Former Robyn Gardner Aruba Suspect Gary Giordano Wore Bizarre 'Jackalope' Mask

Despite being held in an Aruban prison on suspicion for murder for almost four months, Gary Giordano was never charged in the disappearance of Robyn Gardner and is now a free man, but a photo obtained exclusively by RadarOnline.com gives insight into his bizarre past behavior.

The close-up shot shows the 50-year-old from Maryland wearing long furry ears with a fake nose and heavy framed glasses, like a warped jackalope, a folklore animal that is a jackrabbit with antelope horns.

“The photo originally came from one of his ex-girlfriends,” Gardner’s boyfriend Richard Forester exclusively told Radar.

"Several women who dated Gary in the past, who reached out to me following Robyn's disappearance, have told me the same story, that he would dress up in the jackalope mask and hide in the woods," Forester claimed.

"They also said he would sometimes wear a deer costume too."

“They also claimed that they needed to constantly inform him where they were at any given point. If she was at the grocery store, the girl would take a photo to send to him and prove she was actually there.

“The women all told pretty much identical stories.” Forester said.

As RadarOnline.com previously reported, Giordano was released from an Aruban prison in November. Authorities considered him to be the prime suspect in 35-year-old Gardner’s murder, but failed to find enough evidence to charge him.

The couple, who met on an adult dating site, went on a last minute vacation to the Caribbean island which ended in tragedy when Robyn vanished, allegedly while snorkeling, on August 2, 2011.

Monday marked Robyn’s 36th birthday, and the important day just brought it home to Richard that the mystery surrounding her disappearance is no closer to being solved. He fears that the authorities in Aruba have given up searching for her, RadarOnline.com reported especially now that Attorney General Taco Stein has left his post there and been appointed Solicitor-General for the Windward Islands based on St Maarten.

“I haven’t heard anything from anyone there since Peter Blanken took over the position,” Forester told Radar. “I can’t get any answers, and I really don’t think there is anything going on.

“Here the FBI are still running an ongoing investigation; in Aruba I think they are just happy it is off the island.”

Robyn Gardners Boyfriend Fears Aruba Has Given Up Search, They Are Happy It Is Off The Island

April 23, 2012

Robyn Gardner should have been at home on Monday celebrating her 36th birthday with her loved ones, but tragically the fate of the Maryland woman remains a mystery eight months after she vanished in Aruba.

We always did something special like go out for dinner or on a romantic trip for her birthday, Robyns heart-broken boyfriend Richard Forester told RadarOnline.com in an exclusive interview.

As previously reported , authorities arrested Gardner's traveling companion, 50-year-old Gary Giordano as he tried to leave Aruba last summer, after he reported Gardner had disappeared while snorkeling August 2. After a series of searches, neither Gardner's body or any related physical evidence was recovered, spurring a judge last December to order Giordano freed.

My birthday is next week and we used to do joint celebrations. Weve gone down to Miami for the weekend before, or gone out for a nice date night. Last year we went to Annapolis, which is a nice little sailing village and we went out on the water, explained Forester.

Sadly, this April 23, Richard will be spending the night alone having a private toast to Robyn. I am just going to have my own thoughts and prayers, she in my mind every day but today especially.

With the anniversary of her disappearance looming, Richard fears that the authorities in Aruba have given up the investigation, especially now that Attorney General Taco Stein has left his post there and been appointed Solicitor-General for the Windward Islands based on St Maarten.

I havent heard anything from anyone there since Peter Blanken took over the position, Forester told RadarOnline.com. I cant get any answers and I really dont think there is anything going on.

Here the FBI are still running an ongoing investigation, in Aruba I think they are just happy it is off the island.

Despite there being no sightings or leads in the investigation since Robyn vanished and the sole suspect walked free, Richard still refuses to give up hope that shell be found safe and sound.

I will always hope that they are going to find her, I will always believe she is alive until proven otherwise, I hope that she will be back next year in time for her birthday, he told RadarOnline.com.

E! Network is airing a special on Monday night at 10 pm called Death In Paradise, recounting four different exotic vacations that ended in horrific circumstances.

