Joel Osteen's Wife Faces Trial Over In-Flight Argument

Osteen's Wife on Trial for Temper Tantrum

Can a crankiness land you in court? The case of Sandra Brown v. Victoria Osteen is the story of a chance encounter on an airplane that turned into a nasty legal battle.

Osteen is the wife of popular self-help author and television minister Joel Osteen, who heads the Lakewood Church, Houston's largest congregation. Brown is a flight attendant for Continental Airlines.

Osteen and her family were on Brown's flight from Houston to Vail, Colo., two years ago when, according to court documents, witnesses said Osteen became upset about a spill on the armrest of her first-class seat. She asked the flight attendants to clean up the spill and when they did not respond quickly enough, Osteen became confrontational, according to documents filed in the civil case that goes to trial today.

The lawsuit, filed in Harris County Civil Court in Houston, alleges that Victoria Osteen "shoved, grabbed and pulled the flight attendants." The suit goes on to claim that Osteen elbowed Brown, who was the flight manager, while allegedly trying to get into the cockpit of the airplane.

Brown's attorney, Reginald McKamie, contends that Osteen has a dark side that the trial will expose. His client, he said, was forced into civil court because Continental did not call police when the incident happened. Osteen and her family were asked to leave the flight; Osteen was later fined $3,000 by the Federal Aviation Administration for interfering with a flight crew member.

The attorney representing Victoria Osteen in the lawsuit is the legendary Rusty Hardin, who said his client's actions have been exaggerated and that he looked forward to having her side of the story told in court.

Hardin has represented embattled baseball pitcher Roger Clemens. He also famously won a case (on appeal) against the accounting giant Arthur Anderson over charges that the company had destroyed Enron documents.

But Hardin prevailed over Anna Nicole Smith, blocking her attempt to inherit all the vast fortune of J. Howard Marshall II, her late husband.

The portrait of an out-of-control Victoria Osteen painted by the lawsuit contrasts with the image of the perfectly groomed spouse who is seen helping her husband broadcast his message around the world each Sunday from the Lakewood Church. She was recently named co-pastor of the 60,000-member congregation. The Osteen's ministry reaches millions more through television, and through Joel Osteen's best-selling books.

Joel Osteen is reportedly expected to testify at the trial.

Brown's attorney promises surprises in court, but it will be up to a jury to decide whether Victoria Osteen was rude and pushy to the point of being legally liable.

Victoria Osteen stands beside her husband, Lakewood Church pastor Joel Osteen, during services at the church in 2005. She has been sued by a Continental Airlines flight attendant, who said Osteen pushed and shoved her after she failed to promptly clean up a spill on Osteen's first-class seat.

Flight attendant: Osteen's wife pushed co-worker

Aug 7, 6:31 PM (ET)

HOUSTON (AP) - The wife of evangelical pastor Joel Osteen got physical when her demands that a small spill on her seat be cleaned up were not immediately met, a flight attendant testified Thursday at a civil trial over the incident.

Continental Airlines flight attendant Maria Johnson testified that Victoria Osteen grew increasingly agitated and pushed her co-worker Sharon Brown, though the flight attendants had remained professional and reassured her a crew had been called to clean the spill, which was about the size of a 50-cent piece.

"She was demanding that attention be given to her immediately," Johnson said. She added that Victoria Osteen kept saying: "This is ridiculous. I'm a first-class passenger."

Brown is suing Victoria Osteen, alleging that she threw her against a bathroom door and elbowed her in the breast before the start of a 2005 flight to Vail, Colo.

Johnson confirmed Brown's claims that Victoria Osteen became so upset she tried to get into the cockpit and had to be physically restrained.

"She took Sharon by the shoulders and pushed her out of the way. Sharon stumbled," Johnson testified.

Rusty Hardin, Victoria Osteen's attorney, said the lawsuit is simply a money grab.

"This is nothing more than an attempted extortion," Hardin told jurors during opening statements in the trial in which he said his client did nothing wrong. While questioning Johnson, Hardin suggested that she and Brown might have overreacted or that Johnson might not have remembered the confrontation correctly.

Just before her testimony concluded, Johnson suggested race might have played a role because of remarks Victoria Osteen made about wanting to deal only with Johnson, who is white, and not with Brown or another flight attendant on the plane, who are black.

Rusty Hardin condemned Johnson's claim and pointed out the racial diversity of the congregation at Lakewood Church, of which Victoria Osteen is co-pastor. The Houston church is a converted basketball arena where about 42,000 people flock each week for services where her husband preaches.

