Heath's Death Could Be Natural Causes
Posted Jan 26th 2008 6:53PM by TMZ Staff
It sounds strange, but sources intimately connected with the Heath Ledger investigation tell TMZ it's possible the actor died of natural causes.
The reason they think that -- it's now appearing that the level of toxicity (from medication) in Ledger's system was low enough that it may not have caused his death. These sources say Heath's heart stopped. It could have been a heart attack but it's not certain, at least not yet. Although it's bizarre that a 28-year-old could die of natural causes, it happens.
We've also learned authorities do not believe the housekeeper heard Ledger snoring when she walked in his bedroom at around 1:00 PM. Sources tell us, a fireman observed rigor mortis in Ledger's jaw shortly after arriving on scene at around 3:30 PM. Sources say they now believe Ledger was dead for around three hours prior to their arrival, so they don't believe the masseuse could have heard snoring.
Authorities are also annoyed at news reports that there may have been a sinister plot to remove illegal drugs from Ledger's apartment before cops and firemen arrived. There are reports out there that the masseuse called Mary-Kate Olsen and a plot was hatched to have her bodyguard remove certain drugs. Authorities tell us that's impossible, because the cops were there the entire time the bodyguard was present and there would have been no opportunity to carry out such a plan. They say it's a made up story.
As we first reported, the masseuse contacted the bodyguard because she knew he was a licensed EMT

Heath Ledger's final days as scruffy loner
FAR away from the idolised lifestyle of a Hollywood star, tragic Australian actor Heath Ledger lived out his final days as a scruffy loner.
Drifting between acting gigs and fleeting visits from his beloved daughter Matilda, Ledger would wonder the Manhattan cobblestone streets alone, usually wearing ragged jeans, an old jacket and an unshaven chin.
When he returned to the SoHo apartment he rented for $26, 000 a month, a forlorn sight greeted him.
Apart from a few ornamental skateboards, the flat was more or less unfurnished.
Ledger slept on a mattress on the floor, sleeping pills beside his makeshift bed.
Heath latest: News, blogs, videos, galleries and more in our special Heath tribute section.
"I didn't know he was an actor," said Camile Angelo, the host at the Grotta Azzurra Ristorante, where Ledger often ate breakfast. "He was always the first customer. He was always here alone."
Ledger moved to a SoHo loft from Brooklyn last year after splitting with girlfriend Michelle Williams.
On the rebound, a heartbroken Heath quickly became linked to a slew of starlets and models, including Mary-Kate Olsen.
But when Angelo saw the Brokeback Mountain star last Thursday, he had only his cell phone and iPod for company.
"I told him to stop text messaging because his steak and eggs were getting cold," Angelo said in an interview with New York Daily News. "He smiled."
Liz Bullis, sales manager of Gourmet Garage, said she sometimes saw Ledger with his 2-year-old daughter, Matilda.
"He's usually very scruffy," Bullis said.
The Miro Cafe on Broadway was another Ledger haunt. Once again, the unfailingly polite young man gave no inkling he was somebody special.
"We were surprised, we never knew he was an actor," manager Max Barrsi said. "He was practically here all the time for coffee . . . always very nice with us."
Lonely ... Heath Ledger spent his last days alive in solitude.

