Hanna threatens Florida
South Florida Sun Sentinel
September 2, 2008
FT. LAUDERDALE — After quickly strengthening into a Category 1 hurricane near the southern Bahamas on Monday, Hanna was forecast to curve uncomfortably close to South Florida by late Wednesday or Thursday.
"It's not very far from us," said hurricane specialist Dan Brown of the National Hurricane Center in Miami-Dade County.
Under the latest projections, Hanna would angle through the Bahamas over the next two days.
The storm was forecast to grow into a Category 2 hurricane with winds of about 100 m.p.h. by the time it pulls east of Miami. If the forecast holds, Hanna's core would remain about 200 miles east of Miami and about 150 miles east of West Palm Beach.
Ultimately, Hanna, which is expected to make landfall by Friday, is expected to also reach Georgia or the Carolinas.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Ike, the season's ninth named storm, formed in the central Atlantic on Monday. It was initially forecast to grow into a hurricane and march west over the next five days toward the Bahamas. On Monday evening, it was 1,300 miles east of the Leeward Islands.
