McCanns are no longer suspects
KATE and Gerry McCann’s torment as suspects in their daughter’s disappearance will end on Monday – but with the fresh hell of Portuguese cops scrapping the search for little Madeleine.
The couple will be officially told there is NOTHING to implicate them, The Sun can reveal.
Their status as “arguidos” – or suspects – will formally be lifted. But 14 months after Maddie vanished on holiday their greater nightmare will go on.
Blundering cops will reveal they have NO clue whatsoever to what happened to the youngster. And after a fruitless probe costing millions the case will effectively be CLOSED.
The shock move emerged a day after Portugal’s attorney general Fernando Pinto Monteiro vowed: “The Maddie case will have a solution on Monday.”
Sources close to the police inquiry revealed to The Sun the “solution” is to give up on the investigation.
Lawyers for the McCanns – named suspects ten months ago and dogged by wild official leaks alleging DNA evidence linked them – will be given access to the case files. A source at the attorney general’s office told The Sun: “It is incredible. There have been absolutely no breakthroughs.”
Madeleine was three when she is feared to have been snatched from her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz. But an agonising 441 days on, doctors Kate and Gerry, both 40 from Rothley, Leics, face the horror of learning the investigation is back to square one
Expat Robert Murat, 34, last night remained a suspect, but wants his arguido status lifted shortly.
The McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: “All Kate and Gerry want is to be allowed to keep looking for their daughter and this weight of guilt by association removed from their shoulders.”

Portugal puts case of missing British girl on hold
Jul 21, 11:40 AM (ET)
LISBON, Portugal (AP) - Portugal's attorney-general has told police to halt their investigation into the disappearance of British girl Madeleine McCann for lack of evidence.
The case will remain on hold unless new evidence emerges.
Attorney-General Fernando Pinto Monteiro's office said Monday the 14-month investigation uncovered no evidence of a crime by the three people named as suspects: Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry and local man Robert Murat.
The girl went missing in May 2007, a few days before her fourth birthday, during a family vacation in Portugal's southern Algarve region.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.
LISBON, Portugal (AP) - Portugal's attorney-general is due to announce Monday whether he plans to bring charges in the 2007 disappearance of British child Madeleine McCann.
Attorney-General Fernando Pinto Monteiro could also order the investigation to be put on hold until new evidence emerges, or ask police to pursue other lines of inquiry into the girl's May 2007 disappearance.
Prosecutors have been reviewing the final police report into what happened to the girl, who disappeared during a family vacation in Portugal's southern Algarve region a few days before her fourth birthday.
Detectives have named the girl's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, and local man Robert Murat as formal suspects in the case. All have denied involvement in her disappearance. If the investigation is halted, suspects are automatically cleared.
Pinto Monteiro said last week he intended to issue a statement giving his decision, but he declined to provide any details.

IMO - somebody knew those children were in that chalet alone. It is not likely, although possible, that a stranger would break in to a resort room knowing or thinking adults are there.
What a horrible price to pay for the decision to leave your small children alone and have this happen. It is a wake up call for all parents to always place the well being and security of your children above your own priorites.
What a heartbreaker.

New Book! Madeleine McCann
by Greta Van Susteren
The former Portuguese chief investigator leading the search for missing British toddler Madeleine McCann has reportedly written an “explosive” new book about the inquiry into her disappearance.
According to the U.K.’s Observer Newspaper, Goncalo Amaral plans to launch his book, True Lies, on Thursday, just days after the case is expected to officially close.
Earlier this month police completed their final report into the disappearance of McCann. Prosecutors on Monday are expected to wrap up a 14-month investigation and drop the child’s parents — Kate and Gerry — of their ’suspect’ status, the paper wrote.
In the book Amaral, who believes the child is dead, criticizes the role of the British police in the investigation and suggests that they were influenced by the leads that the parents wanted pursued, the Observer said.
Under Portuguese law, case documents will be available to the public three weeks after the case is closed.

I've always thought that. Except Maddie never asked to go on this vacation or do anything while there to put herself in harms way. That was the adults responsibility I don't know if the parents harmed her or not, but they definitely neglected her and the twins
