Keith Karnatz, 23, of Grand Rapids, Wisconsin, missing

Rapids-area man still missing, search continues

July 7, 2008

The search continues into a third day for a Wisconsin Rapids-area man who has not been seen since he left a Fourth of July fireworks show.

Authorities are looking for Keith Karnatz, 23, of Grand Rapids, whose boat and vehicle still are parked at a friend’s house in Wisconsin Rapids. He didn’t show up for work at 7:30 a.m. today at Carpet City in Plover.

“We’re still dealing with the same situation we had yesterday,” said Dave Lewandowski, Grand Rapids police chief. “This is not like him to be gone any period of time, especially since Friday night.”

Foul play is not suspected at this point, Lewandowski said.

Karnatz has been missing since 11 p.m. Friday when he was last seen at the fireworks in downtown Wisconsin Rapids. He was reported missing about 11 a.m. Sunday after family and friends had not seen or heard from him and could not reach him on his cell phone.

Search efforts started late Sunday afternoon and continued until dark. Officials concentrated on routes Karnatz might have taken if walking to his friends’ or parents’ house, where he lives.

Officials are asking residents and businesses in the search area from 16th Street South by Lincoln High School and east to Grand Rapids to “really check their property,” said Kurt Heuer, Wisconsin Rapids police chief.

“We’re going to utilize some folks we’ve used in the past, to use dogs in the area he was last seen,” Heuer said.

Wisconsin Rapids Police Department personnel will pick up the search from the Riverview Hospital area.

“We’re going to try and get civil defense (air) out to give us a hand,” Lewandowski said.

Volunteers are not needed at this point, officials said. Those who want to help can sign up at the search command center at the Grand Rapids Fire Department and wait until they might be needed. Those who want to volunteer should come prepared with long pants, long-sleeved shirts and closed-toe shoes.

“Some of the areas were going to be covering is kind of swampish — tall grass, thick trees,” Heuer said.

The American Red Cross of South Wood County will be utilized at the command site.

Authorities search for missing Grand Rapids man
Update: Investigators release name

Deb Cleworth • Daily Tribune Staff • July 6, 2008

Keith Karnatz is described as 6 feet, 3 inches, 190 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes. Dave Lewandowski, Grand Rapids police chief, said he was last seen Friday in downtown Wisconsin Rapid after the fireworks.

Family members reported him missing about 11 a.m. today.

Karnatz was wearing shorts of unknown color, a white T-shirt, sandals and no hat, Lewandowski said.

“I’ve got a lot of family here, and they’re really upset,” Lewandowski said. “The family is adamant this is not like him. They are worried something is wrong.”

Lewandowski said Karnatz went to look for a ride following the fireworks and has not been seen since. His vehicle and boat were parked on Griffith Avenue, near The Ridges.

The primary search is focused on the route Karnatz might have gone to return to his property or vehicle. Officials think he might have taken the Riverview Expressway to 32nd Street South toward The Ridges.

Officials have checked with family and friends and have obtained cell phone records since Friday night.

“We’ve exhausted all the contacts,” Lewandowski said.

Karnatz’s cell phone is not on, he said, and the last call was made at 11:08 p.m. Friday.

Anyone with information about Karnatz is asked to call the Wood County Sheriff's Department at 421-8700.

He might have just get lost in the wooded area, trying to find a shortcut to get home. Maybe he has a broken leg and is stuck where he is. I wished his cell phone would be on. Who knows, maybe the battery is dead. It seems to happen all to often.

I hope they find him soon and that he is more or less ok.

Search continues for missing Grand Rapids man

By Karen Madden • For the Wausau Daily Herald • July 8, 2008

WISCONSIN RAPIDS — Personnel from fire departments throughout central Wisconsin and volunteers helped search for a 23-year-old Grand Rapids man who has been missing since Friday.

Keith Karnatz was last seen by friends at the Wisconsin Rapids fireworks display Friday night, Grand Rapids Police Chief Dave Lewandowski said. Karnatz was reported missing at about 11 a.m. Sunday. A check of his cell phone records showed officials that he last used it at 11:15 p.m. Friday.

