Fla. sheriff fears missing lottery winner killed
Published - Jan 06 2010 01:39PM EST
By TAMARA LUSH - Associated Press Writer
LAKELAND, Fla.— In 2006, Abraham Shakespeare _ a truck driver's assistant who lived with his mother _ won $30 million in the Florida lottery. His good fortune may have cost him his life.
Shakespeare vanished months ago. His mother hopes he is somewhere in the Caribbean, lying on a beach and enjoying the good life away from all the hangers-on who were constantly hitting him up for money.
The sheriff has a more ominous theory: Shakespeare was killed.
"There are a lot of odd and bizarre circumstances in this case," Sheriff Grady Judd said. "We fear and are preparing for the worst. We're working this case as if it were a homicide."
Shakespeare, 43, won the big jackpot after buying a lottery ticket at a convenience store in a town called Frostproof, claiming later that he gave the last $3 in his pocket to a homeless man just before the winning numbers were announced.
Shakespeare _ who had a criminal record that included arrests and prison time for burglary, battery and not paying child support _ took a lump-sum payment of $16.9 million instead of annual installments.
He bought a Nissan Altima, a Rolex from a pawn shop, a $1 million home in a gated community. He talked about starting a foundation for the poor and insisted the money wouldn't change him.
"I'm not a material person," he said in 2007. "I don't let material things run me. I'm on a tight budget."
The money quickly caused him problems.
A former co-worker sued him in 2007, accusing Shakespeare of stealing the winning ticket from him. Six months later, a jury ruled the ticket was Shakespeare's.
Then there were the people constantly asking him for a piece of his fortune.
"They didn't wait. They just came right after they found out he won this money," his mother, Elizabeth Walker, said recently.
She said her son was generous, paying for funerals, lending money to friends starting businesses and even giving a million dollars to a guy known only as "Big Man."
Not long after he bought the million-dollar home in early 2007, he was approached by a woman named Dee Dee Moore, said family and officials.
Moore _ who could not be reached by The Associated Press _ said she was interested in writing a book about Shakespeare's life. She became something of a financial adviser to Shakespeare, who never graduated high school.
Property records show that Moore's company, American Medical Professionals, bought Shakespeare's home for $655,000 last January. His mother said the last time she saw him was shortly afterward, around her birthday in February.
The sheriff said the last time anyone saw Shakespeare was in April _ but it wasn't until Nov. 9 that he was reported missing, by a police informant.
And the story gets more bizarre.
According to The Ledger of Lakeland, the 37-year-old Moore contacted reporters at the newspaper in April, saying Shakespeare was "laying low" because people tried to suck money out of him.
That made sense to Shakespeare's mother _ sort of. "I remember once, talking with me over the phone, he said he might go to Jamaica," she said.
On Dec. 5, a sobbing Moore told The Ledger that she helped Shakespeare disappear, but now wants him to return because detectives were searching her home and car and looking for blood on her belongings.
One reason he wanted to leave, she said, was a child support case for a child he allegedly fathered after winning the lottery. "Abraham sold me his mess to get a better life," she told the paper.
She even gave the paper a video that she said she took of Abraham. In the video, he says he is tired of people asking him for money. "They don't take no for an answer," he says.
"So where you wanna go to?" Moore asks in the video.
"It don't matter to me. I'm not a picky person," Shakespeare replies.
Moore told the paper that she took the video to "protect herself."
Moore said she filed paperwork to take over five mortgages totaling about $370,000 that had been owed to Shakespeare. She said she sold the loans at a loss to another person. She added that many of the people who borrowed from Shakespeare have refused to pay, and she feels threatened by some of them.
Moore's past includes a year of probation after she was charged with falsely reporting that she was carjacked and raped in 2001. Officials said she concocted the scheme so her insurance company would reimburse her for the SUV, which she claimed had been stolen.
The woman did not answer several calls placed to a number listed for her in public records. During a recent visit to the home she bought from Shakespeare, a security box rang to a phone number that had been disconnected.