Heath's final homecoming
Lucy Carne and Stefanie Balogh
January 27, 2008 12:00am
GRIEF-stricken family and friends of Heath Ledger vowed to give his two-year-old daughter Matilda the "beautiful life" he had planned for her, as the body of the 28-year-old Australian actor last night began a sad final journey to his home in Perth.
Tears flowed as his parents, Kim and Sally, and his older sister, Kate, arrived in Los Angeles yesterday to await the arrival of the casket carrying his body.
Ledger's body was dressed in a black suit before being placed in a simple wooden box for transport from New York, where he lived, back home to Australia via LA.
Actor Abbie Cornish, who starred opposite Ledger in the movie Candy and remained a close friend, accompanied the family to the US for the grim task of bringing the body home after he was found dead in his Manhattan apartment from a suspected drug overdose on Wednesday.
The funeral is expected to be held in Perth this week, but details have not been released. There also was speculation yesterday of a public memorial service in LA within the next few days, likely to be attended by many of Ledger's Hollywood A-list friends.
As Ledger's body was being placed in a hearse outside the funeral parlour on New York's East Side, his gorgeous daughter was less than 10km away in Brooklyn.
Toddler Matilda, who's tender age has protected her from fully understanding that she has lost her father, was being shielded by her actor mother Michelle Williams, who was engaged to Ledger until the relationship ended six months ago.
Matilda and Michelle were "the two true loves" of Ledger's life, friends said last night.
"He adored Matilda, and when Michelle called it quits, he missed Matilda so much that he was thrown into a deep, dark depression," a source said.
Heath was living in New York to be close to his daughter. He wanted to give her a beautiful life, a family friend said.
Ledger was determined to be a good father to Matilda, the friend said, and was regularly seen walking with her on the streets of SoHo, the trendy neighbourhood where he lived.
He regularly showered her with toys and gifts from chic stores in the area and dressed her in bright designer outfits.
It is not known if Ledger left a will, but family sources say he had set up a trust for Matilda. His estate is estimated by Hollywood insiders to be worth more than $A30 million thanks to his successful 12-year, 15-film career.
He also is thought to have invested wisely in property in Australia and overseas and had a financial interests in several businesses, including an LA-based record label.
After getting a reported $A113,000 for teen flick 10 Things I Hate About You, Ledger is understood to have received an eight-figure sum for his last completed role as The Joker in new Batman blockbuster The Dark Knight.
In addition to his Manhattan loft and the Brooklyn house where Michelle and Matilda live, Ledger owned a prestige home in the Hollywood Hills that he bought from television host Ellen Degeneres and her Australian actor partner Portia De Rossi in 2006 for $A2.6 million.
The house was deserted yesterday though several fans stopped by to add flowers to a makeshift shrine at the gates.
It is not known if Michelle and Matilda will travel to Perth for the funeral, but Ledger's heartbroken family has pledged unwavering support for the little girl wherever she grows up.
"Your true legacy lives on in beautiful little Matilda, who will always remain in the greatest of care," the Ledger family wrote in a death notice.
As Matilda grows up, she also will have the comfort and support of a loyal and protective circle of Hollywood friends.
Her godfather, Jake Gyllenhaal, who starred alongside Ledger in the award-winning movie Brokeback Mountain, has vowed to help her keep her father's memory alive.
He said it was "an amazing honour" to be her godfather.
It is believed Gyllenhaal has told friends he has a "duty" to Ledger now to do all he can to help the two-year-old.
Williams' former Dawsons Creek co-star, Busy Phillips, is Matilda's godmother and was one of the first people to meet Williams when she rushed from Sweden to New York after learning of Ledger's death.
Meanwhile, Australia's Foreign Minister, Stephen Smith – who is in New York for meetings at the United Nations headquarters – said he was satisfied about the handling of the inquiry into Ledger's death by US authorities.
The authorities said they would not make a final determination on the cause opf Ledger's death until toxicology tests are completed.

Heath Ledger's death may have been natural
Sources claim that the level of drugs in Heath Ledger's system was too low to cause his death
By Catherine Elsworth in Los Angeles and Martina Smit
Last Updated: 10:54am GMT 28/01/2008
Heath Ledger may have died from natural causes, not a drug overdose, because the amount of drugs in his system was too low to have killed him, it has been reported.

