had telephone conferences with Lin Wood -- the lawyer who represented Patsy and John Ramsey -- and will hire him to sue members of the media who have accused Stern of committing homicide and other offenses.

We're told a retainer agreement has not yet been signed, but Stern and Wood have agreed in principle that the uber-aggressive lawyer would file various lawsuits against certain members of the media.

TMZ contacted Ron Rale, Anna Nicole's lawyer, a named executor in her will and Stern's friend, who said, "I will confirm that retention of Lin Wood is an imminent possibility." Rale added, "Certain members of the media might want to think about mitigating damages."

In the Ramsey case, Wood filed numerous defamation claims against media outlets, including Time, Court TV, FOX News and others, for pointing a guilty finger at his clients.

an old article, but relevant i think:

Minister of Immigration, Labour and Training yesterday blasted former Minister Earl Deveaux for his duplicitous remarks concerning the fast processing of Anna Nicole Smith's permanent residency application. Gibson held documents in his hands claiming that residency applications were fast-track under the Free National Movement's Administration. He went on to say that Smith's application, which was granted in two months, was not unprecedented when compared to the FNM's way of granting residency.

"I will show the Bahamian public where Mr. Earl Deveaux, after that statement will be considered the biggest hypocrite ever to walk the soil of The Bahamas," Gibson said. According to Gibson, Deveaux said such an act has never happened since ‘thousands' of applications are still waiting to be processed.

Gibson produced documents that he said prove two applications that were processed; one granted within six weeks and another within forty-two days. He continued by saying that he will also reveal controversy surrounding a present Member of Parliament. According to him this member's close relative was granted permanent residency within five days and the application was sign by Deveaux himself.

"He [the applicant] applied on the 9th of April, 2002, it's important to know that because Earl Deveaux said it was unprecedented, the application was paid for on the 9th of April, I have here, Mr. Speaker, where it is approved with Earl Deveaux signature on the 14th of April," Gibson revealed. He said that even though the application was paid for on the 9th, records show that the interview was held on the 8th of April. "Now you tell me how the interview happened on the 8th if it says it wasn't receipted until the 9th that he paid for the application," Gibson rhetorically asked.

Gibson also brought forth matters concerning the million dollars home that Smith purchased which is now being challenged. He said an inquiry has been commissioned by the Department of Immigration concerning this matter. "The file in question contains a letter from Callender's and Co. acting for Anna Nicole Smith; the letter explained that Ms. Smith has unconditionally purchased a one million dollar home located in Nassau Bahamas," he explained. Gibson also provided information of a notarized copy of a conveyance that transferred ownership of the property in question.
The Department of Immigration is seeking the advice of the Attorney General to have these matters concerning the ownership of Smith's home to be referred to the Council of the Bahamas Bar Association, Gibson informed the Speaker of the House as he closed.

Anna Nicole Smith Photos to Jeopardize Court Battle?

AP / Mark J. Terrill

Anna Nicole Smith's battle for a share of her late husband's fortune is facing more trouble -- thanks to the discovery of an unseen batch of her wedding day photographs.

The busty blonde was 26 when she exchanged nuptials with wheelchair-bound J. Howard Marshall II in 1994 -- just 14 months before the oil tycoon died aged 90, leaving her to battle it out with his son E. Pierce Marshall for her $88.6 million payout.

But now the younger Marshall's claims Smith entered into the marriage for financial gain have started to swirl again, thanks to a set of pictures showing her looking miserable on her wedding day and during her honeymoon in Bali.

The rare photographs were in the home of Smith's aunt and uncle, Elaine and Melvin Tabers, a Texas nurse and a pipe fitter respectively.

Melvin says, "She was out for every cent she could get. I'm sure she cared for him, but it was not love, in my book."

Also recently discovered by Smith's estranged relatives was a Christmas 1992 videotape of Howard Marshall bequeathing specific items to the former Playboy Playmate.

Elaine adds, "(Howard Marshall) wanted (Anna Nicole) to keep the house, the cars, the jewelry and all the other gifts he had bought her. But he never said anything about his fortune.

"After we got to know him, he often said he didn't want the stock touched. He wanted to make sure (Anna Nicole) was taken care of when he was gone, but he was adamant he didn't want to split up his family's inheritance...

"When we played the tape, our jaws dropped. This is Howard talking from beyond the grave, a verbal will that says how he wants his fortune divided. This will probably become the evidence that will deny (Anna Nicole) the millions."

Smith's battle for the $88.6 million initially awarded to her in 2002 is expected to go to court in January, with a decision coming before the court term ends in June.

Anna Nicole Smith wants to make sure no one gets their hands on her assets.

The former Playmate — who for years has been involved in a messy dispute over her late husband’s fortune — is looking to set up a dummy corporation so that the man who says he’s the father of her daughter can’t get any of the money she might inherit.

“Now that a judge has ordered a paternity suit so that Larry Birkhead can determine if he is, indeed the father, Anna’s scared,” says a source. “Anna’s no legal eagle, but the idea of a dummy or shell corporation is something she learned in her fight over [her late husband] J. Howard Marshall’s estate. And, of course her lawyer [Howard K. Stern, the man Smith says is the baby’s father] explained it to her.”

The insider says that Smith is “still waiting for that money from Marshall’s estate to come through, and she shouldn’t hold her breath.”

Even though her biggest nemesis, Marshall’s son, has died, the estate is prepared to fight it, says the source, adding, “She’s looking to protect assets that she doesn’t really have and from what I hear, isn’t likely to get.”

This is exactly the point . All these people fighting for a little heiress OR protecting assets that probably will never exist. I really wonder how all these people are going feel when they have to bring up DL on their own hard earned wages???Can VA do it on SS?
Skipping along my own path.

Sure she could. I'm sorry, but I don't feel it's all about the money with Larry or Virgie. I believe those two would be fighting just as hard if no money was involved.
