Murder case Marlies seems solved
22 Okt, 2008, 09:07 (GMT -04:00)
WILLEMSTAD – The murder of Marlies van der Kouwe seems to be solved. Suspect Ryan P. has confessed that he has strangled Marlies, said P.’s mother today.
The 27-year old man said that he wanted to steal Marlies’ bag, but when the victim put up a fight and grabbed her attacker by the throat, he strangled her. The mother says that her son made a confession before the police in the presence of his lawyer and her. P. had also told the police that he had strangled Marlies at the location where he had pulled her off her bike. He then transported the body with a motorbike to the place where the 24-year old pharmacist-assistant was found late last week. His mother says that Ryan is remorseful of what happened.
The victim disappeared in the night of Saturday, September 20 to Sunday, September 21. She was pulled off her bicycle on her way home. Her remains were finally found in the mondi (woods) behind the Amboina neighbourhood last Friday. Ryan P., who was suspected of kidnapping then and murder now, is in custody since four weeks ago. He was transferred to the Bon Futuro-prison in Curacao after Marlies’ remains were found. He was flown back to Bonaire yesterday evening under strict police escort.
To get more clarity in the case, the police took him to the place where Marlies was found on Friday. Several media reported that where the skull and some bones were found on Friday is not far from where the rest of the remains were found. The suspect is not allowed visitors, with the exception of his lawyer and the investigation team. Such measure is taken to make sure that the suspect cannot frustrate the investigation by for example influencing witnesses, said the ANP.
"Half-truths and whole lies about Marlies'
By PETER DE KNEGT
KRALENDIJK / BONAIRE - Bonaire Officer Prosecutor David van Delft on Thursday has confirmed that Ryan P. (27) the kidnapping and death of Marlies van der Kouw last Monday has known.
From Delft wild, in the interest of the 'care' of the investigation in no way address the way that Marlies is killed, in what spot on the island and whether they would be raped or assaulted by P.
,, We know very much, but the investigation is not yet ready. What the suspect says is probably not what we know. We still have a lot of things that we examine not want to share with the outside world. In Bonaire, you can do without that little seen.''
Van Delft also stressed that the two suspects still in restrictions sit all alone and therefore may talk with their lawyers. , Who is also the case for us. For example, if I would talk about the cause of death, I violate the restriction. I would not say where and when it is deceased, nor talk about a possible cooperation, in others. I would like to tell what I know, and that is very much, both to the press as to the parents and family, but that can not now.''
The OM is also concerned that any findings yet to hear witnesses could influence. ,, That would harm the investigation.''
Whether there is a sexual offenses, according to Van Delft ultimately be determined by the pathologist anatomist of the NFI in Rijswijk. , Who is going to investigate.''The body of Marlies will soon be flown to the Netherlands.
On the messages in the media following the rulings of the mother of Ryan Van Delft also wanted to go. Mother Pietersz said after a conversation with her son last Tuesday that her son Marlies of the bag and had wanted to rob her by her boggle had strangled. ,, I see a tension between certain interests. There are the last days half-truths and whole inaccuracies told, but ask the press to wait. We are not ready. Give us time. We want the peaceful and good finish''said Van Delft
Ryans' lawyer, Margarete Domingo, may also after the press conference Thursday still does not respond to the statements of police and justice on the circumstances of the murder of Marlies. 'In the first instance, the limitations of my client off. The Public Ministry has informed me today, however, that only happens when the investigation is completed. I estimate only about a week,''said Domingo against AD.
Thursday is also the anniversary on Bonaire trip for Marlies held. The trip, which the inhabitants of Bonaire were summoned to walk, began at half past five (in the Netherlands 23:30) and ended at the factory where Marlies in the night of Sept. 20 disappeared.
The Prosecutor does not want to comment on the findings on the death of Marlies. “What the suspect is telling us may not necessarily be what we know”.
PETER DE KNEGT –KRALENDIJK/BONAIRE – Prosecutor on Bonaire David van Delft confirmed this afternoon that Ryan P. (27) confessed last Monday the kidnapping and murder of Marlies van der Kouwe. Van Delft did not want to comment – and in that way jeopardize the investigation- in any way on questions how Marlies was murdered, on which place that would have been and if she was raped by P. “We know a lot, but the investigation is still ongoing. We still have a lot to investigate and therefore do not want to share information with the media. On Bonaire there is little that can be done without being noticed.” Van Delft emphasized that both suspects are in custody with full restrictions and are only allowed to talk to their lawyers. “These restrictions are also applicable for the police. If I for instance would elaborate on the cause of death, I would violate these restrictions. I do not want to share information where and when she died, or on a possible cooperation with other suspects. Believe me, I would very much want to share with you what I know now, and that is a lot. Not only to you the press, but also to the family and relatives, but that is absolutely not possible right now.”
The Public attorney’s office is concerned that possible findings might influence witnesses that still need to be heard. “That would damage the investigation.”
I fit was a rape crime is something –according to van Delft- the pathologist of the Dutch forensic institute in Rijswijk (the Netherlands) will have to determine. . “They will investigate this.” The body of Marlies will be transported to the Netherlands in the days to follow.
On messages in the media –due to the statements of the mother of the suspect-, van Delft refused to comment. The mother of Ryan told that –after she had spoken to her son last Tuesday- her son intended to rob the bag of Marlies, ended up in a struggle and strangled her. Van Delft: “There is a tension between certain interests. The last few days, half-truths and pertinent untrue stories have been told, but I ask the press to wait. We are not done. Give us time. We want to finalize this properly and orderly.”
Ryan’s lawyer, Marga Domingo is also not allowed to respond on comments by the justice department or the police about the murder case. “They intended to release the restrictive regime for my client, but the justice department has notified me today that this will only happen if the investigation is finished.” It is my estimate that that will happen next week.” Said Domingo to the Algemeen Dagblad.
Today on Bonaire a memorial service and silent march was held for Marlies. The march, of which the Bonarians were called to participate, started at 5.30 local time and ended at the factory where Marlies disappeared in the night of the 20th of September. The parents of Marlies held a speech during the service.

