Josephine Frenna-Missing Florida Mom

Missing Florida Mom Reportedly Feared 'Violent' Husband
Saturday, August 23, 2008

A woman in South Florida who had sought a restraining order against her husband disappeared Thursday, the Miami Herald reported.

Josephine Frenna, 51, who recently moved from Canada, previously told a Broward County judge that she and her son were "affraid for our life" because her estranged husband, Gerardo Di Marco, is "violent" and "dangerous," the Herald reported.

Di Marco filed for divorce last week, and Frenna was scheduled to be in court Friday for a hearing on the restraining order against him.

Frenna’s 14-year-old son became suspicious Thursday when he returned from school to find his mother’s car, purse and cell phone, but no trace of her. Police have searched nearby apartments, hospitals, jails and airlines with no luck.

Frenna’s family and friends have been interviewed as well. De Marco was located Friday by Fort Lauderdale police and has been cooperative, police told the Herald.

Frenna’s restraining order request claimed her husband had broken through doors with an ax and changed the locks on their home, as well as threatened to throw her off the couple’s balcony.

Di Marco had indicated he planned to leave Florida and was seeking joint custody of the couple’s son. He tried to get a court order barring Frenna from selling their assets and was named the beneficiary of her life insurance policy, the Herald reported.

Di Marco’s attorney, Marc Shelowitzm, told the Miami Herald on Friday he was shocked to hear Frenna was missing.

Missing Lauderdale wife was seeking restraining order
A Canadian transplant to South Florida has disappeared, leaving behind her car, her cellphone and her estranged husband.

Not long after she moved to South Florida from Montreal, Josephine Frenna became so fearful of her husband that she went to a Broward judge to keep him away from her.

''Me and my son are afraid for our life,'' Frenna told the court. ``He is violent . . . He is dangerous.''

A month later, Frenna, 51, has vanished. She disappeared Thursday -- a day before a hearing to consider her request for a restraining order against her estranged 58-year-old husband Gerardo Di Marco. He filed for divorce last week.

Early Friday morning, Fort Lauderdale police located Di Marco and he was being cooperative, said Detective Kathy Collins, a Fort Lauderdale Police spokeswoman.

Late Friday, authorities sought the community's help in finding Frenna, who was not home Thursday afternoon when her 14-year-old son returned from school.

The normally fastidious Frenna left behind her car, her purse and her cellphone, according to family and friends, who said that she would call family four or five times on most days.

''Nobody heard from her all day [Thursday], which was out of her character,'' said Steve Stabile, a family friend. ``She isn't the type of people to go anywhere alone.''

Officers searched nearby apartments and spoke with Frenna's family and friends, according to police. Authorities have also checked local hospitals, jails and airlines.

In the restraining order filed July 14, Frenna claimed Di Marco had broken through doors with an ax and also changed locks to their home so she and her son could not enter.

''He is a threat to me and my son and my son does not want to go with him,'' wrote Frenna in the domestic violance injunction filed in court.

Included in the injunction: photos of a door missing a chunk of wood near the knob, which could be the axed door that Frenna referred to. Frenna labeled the photo ``HORROR.''

Frenna also claimed Di Marco threatened to throw her off the couple's balcony and physically grabbed her and ``started screaming, cursing at me and calling me names.''

A month later, Di Marco filed for divorce. The Canadian couple reportedly moved to South Florida within the last year.

Di Marco indicated he planned to leave Florida and was seeking joint custody of the boy. He sought a court order barring Frenna from selling their assets, and he was named the beneficiary of Frenna's life insurance policy.

Di Marco's divorce attorney, Marc Shelowitzm said he had spoken to his client a few days ago to discuss the divorce, but did not know Frenna was missing when contacted on Friday.

''I am shocked to hear that,'' he said.

Investigators ask anyone with information to call Fort Lauderdale police at 954-828-5700 or Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).

Florida Mom's Drowning May Be Accidental
Thursday, August 28, 2008

New details suggest the 51-year-old Florida mother found in the Atlantic Ocean three days after she was reported missing may have accidentally drowned, the Miami Herald reported Thursday.

A nearby condo building worker turned over a beach bag Wednesday belonging to Josephine Frenna, 51, that contained her shoes, a towel and keys to her condo, according to the newspaper. The worker reportedly found the bag while she was cleaning up beach chairs over the weekend.

The medical examiner ruled that Frenna drowned without any signs of a struggle, but detectives said they weren't ruling anything out yet, and those close to her worry that something sinister happened, pointing to the fact that she didn't like to swim.

"Josephine wasn't a water person," family friend Steve Stabile told the Herald. "She wasn't one to go swimming on the beach. She hated the sand. She wouldn't even put a toe in the swimming pool."

Ft. Lauderdale police have said they're investigating any and all possibilities.

Frenna disappeared a week ago, the day before a court hearing on a restraining order against her estranged husband, a man she described in court documents as violent and dangerous.

She was last seen after walking her 14-year-old son to a bus stop near their condominium. All her personal belongings, including her keys, wallet and credit cards, were still inside, and her car was parked out front.

Detectives searched for Frenna for days. On Sunday, the U.S. Coast Guard found a woman's body floating in the ocean. Investigators used dental records Tuesday to identify the dead woman as Frenna.

Police have questioned Frenna's husband, Gerardo Di Marco. They say he has been cooperative, and he has not been identified as a suspect in his wife's death

It sounds to me that her husband should certainly be named as a suspect in her drowning!
