'Idol' lift for Hudson at emotional funeral

Postby olympic » Tue Nov 04, 2008 3:05 am

Actress Jennifer Hudson bid farewell to three slain relatives today in an emotional funeral that included rousing gospel performances by her former "American Idol" competitors.

The day began with the estimated 2,500 mourners filing past the open caskets of her mother, Darnell Donerson; her brother, Jason; and her nephew, Julian King. Shortly before the funeral service commenced at Apostolic Church of God on the South Side.
Shortly before the funeral service commenced at Apostolic Church of God on the South Side, Hudson rose from her second-row pew and spent a few moments with each family member. She kissed her mother goodbye, attendees said.

Hudson went first to Julian, 7, who was dressed in white to match his casket.

She then moved to her mother, the matriarch who encouraged her to try out for "American Idol" and wouldn't leave her Englewood home despite her younger daughter's fame. The actress lingered at her mother's light pink casket and gently touched Donerson before leaning down to kiss her goodbye.

Hudson paused at her brother's blue casket before returning to her seat, where she joined her fiance, reality-TV star David "Punk" Otunga, and her sister, Julia. Hudson's composure amid the heartbreaking goodbye became the day's defining moment for many mourners.

"Jennifer is the pillar," family friend Glover Lewis said as he left the Woodlawn church. "It's obvious she's holding the family together."

Donerson, 57, and Jason Hudson, 29, were shot and killed inside the family's Englewood home Oct. 24. Julian, a 2nd grader who had the day off, was taken from the house and killed. His body was found three days later in an SUV parked on the West Side.

No one has been charged, but authorities are calling Julia Hudson's estranged husband, William Balfour, a person of interest. Balfour, who served time for attempted murder, remains in prison after having his parole revoked last week

The invitation-only event required all guests have their names on a list and a light blue ticket with "Hudson Family Funeral" printed on it. The Tribune did not enter the church out of respect for the family's wish that no news media attend.

Police blocked side streets around the church to keep reporters and fans away. Celebrity guests such as Oprah Winfrey, singer Fantasia Barrino, rapper Missy Elliot, actress Queen Latifah and record producer Clive Davis arrived through a private entrance.

Mayor Richard Daley, Cook County Board President Todd Stroger and Rev. Jesse Jackson spoke during the service.

The emotional crescendo, however, came halfway through the service when Barrino, who beat Hudson for the 2004 "American Idol" title, sang the classic gospel song "Your Grace and Mercy," mourners said. After losing to Barrino on "Idol," Hudson beat her out for the coveted role of Effie White in "Dreamgirls" and went on to win an Academy Award.

Calling the Hudsons "my family," Barrino walked off the stage and into the aisle, where she took Hudson's hand and sang directly to her.

I think it healed Jennifer's soul just then," said family friend Lisa Allison.

Another Idol finalist, George Huff, followed Barrino.

Rev. Clyde Nash, a Hudson relative who offered a prayer, described the gathering as a celebration.

"Family members were crying and smiling," he said. "I saw smiles in spite of the tragedies."

Two hearses led the procession to Oak Woods Cemetery. Julian's small white coffin was carried in a horse-drawn carriage covered in red roses and a large teddy bear. The three victims were buried on a small knoll overlooking a pond.

After the service, Hudson's paternal half-brother, Samuel Simpson, thanked the community for its prayers the last 10 days.

"As a society we must stick together," Simpson said, adding the family remains optimistic that authorities will solve the case. "The police are going to do their job. We just have to keep the faith."

Julia Hudson -- "NOW I'M THE PRETTIEST ONE"
Posted Nov 7th 2008 1:00PM by TMZ Staff

Two weeks to the day after her mother, brother, and son were brutally murdered, it's hard not to point out what Jennifer Hudson's sister Julia is saying with words and pictures on her MySpace page.

Most bewildering is this: Under one picture Julia writes, "NOW THAT JASON'S GONE I'M THE PRETTIEST ONE," an apparent reference to brother Jason, whose body was found shot to death along with their mother's.

Other photos show her partying with friends.

Julia has taken down pictures of William Balfour, her estranged husband and still the only suspect in the case.

Hudson Murder Suspect Could Walk Monday
Posted Nov 7th 2008 2:35PM by TMZ Staff

Monday morning could be absolutely huge in the Hudson family murder case -- the cops' only suspect, William Balfour, could walk out of jail a free man.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ Balfour, who's only being held on a parole violation in a case unrelated to the murders, could "conceivably" skate if there's not enough evidence to prove he did violate his parole. He's scheduled to face the Illinois State Parole Review Board Monday at 9:00 AM.