TMZ, the celebrity website that broke the news of the actor's death last Tuesday, quoted sources "intimately connected with the investigation" saying that the 28-year-old may have died from a heart attack.
"It's now appearing that the level of toxicity (from medication) in Ledger's system was low enough that it may not have caused his death. These sources say Heath's heart stopped," the website reported.
Initial tests on the body of the star of Brokeback Mountain proved inconclusive, but Ledger's family has insisted that he would not have taken his own life.
In an article published yesterday, Sarah Lyall, who conducted the last interview with the actor in November, said Ledger "did not seem depressed, or suicidal or whacked out from drugs" when they met.
"What he seemed was exhausted," Lyall told the Observer. "It looked to me like the sort of fatigue you get not from being tired of life, but from being too full of it - too full of plans, too full of self-analysis, too full of noisy thoughts that won't stay quiet."
The actress Naomi Watts, Ledger's former girlfriend, was reported to have visited the Los Angeles mortuary where his body was being kept. She was also said to have joined Ledger's family and friends in a private memorial ceremony.
His body was expected to be flown to Australia today, where it was thought that a funeral would be held in Perth, his home city.
On Saturday evening a moving tribute by Ledger's father, Kim, in which he remembered his son riding a skateboard through the streets of New York, was read out during an Australian ball at the city's Waldorf Astoria hotel.
"Heath did not become an actor for the fame or fortune," Mr Ledger wrote of his son.
"He loved his craft and he loved helping his friends. He loved chess and skateboarding too. My image of Heath in New York is him with his skateboard, a canvas bag and his beanie. "
"That was Heath to me."
An iconic photo of Ledger, smiling and leaning back in a cowboy hat in Brokeback Mountain, was projected onto a screen as Australia's consul-general to the US, John Olsen, read out the tribute.
"Heath is, and always will be, an Australian," wrote Mr Ledger, who flew to America to escort his son's body back to Perth. "He adored his home. His last two weeks with us over Christmas in Perth were just bliss."
Earlier Daniel Day-Lewis, the British actor, interrupted Oprah Winfrey on her celebrity talk show to pay tribute to Ledger.
Fighting back tears, the 50-year-old Oscar hopeful said he had "marvelled" at Ledger's work. At the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, Robert Redford, the veteran actor, talked about the impact of Ledger's death, comparing it to the shock caused by the 1981 assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan.
"That's too young to check out. It was a shock," Redford said.
He described Ledger as "one of those actors who was very, very special because he played so many different kinds of roles".
Last night Day-Lewis also dedicated his Screen Actors Guild Award for his performance in "There Will Be Blood" to Ledger.
"In Brokeback Mountain he was unique, he was perfect," Day-Lewis said. "That scene in the trailer at the end of the film is as moving as anything I think I've ever seen."
Backstage, Day-Lewis said he never met Ledger but the actor's death was all he had been thinking about recently.
"I thought he was beautiful. I just had a very strong feeling I would have liked him very much as a man," he said. "I admired him very much. I'm absolutely certain he would have done many wonderful things in his life."

I don't think Heath's death is from natural causes. If something had been wrong with his heart or brain it would have shown up in the autopsy. It has to be some sort of drug interaction that went horribly wrong. Maybe all the drugs he was taking suppressed his breathing too much, with him having pneumonia.
I just can't understand why that woman would call Mary Kate Olsen first when she was in California and Heath was in New York. I know the woman knew both of them and knew they were close, but when you find a person lying on the bed, and unresponsive, you call 911 first, not make 4 phone calls to someone across the country. I do give credit to MKO for calling her bodyguard and telling him to go check on Heath.

It was rumored MKO and he were dating but not very publicly. If that is the case the lady probably called her before any media got wind of it. MKO sent 3 bodyguards there that arrived around the same time as police and the ambulance workers did and helped keep the media and ppl at bay while they worked on Heath and removed his body. According to TMZ their "sources" (prob EMT workers or police) say when they came into the room heath was already in rigomortis and had probably been dead atleast 3 hours. The chick who called MKO probably walked in and touched him and knew he was dead. Apparently his mouth was fixed open. Gross I know but given whats come out it might explain why she called her and got additional body guards there since the pap did arrive shortly after. Im sure the paps have police scanners.

