OT Tx/Al manhunt

Attention Texas and Alabama residents - have you seen this man;

He is Nai Yin Xue, 53, accused of killing his wife Anan Liu, 27, and leaving her body in the trunk of the family car in Auckland, New Zealand; and the abandonment of his three-year-old daughter at Southern Cross railway station in Melbourne, Australia.

He is known to have boarded a flight to Los Angeles on September 15 and was spotted in the Houston area in October, but may also be hiding in Alabama.

He may be driving a 1996 blue Ford Thunderbird with Texas plates W56KCK.

He is a martial arts instructor and anyone sighting him or the vehicle should not approach but call police.

Sincere thanks to bin#29 for the sighting update. This would confirm that he seems to be hanging out along this southern coast region.

It is highly likely that he is following Mao's dictim and "swimming with the fishes" and using local Chinese communities as a cover.

It is unlikely that he has any real US documentation, so he may be surviving by obtaining casual work where not too many questions will be asked. He ran a printing business in the Chinese community in Auckland, and was a martial arts instructor, so they are possibilities.

After the crime a number of associates, clients, and dissatisfied former students came forward and painted a picture of a man who is fairly arrogant and unpopular, and over-estimates his ability in the martial arts, promoting his own form as superior to all other forms but without justification.

As a long-term resident of NZ he may now speak both Chinese and English with a characteristic NZ accent where the short "e" is pronounced as "ah" (six as sux, pissed as pahssed).

He has particular skills with sword work and may be teaching martial arts to non-Chinese speaking students where his accent would pass unnoticed.

He is also known to fancy himself as something of a gourmand of Chinese food, and to select an "authentic" Chinese restaurant and stick with it, with a particular taste for dumplings.

-
His cynical abandonment of his three-year-old daughter on Melbourne's Southern Cross interstate railway station was caught on video and caused considerable shock here, and it is thought that she may have witnessed the murder of her mother.

Unable to identify herself, Qian Xun Xue - dubbed "Pumpkin" after a label in her clothing - was the subject of intense police and media efforts to identify her focussing on the considerable Chinese community in Victoria, but was only identified after the body of his wife was found in the trunk of his car and her car found at Auckland airport, moving the focus of the search to Melbourne, Australia.

He was then quickly traced to a flight to LA, but had already landed there and gone to ground in the local Chinese community.

His daughter is now in the care of her maternal grandparents in China who she had had previous contact with, and who are apparently fairly well off.

If you think Aruban police dropped the ball, NZ police had very red faces when they finally found the body of Anan Liu in the trunk of his car, with logo's for his printing business, parked right outside the family home they had been searching for two days.

Trap set for fugitive Nai Yin Xue
Saturday, 23 February 2008 (12 hours ago)
...
The last confirmed sighting of Xue was 10 days ago in the city of Mobile, Alabama, where he introduced himself to unsuspecting residents as "Peter Chung".

US authorities from Texas to the US east coast are on the lookout for Xue and his distinctive blue 1996 Thunderbird.
...
Chinese restaurants and martial arts studios, where Xue is believed to seek assistance when he stops in a new town, have also been alerted in Texas, Alabama and Mississippi.

"As far as we know, he's pretty destitute right now," Commander Tom Hession, head of the Los Angeles US Marshals unit leading the hunt for Xue, told AAP today.
...
"The investigation has led us to the Houston and Gulf Coast area of the US, including Biloxi, Mississippi, and Mobile, Alabama," Hession said.

"He's been spotted in those areas.

"We have confirmed the sightings he has spent time there the last couple months and we're letting the public know through some press releases and media requests to be on the lookout."

US authorities believe Xue is short of cash.

He survived the past five months by befriending unsuspecting locals in Texas, Mississippi and Alabama and depending on their generosity for food and accommodation.

As well as the alias Peter Chung, Xue is known to use the names Peter Tzang, David Wang, Jieh Tzang and Michael Xue.

He is still thought to be driving a 1996 blue Ford Thunderbird, number plate, W56KCK. It would seem to only be a matter of time now.

