Paul Newman very sick

It's a very sad morning for acting legend Paul Newman.

As we mentioned last month, Newman was said to have been diagnosed and undergone surgery to deal with a terminal type of cancer.

Now, reports are surfacing that Newman is said to be dying of lung cancer.

How truly sad.

Paul is said to have been diagnosed at New York’s Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre, where he is currently receiving outpatient treatment.

Thankfully, he is said to be under the care of a leading oncologist in New York.

The 83-year old chain-smoker and his family have decline to comment.

A close family member was only quoted as saying, “It’s so awful. He’s dying.”

If you don't already know, Newman is the founder of "Newman's Own", which offers various food products, like spaghetti sauce and salad dressing.

The company donates all its earning to charity and with earnings reaching over $100 million since it's creation, Newman has made major contributions to those less fortunate.

Let's send our thoughts and good vibes to the Newman family.

Martha Stewart posted this photo of a very frail-looking Paul Newman on her blog, from an event a week ago.

According to multiple reports the actor is dying of lung cancer.

Newman and his family have not commented on the reports.

Ailing Paul Newman Turns Over $120M to Charity

Tuesday, June 10, 2008

Movie star Paul Newman has quietly turned over the entire value of his ownership in Newman’s Own — the company that makes salad dressing and cookies — to charity.

Completed over a two-year period in 2005 and 2006, the amount of his donations to Newman’s Own Foundation Inc. comes to an astounding $120 million
.

This is unprecedented for any movie star or anyone from what we call Hollywood. Of course Newman and actress wife Joanne Woodward have never been Hollywood types. They’ve lived their lives quietly in Westport, Conn., for the last 50 years. (They were married in January 1958. And people said it wouldn’t last!)

This column learned about this extraordinary gift as news started coming out recently about Newman’s battle with lung cancer. This is not news to my readers. I told you several months ago that Newman — who has five grown daughters — was seeing an oncologist, that he’d been in and out of Memorial Sloan Kettering hospital on many visits from Westport. Like everything else, the Newmans tried to keep Paul’s illness a private matter.

But a tip-off that he was maybe not doing so well came in late May. Newman announced that he would not direct a production of “Our Town” later this summer at the Westport Country Playhouse, where Woodward is the artistic director.

News of his illness seems to have been exacerbated by none other than neighbor Martha Stewart. She recently published pictures of Paul on her Web site from a party she hosted. He looks gaunt but nevertheless smiling his trademark smile. Nothing will set him back. This racecar driver and adventurer should not be written off as “dying.”

“He’s a fighter,” one of his close friends told me Tuesday morning. “And he’s going to keep fighting.”

In the meantime, I also told you last August that in Botswana, the Newman name is known not for being a movie star. It’s known for his famous Hole in the Wall Gang camps. The camps go to Africa every summer to run programs for impoverished and ill children. It’s the same program they run in dozens of similar camps all over the United States.

The Hole in the Wall camps are just a few of the places the hundreds of millions of dollars have gone that Newman has raised since he got the idea to bottle salad dressing for charity.

According to Newman’s Own federal tax filing for 2006, the actor personally gave away $8,746,500 to a variety of groups that support children, hurricane relief in the Gulf Coast, education and the arts.

Some of Newman’s recipients are well-known: He gave Rosie O’Donnell’s children's program $5,000 and even donated $25,000 to his pal Robert Redford’s Sundance Institute. But most of them are for the kinds of programs that we never hear about, the kind that simply keep people alive.

But don’t think that Newman — who received his Kennedy Center honor in 1992 and deserves a Presidential Medal of Freedom — did this because he suddenly thought he was dying. When he set up the new foundation, he hadn’t yet been diagnosed with lung cancer. It was just in honor of his 80th birthday, and an acknowledgment that he wanted to make sure his charities would continue receiving his largesse.

Denied: Paul Newman Cancer Reports "Not True"

Paul Newman does not have cancer, his rep says.

Reports that the iconic film legend is not battling terminal lung cancer are "not true," the actor's rep Toni Howard says, shooting down a month's worth of rumors.