After seeing so much about this in the news over the past days/week or so, I do remember him in Brokeback Mtn very well. I just didn't know his name. Also I saw the Patriot, but not any of his other movies I don't think.
The acting in Brokeback Mtn was outstanding.
He was so talented and will be sorely missed.

There is a picture of him in People Magazine and he just doesn't look good. I didn't buy the mag, so no pic here, but I am sure you will see it in the grocery line. He looks very thin and pale.

Should Hollywood clean up Heath's legacy?
Is Hollywood whitewashing Heath Ledger's biography?
"Entertainment Tonight/The Insider" paid a hefty chunk of cash for a video that reportedly shows Ledger doing drugs at the Chateau Marmont in January 2007. In a clip that has been widely teased, Ledger is seen talking about smoking five joints a day for 20 years
But after an e-mail from the actor's publicity firm, ID PR, was circulated throughout Hollywood, both shows decided not to air the video.
My inside sources say the decision was less about taste and more about a threatened lawsuit.
"Out of respect for Heath Ledger's family, Entertainment Tonight and The Insider have decided not to run the Heath Ledger video which has been circulating in the world media,"' said a statement on the show's website.
But is this a good precedent to set for so-called entertainment news shows?
I'm a huge fan of Heath Ledger. I first talked to the then-unknown young Australian actor for USA Today about his role in Mel Gibson's "The Patriot." And I was fortunate enough to speak with him often during "Brokeback Mountain's" sweep of the 2006 awards season.
I found him to be gentle, sensitive, sweet-natured, incredibly talented. He also seemed incredibly vulnerable, a lot like Johnny Depp.
That said, I'm also a fan of the media serving the public with information that might help prevent unnecessary tragedy. If the public knew that Ledger was struggling with addiction, is it possible that resulting media scrutiny could have forced Ledger's loved ones to get him the care he needed?
Dr. Drew Pinsky had viewed the tape and was interviewed to offer perspective.
"I have treated many celebrities and many of them have been functioning at a very high level using a lot of substances. The reality is that when a 28-year-old seemingly healthy man, whom we love and respect, dies suddenly, there is a reason. His death plays upon our deepest fears. We owe it to the public to try to answer the question why. I am convinced that if this heart-wrenching video had aired, it would have gotten through and had a positive effect on young people in America. Perhaps it could have even saved lives," Pinsky told "Entertainment Tonight."
I watched a very under-the-influence Brad Renfro make quite a scene at a swanky Hollywood party several years ago. Not only did none of his celebrity friends, or the publicists throwing the bash, find his stumbling, slurring, falling down and bleeding nose unusual, but not one reporter covering the party reported it. I tried to. But it was edited out of my then-newspaper's party item.
Hollywood publicists, managers and agents can often be the worst enablers. They are the spin-meisters, part of the protective circle that surrounds stars and tries to keep any bad behavior -- drugs, spousal abuse, drinking -- out of the news.
Why? Because that is what they're paid to do. Make no mistake, they make money off celebrities just like the paparazzi.
The big problem I have with Hollywood's time-honored "Cone of Celebrity Silence" is this: When drug use or addiction goes unreported, unspoken and unnoticed, the addict continues to use drugs without the consequences needed to help them hit bottom and seek help. And very often, these people die.
And when the truth about a celebrity's drug use isn't reported, that person's millions of fans never know how dangerous drug use -- often perceived as glamorous and cool -- really is.
So I don't think showing a video of Heath, reportedly showing him doing drugs and talking about his use, would be doing Ledger's memory a disservice.
Perhaps it's a little too soon and feels a little too sensational. But as the days go by, if I were his parents, or his girlfriend and mother of his child, I would want his fans to know how evil, deadly and dangerous drugs can be.
Revealing possible drug use doesn't take away from his talent or his legacy. It spreads awareness.
So think what you want about "The Insider" teasing the video and attempting to air it. And say what you will about TMZ dogging Britney Spears. Sure, the paps are making money off the videos and photos of Britney. I'm not saying their motives are noble. But consider for a moment that the resulting media attention might have spared Spears from many more months, perhaps years, of confusion, unhappiness, questionable behavior or worse.
Had TMZ not videotaped her high-speed driving antics, her erratic mood swings, her British accent, those kids might still be riding around with her -- and probably not in child-safety seats. And she might not be in UCLA Medical Center right now, with her parents around her, finally getting the medical help she desperately needs.
So if you want to honor Heath's memory, don't censor yourself from reading or viewing new information about the causes of his untimely and unnecessary death. In my opinion, drug abuse is an important public discussion. But please post your comments on this topic if you disagree.
Below you can read the statement released by Heath's former publicity agency IDPR....
Here's the e-mail from the publicists:
Subject: Entertainment Tonight and Heath Ledger - FYI
Tonight Entertainment Tonight/The Insider are previewing an extremely distasteful segment regarding Heath Ledger. The segment centers around a two-year old video ET purchased for a large sum of money in the hopes of stirring up a salacious and exploitive story about Heath, which would win them big ratings on the first day of sweeps. The two outlets did not even have the courtesy to wait until after Heath's burial to broadcast this segment. They intend to air the full segment tomorrow.
For the sake of his grieving family and friends, his child, and common decency, we hope to pressure Entertainment Tonight and The Insider to do the right thing and pull the spot. This is not journalism, it is sensationalism. It is a shameful exploitation of the lowest kind, to a talented and gentle soul, undeserving of such treatment.
We are asking the Hollywood community to pressure Entertainment Tonight to pull the segment. Please take action so that Heath's family can grieve in peace. Please forward this message to everyone you know and ask them to personally call Linda Bell Blue at Entertainment Tonight and Brad Bessey at Paramount to express their outrage and request Entertainment Tonight to pull the distasteful spot. Their information is listed below.
Thank you.

