Trial to start in suit by wrongly convicted men
BOSTON _ A federal judge weighs the question this week of how much the government owes a wrongly imprisoned man.
A trial begins tomorrow (Thursday) in a suit filed by four men framed for murder by a known hitman.
The lawsuit alleges the F-B-I failed to disclose critical evidence to prosecutors who ended up winning convictions against the men.
Hitman Joseph "The Animal" Barboza admitted his role in the killing as part of a plea deal. But he also implicated the four, even though the F-B-I had evidence their informant Vincent Flemmi had helped Barboza.
Peter Limone and Joe Salvati each spent more than 30 years in prison for the murder. Louis Greco and Henry Tameleo both died behind bars before being exonerated.
Federal prosecutors say the government can't be held responsible for a case investigated by the state and prosecuted in state court.