Whispers of a life-threatening disease started in May when the 83-year-old citied illness for pulling out of directing duties at his Westport, Conn. hometown's production of Our Town.

The rest snowballed from there. Subsequent stories reported the Oscar winner, a lifelong smoker, was diagnosed at New York's Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and was being treated as an outpatient.

Paul Newman Comments on Cancer Rumors
By Stephen M. Silverman

Originally posted Wednesday June 11, 2008 08:30 AM EDT

Paul Newman has responded obliquely to a number of published reports that say he is gravely ill with cancer.

The 83-year-old Oscar winner's spokesman in Los Angeles, Jeff Sanderson, told Reuters and other media outlets on Tuesday: "Newman says he's doing nicely."

Without elaborating, Sanderson added: "He says he's doing nicely, and this is the statement I wanted to share with you, and that's what I have. I spoke to his office [in Connecticut]. This is the statement that came directly from him."

According to numerous but unconfirmed media accounts, the screen hero is undergoing outpatient treatment for lung cancer at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan.

A spokeswoman for the medical facility told Reuters she had no information about Newman's being a patient there.

Possibly helping to stir the current concerns about Newman's condition was a photo that appeared last Friday on Martha Stewart's blog, in which, standing beside the domestic expert at a fundraiser for the Newman-launched Hole in the Wall Camp Gang, for kids battling severe diseases, the handsome leading man looked like a shadow of his former self.

Born in Cleveland and raised in the Midwest, Newman was a Broadway actor before making his first movie in 1954, the ancient costume drama The Silver Chalice, which he has called one of the worst movies of all time.

A Screen Giant
He is much better known for a progression of hits in the later '50s and continuing through the '90s, including Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, The Sting and 1986's The Color of Money, which brought him his Oscar.

And all of these movies showed off his beautiful blue eyes to their best advantage.

One recent role was his distinctive voice only, as "Doc" Hudson in Disney-Pixar's 2006 Cars.

Last year he announced his retirement from acting, saying on Good Morning America, "I'm not able to work anymore ... at the level that I would want to."

Last month, citing unspecified health issues, he withdrew as director of a stage production of John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" at Connecticut's Westport Country Playhouse – whose artistic director is Newman's wife of 50 years, The Three Faces of Eve Oscar-winning actress Joanne Woodward.

Besides acting and directing, Newman has two great passions that have long driven him: racecar driving and doing charitable acts. Through his food company Newman's Own – whose motto is, "Shameless exploitation for the common good" – the star and his Newman’s Own Foundation have "donated all profits and royalties after taxes for educational and charitable purposes," according to the Newman's Own Web site.

In all, that has amounted to more than "$200 million to thousands of charities worldwide since l982."

Longtime friend: Paul Newman has cancer

John Christoffersen
Associated Press
Article Launched: 06/11/2008 09:49:19 AM PDT

NEW HAVEN - Paul Newman, who has recently appeared gaunt in photos and dropped plans to direct a play in his Connecticut hometown, is battling cancer, his longtime neighbor and business partner said today.

Writer A.E. Hotchner, who partnered with Newman to start Newman's Own salad dressing company in the 1980s, said the 83-year-old actor told him about the disease about 18 months ago. He doesn't say what kind of cancer, but said Newman is in active treatment.

"I know that it's a form of cancer," Hotchner told The Associated Press. "It's a form of cancer and he's dealing with it."

Newman issued a statement late Tuesday that he's "doing nicely" but didn't specifically address questions about cancer. A call was placed to his spokesman today seeking comment.

The Oscar winner appeared to have lost weight when he was photographed during practice for the Indianapolis 500 auto race last month. Martha Stewart, in an entry dated June 6, posted a photo on her blog of herself with the actor, who looked thin, at a luncheon to benefit the Hole in the Wall Gang camps for critically ill children. (The Hole in the Wall Gang was led by Newman's affable outlaw character, Butch, in the 1969 film "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.")

Newman won an Oscar for his leading role in 1986's "The Color of Money." His screen credits also include "Hud," "Cool Hand Luke," "The Verdict" and "Road to Perdition."

Hotchner said Newman had an operation a few years ago. "It was certainly somewhere in the area of the lung," he said.

