That "cone" is getting smaller and smaller

From the NHC:

THE INTENSITY
FORECAST IS INCREASED OVER THE PREVIOUS FORECAST IN BEST AGREEMENT
WITH THE GFDL. HOWEVER...IT WOULD BE NO SURPRISE IF RAPID
INTENSIFICATION OCCURRED AND GUSTAV BECAME A CATEGORY 4 OR 5
HURRICANE BY 72 HR.

VISIBLE IMAGERY HAS OCCASIONALLY REVEALED AN EYE TRYING TO
FORM...BUT THAT FEATURE HAS NOT BEEN PERSISTENT.
NEVERTHELESS...THE CYCLONE CONTINUES TO INCREASE IN
ORGANIZATION...WITH SOLID CONVECTIVE BANDS AND UPPER-LEVEL OUTFLOW
THAT IS WELL-DEVELOPED IN ALL QUADRANTS. THE UNDERLYING WATERS OF
THE NORTHWESTERN CARIBBEAN SEA ARE QUITE WARM...AND TO SOME DEPTH
BENEATH THE SURFACE...SO THERE ARE NO APPARENT IMPEDIMENTS TO
ADDITIONAL STRENGTHENING BEFORE GUSTAV REACHES WESTERN CUBA. EVEN
RAPID INTENSIFICATION IS POSSIBLE...AS SUPPORTED BY THE LATEST
SHIPS-BASED RAPID INTENSIFICATION INDEX THAT SHOWS A 35 PERCENT
CHANCE OF AN INTENSITY INCREASE OF 30 KT OR MORE DURING THE NEXT 24
HOURS...SO IT IS POSSIBLE THAT GUSTAV COULD REACH MAJOR HURRICANE
STATUS PRIOR TO CROSSING WESTERN CUBA. PASSAGE OVER CUBA WILL NOT
LIKELY HAVE MUCH IMPACT ON THE STORM'S STRENGTH...AND ALL GUIDANCE
FORECASTS A STRENGTHENING TREND OVER THE SOUTHERN GULF...WITH
SLIGHT WEAKENING POSSIBLE IN THE NORTHERN GULF. THE OFFICIAL
FORECAST AGAIN CALLS FOR A MAJOR HURRICANE OVER THE GULF...AND
DESPITE THE WEAKENING IMPLIED BY THE LESSER INTENSITY OVER LAND AT
96 HOURS...GUSTAV COULD MAKE FINAL LANDFALL ALONG SOME PORTION OF
THE NORTHERN GULF COAST AS A MAJOR HURRICANE.

GUSTAV HAS TURNED MORE TO THE RIGHT AND SPED UP A LITTLE...NOW
MOVING AT ABOUT 305/10...AS IT HEADS FOR A BREAK IN THE SUBTROPICAL
RIDGE OVER THE EASTERN GULF OF MEXICO. THE PORTION OF THAT RIDGE
THAT IS INTACT OVER THE SOUTHERN PLAINS OF THE UNITED STATES IS
FORECAST BY ALL MODELS TO EVOLVE INTO A DEEP-LAYER HIGH THAT WILL
REACH THE NORTHEASTERN U.S. IN A FEW DAYS. THERE ARE IMPORTANT
DIFFERENCES AMONG THE MODELS...HOWEVER...IN HOW MUCH RIDGING WILL
EXTEND SOUTHWESTWARD FROM THAT HIGH TOWARD TEXAS...AND IN HOW STRONG
THE UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH CURRENTLY OVER THE CENTRAL GULF WILL BE OVER
THE WESTERN GULF IN A FEW DAYS. THESE VARYING SOLUTIONS LEAD TO
DIFFERENT TRACKS FOR GUSTAV OVER THE NORTHERN GULF. MODELS WITH
THE RIDGE EXTENSION AND A STRONGER UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH WEST OF
GUSTAV...SUCH AS THE NOGAPS AND UKMET...FORECAST GUSTAV TO TURN
WESTWARD TOWARD TEXAS. OTHERS INCLUDING THE GFS...GFDL...AND
HWRF...DO NOT SHOW THE RIDGE EXTENSION NOR A STRONG UPPER-LEVEL
TROUGH...AND FORECAST GUSTAV TO BE PULLED INTO THE NORTHERN GULF
COAST FARTHER EAST. THE NEW OFFICIAL FORECAST LEANS TOWARD THE
LATTER SOLUTIONS AND IS EAST OF THE CONSENSUS...AND REPRESENTS NO
SIGNIFICANT CHANGE TO THE PREVIOUS ADVISORY. DUE TO THE NOTABLE
MODEL SPREAD LATE IN THE FORECAST PERIOD...IT IS ONCE AGAIN
IMPORTANT TO RESTATE THAT IT IS SIMPLY NOT YET POSSIBLE TO
DETERMINE EXACTLY WHERE AND WHEN GUSTAV WILL MAKE FINAL LANDFALL.