Lily, the mother of Marlies van der Kouwe, hold together with Nienke, the sister of Marlies, a speech at the memorial service.
KRALENDIJK - Family and hundreds Bonaireanen have Thursday Marlies van der Kouwe in an impressive meeting and silent march commemorated. The family cherishes no resentment towards the island.
A half hour before the doors open Jeugdhuis Young Bonaire, is already a long line outside waiting. Many people can not get space in the room, they follow the memorial service through the open windows. Local radio stations broadcast the meeting with speeches, songs and prayer live.
Lily, the mother of Marlies van der Kouwe, the 24-year-old apothekersassistente a few weeks ago was killed on Bonaire, enter the first floor. Moved she tells about the childhood of her eldest daughter that she spent on Bonaire, because her father was a doctor there.
Bonaire''was always in her thoughts. "When Marlies after a failed relationship again single was, she decided to move to Bonaire. Mike, one of the friends with whom she was with on the eve of her abduction, believes that he and the other boy from the group of friends have failed.''As men we had have to protect you. "
Father Jan Willem tells about the nightmare in which the family since the disappearance of Marlies got into. Anger, disbelief and intense grief, but also relieved when last week after four weeks Marlies was finally found.
The Natalee Holloway scenario played the family to the head constant.
''Our biggest fear was that we could not take her back home , "said the father, who called the discovery of the body of his daughter" under these circumstances, was the greatest gift. He speaks to praise the police and the people he in their local language, Papiamento, thanks for their support.
Many Bonaireanen get stirred by the ruling of Jan Willem van der Kouwe that the family feels no resentment towards the island. Because it is for the people still difficult to contain that the perpetrators are local boys.
If the perpetrators came from elsewhere, then the whole drama was easier to process, many find. But the murder of the Dutch has the carefully cherished idyll that Bonaire is a quiet and friendly island where never something happens, shattered. ''God has left this island, "says an older man after the memorial service with tears in his eyes.
A little later an even larger crowd gathers for a silent march to the place at the Water and Electricity Company where Marlies by Ryan P. was pulled from her bicycle. Young, old, black and white people walking with candles, lights and flowers. The family and dignitaries, such as the Antillean Minister of Justice going on frond. In the distance a police car with blue lights marks the place where Marlies is found. On a tree at eye level is a photograph of the woman, a choir sang religious songs in Papiamento, each family member lay dawn a rose here, deep stirred.
The pastor who also led the memorial service, is there for a prayer.
Soon the family is flying back to the Netherlands. Marlies was a girl of Bonaire and was on the island of her youth, until her end. According to her father the circle of life of his daughter it closed for good.

Waiting for the service:
Some more pictures, now from the memorial service, yesterday. Sorry for the poor quality, I didn't want to use the flash during the service.
In the youth home, some 500 people inside, another 500 following the service outside:
Mother and sister of Marlies. The mother recited a poem, in which she told about the first steps of Marlies on the Bonairean beaches:
The sister and a friend of Marlies told about their lives with her:
A friend of Marlies (on Bonaire)was telling his regrets, that he had let her go home on her bike that evening, when she said that she didn't want to be braught home, he should have been more persistant.
The father made a nice speech, in which he said his thanks towards the police for doing such good job, and to the Bonairean population for their help. Partially in Papiamentu:
After the service, in the Youthome, we went to the roundabout in Hato, to start the silent walk.

I forgot to tell that our Governer (Mr. Domocasse) also held a speech, no succesfull picture made.
Waiting at the roundabout in Hato, for the family to come and to start the silent walk:
The silent walk, I tried to find out how many people were doing that walk. I think somewhere between 2000 and 4000 people were attending. About 25% were coloured people, some 75% were white people. The beginning of the procession was near to the destination, when the end of the procession just had left the starting point:
On the site where Marlies was kidnapped there were some pictures on a tree (near WEB), family halted there and prayed, and songs were sung in Papiamentu:
Parents and several of the people that joined in the silent walk left flowers, candles and papers with the text: "This should never happen agaain!:
It was a very serene service, and impressive silent walk.
Let's really hope this will never happen again, on the island we are proud of.

