Keeping the board fun in 2008

Anyone have suggestions on improving this board? Here's three:

1. Move heated exchange to bottom of front page.

2. Move natalee holloway section to missing persons or cold cases. This might agressively encourage other discussion (and it's an accurate description of where the case stands).

3. Move boat drink room to top of front page. Don't merge it with other threads. Keep it as a special sticky section in the pub. It's a great thread and moving out of natalee holloway might encourage people to see it in a better context. Move birthday and other non-NH stickies to pub as well.

I'm trying to think of ways posters can be discouraged from cannibalizing each other. Bold changes might encourage positive discussion. A radical thought: temporarily deactivate someone who is posting more than half their posts in heated exchange (yardstick could be past week, past twenty posts or whatever).

More than once I've liked a poster when we talk somewhere other than in the heated exchange or natalee holloway section. New members would see there's more to discuss than personality differences from an old case. Of course, posters are most responsible for discussion. So, I'd encourage every poster to join in the fun threads here!

What are other thoughts or suggestions?

That's one way to view it. I'm not sure why few comment. Dialogue is good.

Is there a time limit on coming up with any? I hate having to be pressured and forced to make quick decisions

Just clicking back on the other 2 pages here in this forum the topic of changing the board or making additions have been mentioned since 2006.

Woe brought it up about a general discussion forum & in one of the threads the BDR was mentioned as well for chitchat.

http://www.refugeesunleashed.net/viewtopic.php?t=5098

http://www.refugeesunleashed.net/viewtopic.php?t=4595

It's odd to see so many original members nics on these old threads with "deactivated" and "banned" under them and I'm not in the loop enuf to know who's back as who.

I do recall that since I joined that LTF/deidre/et al also did threads scattered about trying to drum up "cheery chat" or however it should be described to direct the board to go in different directions.

I guess it boils down to people's interests. I've seen lots of threads on the different forums with stories/links and no replies. That could be for more than one reason- some may not care for the thread starter so they don't post, or they don't care for the topic, or they have no opinion on the subject matter.

I've never been a mod for a board, but one time I did try to contribute heavily to a now defunct board with various "news you can use" type topics and it never caught on, a few there just wanted to cause discourse and the owner just left.

But it does seem that RU is still standing strong since it's inception and there remains a very dedicated group to continue meeting and discussing what is important to them.

I've been thinking about this and I agree the Natalee thread could be moved to the Missing thread. The Madeline McCann one also. I would like to see the Missing thread moved to the top , where the Natalee thread is now. It seems that there is new missing persons all to frequently. Also, Leah Hickman's body has been found, so it needs moved to crimes and trials. I think Phil Spector should be moved to the crimes and trials and then when it's active again it could be brought back out. I'm not decided yet on the BDR, but it definitely doesn't need to get lost

I think the BDR should move to the Pub. It could be a sticky there, and conctinue to be the gathering place that it has become.

I agree the Natalie board needs to be moved to become part of a board, instead of standing on its own. Hornbeck is also a done deal, so could be moved.

Good points. Yes, this board has done well despite dire predictions. I appreciate this section as it encourages feedback.

How can diversity be encouraged without sacrificing liveliness?

P.S. Discourse good, discord not always so good.

I think your P.S. Is the important point here,Pax. Many (,including my self) find discord unpleasant & physically draining. Sometimes people are afraid to make suggestions that will be ridiculed by others or attacked & talked about.
I like RU ,sometimes am rather timid regarding drawn into a fighting ,totally negative thread. There is much to discuss in the news ,the missing etc. why do we have to discuss any poster?
There is so much good in the worst of us
So much bad in the best of us
That it behoves the best of us
To talk about the rest of us.

Pax, I finally started venturing out on to the other boards here and there are some boards with topics I didn't even know existed and I've been here over 2 years. Laughing

I always went to NH out of habit.

I agree with you, lots of good topics and fun threads on the other boards.

Have you checked out the Double Dutch school? It's a hoot! And you can actually learn a bit of Dutch. I really enjoy spending time there - and the Dutchies love me; I make them laugh til tears roll down their faces when I speak Dutch. Very Happy Then they help me.

Oh my gosh! You're missing out on the best place in RU, Pro! Most people pop in there occasionally, but the regulars who take care of the BDR are wonderful!! Fantastic, eclectic music all the time; gorgeous pictures; jokes; food (good, bad, and ugly Very Happy ; ) chatter; just a nice place to go for some nice, friendly company.