Michelle Williams: My heart is broken over Heath Ledger
By Peta Hellard in Los Angeles
February 02, 2008 12:00am
MICHELLE Williams, Heath Ledger's former lover and mother of his two-year-old daughter Matilda, broke her silience over his death today, revealing her heart is broken.
In her first statement since the death of her former companion Heath Ledger, actress Michelle Williams said she is suffering from a broken heart and asked for privacy for her and daughter Matilda.
"Please respect our need to grieve privately,'' Williams said in a statement released today by Ledger's spokeswoman. "My heart is broken.''
The actor's body has been flown home to Australia where his family is arranging a private funeral and memorial.
Ledger's spokeswoman told Reuters that if a public service is held, the family will share those arrangements. Williams' whereabouts were not disclosed.
Williams, 27, and Ledger met on the set of the 2005 movie "Brokeback Mountain'', fell in love and had Matilda, who is now two years old. They split up in September.pe``
"I am the mother of the most tender-hearted, high-spirited, beautiful little girl who is the spitting image of her father,'' Williams said in her statement.
"All that I can cling to is his presence inside her that reveals itself every day. His family and I watch Matilda as she whispers to trees, hugs animals and takes steps two at a time and we know that he is with us still. She will be brought up with the best memories of him.''
Ledger, 28, and Williams lived together in New York and there was speculation they planned to marry, although they never officially confirmed an engagement.
Ledger was found dead in his bed on January 22 in his New York apartment with sleeping pills and prescription drugs nearby, police said.
The cause of death has yet to be determined but an official with the New York Medical Examiner's office said autopsy results are due next Tuesday or Wednesday at the earliest.

