Hugh Hefner files for divorce from wife
Wed Sep 9, 2009 7:49pm EDT
By Jill Serjeant
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner, host to an ever-changing coterie of scantily-clad young women at the Playboy Mansion, has filed for divorce from the estranged wife who many people forgot he had ever married.
Hefner, 83, filed court documents last week seeking to end his marriage to former Playmate Kimberley Conrad, 47, citing irreconcilable differences.
The documents, obtained by celebrity website TMZ.com on Wednesday, said the pair were married in July 1989 and have been separated since January 1998.
Conrad and Hefner have two sons. Since their separation, Conrad and the boys have lived in the house next to the famed Los Angeles Playboy Mansion where Hefner resided with several girlfriends and stars in the TV reality show "The Girls Next Door."
"I am happy to be out of the marriage. I only remained married (to Conrad) for the sake of the children, at her request. I am happy to have this behind me," Hefner told TMZ in a telephone interview on Wednesday.
Hefner's decision to seek a divorce follows court action in August by Conrad, who filed a $5 million lawsuit against the Playboy founder relating to the sale of a house they owned together. Hefner told TMZ.com he owed nothing to Conrad, saying he had been "generous to a fault."
The documents obtained by TMZ.com gave a glimpse into the lifestyle of Hefner, who earlier this year installed 19-year-old twins into the mansion as his girlfriends at the end of the fifth season of "The Girls Next Door."
According to the documents, Hefner has assets of more than $43 million, excluding Playboy stock and property, and spends about $43,000 a month on food and entertainment.
Hefner has asked for spousal support for Conrad to be set at $20,000 a month, saying he has already given his estranged wife close to $12 million since their separation 11 years ago.
Hefner began publishing Playboy magazine in 1953. Profits from the adult entertainment business Playboy Enterprises Inc, which includes TV networks and licensing deals for pink bunny ears, have declined in recent years due to competition from free adult material on the Internet and a drop in advertising revenue.
Playboy Enterprises appointed a new chief executive in June to replace Hefner's daughter Christie, who left after two decades. Hugh Hefner remains editor-in-chief of Playboy magazine and retains overall control of the company.

Chris Evert and Greg Norman have separated after 15 months of marriage, the Associated Press reports.
"We will remain friends and supportive of one another's family," the couple says in a statement released Friday.
The tennis champ and golf legend, both 54, tied the knot in a sunset ceremony in the Bahamas on June 28, 2008 and got engaged in December 2007 in South Africa.
"The marriage is better than I expected," Norman said at the time. "We have a mutual respect for each other, and I love taking her a cup of coffee each morning ... We are compatible and like many of the same things. It is easy to be happy."
Added Evert, "At this stage of our lives, Greg and I are every comfortable with each other."
In addition to spending time with each other, the couple also expressed they were looking forward to a large blended family. (Norman has two children from a previous relationship, and Evert has three sons with ex-husband Andy Mill)
"They all mesh pretty well," Evert told reporters in September 2008.
"We do things separately and also together," Evert said. "We love to bring our kids together to do family things."

Longtime couple Sarandon, Robbins have split
Actors were together for more than two decades
NEW YORK - One of Hollywood's most enduring relationships has ended — Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins have broken up after more than two decades together, PEOPLE has learned exclusively.
"Actress Susan Sarandon and her partner of 23 years, actor Tim Robbins have announced that they separated over the summer," her rep Teal Cannaday tells PEOPLE in a statement. "No further comments will be made."
The couple met on the set of “Bull Durham,” and they have two sons together, Jack, 20, and Miles, 17.
Sarandon, 63, was previously married to Chris Sarandon, whom she met in college. The actress also dated director Franco Amurri in the mid '80s. The two had a daughter, Eva Amurri, in 1985. (Amurri is also an actress; she most recently appeared in Showtime's “Californication”).
Sarandon and Robbins, 51, were admired for their long relationship in the face of the pressures of show business, their much-discussed age difference — he's 12 years younger — and that they never married.
"I won’t marry because I am too afraid of taking him for granted or him taking me for granted — maybe it will be a good excuse for a party when I am 80," Sarandon has said in the past.
Both famous liberal activists, they have never been too political at home with their children. "I’ve never tried to force [politics] on them,” the actress tells Psychologies magazine in its January issue, but adds that the election of President Barack Obama “got them excited.”
The family all attended the inauguration in January, though Sarandon insists "our dinner table conversations are rarely political."

