Cliffhanger

Posted by Joe Dwinell at 2:02 pm

The judge in the Entwistle double-murder case cut off testimony today just as a Medford detective was about to say what alleged activity was going on with a laptop taken from the Entwistle murder scene.

It sent the jury home, I’m sure, wanting to arrive early tomorrow. Be back with notes from the day. Here are those notes …

* The attorney for the Entwistles’ Hopkinton landlords testified he received a call from Neil Entwistle in England after the murders of his wife and child. The Brit, he said, wanted all the jewelry and not much else.

* Entwistle left a voice message on the lawyer’s machine and it was played for the jury. It’s the only time we’ve heard from the 29-year-old defendant. He’s totally British and was totally pleasant on that call.

* In case you didn’t know, putting quote marks around your Google search will get you better — or more specific — results. The Entwistle laptop showed, according to today’s testimony, that “how to kill with a knife” was tapped into Google with the quote marks.

* A user using the user name “ent” first visited G4TV in 2004, according to computer data on a laptop taken from the Entwistles’ Hopkinton home after the murders. The site is for gamers.

* The CIA was one of the results when the suspect computer was used to search for “ways to kill with a knife.”

* Remember Medford Detective Lawrence James (pictured in pool photo below). His computer work on the laptop taken from the Entwistle home is, so far, the home run in this case for the prosecution. He knows where the bytes are buried.

The computer evidence in the Entwistle double-murder trial just took a turn away from eBay, PayPal, cheap airline flights (more on that) to escort services, including …

* Hot local escorts (.com)
* Escorts naughty nightlife (.com)
* Escort in Worcester (.com)
* Half-price escorts (.com)

In an almost minute-by-minute rundown, testimony by a Medford detective states the laptop seized from Neil Entwistle’s Hopkinton home after his wife and baby were murdered must have been smoking. The user — “ent,” according to testimony — looked up “last-minute” flights, British Airways, Manchester, UK, flights … and sex sites on that laptop.

Here’s a quick example of the time stamps being rattled off by the detective for laptop activity on Jan. 18, 2006, two days before the murders…

13:41:21 — Half-price escorts

13:46:07 — Half-price escorts

13:52:14 — Escort in Worcester

13:52:59 — Hot local escorts

13:54:10 — (an image file) Hot local escorts

13:58:34 — Escorts naughty nightlife

14:47:48 — Adult Friend Finder (a sex-swinger site)

Somebody with the user name “ent” was busy that day, this testimony sure shows.

Friends forever?

Two of Neil Entwistle’s college friends told the blog outside Courtroom 430 that they’ll stand by their brainy buddy — but with a catch. Call it a careful equivocation.

If he’s found guilty of murdering his wife and child, he’s on his own.

“If convicted of killing, I’m going to tame my opinion quite a bit,” said Benjamin Pryor of London. (Pictured.)

Pryor was reading “The Last Tycoons” on a court bench outside this Woburn court waiting for his fellow Brit to finish his testimony. (The book is about the “secret history” of the Wall Street firm Lazard Frères & Co.)

The polite Pryor said he can’t answer if his University of York pal is guilty or not. “I don’t know enough to answer that. I hope not,” he said. as for seeing Neil before a jury awaiting his fate — freedom or life in prison — Pryor said it was “hard to see.”

But catching a glimpse of Pryor and fellow rowing pal Dashiel Munding brought a grin to Entwistle’s face. (As shown in this AP pool photo.)

Munding — called “Dash” by his friends — also told the blog after his testimony that Neil, in his opinion, is getting a fair trial. But he too admitted “it is difficult to see him.”

So, the blog asked, is he guilty?

“I can’t answer that,” said Dash (pictured). “I don’t have enough evidence to decide that.”

The young men testified they took Neil under their wing after he jetted back to England after the murders of his wife and child. Entwistle told them, according to testimony, he felt “isolated” back in the states as Rachel’s family grieved. The friends added that Neil spoke of his “perilous” financial situation, his hefty “mortgage” (yes, they said mortgage when, in fact, Neil was renting his Hopkinton home) and they went out to dinner in London and watched “Fun with Dick and Jane” to loosen their buddy up.

Odd choice of movie. The plot tells of a successful suburban couple who hit financial ruin and turn to crime after the husband loses his job.

Dash, a stocky, easy-going guy who runs a music studio and works on Web sites back in Cornwall, England, also testified he told Neil the cops were on his tail. That’s when his buddy, he said, opted to jump on the London Underground and run from it all. It didn’t work. He was arrested on Feb. 8, 2006, on the subway.

Entwistle now finds himself sitting — isolated — as the ninth day of testimony in this blockbuster-a-day trial is set to commence. Stay tuned.

Thanks Fash.

So much for a "loving" husband, and "loving" couple.

Confused

He looked up sex sites AFTER he 'found' his wife and baby dead.

that's messed up.

I don't think that's accurate (yet). I think the writer may be guilty of poor punctuation- try reading it like this:
states the laptop, seized from Neil Entwistle’s Hopkinton home after his wife and baby were murdered, must have been smoking

The minute-by-minute rundown listed was from 2 days before they were killed.

ETA: Thank you, Fash, for the daily updates- my sat is out so I can't even watch the news (though, living in NE Iowa/SW Wisconsin, that may be a good thing this week).

Okay I may be sick listening to the defense allude to the fact that Rachel murdered Lillian then shot herself and that she wouldn't have felt more than skin deep pain. Shocked Silly me for thinking that labor was painful. Apparently that pain is minor compared to skin pain. Oh and those of you who've ever had an MI and thought that you would die from the pain alone, were faking because skin pain is the biggy.
Who exactly is paying for the unemployed Neil Entwistles defense team anyway?? And how do these lawyers sleep at night grasping at such straws??
I can't wait to hear how Rachel with a bullet wound to her left chest and forehead managed to return the gun to her parents house, walking presumably because her loving husband had the only car to go shopping at Staples for nothing, and all the while not bleeding anywhere. Then still not bleeding, crawls back into bed with her murdered baby to lie down and finally die.
She was depressed. She sure looks depressed in all the photographs taken of her in absolute awe of her daughter. Nice try.
I'm officially disgusted. I was willing to afford Mr. Entwistle the benefit of innocence until proof of otherwise. That proof came this morning. I only hope the jury is as appalled and disgusted as I am.

Just another thought grrrrrr......
The text book they keep referring to, the one the Pathologist/ Medical Examiner studied before writing his board exam. I wonder what edition the defense attorney keeps referring to. Was it the edition he studied or a newer one? Is there a newer one? Medical texts are rewritten every year because they are actually almost obsolete by the time they're published.