Searchers looked for Karnatz until nightfall Sunday, and Grand Rapids officials began calling for volunteers from fire departments at about 9 a.m. Monday. The first groups went out at about 10 a.m. Monday, Lewandowski said.

Throughout the day, a patrol including three bloodhound dogs and at least two boats led by Wisconsin Rapids Police Department Chief Kurt Heuer, searched along the banks of the Wisconsin River, Lewandowski said.

Thunderstorms delayed the search for two hours Monday evening, as volunteers gathered around a television placed outside the Municipal Building to receive news about the storm.

The day’s final search party went out at about 7:15 p.m. to search a wooded area around Two Mile Avenue and Sampson Street near the South Wood County Airport.

Grand Rapids Fire Chief Scott Bernette was running operations Monday, with Lewandowski acting as second in command, keeping volunteers and media updated on the search’s progress. A steady flow of emergency personnel and volunteers made overseeing operations easier, Lewandowski said.

“We’re getting enough people to search the areas, but not too many to handle,” he said.

The American Red Cross and The Salvation Army were called to assist in operations. The Red Cross used donations to keep volunteers fed and hydrated, said Pattie Kelnhofer, disaster director for the Wood County Chapter.

“The response we get from the community is just incredible,” Kelnhofer said.
Officials planned to expand the search area today.

“This isn’t over by a long shot,” Lewandowski said.

Update: 2 abducted men found; 3rd man arrested

By Karen Madden • Gannett Wisconsin Media • July 9, 2008

WISCONSIN RAPIDS -- A 46-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after authorities found two missing men at a house southeast of Wisconsin Rapids.

Keith Karnatz, 23, who had been missing since Friday, was found hours after investigators called off the search for him.

Another man, reported missing in Wisconsin Rapids on Tuesday, was found at a house at 10730 52nd St. in the town of Saratoga. Investigators were withholding further information about the second man.

Both missing men were in good condition, but shaken, Shocked according to preliminary reports, Wood County Sheriff Thomas Reichert said.

Both men were taken against their will and held involuntarily, Shocked Shocked Shocked according to the Wood County Sheriff's Department.

Authorities have not released the name of the man taken into custody in connection with the investigation, but witnesses said he was arrested at the house where Karnatz was found.

Karnatz was back at his town of Grand Rapids home today, recovering from what his mother, Patti, described as a traumatic time.

“Keith is doing well,” she said in a short phone interview this morning. “This is just a really traumatic time for him, and we’re rallying around him right now.”

She said Keith, who was hospitalized after police found him, was up and walking around. Family and close friends were at the Karnatz home, lending emotional support.

Volunteers from more than 20 emergency agencies helped to search for Karnitz in an area that stretched from Wisconsin Rapids to Karnatz's home east of the city over a period of three days.

Karnatz had been enjoying the Fourth of July fireworks in Wisconsin Rapids when he disappeared about 11 p.m. He told friends he was going to walk home.

Affidavit: Man pretended to be cop, then chained, stripped and assaulted two men
Wausau Daily Herald • July 9, 2008

WISCONSIN RAPIDS — What started as a frantic search for a 23-year-old missing man has evolved into a bizarre tale of two young men kidnapped by a man who pretended to be a police officer and chained them naked in his house.

The latest development came this afternoon in Wood County Circuit Court, where a judge ordered that 46-year-old Edward J. Lanphear be held in jail on a $1 million cash bond. Lanphear faces charges that he took and held the two men against their will in his home near Wisconsin Rapids.

A probable cause affidavit says Lanphear approached one of the men, 23-year-old Keith Karnatz, early Saturday outside Karnhatz's home in Grand Rapids and claimed to be a Grand Rapids police officer. He handcuffed Karnhatz, then knocked him out with a blow to the head when the handcuffs came loose, according to the report.