Tied up with trousers: Michael Xue after his arrest in Atlanta (WXIA TV)

Victoria Police want to extradite murder suspect Michael Xue from the US so he can face charges over the dumping of his daughter at a Melbourne railway station.

Xue was captured in Atlanta, Georgia this morning after local Chinese-American residents of an apartment block overpowered him and tied him up with his own trousers.
...
A Victoria Police spokeswoman says Xue is facing several charges over abandoning the girl.

But New Zealand authorities will have priority for his extradition as they seek to question him over his wife's death.

Pumpkin's dad arrested in Atlanta
February 29, 2008 - 11:36AM

New Zealand fugitive Nai Yin Xue was forced to the ground and tied up with his own clothes in a dramatic citizens' arrest in the United States.

Xue was subdued and tied up by members of the Chinese American community in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia, after they recognised his picture in a local Chinese newspaper.
...
US Marshals chief Tom Hession said Xue had befriended people at an apartment in the Atlanta suburb of Chamblee in recent days.

But when his new friends saw media stories about the fugitive, they took the law into their own hands, added Marc Johnson, the chief of police in Chamblee.

A group of six at the apartment complex tied Xue's legs up with his trousers and bound his hands with his belt while they waited for police to arrive.

By the time officers arrived, they were sitting on Xue, whose trousers were pulled down around his ankles, police said.
...
At first, Xue denied he was the fugitive in the press reports, but police discovered he had his New Zealand driver's licence in his wallet.

Marc Johnson, the chief of police from Chamblee, said police received a call from a local apartment complex where six people recognised Xue from a picture in a local Chinese newspaper.

Xue had shaved his head in an attempt to throw US authorities and unsuspecting locals off his trail.
...
New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark said Xue's capture was important to communities in her country.

Clark thanked both New Zealand and American authorities for their efforts in apprehending Xue.

"This is very, very important news for the family and for our communities here in New Zealand. The killing shocked our country. It left a child an orphan and it is just so important that this man has been apprehended," Clark told Radio New Zealand.

Cornered Xue gave police no resistance

...
They sat on him, tied his hands behind his back with his belt and pulled his trousers down to his ankles and knotted them so he could not run off, before calling police.

Chamblee assistant police chief Mark Bender told NZPA: "We responded to a 911 call to a possible wanted person and found him being restrained by six of his fellow countrymen."
...
Mr Bender said Xue gave police several names before his New Zealand driver's licence was found.

"He was at first denying that it was him and gave our police officers several different names.

"They decided to arrest him based on that and when they searched him they found his New Zealand driver's licence in his wallet with his real name in it."

He said when police checked his name on the computer "that's when all the bells and whistles started going off".

Ed Miller from America's Most Wanted told Newstalk ZB Xue's arrest showed how touched people were by the plight of his daughter Qian Xun Xue.

"The sight of that poor little girl abandoned on that train platform I think touched people's hearts - so that's why they were looking for him," Mr Miller said.

That is good news and such a horrible story but I think that the little girl is back in China with her grandparents, and now that he has been apprehended, I will move this into the appropriate forum.

Xue fronts NZ court over wife's murder

A court in Auckland is deciding whether a man who abandoned his three-year-old daughter at a Melbourne train station last year should stand trial for the murder of his wife.

Xue is charged with killing his wife in Auckland and dumping her body in the boot of the family car.

He was captured in the United States in February after five months on the run and was deported to New Zealand.

positions hearing the prosecution has alleged that Michael Xue strangled his wife with his own tie, then fled to Melbourne where he abandoned his young daughter on a platform at Southern Cross train station.

The court heard the woman's death followed months of domestic violence.

Crown Prosecutor Brian Dickie told the court Xue had subjected his 27-year-old wife to months of domestic violence.

"[He] effectively sought to break into the house armed with an axe to do harm to Ms Liu, his wife," he said.

Xue showed no emotion in the District court as an interpreter translated proceedings and Mr Dickie said the accused was keeping very quiet.

"The defendant has elected to remain silent when interviewed by the police about these matters," Mr Dickie said.

The prosecution will call witnesses tomorrow.

His daughter now lives in China with her maternal grandmother.
