non-FLDS grandmother wants custody of grandchildren

LIVE FROM THE COURTHOUSE: Day 2 of the polygamist sect's 60-day hearings

Courtroom A - Jayna Boyle

Child Protective Services attorney Gary Banks said this morning that CPS is working with authorities in Arizona to obtain a DNA sample from Warren Jeffs, the imprisoned prophet/leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Two hearings in Courtroom A in the Tom Green County Courthouse today focused on alleged children of Warren Steve Jeffs.

CPS presented service plans that were much the same as other plans developed for FLDS families - they outline goals that parents can strive for to get their children back. The plans included psychiatric assessments, educational assessments of children and the need to get a steady income to support the children.

One of Jeffs' "wives," Shannon Johnson, had three children mentioned in her hearing. Her situation was unique because her mother, Janet Johnson, left the polygamist sect in 1983 and now lives near San Antonio.

Janet Johnson, who was present for the hearing, said she would like to take custody of her three grandchildren.
Attorneys for the children said they want to pursue that arrangement, and Banks said CPS would look into it.

Janet Johnson was not available for comment after the hearing.

Here is a little more information on the Johnson situation:

* Shannon Johnson, the mother of 3-year-old Maria, appeared to support placing the girl with her mother, Maria's grandmother, who has left the FLDS church. Janice Johnson said she was living in Nevada, but had moved to San Antonio in the hopes of caring for her grandchild.

There is a father who left the sect many years ago who has also asked for custody, but the court has said he must submit to the same requirements as the sect members...menaing he has to undergo the psych eval, the parenting classes etc. He says he will comply if it will get his kids back.

I dont see anyone related to these kids as getting custody of them, even if they arent involved in the FLDS. They could easily give the kids back to their parents, so would be too much of a risk, IMO.

Utah father: Return children to FLDS mother

SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Arthur L. Barlow has never stepped foot on the YFZ Ranch and he left the polygamous sect that resides there four years ago.
But he is now being asked by Texas to comply with a family service plan as part of returning children taken from the ranch to their parents.
If it will get the children out of state custody, he'll do it, Arthur Barlow told a judge Tuesday.
"I'm here to help," he said, later adding that "I know the children belong [with their mother] or with me."
Arthur Barlow is one of several fathers who have come to San Angelo to attend status hearings at the Tom Green County Courthouse on the 460-plus children placed in state custody in April.
The state maintains the children were abused by a "pervasive pattern" of underage marriage and the polygamous lifestyle of their parents, who are members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Woe - there are a number of parents, mostly fathers, who have been desperately trying to see their children for varying periods of time. If they leave or are kicked out, Warren Jeffs does not allow the parents to have any contact with their children again.

This could be a blessing in disguise. These parents are having their children raised by other men - who they have to address as "father" - here is their opportunity to reunite with them.

There are some fathers who fully support having their children raised by the FLDS, under the FLDS doctrines - even though they themselves have left; it only makes sense to me that all fathers would have to be thoroughly screened to ensure that the children would be safe with them.

Nothing to keep them from joining another sect. Many of the sects disagree with Jeffs, these people could simply move into one of those. I know the one in Canada doesnt support Jeffs. I dont think these fathers should get the kids, after-all, they most likely had sex with young girls to make those babies. That is a crime, and there is no statute of limitations on child rape. These fathers could easily end up in jail by coming forward, not that that is a bad thing. Barlow had MANY MANY wives.

Actually, the BC group is made up of two factions; one follows Jeffs, the other follows Winston Blackmore.

"Bountiful, just north of the U.S. border, is already splintered: some follow Jeffs, others follow his excommunicated former bishop Winston Blackmore. Even though many are related or have same last name, members of the two groups are not allowed to talk with each other."

Yes, I know. Blackmore is whom I was speaking, since as many as 6 of the girls at YFZ are supposedly from his group.