New Orleans evacuations begin as Gustav menaces

Published - Aug 30 2008 01:38PM EDT | AP

Forecasters say Gustav has strengthened to a Category 4 storm and has maximum sustained winds of near 145 mph.

The National Hurricane Center on Saturday called Gustav an "extremely dangerous" storm. The increase in the storm's intensity comes as people line up for buses to take them out of New Orleans. Traffic is also heavier on main highways out of the city as residents head north.

New Orleans has yet to call for a mandatory evacuation, but began ushering out the sick, elderly and those without their own transportation.

You need to be scared," Nagin said. "You need to be concerned, and you need to get your butts moving out of New Orleans right now."

Oh Lord, help these people.

I hope everyone is taking this warning seriously and that they're able to evacuate those who aren't able to get out. I know they had buses evacuating, I just hope they reach everyone. .

They have all been given ample time to evacuate. I hope lessons were learned from Katrina.

HURRICANE GUSTAV VIDEOS

Sunday August 31, 2008

Time is running out for New Orleans residents to flee the approach of deadly Hurricane Gustav, which is tipped to gain power before slamming into the US coast.

Mayor Ray Nagin has ordered the compulsory evacuation of the city to begin at 8am local time (2pm BST) as the "storm of the century" churns around in the Gulf of Mexico.
It is almost three years to the day since Hurricane Katrina swept through the birthplace of jazz, killing hundreds and exposing deep poverty and lack of preparation.
Fox correspondent Marianne Silber said billions of dollars of repair work has been left undone and authorities are worried about the damage Gustav could do.

"The forecasters are saying this is going to be worse than anything they have ever seen and they absolutely do not want people taking chances," she said.
Highways around New Orleans are jammed and hundreds of people having been lining up to board buses as authorities urge residents to get out before the storm gets any closer.

Sky News weather presenter Lucy Verasamy said: "This hurricane won't just affect New Orleans - but that city still hasn't recovered from Katrina and the levees will never be able to take Gustav's storm surge of over 20ft. No way."

After passing over Cuba, Gustav lost some power and dropped to Category 3 - but the fierce storm is now back over the warm Gulf waters where it will pick up strength again, possibly reaching a catastrophic Category 5.

With such a wide base, Gustav is expected to affect areas up to 70 miles from the eye, spawining tornadoes in Florida, lashing many areas with rain and causing landslides.

No deaths have been reported from Cuba, where buildings were damaged and banana plantations ripped up. On the Isle of Youth 40 miles off the coast, news reports said boats had been washed into the city of Nueva Gerona.
Some 81 people have already lost their lives in Hurricane Gustav, which triggered floods and landslides in other Caribbean nations.

Energy companies have shut down three-quarters of oil production in the Gulf and are prepared for the strongest storm in three years to hit an area that produces a quarter of US crude and 15% of its natural gas.
Crude oil prices could soar if Tropical Storm Hanna, now in the Atlantic, follows Gustav into the offshore production areas, energy analysts say.

Forecasters are warning that Gustav is likely to approach the Louisiana coast just west of New Orleans as a Category 4 storm on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of hurricane intensity. It is likely to make landfall by late tomorrow or early Tuesday.

Aug. 31 (Bloomberg) -- Hurricane Gustav threatens to hurt U.S. oil and natural-gas production and refining more severely than hurricanes Katrina and Rita did three years ago.

Gustav, downgraded to a Category 3 storm by the National Hurricane Center in Miami this morning, may strengthen to Category 4 later today and will make landfall as a ``major'' hurricane. The storm shut three-quarters of oil output in the region and refineries operated by Valero Energy Corp., the largest U.S. refiner, ConocoPhillips, Marathon Oil Corp. and Exxon Mobil Corp. There will be a special trading session today at the New York Mercantile Exchange.

``This storm will prove to be a worst-case scenario for the production region,'' Jim Rouiller, senior energy meteorologist for Planalytics.com, said yesterday in an e-mailed message. ``This storm will be more dangerous than Katrina.''