"He's battling," Hotchner said. "He's doing all the right stuff. Paul is a fighter. He seems to be going through a good period right now."

Asked about his prognosis, Hotchner said, "Everybody is hopeful. That's all we know."

In 1982, Hotchner and Newman started a company to market Newman's original oil-and-vinegar dressing. Newman's Own, which began as a joke, grew into a multimillion-dollar business selling popcorn, salad dressing, spaghetti sauce and other foods. All the company's profits are donated to charities. By 2007, the company had donated more than $175 million, according to its Web site.

Last month, officials at Connecticut's Westport Country Playhouse cited unspecified health issues when they announced that Newman would not direct "Of Mice and Men" this fall.

Newman lives in Westport with his wife, Joanne Woodward.

Two friends said Tuesday that Newman appeared to be doing well.

"I think he's feeling quite well," said actor James Naughton, who spoke to Newman on Monday night. "As far as I can tell he's doing very well."

Newman had an infection over the winter, but seems to have that under control, Naughton said. He was lively at this month's Hole in the Wall Gang camp fundraiser, he said.

Michael Brockman, Newman's racing team partner, said Newman told him recently that he wants to get back into his race car for a test run and possibly another competition. His last race was last fall, he said.

"I think he's doing better than he was," Brockman said, noting that Newman had regained most of the weight he had lost.

"I think he looks great," said Brockman, who saw Newman last weekend. "I wish I looked that good."

Brockman called Newman "one of the best guys I ever met."

"He's just a regular guy," Brockman said. "He's humble."

Only weeks left to live????

Movie idol: Paul Newman in the 1950's

New reports claim that legendary actor Paul Newman has finished chemotherapy treatment for his cancer and that he's been given only a few weeks to live.

We hope that's not true.

The Oscar winner's battle with a yet-to-be officially confirmed cancer has been talked about for months, though he and his 'people' have continued to debunk claims that he's fighting for his life.

A source said that the renowned philanthropist has been discharged from the hospital because he wants to die at home.

"Paul didn't want to die in the hospital," says the insider. "(Wife) Joanne and his daughters are beside themselves with grief."

Sad, sad, sad.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Newman and his family.

Far From Dead, Newman's Raring to Race
August 22, 2008 5:43 PM

Don’t count Cool Hand Luke out of the race just yet.

Not only is Paul Newman not on his deathbed, but he’s raring to go -- to the racetrack. The 83-year-old actor did a routine run at Limerock track in Lakeville, Conn., Aug. 13, weeks after reports that he was ill and on the verge of death.

Limerock spokeswoman Marie Jannace told ABCNews.com that Newman drove a Corvette in what she described as a "typical trip to the track" for the actor.

“He looked fine,” she said. “He didn’t look gaunt. He's a thin man to begin with. He looked the same. He was still as handsome as he's always been and his eyes were as blue as ever.”

“It was a normal visit to the track, there was nothing unusual whatsoever about it,” she added. “He came here in a racing suit, with a baseball cap and sunglasses, how he normally comes here. He had his entourage like most celebrities do: his race team, his engineers, family and friends.”

Jannace said Newman’s been coming to the track, owned by Skip Barber, a legendary race car driver and friend of Newman’s, since the 1970s. She shot down Internet reports that Limerock closed down the track just for him.

“For years and years, whenever he has a desire to take a few laps or test a car, he’ll call here and say ‘Can I come on such and such a date, I need this much time.’ We accommodate him. He’s been a friend of the track and a supporter of the track for many years. But we didn’t close the track down -- we never do that,” Jannace said. “We make sure that he’s left alone. Everyone knows to leave him alone after all this time. [Fans] really do give him his privacy.”

In June, after Newman was photographed looking gaunt and sickly at an Indianapolis 500 event, reports surfaced that he was suffering from cancer.

"It's a form of cancer and he's dealing with it," A.E. Hotchner, a writer who partnered with Newman to start Newman's Own salad dressing company in the 1980s, told The Associated Press.

The actor's publicist issued a vague response to the rumors.

"Newman says he's doing nicely," Jeff Sanderson said in a statement to reporters.