In Bonaire, two agents dismissed for serious neglect of duty in the case Marlies van der Kouwe. A third employee was given a reprimand. This made the police on the island known Tuesday.
The two police officers of the Corps on Bonaire by the governor dismissed because research showed that the reported abduction not took serious.
Thus the investigation into the disappearance only in motion after 36 hours .
The two serving officers thought it was a quarrel and left the matter to rest. The internal investigation also shows that the security room staff took no further action.

As the father of Marlies, I also want to thank all the contributors for their efforts to bring some clearance in the case of the murder of my daughter. I really was emotionally impressed to read all your sympathetic remarks.
From the very beginning, even before it was separated from the main thread about Natalee, I followed this thread. In contradiction of what was assumed by some members I had a full access to the internet and to my email accounts. By no way we were asked or even influenced by police or government to stay clear of the press or the public. I wish to state here it was our very own decision to stay away from public appearances. Not because we disliked the press or media but because we wanted to mourn in silence.
I want to apologize not having answered some of your mails. I knew you wanted to help us. But I was also aware of what the police was doing on Bonaire and from my knowledge as a forensic doctor (a job I did before I became a general practitioner in Assen) I knew what the the Dutch police was capable of. And I trusted the way they were trying to get the crime solved. But because I didn't want to get involved in discussions I ignored all your mails. (For example discussions about the lost first 36 hours.) My apologies!
I really had a laugh reading we were supposed to be rich. Well, I wish we possess that villa on that aerial photograph. We do not, however! We are a middleclass family and live in the city of Assen in a normal middleclass house. I sure want to know how people came up with this story and with that particular photograph.
At this moment even for us there are a lot of questions unanswered yet. I suppose the police knows a lot more but even last week I heard the forensic report wasn't ready. Maybe strange to you but we didn't want to know all the details about the investigation. As I mentioned before, I know a lot about forensic medicine and by not getting too much information I hoped I could protect myself and my family. Mentally. As you can imagine this was only partially possible.
Sure it was horrible what we had to deal with. But we keep having a warm feeling about the island and the inhabitants of Bonaire. They really helped us in our grief...
I've read a lot of negative remarks about the Dutch Antilles. Some of them did hurt! Because we knew there was an other side of the stories being told here. Of course everyone has his own experiences but I want to ask not being too quick in giving imho biased remarks.
I furthermore can tell that Tuesday 17th of February 2009 R.P will be prosecuted in the court of justice on Bonaire. Than we hope to get all the answers and get the puzzle resolved!

Murder suspect breaks out of Bonaire jail
Published: Sunday 21 December 2008 17:26 UTC
Last updated: Sunday 21 December 2008 20:48 UTC
One of the suspects in the murder of a Dutch woman in Bonaire has escaped from prison along with another inmate. Police said they had sawn the iron bars of a window. Chemist's assistant Marlies van der Kouwe, 24, disappeared in late September from her house on Bonaire. Her body was found a month later at a garbage dump. The main suspect in the case, who has confessed to the murder, is being held at a prison in Curaçao. It is not yet clear how the escaped inmate was exactly involved in the case.
KRALENDIJK (Bonaire) - The family of Marlies of the Kouwe is "incredibly sad" by the news that one of the co-accused killer of Rayan Pieters last weekend from the house detention of Bonaire could escape.
"There was finally some rest and then this," said an excited mother Lily last night. "How on earth is this possible? The man who is the most terrible things with Marlies has extracted, is again at large. We are totally destroyed of. "
Siegmar Marchena, alias' Kucho 'disappeared along with a fellow prisoner through a window, where the bars were sawn from. The duo had in the cell probably have a mobile phone, providing help from the outside could be regulated.
The Dutch prison guards on Bonaire have not discovered the escape. A tip-off called Sunday morning to the house of detention in Bonaire that the rumor was that Kucho had escaped. Only when guards in the cell then went looking they discovered that the two were flown and was beaten great alarm.
"I was afraid this would happen," said Lily Wadners yesterday, the mother of Marlies. "We have lived in the Antilles and there are more escapes. Still, the blow to hardcore. This man must not escape punishment. "
Kucho "is suspected the body of Marlies van der Kouwe set fire to have stabbed and the mortal remains of the girl to have buried. "Moreelsestraat seen as reprehensible as what those Rayan has done," the mother of Marlies thinks. On Bonaire has opened a special telephone number for tips of island residents. The police assumes that the two fugitive criminals still on the island and keep hidden somewhere.
"They have no money, so the chance that they have arranged for a boat to sail elsewhere is not very big," said a police source. "With any help you can Bonaire long on hide." An escaped prisoner earlier this year knew that way half years from the hands of the police to continue.
The prison board abstained from any comment yesterday. The device is for some time under Dutch conductor and is partially guarded by Dutch personnel. Shortly before the escape reopened Minister Hirsch Ballin (Justice) the money restored with Dutch prison.