Ledger died of prescription overdose
M.E.'s office: "Manner of death is accident"
"Brokeback Mountain" star, 28, died January 22 in a New York apartment
The 2005 film won Ledger an Oscar nomination for best actor
Colleagues say actor had been suffering respiratory ailment
(CNN) -- Heath Ledger died as the result of an overdose of prescription medication, the New York City medical examiner's office said Tuesday.
"Mr. Heath Ledger died as the result of acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam, and doxylamine," the office said in a short statement.
"We have concluded that the manner of death is accident, resulting from the abuse of prescription medications."
Ledger died January 22 at an apartment in Lower Manhattan. The Oscar-nominated Australian actor, best known for his role as a stoic, closeted cowboy in the 2005 film "Brokeback Mountain," was 28.
An autopsy done on the actor January 23 was inconclusive.
A housekeeper, identified as Teresa Solomon, arrived at the apartment about 12:30 p.m. on the day Ledger died, a police source with knowledge of the investigation said.
She saw Ledger lying on a bed face down with a sheet pulled up around his shoulders and heard him snoring, the source said.
Masseuse Diana Wolozin arrived at the apartment about 2:45 p.m. to give Ledger a massage, according to the police source. About 15 minutes later, when he had not come out of the bedroom and the door remained closed, she went in, saw him lying in bed and set up a massage table.
She shook Ledger, but he did not respond, so she used his cell phone to call actress Mary-Kate Olsen, a friend of Ledger's, in California, the source said.
Wolozin told Olsen that Ledger was unconscious, according to the police source.
Olsen reportedly told her that she would call private security people in New York.
At 3:26 p.m., Wolozin called 911 and told authorities Ledger was not breathing. While on the phone with dispatchers, Wolozin tried to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Ledger, but he was unresponsive.
Emergency personnel arrived seven minutes later, according to the police source, at about the same time as a private security person summoned by Olsen.
The medical technicians performed CPR on Ledger and used a cardiac defibrillator, but their efforts were in vain and he was pronounced dead at 3:36 p.m. By then, two other private security people summoned by Olsen had arrived as well as police.
Ledger's family called his death "very tragic, untimely and accidental." Relatives returned home Tuesday to Perth, Australia, where a private funeral ceremony reportedly will be held, according to The Associated Press. The timing of the funeral is unclear, the AP said.
His former fiancée, actress Michelle Williams, has asked the public to respect the need for her, the couple's 2-year-old daughter, Matilda, and others "to grieve privately."
"My heart is broken," Williams said in a statement issued last week via her publicist. "I am the mother of the most tender-hearted, high-spirited, beautiful little girl who is the spitting image of her father. All that I can cling to is his presence inside her that reveals itself every day. His family and I watch Matilda as she whispers to trees, hugs animals, and takes steps two at a time, and we know that he is with us still. She will be brought up in the best memories of him."
Condolences poured in from Ledger's friends and co-stars.
"He was a wonderful guy, he was a wonderful actor, he had a wonderful future ahead of him, and I liked him," said actor Eric Roberts, who worked with Ledger in "The Dark Knight," the latest installment in the "Batman" series set to open in July.
Colleagues on the Terry Gilliam's film "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," which Ledger had been shooting in England, said the actor apparently had been suffering from a respiratory ailment in the days before he died.
Christopher Plummer told Entertainment Weekly that Ledger had a "terrible, lingering bug in London, and he couldn't sleep at all. We all -- I thought he'd probably got walking pneumonia."
Ledger's first American film was the teen comedy "10 Things I Hate About You" in 1999. He passed up several scripts before taking a role in the Revolutionary War drama "The Patriot" in 2000 and "A Knight's Tale" in 2001. He also played a supporting role in "Monster's Ball."
But Ledger was perhaps best known for his portrayal of Ennis Del Mar in "Brokeback Mountain," Ang Lee's film about two cowboys who had a secret romantic relationship. The role earned Ledger a best actor Oscar nomination.