Joel Osteen, who was by his wife's side in court Thursday, has written books that have been sold around the globe, and his weekly television address is broadcast nationally and internationally.

Brown's attorney, Reginald McKamie, told jurors during his opening statement that his client was simply doing her job.

"Sharon was attacked by someone in the community who supposedly represents a higher degree of human decency," he said.

Brown's suit claims the flight attendants asked to have Victoria Osteen removed from the plane. Hardin told jurors Victoria Osteen and her family left voluntarily. The incident delayed the flight about 2 1/2 hours.

Hardin admitted that Victoria Osteen can be a "very excitable and expressive person," but that she was never out of control.

"Victoria Osteen never attacked her, never tried to get in the cockpit," Hardin said. "The aggressor and the person who was out of control, who flipped out, was Ms. Brown."

The Osteens were both expected to testify during the trial.

Brown wants an apology and punitive damages amounting to 10 percent of Victoria Osteen's net worth as part of her suit.

"They will say this is about money. But that is the only remedy a jury can offer," McKamie said.

McKamie said Brown, who had undergone reconstructive surgery before the incident on her breasts due to illness, was injured when she was hit on her chest. Brown also suffers from anxiety because of the incident, and her faith was affected, her attorney said. Brown is also suing Victoria Osteen for medical expenses for counseling.

But Hardin told jurors there is no evidence Brown sustained any injuries, including claims she now suffers from hemorrhoids.

The Federal Aviation Administration fined Victoria Osteen $3,000 for interfering with a crew member.

Hardin told jurors Victoria Osteen paid the FAA fine not because she was guilty but as a way to conclude the matter and avoid any embarrassment for her church.

Victoria Osteen.... targeted or guilty of assult?

Flight attendant says Osteen's wife acted like a diva

By JUAN A. LOZANO – 6 hours ago

HOUSTON (AP) — The wife of renowned evangelical pastor Joel Osteen acted like a combative diva when a small spill on her airline seat was not immediately cleaned up, a flight attendant who was also on the plane testified Thursday.

The testimony came during the civil trial of a lawsuit that accuses Victoria Osteen, the co-pastor a Houston megachurch, of assaulting a flight attendant before the start of a 2005 flight to Vail, Colo.

Continental Airlines flight attendant Sharon Brown alleges Victoria Osteen threw her against a bathroom door and elbowed her in the left breast during an angry outburst over some spilled liquid on her first-class seat. Brown claims Victoria Osteen became so upset she tried to get into the cockpit and had to be physically restrained.

Brown's co-worker, Maria Johnson, confirmed that in her testimony Thursday.

"She took Sharon by the shoulders and pushed her out of the way. Sharon stumbled," Johnson said

Rusty Hardin, Victoria Osteen's attorney, said earlier Thursday the lawsuit is simply a money grab.

"This is nothing more than an attempted extortion," Hardin told jurors during opening statements.

Johnson testified that before Victoria Osteen tried to get in the cockpit, she became increasingly agitated while she and Brown remained professional and reassured her a crew had been called to clean the spill, which was about the size of a 50-cent piece.

"She was demanding that attention be given to her immediately," Johnson said.

Johnson told jurors that Victoria Osteen kept saying: "This is ridiculous. I'm a first-class passenger."

"Victoria Osteen never attacked her, never tried to get in the cockpit," Hardin said. "The aggressor and the person who was out of control, who flipped out, was Ms. Brown."

About 42,000 people flock to Lakewood Church every week to hear Victoria Osteen's husband Joel Osteen, whose weekly television address is broadcast nationally and internationally and whose books have been sold across the globe.

Brown also suffers from anxiety because of the incident and that her faith was affected, her attorney said. Brown is also suing Victoria Osteen for medical expenses for counseling.

But Hardin told jurors there is no evidence Brown sustained any injuries, including claims she now suffers from hemorrhoids.

Hardin told jurors Victoria Osteen paid the FAA fine not because she was guilty but as a way to conclude the matter and avoid any embarrassment for her church.

A similar incident happened to Robert Shuller a few years back when he had an altercation with what was I believe a "gay" flight attendant. It's never about money is it? Yeah right. Shocked

I'm no fan of Shuller but this incident sounds very familiar. Shocked

It IS about money.
The airline already fined her. Sheesh. So in that respect, IMO, Osteen was "punished" for her actions.
Brown is a money-hungry grub.

Yes, it's about the money. Superstar evangelists also say it's not about the money. In that sense, this case is hilarious.