Noah Wyle Separates from Wife
By Elizabeth Leonard
Friday January 15, 2010 12:00 PM EST
Noah Wyle
Noah Wyle and his wife, Tracy, have separated after 11 years of marriage, the actor's rep tells PEOPLE.
"Tracy Wyle and Noah Wyle, who separated in late October 2009, have confirmed they have entered into a mediation process," rep Eddie Michaels announced in a statement on the couple's behalf. "Neither has legally filed for divorce. Tracy and Noah live in separate residences; however their two children (Owen, 7, and Auden, 4) see both parents daily."
Wyle, best known as John Carter from NBC's hit ER, married makeup artist Tracy Warbin in 1998 after the couple met on the set of Myth of Fingerprints.
Says a friend of the couple: "They're cooperative with each other and have put the interests of their children ahead of anything else."
Wyle recently wrapped a TNT pilot for a sci-fi show, co-produced by Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks Television

Brangelina split
Golden couple Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie sign contract to split £205m fortune
HOLLYWOOD golden pair Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have seen DIVORCE lawyers and signed a £205 million split deal, we can reveal.
The world's most famous couple legally agreed how to divide their fortune and who gets custody of their six kids.
The megastars have agreed to equally divide their vast fortune - and to SHARE their six children.
Dynamite legal papers secretly signed by the couple this month detail how all their homes and assets will be carved up.
The agreement gives them joint custody of the kids - but all six will actually live full-time with their mum.
Preparations for a split began in early December when "Brangelina" visited a top Los Angeles divorce firm to begin thrashing out the deal.
An announcement of their separation is expected to be made soon - ending months of speculation that the five-year relationship is on the rocks.
A source told the News of the World: "The document was signed in early January. Both Brad and Angelina had signed it.
"The contract was like a tailor-made version of a pre-nuptial agreement except for an unmarried couple's split.
"It seemed clear they want the world to know they'll both play a part in the upbringing of the children.
"But Angelina will actually be the one who lives with them full-time."
The divorce lawyer they consulted is based in Beverly Hills and has worked on a string of celeb divorces and splits. He is widely regarded as "the best in the business".
Our source added: "There's no date for when the contract would come into effect.
"But the paperwork is already organised for a break- up - and for it to be as unmessy for them as possible. It is clear it's a case of when they break up rather than if."
The troubled couple have not been photographed together in public in recent days. On Friday night, Brad, 46, was snapped backstage at the Hope For Haiti concert in Los Angeles without Angelina, 34.
His ex-wife Jennifer Aniston was there - although not with him.
"Brangelina" fell for each other when they played a warring couple in Mr and Mrs Smith in 2004. They have three adopted children (Maddox, eight, Pax, six, and Zahara, five), and three biological kids (Shiloh, three, and 17- month-old twins Knox and Vivienne).
Both stars have been through high- profile splits before. Brad shocked the world when he split from Hollywood golden girl Jennifer, 40, in January 2005. They had been married for 4½ years.
He was first photographed with Oscar-winner Angelina three months after the split. Before Jen, he was engaged to actress Gwyneth Paltrow.
Jolie has been divorced twice - from Monster's Ball star Billy Bob Thornton in 2003, and Trainspotting actor Johnny Lee Miller in 1999.
Her joint fortune with Brad of $322 million (£205 million) includes mansions in France, California and New Orleans. But rumours have been circulating for months that the couple's relationship is doomed.
Last week they failed to show at the Golden Globe Awards even though Brad's film Inglourious Basterds was up for a several gongs.
Instead he went to watch the American football team New Orleans Saints, while Changeling star Angelina stayed in California. Also last week, Pitt bought the mansion next door to the family's LA home for £800,000.
His pals Guy Ritchie and wife Madonna famously bought their next-door pad in London before their split so they could share living space with their kids but keep away from each another.
Earlier this month, Angelina was snapped looking tense with an unsmiling Brad in New York.
And last month she said fidelity was over-rated - and if she or Brad had an affair it would not be a problem.
She told German magazine Das Neue: "Neither Brad nor I have ever claimed that living together means to be chained together. We make sure that we never restrict each other.
"I doubt that fidelity is absolutely essential for a relationship. It's worse to leave your partner and talk badly about him afterwards."
Angelina, whose new film Salt is due in British cinemas this summer, also said: "The sparks fly at home if the nice Brad fails to see that he's wrong and reacts in a defiant way.
"Then I can get so angry that I tear his shirt."
Also this month, best-selling American biographer Ian Halperin released a revelation- packed insight into the Jolie- Pitt relationship.
He said when the couple first met they had 20-HOUR sex sessions.
In his book Brangelina: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Ian writes: "Brad had never had such incredible sex.
"My sources say that they sometimes spent 18 to 20 hours a day in bed. But sex eventually wears off.
"She has brought a lot of good things to him - the children, for example.
"But he didn't know what he was getting into, and that's why I think they're going to split."
We asked Brad, Angelina and the legal firm for their comments but they did not respond.

