Some Changes and Reorganization

Joy and I have decided to do some reorganizing and make a few changes to the board. As everyone knows, it has been a rough couple of weeks, and somethings have come to a head as well.

First of all, we have decided to give our famous Wangchung his own forum where he can post his satirical threads, which are either loved or hated depending on point of view. This way his "work" will be collected in one place Smile for all to enjoy or gnash their teeth at! Its in the Spotlight category. http://www.refugeesunleashed.net/viewforum.php?f=50

Secondly and more serious is the continuous derailment of threads issue. No one is a saint on it, it takes two or 20 to derail. The problem is that the many posters who want to post on the topic have to wade through infighting and poster attacks. I am not talking about the normal arguing over a post but the bait and rebaits that ends up with most of the thread nothing more than a bashfest between posters. We have tried saying"scroll' we have tried saying let it go, we have hoped that posters themselves let it die out and nothing has worked.

What we are implementing, is a new policy. If there is more than two pages taken up with "attacks" we will post a reminder to take it to HE and split them out. IF someone decides to continue the attacks, no matter who it is, will be either banned or given a 12 hour break from posting. This wont be a question of who is right or wrong, its a simple policy. All out attacks on posters are not going to continue to make it impossible for the rest of the members to post on the subject. We have a place for arguments and hashing out POSTER beefs. Heated Exchange. Its just not fair that all the members who want to participate have to give up due to pages of a bashfest in a thread. The end result of this, is that perfectly valid threads are getting moved to HE because of the personal likes or dislikes of a few taking them over. To split a thread means we have to go through each post individually and mark it for moving. Its time consuming and we just cant do it on a 10 page thread with the other work. So 2 pages are the limit.

Hopefully the above changes will make it more enjoyable for everyone without stifling free speech and still allow all to post on the case topics and debate the issue or posts.

great changes .......however what if someone is not here 24/7 and thinks that they are adding to what seemed to be a legit defense of a point if view but because they were not here their post appears to be continuing the issue even though they have just arrived.

I ask because I do not read dates or times of posts and seldom the posters nick. I have a hard enough time quoting without stacking past 4 but I do realize that like others I post at different times and days and may not know that an issue is supposed to be dying when I think to add something to the issue as I read each post in order.

Did that makes sense?

Well you will know because we aren't talking about pov's on the topic but personal beefs between posters that go on to derailing a thread and ahve little to nothing to do with the topic. and our reminder will be on the thread.

Okay thanks. I just find some are so clever that it appears to be POV when in clearly is not or the posts in question are hybrid in that they are part POV and the rest is obnoxious or vice versa....Thanks again.

I'm OK with the "arguing just to be arguing" posts being moved to HE. They do get old and annoying fast.

But I don't know about moving WangChung's posts. Does that mean he/she can't post any funny pics or retorts in the NH forum anymore? I don't think I like that. What does Wang think about this?

wang is fine, and of course he still makes funny retorts. Smile Its just that his satire work has its own showcase now. Its a good thing.

I love Wang Chung, and will read his posts anywhere.

I've started a new topic in the Heated Exchange for the humorless, called "Egress."

I like and respect the moderators and appreciate that derailers of threads will be booted. It's pretty easy to tell who they are, as they usually make half or a third of the posts in the thread.

VC and Joy, this seems like a good compromise.
Everyone should be happy with this I would think.

Perhaps you should try marriage counseling on the side.

VC and Joy, this sounds very reasonable to me.
And VC, I thought your "Let's Have Some Fun" thread was great, it was also a good way for us all to get to know each other better. Maybe you could do that as a weekly event? I love Refugees and I'm so happy it has gotten so big and successful.

VC and Joy:
All I can add is "Oh Happy Day".

It is very hard to try to go through a thread to get to the meat of the topic when I am only running at 24Kpbs on a dial-up, Crying or Very sad So to get past all the fighting it takes me an hour. I am sure you both have thought about this thoughtfully and have come to a wise decision.

Stay safe!

ps: as to Wang, that is a wonderful idea. Thanks, I personally like his pics and etc.

I would have really been interested to see how things would have turned out on a thread if everyone would have been able to ignore and scroll rather than repeatedly respond. Wonder what would have happened?

Gabrielle, it doesn't happen and I doubt it will ever happen.

There are some though who seem to make it their sole purpose to derail threads. They seem satisfied asking ridiculous questions, not responding to direct questions, and being combatitive and argumentative. Usually if there are, say, a hundred posts, that person has thirty or forty of them. Their sole purpose seems to be to get everyone arguing with each other and drag down the site in its entirety. I say give them the boot.

On a side note, the best way for this board to be healthy is for people to start at the front page and post on other threads. I'll keep repeating this as long as people keep obsessing over a case that people keep picking at like an open wound. There's so much more to discuss. Congressional elections, different countries, the middle east, health care, humor, the arts, etc. Whether or not people want to discuss other things with any enthusiasm remains to be seen. If they don't, I think this board will self-destruct.

Appears so. All of us are supposed to appreciate the jolly fun the popular kids have with attacks, racial smears and chats about white sheets.

Quite frankly I am dismayed with all the "moderation" that seems to be going on now at RU. It is reminding me more and more of the days I participated at the CTV message boards.

I realize it is MY choice as to whether I participate on a board and I have participated on quite a few and that being said, I do not EVER remember PMing a moderator to complain about someone.

IMO, low to no moderation on a website means be prepared for what some perceive to be offensive language, offensive photos, and offensive points of views and if someone can't handle it, they really shouldn't be on that board to begin with.

I'm also not sure I understand what is considered "derailment" of a thread. If it is simply going off topic for several pages or straying from the original topic of the thread, then I think we are all guilty of that at one time or another, or maybe even more than one time or another Embarassed

While there are certain members that annoy the hell out of me and whom I do not agree with as to their opinions, it sure would be boring to only post on a board where all opinions are alike because then where would the debate come into play?

I actually agree with you Pause.. we arent talking about off topic.. threads go off topic all the time here, and thats fine. Its the pages and pages of poster bashing that makes it impossible to read a thread. I dont mean "you are stupid if you believe joran said he was etc.." i mean "you are a stupid fat retard" then pages of nothing but that. its not off topic onto something else its just pages of fighting not debating or arguing any topic excpet how nasty someone is.

I like the different pov's and debates and arguments and i dont care if it gets rude at times. thats what low mod is. Pages of it though on one thread with no reference to any topic but the poster are a different animal. And thats fine to if its taken to HE. Im about to move the posts i splite from the racist slurs to HE. They can take it up there.

Im not sure why ppl want different posters with diff pov's banned, this isnt SM or BFN where if you disagree you get booted
