Petition Denied To Lessen Drew Peterson's $20 Million Bail
Peterson says an Illinois appeals court has denied a petition to lessen Peterson's $20 million bail.
Attorney Joel Brodsky expressed disappointment in the ruling from the Illinois Third District Appellate Court in a statement late Friday.
Brodsy says there may be another chance to request a reduction in bail. He says what he calls "the weakness of the State's case" will become clear.
Peterson, a former Bolingbrook police officer, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the 2004 death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio, whose body was found in a dry bathtub. Peterson is also a suspect in the disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy.
Will County prosecutors say Peterson offered someone $25,000 to kill Savio, but then did it himself.

Juror parade begins in Peterson murder trial
Attorneys still want trial moved
By Steve Schmadeke
TRIBUNE REPORTER
August 15, 2009
Some 240 potential jurors in the Drew Peterson murder trial were brought into Will County court Friday, asked to fill out questionnaires and ordered by the judge not to view any media reports about the case.
Joel Brodsky, one of Peterson's attorneys, called the move "highly unusual" in that no trial date has been set and the judge has not ruled on a defense motion to move the trial because of intense publicity.
Circuit Judge Stephen White said he was working under the assumption that the trial will be held in Will County and will rule on the issue Oct. 2. He had jurors complete a 10-page, 33-question questionnaire that asked about their news consumption and family background. Jurors were also asked if they knew anyone on a list of 493 people whose names may be mentioned at trial. Police officers or investigators make up as much as a fifth of the list, Peterson attorney Reem Odeh said in court.
The judge introduced the jurors to Peterson, who -- dressed in a gray suit and tie, wearing white socks with dark shoes -- stood and said: "Good day, folks, good day."
A handful of the potential jurors smiled when White informed them of the case they may be hearing.
Peterson, a former Bolingbrook police sergeant, has been indicted in the death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio, and is a suspect in the disappearance of his fourth, Stacy. He denies any involvement in either case.
Odeh argued in court that "negative and inflammatory publicity" about the case along with Peterson's long history as a police officer there meant her client could not get a fair trial in Will County.
"The damage has been done," she said.
State's Atty. James Glasgow said any damage was self-inflicted and that there were other ways to address any prejudice among jurors.
"It has been a concerted effort on their part ... to keep this case in the public eye," he said.
White said he would also hear arguments Oct. 2 on whether a new state hearsay law, which some call "Drew's Law," passes constitutional muster.
