13-year-old boy charged in connection with paper mill fire
HOLYOKE - Police have arrested a 13-year-old boy in connection with a nine-alarm fire that destroyed a historic Holyoke paper mill.
Lt. Michael Higgins says the boy, whose name was not released because of his age, was arrested on Tuesday night and charged with burning a building and breaking and entering in the nightime with intent to commit a felony.
He spent the night at a youth detention facility and is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Holyoke Juvenile Court.
About 80 firefighters battled the blaze that sent one firefighter to the hospital with heat stress.
Chief David LaFond suspected arson because the abandoned building had no power.
The mill, which covered two city blocks, began operating in 1853 and closed in 2005.