The only way authorities could keep Balfour in custody is if they officially charge him for the Hudson killings between now and Monday, or if they find that he did violate his parole

Thus far, no other suspect has been named in the triple murder of Jennifer Hudson's mother, brother, and nephew.

she is cheap, and if you have read her myspace pages which are now private, she flaunted herself as being quite the catch...staying at the trump plaza during the funeral, has gone to her head......this is her new boo who was being flaunted to william on her myspace prior to all this tragedy...her son was brought up by her mother, neither she nor his biological father gave a hoot about julian according to neighbor reports.

Latest in Hudson case

Postby olympic » Mon Nov 10, 2008 2:36 am

A state investigator will present evidence to the board at the preliminary hearing, which Balfour will have a chance to rebut before a decision is made, said Kenneth Tupy, attorney for the review board. If the board finds probable cause to believe Balfour has committed a crime, or violated his parole in some other manner, he'll be held for further hearings.

If the board finds that Balfour has not violated his parole, he could be set free Monday.

Balfour acknowledged being at the Hudson's Englewood home on the morning that the actress' mother, Darnell Donerson, and her brother, Jason Hudson, were gunned down inside the house, law enforcement sources said. Julia Hudson's son, Julian, was abducted from the home and his body discovered three days later, shot twice in the head and slumped in the back of Jason Hudson's Chevy Suburban on a West Side street.

Balfour's current girlfriend also told police that he told her he had been involved in the killings of Donerson and Hudson, sources said.

Man in Hudson case to stay in prison

Postby olympic » Mon Nov 10, 2008 6:48 pm

CREST HILL, Ill.---- A parole review official refused to release Jennifer Hudson's estranged brother-in-law from prison Monday after a witness reported seeing the convicted felon with a gun like the one used in the slayings of the Oscar winner's mother, brother and nephew.

William Balfour hasn't been charged but has been questioned and called a ''person of interest'' in the killings. Balfour denied any involvement in a crime, including the allegation he had been seen with a gun, during a Monday hearing with a member of the Illinois Prisoner Review Board.

''He seemed to be disturbed. He contested those allegations'' about the gun, Board Chairman Jorge Montes said after the hearing. ''He was protesting the introduction of that evidence and he denied it.''

Balfour, 27, has been in custody for more than two weeks, since the day the bodies of Hudson's mother and brother were discovered inside the family's home. After 48 hours -- the longest Chicago police can hold a person without charges -- Balfour was taken by the Illinois Department of Corrections on a parole violation.

Balfour, the estranged husband of Jennifer Hudson's older sister, Julia Hudson, served seven years for a 1999 attempted murder and vehicular hijacking conviction.

Jeanetta Cardine, executive with the prisoner review board, decided during Monday's 35-minute hearing that there is probable cause to hold Balfour until a Dec. 3 hearing before a board panel.

Cardine was told during the hearing that a woman, described as Balfour's current or former girlfriend, has told investigators she saw Balfour with a gun matching the description of the .45 caliber weapon used to kill Hudson's family members.

''She described the gun as being silver, the same make I suppose as the gun recovered by the Chicago Police Department,'' said Montes, who added that information about the woman's statements came from the Cook County State's Attorney's office.

Both the state's attorney's office and police department declined to comment Monday.

Officers found the .45-caliber gun days after the killings in a vacant lot in the West Side neighborhood where Jennifer Hudson's 7-year-old nephew's body was found inside the SUV.

While Cardine found probable cause to believe Balfour violated other conditions of his parole, including failing to get anger management and substance abuse counseling, Montes said the gun allegation alone was enough to keep Balfour in custody.

''That's a very serious allegation,'' Montes said. ''If somebody's alleging they saw him with a gun that was used in the murder of three individuals, we would definitely hold'' him.

Balfour did not have an attorney present at Monday's hearing and the Cook County Public Defender's office said he has not been assigned one because he hasn't been charged with a crime.

The bodies of 57-year-old Darnell Donerson and 29-year-old Jason Hudson were discovered Oct. 24 at the family's home. Seven-year-old Julian King's body was found three days later in the sport utility vehicle on the city's West Side. All three had been shot.

Before being turned over to the Department of Corrections, Balfour had refused to take a lie-detector test and stopped cooperating with detectives in the case, said a police official, who was not authorized to discuss the case publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

His mother, Michelle Balfour, of Chicago, has denied that her son had anything to do with the deaths.

Trump: Hudson safe at my hotel

Postby olympic » Thu Nov 13, 2008 3:40 am

'SHE'S A GREAT GIRL' | Real estate mogul says he's protecing star and her relatives

When your family is enduring an unspeakable tragedy, it's good to have friends in high places.

People Magazine reported online Tuesday that Donald Trump has put up Jennifer Hudson and some of her relatives at Trump International Hotel & Tower -- for free.

She's a great girl," Trump told People. "And we're protecting them well. They are very safe."

