Divers Search NH Pond for Sign of Missing Girl, 11

Updated: 4:05 PM Jul 31, 2011

Jane Young of the state attorney general's office said divers were sent to Back Pond on Sunday morning. The small pond is less than a mile from Celina Cass' home in Stewartstown, where she lives with her mother and stepfather.

Young says authorities aren't leaving "any stone unturned" in the search for the fifth-grader.

The FBI, state police and other agencies are looking for Celina in New Hampshire and nearby Vermont and Canada.

The FBI is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the girl's whereabouts. A community member has added an additional $5,000.

Celina was last seen Monday night at her home computer.

Divers scoured a Northern New Hampshire pond in the hunt for 11-year-old Celina Cass, who has been missing for six days.

Senior Assistant Attorney General Jane Young said authorities searched Back Pond on Sunday for any sign of the fifth-grader.

The small pond is less than a mile away from the girl's home in Stewartstown, a small community of 800 residents.

Ms Young said Vermont and New Hampshire state police, the FBI and other agencies also were continuing an intense ground search in those states and in Canada.

She said: 'We're searching for Celina Cass as a missing person. We have no evidence to categorize this any other way.'

Celina, who lives with her mother and stepfather, was last seen on Monday night playing on her computer. The next morning, she was gone.

Residents described Celina as a sweet, friendly child. One of Celina's best friends, 11-year-old Makayla Riendeau, said Celina loves her mother and likes her stepfather and wouldn't run away.

She said Celina is very athletic, is a stickler about getting her school work done on time and loves having friends over to her house.

Makayla said: 'She's a very good friend, and she never lets anybody down.'

Investigators have knocked on hundreds of doors, and hundreds of fliers with her photo have been put up throughout Stewartstown and nearby communities.

Law enforcement agencies have set up a command post at the local school.

The FBI announced Saturday that it was offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the whereabouts of Celina Cass, who's been missing for five days.

The reward would also cover information leading to the arrest and prosecution of anyone responsible for the disappearance of the fifth grader, who was last seen Monday night.

Supervisory Special Agent Kieran Ramsey said: 'This reward should not be read into that we are transitioning in any way in this investigation.'

Ramsey added that recent, successful cases of recovered missing children have resulted in vigilance from the public.

'We are still aggressively -aggressively -searching and hoping to bring Celina Cass home,' he said.

In addition, a member of the community who wished to remain anonymous put up a separate $5,000 reward for any information.
Meanwhile, police are turning their attention to the missing girl's computer as it has been revealed her stepfather has a troubled past filled with allegations of criminal behaviour and mental illness.

Police are desperately searching for her and plan to question everyone in the small town of Stewartstown, New Hampshire, which is just a mile away from the Canadian border.

On Friday night, the stepfather of the shy fifth-grader, Wendell Noyes, said family members were 'grieving' -as a friend issued a statement on their behalf with a direct plea to Celina, saying 'we will not stop searching for you until you are back in our arms'.

It has emerged that Noyes, 47, was involuntarily committed in 2003 after being diagnosed with schizophrenia and arrested for threatening an ex-girlfriend.

According to court records obtained by ABC, the woman said Noyes broke into her home while she and her two children slept, picked up her mattress and slammed it down.

She also told authorities that he threatened to throw her down the stairs.

At the time, Judge Richard Hampe ruled Noyes was incompetent to stand trial, writing that the man's mental illness created 'a potentially serious likelihood of danger to himself and others'.

A forensic examiner said Noyes was a paranoid schizophrenic, who most likely developed the condition while he was in the Air Force.

Celina's family have said that she would never run away from home or leave with a stranger.

Speaking yesterday from a motel in Canaan, Vermont, where he and Celina's mother are staying, Noyes told the Boston Herald: 'Right now, we’re in the process of grieving.'

At a press conference last night, a friend broke down as she read out a statement on behalf of Celina's family.

She said: 'Our beautiful Celina is a happy child who brings much love and joy into the lives of those who know her. Her safe and speedy return is our sole priority and focus.

'We remain hopeful and vigilant and trust in the investigative abilities of the authorities involved. We pray that our little girl is returned home soon.

'We plead for answers and ask if you saw or know anything at all, however insignificant you may think your information is, that you come forward now without hesitation and share it with our investigators.

'And Celina, if you can hear this now, please know how much we love and we miss you. You are in our thoughts and in our prayers. We will not stop searching for you until you are back in our arms.'

Her disappearance has shaken the small town, with some fearing that she may have been taken out of the country.

State police from New Hampshire and Vermont, along with FBI child abduction specialists and U.S. border patrol, scoured the area Thursday, even sending agents as far as New York and Virginia.