Abraham Shakespeare's Body Positively Identified; Lottery Winner Dead
PLANT CITY, Fla. (CBS/AP) The family of Florida lottery winner Abraham Shakespeare has probably been dreading this day since they reported him missing last November.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's office confirmed Friday that remains found a day earlier were those of Shakespeare. Police used fingerprints to identify the 43-year-old truck driver's assistant who won a $31 million lottery jackpot in 2006.
The body was found in Plant City, about 25 miles northeast of Tampa, at a home connected to Dorice Moore, a woman who had befriended him and now lives in the $1 million home he bought with his winnings.
Police have named Moore a "person of interest" in Shakespeare's disappearance but she has not been charged.
In 2006, Shakespeare opted for a lump sum payment of nearly $17 million. He had been missing since April 2009, but his family didn't report it until November.

You're welcome.
I wonder what they mean by the home was "connected to" the Moore woman. Maybe that connection is what lead LE to search that home in the first place?

Body Identified As Missing Lotto Winner
Abraham Shakespeare Missing Since April; Remains Found In Plant City
PLANT CITY, Fla. --
Remains found in Plant City, Fla. were identified Friday afternoon as missing lottery winner Abraham Shakespeare, the Associated Press reported.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's office said Friday the remains were identified through fingerprints. The body was found Thursday at a Plant City home connected to a woman who had befriended him.
A medical examiner worked Thursday to identify remains found in a Plant City back yard.
Detectives said the the body belongs to 43-year-old Abraham Shakespeare, the missing $17 million Florida Lotto winner who has been missing since April.
The body was found five feet underground, covered by a 30-by-30-foot concrete slab. Police said they believe the slab was laid to cover up a killing.
"Somebody put that body in that hole," the sheriff said.
Investigators said they are working to preserve the evidence found in the back yard of a Hillsborough County home.
"It's a few inches at a time, trying to expose the body," the sheriff said. "It's being done with hand tools and brushes."
Family members said they also believe the body belongs to Shakespeare.
"I just hope he didn't suffer," said Cynthia Johnson, Shakespeare's cousin. "He was a good person. He was just used. They manipulated him because they knew he didn't know any better."
Records showed that the home is off state Road 60 in Plant City and is owned by Shar Krasniqi -- the one-time boyfriend of the only named person of interest in the case, Dee Dee Moore.
Moore claimed she helped Shakespeare disappear. Investigators said she then transferred $1 million from his bank account to hers.
Records show that the $250,000 Plant City home where the remains were found was purchased at the end of April, around the same time that Shakespeare disappeared.
Neighbors said they feared what detectives may find in the home's back yard.
"If they find him, it would be some closure for the mother, which I hope she gets," neighbor Linda Crawford said. "The people involved, I hope they get what they deserve."
Shakespeare hasn't been seen by family and friends since April. There's a $5,000 reward for tips on his whereabouts.
Police said they were continuing their investigation.
"We're certainly speaking with people that we believe have knowledge of this," the sheriff said.
Investigators hope to identify the remains by the weekend or longer if they have to wait for DNA results.
Police said no one has been arrested yet, but when asked what she'd like to say to the person who killed her cousin, Johnson said, "I hope they rot in hell."