The other stories include that of 21-year-old Julia Sumnicht, who was pronounced dead in Miami Beach with GHB found in her system; Bobby Salcedo, who was kidnapped and then shot execution style in Mexico; and Monica Beresford-Redman, wife of Survivor producer Bruce Beresford-Redman, who was murdered while vacationing in Mexico with her family.

Its just a coincidence that the E! show is airing on her birthday but Im pleased as I think it is important to keep it fresh and relevant, said Forester.

Dark Currents, book trailer video Dark Currents is the title of my next novel. It’s a thriller set on my favorite island of Aruba. Here’s the video trailer for the book.

A little scary, very intriguing, with enough twists to keep you reading to the very last page. San Nicolaas Police Chief Jules Calenda, who you met in my novels An Island Away and Under A Blue Flag figures in the story, but there’s a lot more to it than that. Suffice it to say, two people go snorkeling, one comes back, or did they? Dark Currents will be released on 26 June 2012. You can pre-order the paper version from Amazon.com or get the Kindle version on the 26th. Enjoy the story!

Oh, you're right, I didn't notice. Then maybe it isn't Gary. He wouldn't make that error IMO.

So ... a bad joke?

I don't know. I think it is unlikely he would write Gaithersburg incorrectly ...also - whoever wrote should have written Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA

Suit: Man denied death benefit after 2011 disappearance of companion in Aruba
Sun-Times Media

Updated: June 14, 2012

A man considered a person of interest in a woman’s 2011 disappearance in Aruba filed a lawsuit Thursday against an insurance company for allegedly failing to pay a death benefit on her life.

Gary Giordano is suing Chicago-based AmEx Assurance Company for the $3.5 million benefit, which he contends in a suit filed in Cook County Circuit Court. was part of a travel insurance policy he took out before his trip to Aruba with Robyn Lynn Gardner.

Gardner, 36, of Maryland, has been missing since Aug. 2, 2011, and Giordano reported her disappearance to AmEx two days later, according to the suit. Gardner is presumed to be dead.

The suit claims Giordano paid the premiums on the insurance policy.

Giordano told authorities Gardner disappeared while snorkeling near Baby Beach, Sint Nicolaas in Aruba. He was arrested by Aruban police just three days after Gardner’s disappearance, but never charged.

Richard Forester, Gardner’s boyfriend at the time of her disappearance, called the lawsuit “disgusting.”

Nobody knows whether she is dead or not,” Forester said. “It goes to [Giordano’s] character … he is just trying to make money off of this.”

Forester said he was originally told the benefit was $1.5 million, though Giordano is seeking $2 million more through the suit.

The lawsuit said the $3.5 million was the “full death benefit,” and Gardner was a “covered person” in the policy.

Kym Pasqualini, founder of the National Center for Missing Adults (now part of Let’s Bring Them Home) said the lawsuit and insurance policy is suspicious.

“Right away it appeared to me that having traveler’s insurance on her was a potential motive for homicide,” Pasqualini said.

The two-count suit seeks the full death benefit as well as additional damages.

A spokesperson for the Baltimore FBI office that assisted in the search for Gardner declined to comment on the lawsuit and Scott Blumenshine, the lawyer who filed the lawsuit on Giordano’s behalf, was not available for comment Thursday night.

Efforts to reach American Express were unsuccessful Thursday night.

Giordano Wants to Cash in $3.5 Million Life Insurance Policy
Giordano was held in an Aruba jail for several months in connection with Garner's death

The man suspected in the disappearance of a Maryland woman in Aruba now wants to cash in on the insurance policy he took out on her life.

Gary Giordano, 50, is suing American Express for $3.5 million.

In court documents, Giordano says Robyn Gardner is presumed dead and American Express should pay the full death benefit.

American Express says it's too soon. AmEx tells NBC News that when someone is presumed dead, a claim is not evaluated until 365 days after the incident. It's been a little less than 10 months since Gardner disappeared.

Giordano was held in an Aruba jail from August to November. He was released due to lack of evidence.

This exact policy was one factor that made police suspicious of Giordano in the first place.

