Millionaire Missing on Hawaii's Main Island of Oahu

HONOLULU — The millionaire founder of an Internet software security company remained missing on Hawaii's main island of Oahu this week, police said.
Steven Thomas, 36, was last seen June 30 at the Princess Kaiulani Hotel in Waikiki, where his mother and a cousin were staying.
His family said he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in April but has refused medication.
"He thinks everyone on the island is out to get him," Candis Thomas said of her husband's bipolar condition. "He thinks the military is involved, he thinks that aliens are involved, and he's just been in a real delusion state of being fearful."
Thomas was arrested April 27 and taken to Castle Medical Center after he ran naked into the middle of a race/walk in front of his home in Lanikai. He also owns a home in Boulder, Colo.
He is the founder of Boulder-based Webroot Software Inc. The software company that created the Spy Sweeper and Window Washer programs was sold in 2004 to a group of investors for about $108 million.
Thomas was concerned about the poor performance of his investment portfolio and discussions about moving back to Colorado full-time, his wife said.
"I really want to appeal to anyone who may have seen my husband. He's a sweet, wonderful person. I am pretty much beside myself. I am beyond desperate."
"He needs professional help," she said. "He's been in this state of suffering from severe illness. If he doesn't get the medical help he needs this could be a mess."
Steven Thomas' identical twin brother, Kevin Thomas, has joined in the search.
"We are grieving and we just want to get my brother back," Kevin Thomas said.
The brothers' mother is also on Oahu, working with police and a private investigator.
Police have received reports of Steven Thomas being seen, but officers have been unable to locate him.
"He's a step ahead of us. If you spot someone, even if you (only) think it's him, call us," Sgt. Kim Buffet said. "He could be anywhere."

Sad, hope he's ok.
I don't know a whole lot about these disorders but doesn't it sound like he's schizophrenic not bipolar?

I thought that too since he is thinking everyone is after him. I've known a couple of people who were bipolor and he doesn't sound like that to me...

This may help you understand a bit more, Pro; it's very complex.
As defined in the Physicians' Desk Reference (PDR), paranoia is "a severe but relatively rare mental disorder characterized by the presence of systematized delusions, often of a persecutory character involving being followed, poisoned, or harmed by other means, in an otherwise intact personality." In other words, an individual who is apparently functional in other respects develops irrational, unfounded beliefs, usually about being harmed or harassed by others. These beliefs usually center around a theme such as those mentioned above. The website Dictionary.com sums this up simply as an "extreme, irrational distrust of others."
Paranoia can be present as a psychotic feature in both the depressed and manic episodes of Bipolar Disorder. It is also the hallmark symptom found in the Paranoid type of Schizophrenia and the Persecutory type of Delusional Disorder. In addition to these, there is also a Paranoid Personality Disorder in which there is an extreme mistrust of other people without psychotic features.
So the answer is yes, paranoia can be a part of bipolar disorder, and it generally indicates Bipolar I disorder, as it is generally delusional paranoia and therefore psychotic. A person may tend to "hear" people plotting against him through walls, when in fact no such conversations were taking place and nothing could possibly have been heard through the walls in question. This is a good example of delusional paranoia.

Former Colorado Businessman Had Been Missing 2 Weeks
HONOLULU -- Police and the medical examiner's office have identified a body discovered below the Pali Highway lookout as Steven Thomas, the 36-year-old millionaire who has been missing for two weeks.
Three hikers found the body Sunday, a couple hundred feet below the lookout. It was recovered by firefighters who had to be lowered into the forested area.
Thomas founded a Colorado-based Internet software security company and owned a home in Boulder. He had been missing since June 30. He was last seen in Waikiki, where his mother and a cousin were staying.

Thomas controlled a fortune estimated at $50 million.
In Boulder, the company he founded had waited for news that Thomas was located.
"You know the entire Webroot community is very concerned about Steve’s well-being. We’ll do anything to support Steve and his family through this time," said Bob Berger, earlier this week.

I'm so sorry that this is the outcome. He was brilliant ,loved by his family ,young& successful.If only he had been willing to take medication,he could still be with his loved ones. Rest in Peace

Very sad. I think I would have given up my home in Colorado before I gave one up on Oahu, but that is just me. I have always wanted to live on Oahu.