Moore: 'I Didn't Pull The Trigger' in Shakespeare's Death
February 1, 2010 at 11:31 p.m.
By Merissa Green
The Ledger
LAKELAND | The woman called “the person of interest” in the death of Lakeland Lotto winner Abraham Shakespeare denied Monday night that she “pulled the trigger.”
“God knows I did not pull that trigger and the court system will prove that,”
Dorice “DeeDee” Moore, 37, said. “I'm guilty of covering up his death. I will go to jail and I will prove my innocence.”
The 43-year-old Shakespeare won a $17 million lump sum Lotto payout in November 2006.
His body was found Thursday underneath a concrete slab at a Plant City House.
The official cause of death has not been released. The Hillsborough County
Sheriff's Office was expected to release the cause of death Monday but by the evening there was no information.
Debbie Carter, the agency's spokeswoman, said Hillsborough investigators had nothing to say and she did not have a timeline when the cause of death would be released, despite sending an e-mail Friday that the information would be released Monday.
Moore, who befriended Shakespeare and acquired his assets, said through text messages to The Ledger and a phone interview late Monday night that she told investigators what happened and that is being investigated.
“I would never hurt anyone in my life,” Moore said. “I'm truly sorry to Shakespeare's family and friends. My heart goes out to them.”
She would not answer questions about whether a gun is involved and she said there are witnesses to what happened.
Moore said she has told investigators who pulled the trigger and there will be others who will be arrested, too.
“I know what I've done,” Moore said. “I'm not worried. I didn't need to steal from him; he would do whatever I wanted.”
Moore said Shakespeare's death was a result of him being robbed by someone else.
She said she had good reason for not coming forward sooner but would not give any specific details.
“I like to live and breath and I don't want to worry every time I step out my door because the Sheriff's Office cannot protect me 24-7,” she said.
The investigation into the disappearance of Shakespeare began in November when a cousin, Cedric Edom, reported him missing to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
Shakespeare was last seen in April and his remains were found behind the two-story house beneath a concrete slab.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation into his disappearance.
The investigation was turned over to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office after his body was found.
Hillsborough Sheriff David Gee said the remains were found more than 5 feet beneath the ground in a 30-by-30-foot area where homicide investigators had been told to look for the body.
Investigators spent three days last week digging for Shakespeare's remains and identified his body through fingerprints.
Earlier in January, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd identified Moore as a person of interest in the investigation. She has not been charged, Judd has previously said.
Moore told The Ledger she helped Shakespeare disappear and filmed him on video saying he wanted to leave to get away from people pestering him for money and child support problems.
Moore befriended Shakespeare in December 2008 and acquired his house at 9340 Redhawk Bend Drive, through a quick claim deed on Jan. 9, 2009, according to Polk County Property Appraiser records. The house is held in the name of her company, American Medical Professionals, Inc.
Moore told The Ledger that Shakespeare begged her to buy his house and after repeatedly saying no, she finally agreed to the deal for $655,000.
Judd has previously said his investigators can't see how Moore paid for the house. Moore later told investigators she paid cash.
Judd said Moore moved more than $1 million of Shakespeare's money into an account over which she had sole signing authority. She also used his cell phone to send text messages and phone calls to herself and others.
The Plant City property where he was buried is owned by Shar Krasniqi, according to Hillsborough property records.
Judd identified Krasniqi as Moore's boyfriend.
Richard Land, the former owner of the property, said Moore paid him with a check from the account of Abraham Shakespeare LLC.
Howard Stitzel, a lawyer who has done work for Shakespeare and Moore, operates his law firm at the house. Stitzel's lawyer, said Moore is his landlord.
Stitzel previously told The Ledger that he last talked to Shakespeare in October.
And during a child support hearing in the summer, Stitzel told the court that one of Shakespeare's “handlers” said Shakespeare was having health problems and was out of the country.
Glen Lansky, a Brandon lawyer, representing Stitzel said Monday morning that he can't comment about the phone conversation Stitzel had with Shakespeare until the investigation is over.
“He's confirmed everything with police,” Lansky said.
Shakespeare's mother, Elizabeth Walker, said Friday evening that she wants to question the person responsible for her son's death. She wants to ask if her son suffered and if he was buried alive.
Walker has previously said she won't have peace until the person responsible for her son's death is convicted.
“I will never blame God no matter what has happened to me,” she said. “Some day they are going to have to answer to God.”