Ledger's death caused by accidental overdose
(CNN) -- Heath Ledger died from an accidental overdose of prescription medications including painkillers, anti-anxiety drugs and sleeping pills, the New York City medical examiner's office said Wednesday.
Hydrocodone and oxycodone are painkillers. Diazepam is an anti-anxiety drug commonly sold under the brand name Valium; alprazolam is also an anti-anxiety drug sold under such names as Xanax. Temazepam, sold under such names as Restoril and Euhypnos, is a sleeping agent, as is doxylamine.
Ledger died January 22 at an apartment in Lower Manhattan. The Oscar-nominated Australian actor, best known for his role as a stoic, closeted cowboy in the 2005 film "Brokeback Mountain," was 28.
Police reported finding several prescription medications in the room but no illegal drugs.
CNN has learned the Drug Enforcement Administration has requested the toxicology and prescription records related to Ledger's death. The DEA requested the records Wednesday from the New York Police Department and the medical examiner's office after the release of the report detailing the cause of death, according to a law enforcement source who didn't want to be identified by name or agency because the request concerns an active investigation.
The DEA confirmed it will look into anything suspicious concerning Ledger's death. "We will investigate any leads in respect to this," DEA spokesman Garrison Courtney said while declining to provide any specifics. "In any case, we look to see whether prescription drugs were illegally obtained or whether it was through proper channels."
An autopsy done on the actor January 23 was inconclusive.
In a statement released through Ledger's publicist, Ledger's father, Kim, said Wednesday: "While no medications were taken in excess, we learned today the combination of doctor-prescribed drugs proved lethal for our boy. Heath's accidental death serves as a caution to the hidden dangers of combining prescription medication, even at low dosage."
The family added, "Families rarely experience the uplifting, warm and massive outpouring of grief and support as have we, from every corner of the planet. This has deeply and profoundly touched our hearts and lives. We are eternally grateful." Read the full statement
Ledger had talked about his difficulty sleeping after back-to-back roles as a Bob Dylan figure in "I'm Not There" and the Joker in "The Dark Knight," part of the "Batman" series that is due out this summer.
"Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night," Ledger told The New York Times in November. "I couldn't stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going."
In the hours leading up to Ledger's death two weeks ago, a housekeeper, identified as Teresa Solomon, arrived at the apartment about 12:30 p.m., a police source with knowledge of the investigation said.

Michelle on Heath
Michelle Williams is breaking her silence about the untimely death of her beloved Heath Ledger.
The actress is speaking out in the new issue of Interview magazine. This is the first time she's talked publicly about Ledger since releasing a statement on February 1st.
Says Williams, "I think the interesting thing about Heath, which maybe people have only really fully discovered in his death, is how vulnerable he was. You can pick it up on it in his performances, but it’s easy to overlook because he was so physical and beautiful and strong and masculine,” she adds. “But there was always that underlying sensitivity. That’s who he was. He had a talent for everything that he put his mind to. He didn’t know limits."
Michelle also touches on Ledger’s history of sleeping issues.
“For as long as I’d known him, he had bouts with insomnia,” she says. “He had too much energy. His mind was turning, turning turning — always turning.”
Ledger's ex-girlfriend, fellow Australian Naomi Watts, also chats to the mag about the deceased star.
Says Watts, "I think he wanted to be someone who was doing the observing — not the one being observed. He hated not being able to go about his life in an ordinary way. But I think that, deep down, he enjoyed that he was being recognized for his talent. I think he was starting to own that and that's the deepest tragedy, in terms of his work. He was just beginning to own it and embrace it."
Adding some color, she says, "He was a huge, obsessive, chess freak – and very, very good at it."