Investigators say they have little to go on, with no signs of an abduction or a struggle but no sign she ran away either.

Jane Young, New Hampshire's assistant attorney general, said they were going to talk to every person in town.

'Every house, every individual in the neighbourhood is being spoken to,' she said.

She added: 'We just continue to look for her with all available assets.

We don’t have any evidence at this juncture to indicate that this is a criminal investigation.”

Investigators are painstakingly going through 225 tips, some of which have come from as far away as North Carolina and Illinois.

More than 100 searchers are now involved in the manhunt for the 11-year-old girl, including the FBI and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

The town of just 800 people is only a mile from Canada.

So far, this extraordinary effort has turned up nothing.

Kiernan Ramsey of the FBI's New Hampshire office told ABC: 'We're using advanced techniques from aviation to canines and the like.

We are hopeful some positive outcome could result.'

He added: 'Some have made a lot of debate as to whether this is a missing persons case or an abduction.

I will tell you, from the FBI's perspective, labelling of this case does not matter, when it comes to the resources that we are bringing to bear.'

The front lawn of the home where Celina lives with her mother, stepfather and 13-year-old sister has been turned into a shrine, with candles, stuffed animals and notes to the missing fifth grader.

Community members outside the home are flagging down cars and handing out flyers with Celina's image.

'It's a big world and she's a small girl and she's only 11. She doesn't know how to handle herself,' said Stewartstown resident Shahannah Fuller.

Celina's mother and stepfather have not spoken to the television media, and have requested 'absolute privacy'.

On Wednesday an extensive land search was scaled back, and police trawled the Connecticut River using two boats.

They lowered the waterway so helicopters could scour it from the air, while officers desperately searching an area within a half-mile radius of her home.

Friends and neighbours have been holding candlelit vigils for Celina every night since she disappeared, as they desperately pray for her safe return.

They gather around a framed photograph of the schoolgirl on a picnic table, surrounded by candles.

Friends say Celina was the last person they'd expect to run away.

Fighting back tears and holding a lit candle at the gathering, family friend Rebecca Goodrum said: 'She never went anywhere without her mom or sister.'

She said: 'She was beautiful. She was the light of everything.' Another, Kayla Baglio, said: 'She is very shy. If she doesn't know you, she'd look at her sister to see if it was OK to talk to you.

One of Celina's schoolfriends, 11-year-old Makayla Riendeau, said she was very athletic and a stickler about getting her school work done on time.

She said: 'She's a very good friend, and she never lets anybody down.

Shannon Towles, who owns a mini-mart on Route 3, said her disappearance had shaken the town, which has just 800 residents.

She said: 'It's creepy. Things like this don't happen here. I know that's kind of a tired phrase. I'm an overprotective mom as it is. Now it's going to be way worse.'

Mrs Towles said Celina wasn't the type of girl to hitchhike or run away.

She said: 'She's just a little girl and she's a nice little girl.' Celina attends Stewartstown Community School, where she is one of just 85 pupils.

The district superintendent described her as popular and well-liked, and said six counsellors were on hand to help students cope with her disappearance.

Mrs Towles said her daughter, Echo, had asked her whether she thought Celina was still alive.

She said: 'How do I answer that question? And do I want to? I don't want to think about it, but I pray every second that she is.'

Friends and neighbours have spent the last four days posting flyers showing her smiling face on every available lamppost and tree trunk.

On Thursday police searched the woods behind an apartment building about a mile north of the town. They carried bags and boxes, but it was unclear if they collected anything.

Later officers went into Celina's home, then stretched yellow crime scene tape around it before posting a uniformed officer outside.

Then plain clothes police officers wearing purple rubber gloves surrounded a red pick-up truck parked across the street from the house, taking photographs and looking inside.

Lieutenant Douglas Gralenski, a state Fish and Game Department official helping to search the river, said: 'Honestly, we don't know where else we can look. There's so much that's unknown.'

He said: 'It's not a deep river. You'd be hard-pressed to find six to eight feet in most of it in that area. When we had it drawn down, it was exceptionally low.'

The investigation has now been passed on to the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office.

Dad: I’m here waiting for Celina’s return

Monday, August 1, 2011

The father of Celina Cass pleaded for his little girl’s safe return yesterday as investigators searched by air, land and water for the 11-year-old missing for one week.

“We are all wondering where my daughter is and hoping the best for her safety,” Adam Laro told reporters yesterday. “I’d appreciate it if we get her back very soon.”

Laro said he had recently been hospitalized but did not say why.

“If she hears me now, tell her Daddy’s OK now,” said Laro. “I’m doing much better, and whenever you’re ready to come home, Celina, daddy will be here waiting for you.