"DeeDee" Moore Arrested Tuesday in Millionaire's Death
By Merissa Green
The Ledger
Published: Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at 1:02 a.m.
LAKELAND | Dorice "DeeDee" Moore, the woman at the center of the investigation into the disappearance and slaying of Lakeland Lotto winner Abraham Shakespeare, was arrested Tuesday and was charged with accessory after the fact to first-degree murder.
Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee at a press conference Tuesday night outlined a series of steps that Moore took to hide Shakespeare's body and to make it appear he was still alive.
Gee said Shakespeare was killed in April and at that time, Moore arranged for someone to dig a hole at the Plant City home owned by Moore's boyfriend where Shakespeare's body was found last week.
Although Moore, 37, was not charged with Shakespeare's murder, Gee said the investigation into the slaying is far from over. He did not say who investigators think actually killed Shakespeare, 43.
"She can be charged with murder," Gee said about Moore. "This investigation is still unfolding, and I suspect there will be other charges. This case involves not only the murder of Mr. Shakespeare but also the fraud involving what happened to his fortune, and that is right now a very complex part of the investigation that we will eventually get to."
Since November, when officials said Shakespeare was missing, Moore has repeatedly maintained that she befriended the lottery winner and had helped him disappear to escape child support obligations and constant requests for money.

Authorities search home in Shakespeare murder case
LAKELAND, FL -- Authorities began searching the house of Dorice "Dee Dee" Donegan Moore on Monday.
Moore is the woman at the top of the suspect list in the case of murdered lotto winner Abraham Shakespeare.
Investigators began their search just after 10:00 Monday morning, and they were expected to spend the day looking through the 4,000 square-foot home for any information that could tie Moore to Shakespeare.
More than five hours were spent inside the garages of the home. Authorities pulled out printers, computers and boxes of documents.
Authorities arrested Dee Dee Moore last week and charged her with accessory to murder in connection with the Shakespeare case.
Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee said those charges could be upgraded or more charges could come over the course of their investigation.
Hillsborough County inherited the case from Polk County after Shakespeare's body was discovered under a slab of concrete at a Plant City property.

Reported by: Karen Castillo
Last Update: 2/16 10:31 pm

Debbie Carter, a spokesperson with the Sheriff's Office, confirms that Shar Krasniqi was interviewed by investigators about the case Friday.
Carter also says Krasniqi returned a 2008 black Corvette. The Sheriff's Office believes the Corvette may have been bought with Shakespeare's money.
DeeDee Moore was arrested last month for accessory after the fact in the case. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd called Krasniqi Moore's boyfriend.
According to the Hillsborough County Appraiser's website, Krasniqi owns the home where investigators recovered Shakespeare's remains.
Krasniqi has not been named a suspect or person of interest in the case

Woman Charged With Murder in Lottery Winner Death
Woman charged with first-degree murder in Florida Lottery winner's death
The woman already facing charges related to the death of a Florida Lottery winner was charged Friday with first-degree murder.
Hillsborough County detectives have filed the first-degree murder charge against Dorice "Dee Dee" Moore, 37, in connection with the homicide of Abraham Shakespeare, Sheriff David Gee said.
Moore was already in the Hillsborough County Jail, charged as an accessory to Shakespeare's murder.
Shakespeare was killed in April 2009, at a home in a rural town east of Tampa, according to detectives. That's around the last time Shakespeare was seen. Officials in Polk County — where he lived and was reported missing — had long thought he had been killed.
Moore befriended Shakespeare after he claimed the $30 million winning ticket in 2006 and took a $17 million lump sum payment.
She said she wanted to write a book about Shakespeare, but officials said Moore scammed him out of money. Shakespeare's body was found last month buried 5 feet deep under a 30 foot by 30 foot concrete slab behind the home Moore owns with her boyfriend.
Moore has said previously that she did not kill Shakespeare. No one else has been charged in the death.