I used to work with a pastor's wife whose church I used to attend. I kind of put her on a pedestal because of her being the wife of a pastor. She was supposed to be perfect being married to a pastor...right? I found out in short order that she was human just like anyone else and had flaws. While she was a wonderful woman, she could also be impatient and very sarcastic. She could be uncharitable with her comments and tended to gossip.

I found myself being disappointed in her, but then I realized that this was my problem. I was the one who placed her in such a lofty catagory.

I have little doubt that Victoria is a very spoiled woman who is used to getting her own way. They are very wealthy people now and I have listened to many of her husband's sermons. I really like Joel. He is the only pastor that really speaks to me and I find him very easy to listen to. However, he has talked about his wife's shopping habits and how she is much more vocal than he is.

I feel that Victoria should have to apologize to the woman and maybe pay a small amount of money for manhandling her, but not 10% of her net worth. That is just ridiculous.

If anything else, maybe this will show Victoria that she should keep her temper and her attitude in check.

WhooHoo! Justice! Osteens should countersue

Jury says Osteen did not assault flight attendant

By JUAN A. LOZANO – 2 hours ago

HOUSTON (AP) — The wife of megachurch pastor Joel Osteen did not assault a flight attendant in an angry tirade over a stain on her first-class seat, a civil jury unanimously ruled Thursday.

The jurors rejected the claims in a lawsuit filed by Continental Airlines flight attendant Sharon Brown, who had been seeking at least $405,000 for actual damages — physical and mental pain as a result of an attack she alleged took place before the start of a December 2005 flight from Houston to Vail, Colo.

"I'm glad it's over," Victoria Osteen said afterward. "I expected it because it's the truth and I know the truth always stands firm."

Brown claimed Victoria Osteen got so upset when a spill on her first-class seat's armrest was not quickly cleaned up that she threw the flight attendant against a bathroom door and elbowed her in the left breast while attempting to rush the cockpit.

Victoria Osteen, the co-pastor of Houston's popular Lakewood Church, testified no such incident took place, as did her husband and other first-class passengers. Victoria Osteen's lawyer dismissed Brown's lawsuit as a made-up story concocted to land a courtroom payday.

Joel Osteen, whose church draws about 42,000 a week for services and whose TV show and books are popular around the world, said he and his family hold no ill will toward Brown.

"It's a great vindication and shows us the faithfulness of God," he said.

Reginald McKamie, Brown's attorney, said afterward, "We're disappointed in the verdict."

In his closing argument, Rusty Hardin, Victoria Osteen's attorney, described the incident as a verbal dispute, and labeled Brown's claims that she suffered injuries such as post-traumatic stress disorder a "sacrilege" and a "blasphemy."

Hardin questioned Brown's motives for filing the lawsuit, telling jurors if an assault had taken place and the flight attendant had truly wanted Victoria Osteen to be held accountable, she would have sought criminal charges.

"If your motives are pure, that's where you go first," he said. "If you want to hold her responsible and not look to line your pockets and hit the lottery then you go to law enforcement. She didn't do that."

In his closing argument, McKamie told jurors that because of her status as a religious leader, Victoria Osteen felt she had "favor from God." That led her to believe she was above reproach for humiliating and assaulting his client, he said.

"Sharon Brown, when Victoria assaulted her, was humiliated and she lost her trust in her faith providers," said McKamie.

It's great that the Osteens had the guts to stand up to this B***H instead of giving her a coerced payday. These frivolous suits have to stop.

FWIW, I had the pleasure to meet Pastor John Osteen, Joel's dad, back in the early 90s.

John Osteen, was my pastor's pastor. Shocked

(Snipped)

In his closing argument earlier Thursday, Hardin described the incident as a verbal dispute, and labeled Brown's claims that she suffered injuries such as post-traumatic stress disorder a "sacrilege" and a "blasphemy."

The jury's foreman, Gilles Labbe, said he and other jurors believed what happened on the plane was only a minor dispute between a passenger and one or more of the flight attendants.

"My personal point of view (the lawsuit) was a complete waste of time because the incident didn't rise to any kind of level. I fly all the time. I've seen a lot worse than that happen on airplanes."

Brown quickly left the courtroom without talking to reporters, but in a brief statement her attorney read, she said, "We gave the truth to the jury. We are happy we had an opportunity to try our case."

The Osteens are co-pastors of Lakewood Church, which draws about 42,000 people each week for services. Joel Osteen's weekly television address is broadcast in the U.S. and internationally and his books are sold around the globe.

The Osteens paid a $3,000 fine the Federal Aviation Administration levied against Victoria Osteen for interfering with a crew member but testified they did that to put it behind them.