While reports are swirling that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are headed for a split, multiple sources close to the family tell PEOPLE that the rumors are false.

Brangelina Sues "News Of The World" Over Split Claim.
Brad Pitt, 46, and Angelina Jolie, 34, who earlier in a statement threatened legal action against media services falsely spreading break-up rumors, have followed through on their threat. Their lawyer confirmed a lawsuit against "The News Of The World" is in the works.
Keith Schillings, of London-based Schillings lawyers, said in a statement that the couple had begun legal proceedings against the News of The World tabloid. News of the World is a Sunday publication as well as Britain’s largest selling newspaper.
According to Schillings, the complaint is over a Jan. 24th report. In that issue, NOTW reported that Pitt and Jolie had agreed to separate, and to divide assets worth $320 million. NOTW also stated they had made arrangements regarding the custody of their six children. Schillings said the report contained “false and intrusive allegations."
Schillings said “The News of the World has failed to meet our clients’ reasonable demands for a retraction of and apology for these false and intrusive allegations which have now been widely republished by mainstream news outlets. We have advised them to bring proceedings which they have now done."
On Sunday, Pitt and Jolie, along with Maddox, 8, attended the NFL's ultimate game, the Super Bowl. The trio watched the game together from a private box at Sun Life Stadium.
Including Maddox, whom Jolie adopted from Cambodia in 2002, prior to her relationship with Pitt, the couple are raising six children. The others are Zahara Marley, Shiloh Nouvel, Pax Thien, Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline

Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes Split
By Simon Perry
Monday March 15, 2010 01:55 PM EDT
The nearly seven-year marriage of Kate Winslet and director Sam Mendes is coming to an end.
"Kate and Sam are saddened to announce that they separated earlier this year," their lawyers say in a statement. "The split is entirely amicable and is by mutual agreement. Both parties are fully committed to the future joint parenting of their children.
Winslet, 34, and Mendes, 44, were married in 2003. They have a son, Joe, 6. Winslet also has a daughter, Mia, 9, from her first marriage to Jim Threapleton.
Winslet and Mendez, who were both born in Reading, England, are also both Oscar winners. She won the Best Actress award in 2009 for The Reader after five previous nominations. He was named Best Director in 2000 for American Beauty.
They became a couple in the fall of 2001, when Mendes approached Winslet to star in two stage productions with his Donmar Warehouse theater company in London. (She turned him down.) Mendes had previously been linked to actresses Calista Flockhart and Rachel Weisz.