Dee Dee Moore points finger at own son
Updated: Friday, 19 Feb 2010, 8:53 PM EST
Published : Thursday, 04 Feb 2010, 1:57 AM EST
TAMPA, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Dee Dee Moore is behind bars in Hillsborough County after a judge today set her bond at one million dollars with a condition. If Moore comes up with the necessary 10 percent, she'll have to prove the money is legal.
Investigators say she conned 43-year-old lotto winner Abraham Shakespeare out of millions.
In court, there was a stunning answer from the Assistant State Attorney when the judge asked him if Moore was being cooperative.
Assistant State Attorney Jay Pruner responds, "To the extent if cooperation involves giving a variety of explanations about how Mr. Shakespeare was killed including being killed by her 14-year-old son, her attorney, Mr. Shakespeare's cousin and drug dealer, or herself in self-defense; if that's cooperation your honor."
Judge Walter Heinrich persisted: "So she has made all those claims at one time or another?" "Yes, yes sir!"
Also revealed today, a time-line of details. According to the criminal affidavit, somewhere between December 28th and January 21st, "Moore approached an undisclosed witness asking if he knew of anyone that was awaiting sentencing in prison and would be willing to admit to killing Abraham Shakespeare in exchange for $50,000.00."
Also in that affidavit, on January 25th, "Moore met with an undisclosed witness and provided a Smith and Wesson .38 caliber revolver and told him this was the weapon that had killed Shakespeare."
According to the affidavit, later that same day Moore took that witness to a home on Highway 60 and showed him the concrete slab where Shakespeare's body was buried and they agreed to move the body that night.
But instead, investigators were tipped off, and began digging up the yard the very next day, finding Shakespeare's remains a few days later.
The judge also asked the state attorney's office about the status of the murder investigation and when more arrests would be likely. The assistant state attorney replied likely in the next few days or weeks.

Dee Dee Moore Charged With First-Degree Murder
TAMPA, Fla. -- The woman charged with first-degree murder in connection with the homicide of a Florida Lottery winner has been ordered held without bail.
Dorice "Dee Dee" Moore appeared before a Hillsborough County judge Saturday morning.
Detectives said Abraham Shakespeare was killed at a home in a rural town east of Tampa in April 2009, about three years after taking a $17 million lump sum on a winning Lottery ticket.
Moore is accused of befriending Shakespeare and scamming him out of money.
Shakespeare's body was found on Jan. 29 buried beneath a slab of concrete behind a home Moore owns with her boyfriend. Court records said Shakespeare was likely killed on April 6 or 7.
Moore had previously been charged as an accessory to Shakespeare's murder.

Investigators: Bullets Match Moore's Gun
Dee Dee Moore Charged With First-Degree Murder
PLANT CITY, Fla. --
Dorice "Dee Dee" Moore appeared before a Hillsborough County judge Saturday morning and was charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond.
Investigators believe they have substantial evidence against Moore in connection with the homicide of a Florida Lottery winner.
Hillsborough County detectives said two bullets found in Abraham Shakespeare's body were fired from Moore's gun.
Investigators said Moore offered bribes to people to say they had seen Shakespeare alive or even pretend to be him over the phone well after his death.
Moore shot and uploaded a video to YouTube that investigators said depicts Shakespeare's frustration with people who ask him for money.
In the video, Moore can be heard suggesting far-off places Shakespeare might go to get away.
Investigators claim to have video of Moore buying items to conceal Shakespeare's killing.
According to detectives, Moore was controlling all of Shakespeare's lottery winnings he had not already lost or given away.
Shakespeare's body was found on Jan. 29 buried beneath a slab of concrete behind a home Moore owns with her boyfriend. Court records said Shakespeare was likely killed on April 6 or 7.
According to an arrest report, Moore provided several accounts as to how Shakespeare was killed. She admitted to being present in each account.
Detectives said Moore also paid someone$50,000 to take the blame for Abraham's death. The report said Moore had financial motive to kill Shakespeare and conceal the truth concerning his death and disappearance.
Moore had previously been charged as an accessory to Shakespeare's murder.
Moore, who is being held at the Hillsborough County Jail, had previously said she did not kill Shakespeare. No one else has been charged in connection with the death.
Shakespeare initially told Shakespeare she wanted to write a book about his life. There is no evidence that Moore has been a writer in the past.