” Authorities have investigated more than 400 leads, but the grim possibility has begun to sink in that Cass may not be found alive.

“Ain’t nobody hopeful,” said Robbie Kimball, the owner of Wayne’s Lanes and Jo’s Grill.

“The only hope we have is that she’s going somewhere and maybe will get in touch with us.”

Divers scoured Back Pond in tiny Stewartstown, N.H. —population 800 —for any sign of the missing fifth-grader, said Senior Assistant Attorney General Jane Young.

“We’re searching for Celina Cass as a missing person,” she said.

“We have no evidence to categorize this any other way.”

The small pond is less than a mile from Cass’ home. She was last seen playing on her computer last Monday night and had vanished by the next morning.

“She’s a very good friend, and she never lets anybody down,” said 11-year-old Makayla Riendeau, one of Cass’ best friends, who said she wouldn’t run away.

The FBI is offering a $25,000 reward for information in the case, and a community member has added $5,000.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Anyone else find this an odd thing for the stepfather to say? Or am I just taking his statement wrong? Grieving the fact that she is missing?? or grieving that she is dead? Guess is could be meant both ways...just seems like an odd choice of words to me.

Feelings of grief can be the result of any life changing event, eg. a partner that is still alive and kicking walking out on you etc..

Female body found at dam near missing girl's home

August 1, 2011

STEWARTSTOWN, N.H.—Investigators searching for an 11-year-old New Hampshire girl missing for almost a week found a female's body, but authorities didn't immediately identify it, a Vermont prosecutor said Monday.

The body was found near a hydroelectric dam that spans the Connecticut River between Stewartstown and Canaan, Vt., Essex County state attorney Vincent Illuzzi said.

Celina Cass was last seen in her Stewartstown, N.H., home on July 25. A dive team searched the river Monday.

They surfaced, and investigators blocked off the area and asked reporters to leave.

Cass, who lived with her older sister, mother and stepfather a mile from the Canadian border, was last seen at a computer around 9 p.m. and was gone the next morning, authorities said. Police said there was no sign of a struggle, and there was no indication she ran away or that someone took her.

No one was more baffled than friends and family, who described Cass as studious and reliable, shy and timid, not the type to run away from home.

State police and FBI agents from as far away as New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia turned the local school into a bustling command post. Because of its remote location, law enforcement officers went so far as to have a cellphone tower erected to assist in communications.

At the peak, more than 100 federal, state and local law enforcement officers descended upon the town of 800 residents, searching a mile-wide area around her home, including woods and ponds. The FBI brought in a special team specializing in child abductions.

No, I don't find it strange. Her mother and stepfather must fear for the worst. She is missing a week, she is only 11 years old and a very shy girl who would not just run away.

Prosecutor: Body Found By Crews Searching For Girl
Remains Not Identified As Search For Celina Cass Continues

POSTED: 1:31 pm EDT August 1, 2011
UPDATED: 1:44 pm EDT August 1, 2011

CANAAN, Vt. -- A body has been found by a dam on the Connecticut River by teams searching for a missing 11-year-old girl.

Crews searched an area near the Canaan Hydro-Dam as investigators continued to look for clues in the disappearance of 11-year-old Celina Cass, who was last seen in her West Stewartstown, N.H., home on July 25.

Essex County state attorney Vincent Illuzzi said a female body was found near the dam, but no identification had been made.

At about 10:45 a.m. Monday, a dive team came up from the water, and shortly after, other investigators and Assistant Attorney General Jane Young went to the scene. The media were asked to leave the area.

Roads on the Canaan side of the river were closed off, blocking the view of the river.

Monday afternoon, several of Celina's relatives had gathered at her home and could be seen crying.

The FBI has offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to the location of Celina and the arrest and prosecution of a suspect.

A separate $5,000 reward from an anonymous citizen was announced for anyone who can provide information leading to her whereabouts.

Celina's family said they last saw her at her computer shortly before she went to bed the night of July 25. The next morning when they went to wake her up, she was gone.

Her disappearance led to a massive law enforcement effort involving more than 50 FBI agents and an equal number of officials from state and local police, search crews and dive teams. Investigators have said that they had received hundreds of tips but few solid leads.

Over the weekend, Celina's father, Adam Laro, pleaded for her safe return. Monday morning, her stepfather, Wendell Noyes, was taken by ambulance to Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital.

Female body found at dam near missing New Hampshire girl's home

Investigators searching for an 11-year-old New Hampshire girl missing for almost a week have found a female’s body, but authorities didn’t immediately identify it, a Vermont prosecutor said Monday.