OLSEN TO HEATH FEDS: LET'S DEAL
DEMANDS IMMUNITY FROM PROBERS

August 4, 2008
Pint-size actress Mary-Kate Olsen has refused to be interviewed by federal investigators probing the accidental drug death of her close friend Heath Ledger unless she receives immunity from prosecution, The Post has learned.
The actress' lawyer has repeatedly rebuffed attempts by the feds to question Olsen, who was the first person called after her masseuse discovered Ledger's body in his SoHo apartment in January.
Frustrated federal officials could obtain a grand-jury subpoena to compel the funky "Full House" actress to tell them whatever she knows about the "Dark Knight" star's behavior, his possible drug use and the events of that fateful morning, according to sources.
Probers have interviewed everyone connected to Ledger and his death, including his doctors, the masseuse, bodyguards, housekeepers, business associates and even the mother of his 2-year-old daughter, Matilda, his "Brokeback Mountain" co-star Michelle Williams.
"Ms. Williams was extremely nice and cooperative," a source said.
Another added, "Everyone has been very eager to help, saying what a great guy Heath Ledger was, everyone except Mary-Kate, who has refused to speak."
That source explained that Olsen would be the final witness they need to conclude their investigation into where he got his drugs and medicines.
Ledger - whose performance as the Joker in "The Dark Knight" has ignited Oscar buzz - died of a potent cocktail of prescription drugs and OxyContin, the latter of which was likely obtained illegally.
His death was ruled an accidental drug overdose by the medical examiner.
And NYPD investigators closed their probe without interviewing Olsen because, they said, they got all the cooperation they needed from others. That decision, however, surprised some observers, considering Olsen's role as a potential witness.
Instead of calling emergency responders after getting the call from her masseuse, Olsen telephoned her bodyguards in the Big Apple, telling them to race to Ledger's Broome Street home, where they arrived just as paramedics got to the scene.
The US Drug Enforcement Administration, which opened an investigation to determine the sources of Ledger's drugs, was not as sanguine as the NYPD about talking to the 4-foot-11, 90-pound Olsen.
The feds contacted her lawyer, Michael Miller, several times recently seeking her cooperation, but Miller has told the feds Olsen won't be interviewed unless she gets immunity, exercising her constitutional rights.
According to sources, all of the drugs in Ledger's body and discovered nearby in prescription bottles were legally obtained from two physicians - with the exception of OxyContin, a powerful painkiller.
Investigators "are trying to ID the source of the OxyContin," a source said. "Did it come from a dealer, from a friend? If he had a bottle from a friend, was it taken by someone else before police responded? That is what is trying to be determined."
The DEA probers were also aggressive with the NYPD, the sources said, and were forced to threaten to obtain a grand-jury subpoena before getting the department's Ledger files.
An NYPD spokesman said the department never balked at handing over the files and did so after receiving a routine federal administrative subpoena.
Asked whether he asked for immunity for his client, Olsen's lawyer said, "We are not going to comment on whether there is a criminal investigation," and declined to speak further.
The sources said Ledger's employees reached out to Olsen because they panicked at finding his body and did not know what to do.
As for the bodyguards, they claimed they responded only to offer help.

Breaking: Mary-Kate's Statement on Heath Ledger's Death
A lawyer for Mary-Kate Olsen has released a statement on her behalf about her late friend Heath Ledger's death.
The statement reads: "Despite tabloid speculation, Mary-Kate Olsen had nothing whatsoever to do with the drugs found in Heath Ledger's home or his body, and she does not know where he obtained them. Regarding the Government's investigation, at Ms. Olsen’s request, we have provided the Government with relevant information including facts in the chronology of events surrounding Mr. Ledger's death and the fact that Ms. Olsen does not know the source of the drugs Mr. Ledger consumed. We don't know the source of the information being quoted in the media regarding the Government's inquiry, but these descriptions are incomplete and inaccurate."

If Mary Kate Olsen
knows nothing about what happened to Heath Ledger, why is she demanding immunity before she will talk to investigators?

MKO definitely has something to hide. I always thought it was strange that the masseuse(sp?) called her so many times. Now the little weird millionaire is hiding behind her attorney and asking for immunity? Drag her rich ass before the grand jury.
