Manning out 4-6 weeks after knee surgery

When the Indianapolis Colts take to the field in Terre Haute for training camp July 25, they will do so without star quarterback Peyton Manning.
He underwent surgery for the removal of an inflamed bursa sac on his left knee Monday, the Colts announced in an e-mail, and it’s expected to take four to six weeks for him to make a “full and complete return to action.”
That would be in time for the team’s regular-season opener Sept. 7 against the Chicago Bears at new Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Manning, 32, is entering his 11th NFL season. He threw for 4,040 yards with 31 touchdowns and 14 interceptions last season, as the Colts’ defense of their Super Bowl championship fell short with a loss to the San Diego Chargers in the divisional playoffs.
Manning, an eight-time Pro Bowler, has twice won the NFL’s MVP award, sharing it with Steve McNair in 2003, taking it alone in 2004. He has started 160 consecutive regular-season games, the longest such streak to open a career by a quarterback in NFL history.
Only Brett Favre, with 253, has started more consecutive games, but his streak would end if he doesn’t come out of retirement.
According to Colts president Bill Polian’s statement, Manning’s streak should remain intact because he will return to full strength between Aug.11 and 25. The Colts’ final preseason game will be Aug. 28 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
“Peyton had been receiving conservative treatment for an inflamed bursa sac in consultation with the club’s medical staff since February,” Polian wrote in a statement e-mailed Monday night. “This course of treatment was productive until Peyton experienced increased pain and early signs of infection.”
Polian called the surgery “routine.”
The Colts have three other quarterbacks on their roster: Jim Sorgi, who has been Manning’s backup for four seasons; Josh Betts, who was on the Colts’ practice squad the past two seasons; and rookie Adam Tafralis, a free agent from San Jose State.