“Needless to say, our family is very disappointed that even after all this time, we are no closer to finding out what happened to our Robyn,” Kelly Reed, Gardner’s cousin, said in a statement at the time of Giordano's release.

Giordano says Gardner likely drowned while they were snorkeling.

OM to U.S. FBI case consultation Gardner

ORANGE CITY - The Public Prosecutor (OM) will soon be in the United States with the FBI talking about the case Robyn Gardner. "There is the FBI deported a number of research which we will have," said Chief Peter Blanken the Amigoe. The FBI has questions about the status of the investigation and the results that the OM has been made. The forthcoming visit to the U.S. authorities has nothing to do with the recent requirement of the prime suspect Gary Giordano said the OM.

"Coincidentally, the visit of the OM is this together," says spokesperson Ann Angela. Giordano complained to the insurance arm of American Express. The company refuses namely the life of the American Robyn Gardner to pay.

Gardner disappeared without a trace last August during a vacation in Aruba. She had recently completed a life for her trip worth $ 1.5 million. Giordano is registered as a beneficiary. Justice assumes that Gardner is no longer alive. Giordano Travel Partner is the prime suspect in the disappearance and presumed death and several months spent in custody.

In the absence of evidence, however, he was released and flew back home to America.

Spokesperson Angela says that the visit to the U.S. is not uncommon. "We have very regular contact with the FBI. But even with the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration). This is very important to us. "When asked what the reason for the visit, said the spokesperson that it is a logical stage in the investigation.

Missing Maryland Woman and Media Overload Are Catalyst for Thriller Set in Aruba

(openPR) - The summer is off to a rocky start for Maryland businessman Gary Giordano. Arrested in Annapolis on May 18 for indecent exposure, the lone suspect in the disappearance of Robyn Gardner last year in Aruba is now the inspiration for a new novel that hits stores June 26. Dark Currents, the fifth tome from author Daniel Putkowski, examines an Aruba snorkel trip gone awry and the resulting national media coverage.

Putkowski, a part-time expat who lives much of the year in Aruba, has penned other novels set there, including the 2008 bestseller An Island Away. "This is my first foray into crime fiction and the process was both sad and fascinating," says the author. "There were so many twists and turns in the actual case that it was not difficult to fictionalize a scenario." The latest twist being a lawsuit filed on June 14 by Giordano against Chicago-based AmEx Assurance Company claiming he is owed $3.5 million from an insurance policy on Gardner he secured just days before her mysterious disappearance. During Giordano’s four-month detention in Aruba, authorities focused on the insurance policy as a possible motive for foul play.

"I write fiction, so I had no interest in speculating on what really happened," Putkowski explains. "Rather, I wanted to explore the affect the media can have on high-profile cases. My goal was to create a compelling story of a man and woman whose assumptions lead them down a deadly path." From the beginning, Gardner’s disappearance had all the elements of a gripping thriller--details that didn’t quite add up and national media attention on a suspect who had arranged for an insurance policy that could make him a very rich man.

On the island, the author interacted with reporters and law enforcement to craft his storyline. Independent television journalist Donald Wood--on assignment at the time for NBC--noted, "Putkowski fit right into the pack scouring Aruba for clues in the weeks and months following Gardner’s disappearance. He was out there working leads as hard as any of us journos." CNN anchor and correspondent Martin Savidge said of Dark Currents, "Take it from someone who was there, Putkowski takes fact and wonderfully weaves it into a captivating tale of what if." A reporter who requested anonymity appreciated the author’s sense of humor in Dark Currents, "The real situation was terrible. A missing woman, lots of loose ends. I was grateful Putkowski was able inject a little levity into his novel with characters like fame-obsessed Attorney Jeff Nedd and scowling, desk-pounding Judge Nadine who’s part Nancy Grace, part Judge Judy."

Putkowski, who discussed the Gardner case on the August 31 broadcast of NBC's TODAY show, ended last year with more questions than answers. "We may never know what happened," he now concedes. "I hope someday those who were close to Robyn can find closure." Dark Currents will be available in the U.S. on June 26 and in Aruba in July. The novel can also be read as an e-book.