Trump made the comments Monday at a benefit in New York honoring film director Baz Luhrmann.

It was unclear how long Hudson and her family would remain Trump's guests.

Hudson's mother, Darnell Donerson, 57, and her brother, Jason Hudson, 29, were found shot to death Oct. 24 in the Hudson family home in the 7000 block of South Yale. The body of Jennifer Hudson's 7-year-old nephew, Julian King, was found in an SUV three days later on the West Side. Convicted felon William Balfour has been identified as a suspect in the case, but he has not been charged.

Arrest made in Jennifer Hudson family murders

Mon Dec 1, 2008 6:20pm EST

By Andrew Stern

CHICAGO (Reuters) -
The estranged brother-in-law of Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson was arrested and will be charged with the October slayings of three of her relatives, police said on Monday.

"We have obtained an arrest warrant for William Balfour. He was released to Chicago detectives," Chicago Police Department spokeswoman Monique Bond said, adding that Balfour would be charged with three counts of murder.

Balfour, 27, who had been married to Hudson's sister Julia, was questioned after the slayings but not charged. He was imprisoned for violating his parole on a previous attempted murder conviction, and was scheduled to have a hearing on Wednesday.

Bond would not give details about what evidence led police to charge Balfour for the shooting deaths of Hudson's mother, Darnell Donerson, 57, brother, Jason Hudson, 29, and 7-year-old nephew, Julian King.

Donerson and Jason Hudson were found shot to death on October 24 in Donerson's South Side home. Four days later, King's body was found in a stolen sport utility vehicle parked on the city's West Side. A handgun used in the slayings was found nearby.

The Chicago Tribune reported investigators had evidence that Balfour had a gun matching the weapon.

After the slayings, Jennifer Hudson returned to Chicago and identified King's body at the morgue.

Hudson got her start in 2005 competing on the U.S. television show "American Idol" although she failed to reach the final.

She later won the role of Effie White in the 2006 film version of the stage musical "Dreamgirls" and earned a best supporting actress Oscar for her performance.

Hudson has since appeared in the movie version of "Sex and the City" and "The Secret Life of Bees."

Postby olympic » Mon Dec 01, 2008 9:40 pm

TOP row: Jason Hudson, Julian King, Darnell Donerson BOTTOM row: Julia Hudson, Jennifer Hudson, William Balfour

May 2008--William Balfour, the husband of Jennifer Hudson's sister Julia, moves out of Hudson family home in the 7900 block of South Yale Avenue.

June 2008----Balfour, on parole for a 1999 attempted murder conviction, is arrested on a charge of possession of cocaine. Balfour was stopped after he got out of a vehicle that had turned a corner at high speed in an area where police were investigating calls of shots fired. Police said they found drugs in the car Balfour was driving.

The Illinois Department of Corrections is contacted about the new drug charges because Balfour was on parole, but the agency decides not to return him to prison.

July 16--The drug case against Balfour is dropped after Cook County Circuit Judge David Skryd found police had no probable cause to arrest Balfour.

Undetermined date--Jason Hudson, Jennifer's brother, is shot in the leg in Gary, but refuses to seek medical attention, according to friends and family members. The wound limits his mobility and forces him to use a cane to walk.

Friday Oct 24

7 a.m.--Balfour drives his teal Chrysler to the Hudsons' block, arriving about 7 a.m., according to witnesses

9 a.mmNeighbors hear gunshots, but do not notify police.

Undetermined time--An early report said there were no signs of forced entry to the home, but law enforcement sources later said the shootings began with the gunman firing through a door and striking Hudson's brother, Jason, 29. The shooter then entered the house and continued to fire, hitting Hudson's mother when she entered the room.

12:30 p.m.--The teal Chrysler is parked near Robeson High School, about a mile from the Hudson home. Security video from the school showed someone parking the Chrysler, but investigators have not been able to determine the person's identity, sources said. A time stamp on the video showed the car was left there at 12:30 p.m., but it was unclear whether the stamp was accurate.

Cell phone records placed Balfour on the West Side at that hour, sources said. If the time stamp at the school is accurate, it would suggest another person may have driven the Chrysler from the Hudson home to Robeson. In any event, Balfour did not use his own car to travel from the Hudson's Englewood house to his girlfriend's home near 19th Street and Spaulding Avenue on the West Side, police said.

Unknown time--Balfour misses a meeting with his parole officer, the Associated Press reported.

3 p.m.--A relative finds the body of Jennifer Hudson's mother, Darnell Donerson, 57, shot to death in her living room. The relative notifies authorities, who then find the body of Jennifer's brother, Jason Hudson, 29, shot to death in a bedroom. There is no sign of Julian King, the 7-year-old son of Jennifer's sister, Julia.