According to the affidavit:

* Karnhatz awoke in Lanphear's basement in the town of Saratoga, bound by chains and unable to free himself. Lanphear used a knife to cut off his victim's clothing and then repeatedly physically assaulted him.

* Lanphear attached one end of a string to the trigger of a shotgun and the other end to the chains wrapped around Karnhatz. He told Karnhatz that if he moved, it would tighten the string around the shotgun and fire the weapon.

* Karnhatz was left on the basement floor, which was covered in plastic.

* A 21-year-old Wisconsin Rapids man told police he was drinking at Johnny's Bar in Wisconsin Rapids between Sunday night and early Monday, then went to his car parked outside the tavern and passed out. When he awoke, he found himself chained up and hanging inside an unfamiliar garage, with all his clothes removed.

* The second victim told police that he knew Lanphear was his assailant because he had seen him frequently in Johnny's Bar.

* The 21-year-old man said Lanphear hit him in the head with a metal pipe or metal device, cutting his left eye and bruising his eyebrow and cheek. He said his hands were bound by "flex cuffs" and his eyes were covered by a device so that he couldn't see.

* In addition to his eye and cheek injuries, the 21-year-old man had severe injuries to his nose.

* The man said that he was able to escape the garage and ran across the street, naked and still partially bound by chains, and reported his kidnapping to the residents there.

"Mr. Lanphear has indicated to (investigator Mark) Neuman through the course of this investigation that he knew what he did was wrong." the affidavit reads.

Authorities were led to Lanphear's home at 10730 52nd St. S. in the town of Saratoga after the resident across the street reported that a naked, bleeding man had shown up on his porch. That call came at about 8 p.m. Tuesday.

When investigators went to Lanphear's home, they found Karnatz, who had been the subject of a large-scale search since he was reported missing Sunday morning. He had not been seen since he left the Wisconsin Rapids fireworks show about 11 p.m. Friday.

The second man was reported missing around 12:40 p.m. Tuesday.

Wisconsin Rapids and Wood County law enforcement officers, assisted by investigators from the State Crime Lab office in Wausau, were searching Lanphear's home this afternoon and blocked access by members of the public.

Karnatz was back home Wednesday, recovering, said his mother, Patti.

“Keith is doing well,” she said in a short phone interview with the Daily Tribune of Wisconsin Rapids this morning. “This is just a really traumatic time for him, and we’re rallying around him right now.”

She said her son, who was treated at Riverview Hospital on Tuesday night, was up and walking around. Family and close friends were at the Karnatz home, lending emotional support.

The Wausau Daily Herald and the Daily Tribune of Wisconsin Rapids are continuing to pursue information in the case for further updates.

Cash bond set in missing men case
July 9, 2008

A $1 million cash bond was set in Wood County Circuit Court this afternoon for a 46-year-old man accused of taking two men against their will and holding them involuntarily.

Edward J. Lanphear, 46, of 10730 52nd St. S., Saratoga, is suspected of holding Keith Karnatz, 23, of Grand Rapids and another man at his residence, according to Wisconsin Rapids police records.

Authorities have not released the name of the second man, who was reported missing around 12:40 p.m. Tuesday. His vehicle was found near a Wisconsin Rapids tavern.

Katie, I'm shocked as well! I thought this young man got maybe just disoriented at night, maybe he was a little tipsy, maybe he hurt his leg and could not walk home and the search team would find him.

He is quite tall, 6' 3" and 190 lbs. It's not like a little boy who can get easily snatched off the street.

I find it sad and horrible at the same time that actually nobody is safe anymore!

That is so tragically true, CK. How many men, other than absolute thugs, would argue with someone claiming to be a cop? Badges and other police equipment/uniforms are so easy to get that it's disgusting.

I'm sorry that these young men had to endure what they did, but very happy to hear they are alive and on the mend.

I agree, Tulsad. This thug posed as a cop to overpower those young men.

I'm glad both are alive and hopefully, they will recover soon from this ordeal

Here is a pic of the POS. I hope he gets a hefty sentence for what he did.
