Rare Cat Escapes

Very rare $15,000 cat escapes from a home in California.

$15,000 for an F1 Savannah is mighty steep. Only thing I can figure is that price includes breeding rights.

The reporter didn't get it quite right. He said a Savannah is Serval X Domestic. Actually it goes like this:

Asian Leopard X Domestic -> Bengal (my cats)

Bengal X African Serval -> Savannah

If I was in San Diego I'd probably be out looking for that cat right now. One thing the reporter did get right: that cat is definitely not fit to be out on its own for very long.

A beautiful cat. He certainly should not be out on the loose, hope he is found soon.

RatPatrol, I was curious about the cost - $15,000 sounds so high. Look at this price range on one website:

How Much Does A Savannah Cost?
The price of a Savannah will vary depending on the quality of the individual cat. Following are average price ranges:

Males: Females:
F1 $7,500-$22,000 F1 $6000-$22,000
F2 $4,500-$16,000 F2 $4,500-$14,000
F3 $3,000-$6,000 F3 $3,500-$5,500
F4 $1200-$3,000 F4 $1,200-$4,500
F5 $950-$6,000 F5 $950-$3,000
SBT $950-$6,000 SBT $950-$3,000

Why Are Savannahs So Expensive?
Higher percentage Savannahs are rare and very difficult to breed. It takes many years and a lot of luck to mate a Serval with a domesticated cat. Only a few breeders worldwide have had success.

Servals are wild cats with special needs in terms of their caging requirements, their diet and their health care. Caring for pure Servals and mating them to domestic cats is costly, time consuming and demanding.

Ah, yes... A1 Savannahs. I don't know those folks personally but they are well known in my circle of exoticat people. A1 produces some very nice savannahs but the people are considered to be a bit, uh, full of themselves, sotaspeak. Dig thru their albums and you'll see they cater to the celebrity and foreign royalty market. The "price is no object" crowd: actresses, models, various minor princes & such in the Emirates, and so forth. If they can get those prices by targeting that sort of clientele, more power to 'em I suppose. Very Happy

I can tell you from firsthand experience (well, firsthand conversations - I've never bought a savannah myself) that there are F1 & F2 savannahs of equal or better quality available from several breeders I'm aware of for no more than $6,000 and more typically $2,500 (with a neuter contract - no breeding rights).

If you wanna see the ultimate in "snooty pricing" Google around for the Ashera Cat. $40,000 last time I checked. The Ashera breeders won't come out and say it direvtly, but the truth of the matter is that Ashera is nothing but a line of savannahs that have been selectively inbred to maximize their size. The Ashera commercial on YouTube says they are a mix of "Asian Leopard, African Serval and domestic". Which, if you look at my previous post, is exactly what a savannah is!

When I first got into hybrids I was surprised at how much deception and trickery goes on in the business. Hell, there's even deception, trickery and some outright evil going on in plain old "moggu cat" rescue.

It's amazing how some people are so easily fooled! I just could not imagine paying such outrageous prices for a pet. Guess there is something for everybody. Very Happy

I've gotta figure these super expensive cats are sold to those who have so much money that they just don't care. What a concept. I will probably own an F1 savannah some day but I assure you it won't be the $40K "brand", or even the $15K "brand"... Most likely I will wait patiently for one to turn up in the cat rescue system (it happens more often than you might expect) and get me a nice cat for a $500 donation and be helping out a cat in need at the same time.

Frankly, it always boggles my mind that folks will put out big bucks for what amounts to mongrels, mutts, "F1 offspring" -- which are nothing more than the result of breeding two distinctly different breeds together. All that's needed is to assign a catchy name to these mongrels and ppl fall over themselves ..... Very Happy

My neighbour announced to me that they'd purchased a JUG. Oh yeah, a registered JUG; a new and noteworthy breed. Yep, an F1 cross between a Jack Russell Terrier and a Pug. Good grief, she even claims to have registration papers for it. Hahahaha There's a sucker born every minute.

"F1 JUG" is laughable on many levels indeed. But I'll just pick on the misuse of "F1" for now. "F1" is short for Filial Generation 1, a term used when speaking of hybrids (cross-breeding of 2 different species). Last I checked, Pugs and Jack Russels are of the same species, so their "F1 JUG" makes about as much sense as letting your Siamese screw an Abyssinian and calling the offspring "F1 Scabby" (more like "F1 Moggy"). Laughing

FWIW in this discussion, Bengals, Savannahs and Chausies are actually hybrids, not mixed-breeds.

That has to be one ugly dog. Gotta a pic? I have a Jack Russell and he is cute but crossing with a pug would just be sad. Smile

I know we are talking about cats - but I'm doggy sitting for a friend in the hospital - this is a "chug!" Chihuahua-Pug. She is a pretty sturdy dog, very energetic but a yapper.

"OH my" indeed! Laughing I hope it's just the camera angle that's making it look like Ol' Yapper's head is way too small for her body.

Allow me to now be a smartass and show off my biases Very Happy

You are so right, RP. Lucy (the Yapper) is a little odd looking and your cat is really exquisite! We are having fun with her anyway. Our chubby Beagle has lost 5 lbs. since she has been here -- she loves to play with him and they run and roughhouse frequently.

Well, I didn't mean any real disrespect to Lucy - just being a smartass - but I guess I do have a bit of an issue with people mixing breeds together in what seems like an arbitrary manner. I support the idea of controlled, orderly breeding "programs" that hybridize related species much more than the idea of cross-breeding. But then, that's my bias showing again! Very Happy

Having said that, I'm not actually the "hybrid snob" I'm probably sounding like. Every mixed-breed stray moggie that crosses my path gets taken in and cared for and treated like one of my own. If my living situation were different I'd probably keep them all - I know I feel like I want to - but I can't so I eventually find permanent homes for them.

From what I understand, Lucy was not "planned," but her parents were from a nice neighborhood.