The body was found in the 9 a.m. hour today in New Hampshire near a hydroelectric dam that spans the Connecticut River between Stewartstown and Canaan, Vt., Essex County state attorney Vincent Illuzzi said. The New Hampshire medical examiner is on the scene and will make official identification, Illuzzi said.

“The cause of death needs to be determined. It is premature to say it is a homicide,” Illuzzi told the Burlington Free Press.

Part of the investigation will be to determine how the body got there, Illluzzi said. He said it was too early for investigators to be able to say if the death happened at that site or whether the body was left there by someone, he said.

Celina Cass was last seen in her Stewartstown, N.H., home on July 25.

A dive team searched the river Monday. They surfaced, and investigators blocked off the area and asked reporters to leave.

I do have to wonder why they never issued an amber alert.

And now we have the stepfather hospitalized after a body was found near Celina's home.

Bbeba, I'm still torn between the two possibilities: homicide (the stepfather is involved) or suicide (looking at the facebook, she seemed to have a crash on someone and felt possibly rejected).

It's very sad that Celina died so very young. The only positive thing is that her body has been found after only one week and I hope LE can find out cause of death and if someone was responsible for her death, to prosecute that person.

The Amber Alert is only for missing children that there is a viable report to be alerted to about. Such as a person last seen with or/and a vehicle. Something to be on the look out for, in this case there was nothing known to be looking for.

Why would you think that? She just disappeared in the night to off herself? Just doesn't seem likely, she apparently was well loved among her sport and school mates. I can't imagine that a failed love would cause her to commit suicide at 11 yrs old. Though anything is possible.

The Amber Alert is only for missing children that there is a viable report to be alerted to about. Such as a person last seen with or/and a vehicle. Something to be on the look out for, in this case there was nothing known to be looking for.

I thought since she's still a manner an amber alert would have been issued.

Thank you Isanah.

Why would you think that? She just disappeared in the night to off herself? Just doesn't seem likely, she apparently was well loved among her sport and school mates. I can't imagine that a failed love would cause her to commit suicide at 11 yrs old. Though anything is possible.

I was reading her Facebook site and looking at her pictures. There is a beautiful picture of her where she is wearing a hat. One comment was "You look hot". There there is a picture where she is smiling and the comment was: "WOW!". Her response: "What?"

There are also some comments which seemed to me, she had a crash on someone. I have no doubt that she was well loved among her sport and school mates. However, "being in love" is different. IMO, she discovered "the other gender" and was getting more aware about her looks.

I don't know if she talked to her friends about it or if there are any other indications, if her cell phone would show anything. It's so far just my gut feeling.

There was also just recently a case where a young girl committed suicide by drowning herself in a pond. A suicide note was found.

And a statistic about suicide of young people:

Is suicide common among children and young people?

In 2007, suicide was the third leading cause of death for young people ages 15 to 24.1 Of every 100,000 young people in each age group, the following number died by suicide:1

Children ages 10 to 14 — 0.9 per 100,000
Adolescents ages 15 to 19 — 6.9 per 100,000
Young adults ages 20 to 24 — 12.7 per 100,000

On the other hand:

The location where her body was discovered is only 1/4 mile (2 football fields) from her home. Walking distance. If something upset her very much, she could have easily walked to the river/dam and jumped in. As it's so close to her home, she was probably familiar with the area.

IF her stepfather had anything to do with it, would he actually dispose her body so close to her home? :?

I hope LE will be able to solve this case.

Ck it never crossed my mind Celina might have committed suicide i did look at her facebook wall when you posted the link, and Celina did have those love applications, but some of those applications get on your profile just by clicking on the program.

Without your knowledge its kind of like spam.

I did think it was someone close to Celina perhaps someone within the family, but in some cases you could never really tell.

I agree with you that its a good thing this body was found if indeed its Celina, and it was found in a short, hopefully their will be evidence to show what happened if this is Celina...

Bbeba, Celina did not meet the criteria for an Amber alert as there were no signs she was abducted and no information about a captor's vehicle:

Law enforcement must confirm that an abduction has taken place.

The child must be at risk of serious injury or death.

There must be sufficient descriptive information of child, captor, or captor's vehicle to issue an alert.

The child must be 17 years old or younger.

According to statistics, every 4th child is sexually molested by a family member or someone close to the family.

IMO, most of those sexual molestations get never reported and most of the children survive.

If a child gets abducted by a stranger and is sexually molested, many of those children are then murdered.

I don't know what happened in Celina's case. Her stepfather has a shady past and his relatives are sex offenders. But I still don't rule out suicide. Celina had an older sister. If the stepfather did something to Celina, he might have tried to so something to her older sister as well. JMO.