Unknown time--Reached by phone by his parole agent, Balfour says he is "baby-sitting on the West Side." The agent thinks he hears a child in the background, the Associated Press reported.

About 6 p.m.Authorities issue an Amber Alert for both Julian and Balfour, his stepfather.

About 6 p.m.--Police arrest Balfour at his pregnant girlfriend's West Side apartment, but the boy is not with him.

Later--Balfour's girlfriend tells police that he was at her West Side home not long after the slayings.

Evening--Officers question Balfour, but he stops talking when police suggest he take a polygraph, law-enforcement sources said. Balfour's girlfriend contradicts his alibi and tells police he was involved in the killings of the two adults, but not that of the boy, law-enforcement sources said.

SATURDAY, Oct. 25

1:30 a.m.--Jennifer Hudson identifies the bodies of her brother and mother at the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Morning--The FBI is called in to help.

Police say the teal vehicle has been located but continue to search for the white Suburban.

Afternoon--Police searched the house again Saturday afternoon in case Julian is hiding inside. Shell casings are recovered from the scene.

5 p.m.Relatives of the missing boy make a public plea for his return.

SUNDAY, Oct. 26

Officials transfer Balfour to Stateville Correctional Center.

MONDAY, Oct. 27

Julian's body is discovered in the back of Jason Hudson's Chevrolet Suburban, parked in the 1300 block of South Kolin Avenue on the West Side. A tiny Chihuahua named Li'l Man had howled and barked at the unfamiliar white SUV parked there. The dog's reaction drew the attention of its owner, John Louden, who realized it matched the SUV police had been looking for since Friday. It remains unclear if police had canvassed the block, but some neighbors say they had seen the SUV since Friday. No one called police before Monday.

Julian's body was slumped over in the back seat of the Suburban. He had been shot in the head. A bullet found lodged in the vehicle, along with other evidence, led detectives to believe he had been shot in the vehicle. Police don't know precisely when he was killed.

TUESDAY, Oct. 28

As detectives continued searching for answers, the Cook County medical examiner's office releases autopsy results showing Julian King died of multiple gunshot wounds.

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 29

Police find a handgun matching the caliber of weapon used in the slayings, providing a potential break in the case. The type and make of ammunition also matched shell casings recovered at the scene.

The gun was found in an alley just a block from the spot in North Lawndale where Julian's body had been found. A few other "small bits of evidence," are also recovered next to the gun, which was nestled in thick shrubs in a vacant lot in the 1400 block of South Kolin Avenue.

FRIDAY, Oct. 31
Forensic testing shows that the chrome-and-black .45-caliber Sig Sauer semiautomatic pistol recovered by Chicago police was the weapon used to kill all three victims.

Police are investigating whether the weapon had once belonged to Hudson's slain brother, Jason. He once owned an identical gun that he thought had been stolen from the family's Englewood home a few months earlier, according to law-enforcement sources and several neighbors.

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives had traced the recovered gun to its original owner in Michigan, who had reported it stolen, sources said.

While police have investigated the slayings as possible domestic violence, they have not ruled out other motives. Neither Balfour nor anyone else has been charged, but Balfour remains in custody

Monday, Nov. 10

The Illinois Prisoner Review Board rules that there is reason to believe that Balfour, 27, violated his parole in another matter for several reasons, including being in places where drugs were sold. In addition, the board cited a statement from his girlfriend that she saw him with a gun that matched the murder weapon.

Police confident Hudson family murders solved

Postby olympic » Wed Dec 03, 2008 12:29 am

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Police charged the estranged brother-in-law of Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson with the murders of her mother, brother and nephew, expressing confidence on Tuesday the evidence was sufficient to convict.

"You can never always know how a jury will decide a case but I'm confident the evidence is there and I'm confident we'll be successful," Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis said.

Police said they had the murder weapon and physical evidence as well as testimony that would convict William Balfour, 27, the estranged husband of Jennifer Hudson's elder sister, Julia.

The motive for the October 24 murders involved a dispute between the two, police said.

Found dead from gunshots were Hudson's mother Darnell Donerson, 57, and brother, Jason Hudson, 29, in the family's South Side home. The body of Julian King, Julia's son, was found four days later, with the gun used in the slayings found nearby.

In addition to the slayings Balfour was charged with home invasion.

Balfour's mother Michele Balfour protested her son's innocence to reporters, saying police relied on the word of one of his girlfriends who was facing a drug charge.

"They got a botched-up investigation," she said, adding Balfour loved Hudson's mother, Donerson, more than he loved her. "But I'm still his mother."

Weis said no deals were made in exchange for witness statements implicating Balfour, who has been held on a parole violation since the slayings.

"We had citizens standing up and doing the right thing," he said.
